THE EXHIBITFeatured Ar st–Michael WardThe Exhibit is located on the second floor of the Senior Center. Please visit the art display next me you are at the center for an enjoyable experience.

When Michael Ward was a teenager, his father gave him a 35mm camera, and he began taking photos of items he found interes ng. Eventually his professional photographer friends thought his images had ar s c merit, which encouraged him to further his art. In the early 1980s, he tried making pain ngs of the photos. He chose gouache and illustra on board, because he had access to those, unaware of the difficul es of the gouache medium. Those early works, while successful, were put on hold while other life events intervened. In the mid-1990s Michael began pain ng again, this me in acrylic on canvas. His impetus was to recreate the early pain ngs that he had sold, and always regre ed doing so. He has been pain ng steadily ever since. Michael’s subject ma er is derived (with a few excep ons) from photographs he has taken over the past 40 years. Places include Southern California, where he has lived since the age of 12, and places he visited such as Montana, Mexico, and Europe. Michael describes his pain ngs as documents looked at but not seen things, that are in our everyday life that we seldom examine closely. He believes through close observa on you are able to uncover the grace that is hidden in the things around us. “The pain ngs are my way of bearing witness, and of making people stop what they’re doing and pay a en on, to something they may have never seen before, but that makes them feel “I know this. A young woman saw my work on display remarked, “You make ordinary things look beau ful.” Yes, that is what I am a er, the beauty in ordinary things that reveals itself if we only see.”
