INFORMATION & RESOURCES

The area known as Parksville Qualicum Beach is proud to be called a retirement community, with the average age of residents hovering around 60 (the oldest in Canada). It’s only natural that the communities have tailored much of their services and organizations around assisting seniors with everyday needs.

Private care facilities, local businesses and volun-teer-based organizations — from social advocacy to music and theatre groups — provide many services to help se-niors live a healthy, active and engaged life in their com-munity. Within this guide are a multitude of activities, re-sources and supports for seniors, and information to easily access those services.

As Canada’s population continues to age, more and more government and public resources are being made available to seniors, their families and to local communi-ty organizations that work with elderly people. Our aging population is a significant issue in District 69 as well. Orga-nizations like the Qualicum Beach and Parksville Seniors Resource and Activity Centres, and the Society of Orga-nized Services (SOS) in Parksville, offer information and direction and help older people access the resources they need, and the activities they enjoy.

SOS seniors coordinator Dawn Barry says SOS provides assistance and information about services for seniors in the region, as well as help to access those services. In fact, the SOS has become one of the largest local single stops for seniors if they want information on local programs, and Barry says they work hard to help people get the help they need.

“We do our best to find out seniors’ needs,” she explains. “For example, the Seniors Are Talking group, is about ed-ucation and socialization. We have about 115 members and they meet weekly to discuss any topic of their choice — health, finances, exercise and more. We also enjoy occa-sional field trips to areas and events of interest to seniors.”

Yet, for the SOS that’s only the beginning. The Seniors’ Connection program offers one-on-one needs assess-ments to determine appropriate services and supports for older individuals. The new Oceanside Better at Home program offers help with everyday, non-medical tasks, of-fered by volunteers for no charge, or by contractors for a fee, based on a sliding scale. You’ll read more about this in the other sections of this directory. To reach the SOS, call 250-248-2093 or drop in at 245 West Hirst Avenue in Parksville.

Many of the area’s seniors find camaraderie at the Parksville Legion which is a gathering place for veterans year round.

SENIORS HOUSING & ASSISTED LIVING

They are picturesque seaside communities so it is no surprise Parksville and Qualicum Beach have long been favourite retirement destinations.

The beautiful scenery, good weather and active lifestyle have been attracting people to the region for generations and our laid back and casual atmosphere makes this the premier place in Canada to retire to.

Though vacancy rates are historically low, the region of-fers a variety of housing options for the area’s large senior population ranging from single family developments to all levels of assisted living.

The area boasts a healthy development industry build-ing condos and single family homes that may be just a little more physically accessible than in other regions, up to var-ious forms of adult only facilities, senior specific housing and assisted living options.

The region also has an increasing number of assisted living options for those who need different levels of long-term care but are generally able to get around.

Options for care facilities in Qualicum Beach include Eagle Park and The Gardens. At The Gardens seniors are offered the ability to age in place. The choice allows cou-ples to stay together in the same facility as their care needs

change over the years.Parksville’s seniors care facilities include Stanford

Place, Trillium Lodge, Cokely Manor Arrowsmith Lodge and Hustwick Place built by the local Lions Club.

In addition, groups like the Lions Club, Royal Canadian Legion branches and others operate seniors living apart-ments throughout the district.

The Vancouver Island Health Authority’s (VIHA) assist-ed living program provides rental accommodation with hospitality services and personal care assistance for se-niors and people with physical disabilities. It supports in-dependence and community living for people who need a safe environment and help to manage daily living tasks.

Publicly funded assisted living is provided by VIHA, of-ten in conjunction with BC Housing through Independent Living BC and in partnership with private and non-prof-it operators. If there is permanent decline in someone’s health, a significant increase in care needs, or inability to make decisions on their own, people may move from as-sisted living to a higher level of care.

Many of the area’s facilities include independent living with virtually no help, up to residential care options that provide 24-hour professional care.

