President Colin Maddocks chaired a lively debate on the one formal Motion, “That U3A Sunshine Coast appoint a paid part time administrator”. The proposer of the motion and a former President, Jim Hales, reminded the members that the proposed paid part time administrator’s work would be to support the broader organisation, not run the office, nor replace the day leaders and office volunteers.

President’s Report

Dear Members,

This past couple of weeks we have experienced a couple of safety incidents. It is a reminder to us all to be safety conscious for ourselves and our friends. In all classes, and especially those involving a higher level of physical activity, we should take the necessary precautions to minimise an incident and injury to ourselves or others. We should check our surrounds and make sure the equipment we are using is fit for purpose. We should not proceed if it is unsafe to do so. If something requires maintenance or repair then please report it to your tutor. Should an incident occur please report that to your tutor and we ask tutors to submit an incident report form so we can follow up and remedy any unsafe condition or correct any unsafe procedure. Let’s look out for one another.

As mentioned in an email sent to all members last week we are seeking a Secretary for our Management Committee. Support and training will be provided for the successful candidate to transition successfully into the position. If you, or a U3A member you know, are willing to fill this position please contact me as soon as possible. Please also contact me if you have any questions about the position. M: 0419-810894. E: [email protected]

Wishing you happy and joyful learning……

Warm regards,

Colin

Captain Needed For

Caloundra Lecture Group

An interesting and important volunteer position...

Mary Ann and Ron Wright have been captaining the Caloundra group for five years, but for personal reasons will retire at the end of 2018. This is an interesting position co-ordinating our Caloundra lectures.

The position involves telephoning the lecturers/speakers in the week prior to

a session to ascertain any specific audio-visual requirements, and to answer questions about the group such as projected attendance.

It also involves arranging for setting up and taking down of chairs, screen, computer, etc., and transporting and storing a laptop computer, small projector and cabling for the equipment. The group has a volunteer to help with setting up the audio-visuals in 2019.

Maintaining attendance sheets for each meeting is also required. These are forwarded to U3A at the end of each term.

The person will either thank the presenter personally or provide a “thank you” speaker for each session. And work with the Lecture Co-ordinator on any problems with venue, speaker, audience.

Lyn Lovell 0421 853 007 or [email protected] is happy to answer any queries.

The Philosophers Circle – A Discussion Group

Are you interested in Philosophy and would like to find a group of like-minded people with which to discuss and explore ideas? One of our members has been in contact to start such a group. She envisages a group that could meet on a regular basis that would decide on a philosophical topic or philosopher for the next meeting. Everyone would then be able to undertake some research so as to share and explore ideas with each other, at the subsequent class. If such a group appeals, please contact Wayne Curran ( Tutor and Course Coordinator) [email protected] to express your interest and he will arrange to put you in contact with each other.

Anti-Discrimination Workshop

Executive members of U3A Sunshine Coast were delighted to welcome guests from U3A Noosa to a most interesting workshop on Queensland State’s comprehensive laws against Discrimination. Amy Webster from the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Commission led the workshop held at the U3A’s SCU Lecture room on Friday, October 5th. Those present were able to ask, and receive informative answers to a number of questions related to potential Age discrimination issues.

The U3A Noosa members appreciated the opportunity to share the speaker, and plan to

invite any interested U3A Sunshine Coast members for a return visit to their friendly and welcoming U3A Noosa headquarters at Michell House in Poinciana Avenue, Tewantin.

U3A Sunshine Coast and U3A Noosa are grateful for the sponsorship provided by the U3A Network Queensland Inc.

Copies of Amy Webster’s PowerPoint handout along with cited case studies are available from U3A Sunshine Coast’s office. VP Glyni Cumming

Get Up and Go! The September U3a break gave the Travel Chat members the opportunity to catch up over lunch instead of photos, but adventures & trips both in Australia & overseas were still top of the chatter. We average 34 members each week at our Travel Chat meetings held in the Caloundra Library every Tuesday afternoon @ 1.30pm. The other 40% are away on holidays gathering stories to return with. This year we have covered the world from the Arctic to the Antartica & circled the globe, in fact presentations from all 7 continents.

We never tire of stories & photos as everyone has different photos, different stories & different perspective of their destinations. Our Tips & Information segment always brings out new knowledge for members to share with each other. We have a chart of ‘Countries & unique places visited by our members’ which gives everyone the opportunity to seek out another member who has been to a particular destination.

I Spy... U3a’s Monday bird-watching group, led by John Carlisle, headed off to Ballina and environs for its Spring bird-watching outing. In pretty atrocious conditions on Monday and Tuesday the intrepid group of about 20 birders donned wet weather gear and headed to beach and bush and were rewarded with a spectacular bird count....when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Birds and birders both. We were joined by more members mid-week and with improved weather, and exceptionally well planned outings by John and wife, Brenda, within Ballina and nearby areas, our bird count lifted to record 128 species for the visit. Good birding, great fellowship and an awful lot of fun.

No

Magpies!

No Wind!

Cycling 2 enjoyed a cycle around the Redcliffe Peninsula on 3 October, led by Tony N. Beautiful weather, great company and only one grumpy pedestrian on the cycle/pedestrian paths.

And neither wind nor attacking magpies; what more can social cyclists ask for?

Leaving from Petrie the route followed the railway to Kippa Ring station then on to Scarborough for breakfast on the front, to Redcliffe for a bit of karaoke in the Bee Gees memorial alley, on to Woody Point then cross country back to Kippa Ring where some caught a train back to Petrie. The more energetic cycled back to Petrie for a total ride of 50km.

Presenting at Caloundra on 21 November...

The Origins of National Tombs Dedicated to their Unknown Warrior

This presentation, in the year which marks the centenary of the end of WW1, will reveal the origin and

development of the idea of a tomb to an unknown warrior. It was initiated in England, by a young

front-line padre and then introduced into the social fabric of many countries throughout the world. It is

remarkable in hindsight that it took so long for a person to propose such a memorial. Perhaps though,

it is not so remarkable when considered within a culture where traditionally, families were resigned to

the fact that they would never have a place to mourn their loved ones who had been killed on ancient

and foreign battlefields throughout the centuries. The catalyst was the magnitude of losses and

anonymity of fallen warriors; losses which had never before been experienced by any of the

combatant countries. To book call Lyn 0421 853 007
