Eiland Center Library News for November

The Dutch House by Ann Patchett is a tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. It’s a moving story that explores the indelible bond between two siblings, their childhood home, and a past that will not let them go. Filled with questions of inheritance, love and forgiveness, how we want to see ourselves and who we really are.

The Guardians by John Grisham is a classic legal thriller–-with a twist. It is the story of the Guardian Ministries and its founder, Cullen Post who travels the country fighting wrongful convictions and taking on clients forgotten by the system. His organization accepts only a few “innocence” cases each year and has chosen the case of a man incarcerated for twenty-two years, still maintaining his innocence. This case presents an added problem -- powerful, ruthless people are behind the murder, and they do not want his new client exonerated.

A Single Thread by Tracy Chevalier tells the story of a “surplus” woman and does a masterful job of depicting the circumstances of a generation of women: the mothers, sisters, wives and fiancés of men lost in World War I. It is the moving story of a woman coming into her own at the dawn of the Second World War.

The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott combines a legendary literary love story with a narrative about two women empowered to lead lives of extraordinary intrigue and risk. At the height of the Cold War, two secretaries are pulled out of the typing pool at the CIA and given the assignment of a lifetime. Their mission: to smuggle Doctor Zhivago out of the USSR, where no one dare publish it.

The Darwin Affair by Tim Mason is an edge-of-your-seat Victorian-era thriller, where the controversial publication On the Origin of Species sets off a string of unspeakable crimes. It has an intelligent plot featuring prominent figures of the time and tosses you into the middle of an assassination attempt of the Royals--Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. This is a breath-taking historical mystery.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Pat Harkins

Our thanks to all of you who attended our Open House on October 9. Your positive remarks have been

encouraging as we continue to work on ways to make your library more efficient and welcoming.

Would you like to become a Highlands Library Book Reviewer? We have over 1600 volumes in our collection and some of these gems get overlooked everyday. Perhaps it is not a well-known author; perhaps the words on the spine don’t “jump out”; perhaps it is on the bottom shelf! For whatever reason, some very good, interesting books are not getting read. We are developing a cadre of individuals who are willing to read a book that is selected by our library staff, write a paragraph review of its content, and give an opinion of whether or not it is a “good read”. This will help us to know if it should remain in the library for our patrons.

In November, there will be books on the book table and on the top shelves that you may choose to read and comment on. Inside each book, there will be a paper for you to complete when you finish the book. There will also be sign-up sheets so we can know that you want to be part of our group of book reviewers. I hope you will consider this opportunity to expand your knowledge and help your library!

Magazines: As you have noticed, we have limited space for our magazines. Some of you are interested in donating magazines. Just so you know, we only keep the last 2 issues of any magazine. So if you want to donate a magazine it must be recent (not prior to September).

Also, there seems to be some confusion about circulation of the magazines. There is not a sign-out process, but you may take the magazines for 2-4 days and then return them so others can enjoy them. Or you may just want to relax in one of our blue wing-back chairs, put your feet on the ottoman, and enjoy the sunlight beaming through the window as you read your favorite magazine. If you live in the Highlands, you may enjoy a good read around 2 a.m.!

What’s coming up? The formation of book clubs; guest speakers; and informational sessions for Tiny Cat (the on-line card catalog). You won’t want to miss these new library offerings. So keep reading the “Musings from the Highlands Library” each month as these new things become available to you!