BRENDA GOUGH

The senior care facilities in Parksville and Qualicum Beach provide everything from long term care to spectacular active retirement living. Here the seniors at Stanford Place enjoy a sing-a-long, one of the many activities offered at the residential care facility.

SENIORS SERVICES & ORGANIZATIONS

Planning for healthy aging takes some thought and ef-fort. Luckily, living in the District 69 area makes it easier to find activities to stay active and healthy.

When seeking out senior-specific information and re-sources on matters such as health, special interest groups or local fitness opportunities there are many places in District 69 worth considering.

Seniors centres in Nanoose Bay, Parksville and Qual-icum Beach are logical places to begin, as is the local chapter of the Old Age Pensioners Club. Call 250-752-8217.

The Parksville Golden Oldies Sports Association (PGOSA) is a great resource for anyone looking to stay active and take part in social events. The group has been dedicated to helping people in the community maintain an active, healthy lifestyle for 20 years, and their list of activities is extensive. With an atmosphere that promotes camaraderie it is not surprising their membership is well over 1,000. For more information on the group visit www.pgosa.org or call 250-752-9499.

The Regional District of Nanaimo’s Active Living Guide is a helpful resource for anyone looking for a favour-ite activity, or looking to try something new. The guide comes out each spring and fall, with hundreds of listings for everything from arts to hobby and service clubs and contacts for recreational organizations. It can be found online at www.rdn.bc.ca or you can pick up a copy at

Oceanside Place Arena, Ravensong Aquatic Centre and the Parksville Community and Conference Centre.

At the Society of Organized Services (SOS) in Parks-ville, Dawn Barry is the seniors’ coordinator who will address almost any inquiry. Barry is available by ap-pointment, and can connect seniors with many services, organizations and resources that they require. Call 250-248-2093, ext. 239. SOS offers many seniors’ programs, including:

• Seniors Are Talking group — weekly discussions about matters of concern to seniors, socialization and some field trips.

• Seniors’ Connection — a one-on-one program to help people identify their specific needs, from health challenges to taxes and benefit forms, and help them ac-cess the required resources.

• Meals on Wheels — a meal delivery program to assist people in maintaining their independence by providing hot, nutritious, meals at a reasonable cost, delivered three times each week.

• Medical Transportation — volunteer drivers trans-port local residents to medical appointments, and drive them back home again.

“There are a lot of seniors in our community,” explained Barry. “We’re trying to connect with them and help them maintain a better quality of life.”

SENIORS SAFETY & SECURITY

The Society of Organized Services in District 69 strives to serve all residents in the region, providing, a nurturing and supportive environment for children, youth, adults, seniors and families alike.

Seniors play an integral part in the SOS communi-ty, and seniors programs include ‘Medical Appoint-ment Transportation Service’ and ‘Meals on Wheels’ and the ever-popular ‘Seniors are Talking’ as well as ‘Seniors Connection.’

Some say experience is the best teacher and the SOS definitely benefits from the collective wisdom of its members. Many seniors contribute to the commu-nity at large, learn new skills and meet new people by generously volunteering to share their valuable time and expertise in a wide array of SOS programs; from childcare to the Thrift Store. One member, Lil Jarvis, is 92 years young and has been sharing her energy with the SOS for over 40 years!

The SOS is home to several programs aimed at assist-ing with specialized tasks such as ‘Income Tax Prepa-ration’ in addition to promoting personal develop-ment through classes such as ‘Hatha Yoga,’ workshops

on ‘Personal Growth’ and a Zumba exercise class for participants in TIC TAC, a program for children and their family caregivers. SOS is also a resource for those in crisis, and the Hardship and Emergency Support and Referral program provides immediate assistance and gives direction to support self-sufficiency.

Serving the community as a whole means SOS also offers a wide variety of programs that cater to various groups, ranging from music and games in ‘Preschool-ers on the Move’ to dinner and group activities on ‘Family Night.’ Various school-aged children’s pro-grams are also available, including ‘Girl Talk’ and ‘Guyz Time,’ ‘After School Education Assistance,’ and the ‘St. John Ambulance Babysitting Course.’

Teens feel welcomed and understood at SOS with programs like ‘Teen Nite’ ‘Middle School Nite’ and ‘Teens in Transition’ as well as a ‘Grad Wear’ program that dresses/suits graduates up for their big day.

Young or old, in a stroller or on a skateboard or scooter, the Society of Organized Services is for everyone! Call 250-248-2093 for more information, or go to www.sosd69.com.

SOS has something for everyonePETER MCCULLY PHOTO

HEALTH, EDUCATION & FINANCE

NEWS FILE PHOTO

Citing the importance of seniors to the area, Minister of State for Seniors Ralph Sultan (second from right) chose to launch the Better at Home program at the SOS in Parksville in April 2013 with (from left): SOS executive director Renata Sutherland, former Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon, SOS co-founder Edith Chamberlayne and United Way COO Deborah Irvine.

Parksville Qualicum Beach offers a wide array of health and educational services for older adults.

There are many educational opportunities avail-able to seniors through local governments, schools and non-profit organizations.

The Parksville Vancouver Island (VIU) University campus offers Elder College (www.viu.ca/eldercollege) available to people 50 and over, with general interest classes taught by expert volunteers and very low annual membership and per-course fees. ElderCollege features casual, social classes that offer a lot of lively, informative discussion and no quizzes or grades. VIU also has a num-ber of adult basic education, continuing education and university transfer courses open to everyone.

The Society of Organized Services (SOS) runs programs for people of all ages, and seniors can take advantage of the Seniors Are Talking program. This program offers se-niors a friendly, comfortable place for social interaction, problem solving and brainstorming around common concerns. Topics include health, safety, housing and se-niors’ benefits, with guest speakers and monthly excur-sions.

“We keep the program fun, and also offer seniors the opportunity to take a proactive role in issues that affect

them,” says seniors coordinator Dawn Barry. The SOS (www.sosd69.com) is also the local provid-

er of a new program called Oceanside Better at Home, which is a partnership with United Way and funded by the Government of British Columbia.

“The Oceanside Better at Home program allows se-niors to age at home with dignity, by helping with every-day tasks such as light housekeeping, friendly visiting and non-medical drives,” says program coordinator Jane Wil-liams. It’s meant to compliment existing local programs and those provided through regional health authorities. Check www.betterathome.ca for more information.

The SOS also offers tax preparation and benefit appli-cation programs, helping low income seniors file their re-turns and complete the proper paperwork to ensure they get the benefits they are entitled to. Through the Seniors’ Connection program, SOS can assess the needs of indi-vidual seniors to determine individual needs, and help them access local resources.

There are many general practitioners and health services in the area including the Island Health’s new Oceanside Health Centre, an urgent and primary care health facility.

SENIORS LEISURE & RECREATION

The list of fun and meaningful activities for seniors to en-joy in Parksville and Qualicum Beach is immense and all re-tirees have to do is make the effort to take advantage of them.

The Parksville Golden Oldies Sports Association (PGOSA) has been getting people in touch with sports in the commu-nity since 1993.

According to one of the founding members, Peter Kucey PGOSA started with just 31 people initially but now boasts over 1000 members who participate in a wide variety of sporting activities.

“Our growing numbers are a testament to the fact you’re never too old to try.”

Membership is open to people 55 years and older who want to maintain an active, healthy and social lifestyle.

Kucey agreed hockey and slo-pitch have been their biggest draws but recently the demand for pickle ball has been on the rise.

Although some PGOSA teams represent at the BC Seniors Games Kucey said you do not have to be a serious athlete to take part in their long list of activities and everyone is wel-come.

For some social interaction and mild exercise on the green there are two local lawn bowling clubs carrying on the tradi-

tion of one of the friendliest sports around. The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club is open from May until

September and every April holds an open house to demon-strate the sport to new members.

The Qualicum Beach club is one of the few facilities in North America that has both indoor and outdoor greens so those who love their “bowls” can play year round.

You don’t have to be a snowbird to golf 365 days a year in our mild climate. Admittedly there can be a few winter days when die hard golfers may have to wait for the frost to melt before they can tee off from any of the areas seven golf greens.

The early risers can always practice their putting at one of the three mini-golf courses in the area.

Aquatic programs tailored to seniors are offered by the Re-gional District of Nanaimo (RDN) at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach.

The RDN also offers courses covering a wide range of ac-tivities from guided hikes to yoga.

The four Probus clubs give retirees from the business world an opportunity to maintain a social network and have fun at the same time.

Both the Parksville and Qualicum Beach seniors centres also have a wide variety of programs to offer.

SENIORS TRANSPORTATION

For some people, getting older means an increasing reliance on alternate ways to get around.

Fortunately for seniors who require transportation — whether due to limited mobility or not having access to a car— there’s an established network of transportation options.

HandyDart is one well known service, available by appointment for those unable to access traditional tran-sit. Call 250-248-4557.

The SOS (Society of Organized Services) offers Medical Appointment Transportation, a volunteer driver program that will transport seniors to medical appointments and back home in Parksville or Quali-cum Beach. Program coordinator Lorna Szpradowski, explained that the program helps those in need get to local health appointments, with around 40 volunteers ready to offer a ride, based on availability.

Seniors needing a ride are asked to make their request at least 48 hours before their appointment time.

SOS offers non-medical rides through the Oceanside Better at Home program, a new program designed for seniors age 65 or over. “We are always trying to improve,” says SOS executive director Renate Sutherland. “Our

Better at Home program helps seniors with simple day-to-day tasks as well as non-medical rides.”

For more information on SOS services for seniors, call Dawn Barry, seniors coordinator at 250-248-2093, ext. 239. For medical appointment transportation, contact Lorna Szpradowski at local 222, and for Oceanside Better at Home Services, contact Jane Williams at local 248, or visit www.sosd69.com for more information.

For longer distance medical appointments in Nanaimo, Duncan and Victoria, Wheels for Wellness is a by-donation service that can assist at 1-250 338-0196.

Of course Oceanside is seeing gradually improved transit service as well with the addition of a total of 21 weekly trips on routes #90 and #88, including a stop at the new Oceanside Health Centre.

There is also a morning bus from Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach that runs direct to the ferry terminal in Nanaimo with dedicated, same-day return service in the evening.

For schedule information and more go to www.bctransit.com/regions/nan/ or call 250-954-1001.

VOLUNTEER

Staying connected to your community often changes when you retire. While in the workforce, you are con-nected to your business associates, and often, contacts and friendships made through raising a young family. But after you retire, some of those social structures are difficult to maintain. Volunteering may offer a solution to seniors who are making that transition.

“Volunteering is an excellent way to become part of a social network again,” says Andy Telfer, coordinator of volunteer resources at the Society of Organized Ser-vices. “Next to the desire to give back to the community, connecting with other people is a top reason that people volunteer.”

This is especially true for newcomers, who may have left decades-old friendships when they retired and moved to the Oceanside area.

According to a 2010 pan-Canadian research study, volunteering is a two-way relationship that needs to meet the goals of the volunteer and the organization, and volunteering in groups appeals to all ages for social and business networking. Plus, choosing the right or-ganization is top of mind with those looking to donate their time.

“I heard that the SOS was a good organization,” says Wendy McLean, who recently started volunteering with SOS. “I lost my husband years ago so I was also looking for the social interaction. And it’s good to feel useful.”

Savvy organizations ensure volunteers feel as though they are contributing something of value, and SOS works hard to match volunteers with their skill set. It’s important for volunteers to communicate the areas that they are interested in, and to choose an organization that offers positions they are looking for. That being said, it might be fun to pick up a new skill, or for a former CEO to step away from a leadership role, and try on a more supportive role for a change.

With the wealth of volunteer opportunities in the Oceanside area, retirees will have no trouble connect-ing, or reconnecting to their community. To volunteer at SOS, call 250-248-2093, ext. 230.
