SAINTLY FOOD FOR THOUGHT

St. Andrew the Apostle, Feast Day Nov. 30

“Love is acceptance. When you love someone…you take them into your heart, and that is surely why it hurts so much when we lose someone we love, because we lose a part of ourselves.” As we conclude this month in which we honor the deceased, I found this quote to be particularly meaningful. Of all the virtues, the Bible tells us that it is love which is the most powerful (1 Cor 13:1). You may not truly feel the power of love, until you lose someone who you loved dearly or someone who loved you dearly. Often times, we take for granted our loved ones being present to us. Sometimes the love shown to us isn’t the warm, fluffy kind, and we may not immediately recognize it as being love at all. However, nothing is guaranteed in this life. One day we may have a loved one at our side, and the next we may lose them to an accident or illness. Therefore, we must always try to act with love, for we are not guaranteed the next moment to do so. There will be an Advent Morning of Reflection on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. in the OLL Community Room. Title: A Fresh Perspective on the Season of Advent. DESCRIPTION: The Sunday readings for the season of Advent invite us to reflect upon the upcoming birth of Jesus as well as prepare us for the future return of Christ. As the first season of the Church Year, it is a season of hope! How can we manifest this hope into a spirit of stewardship that is so central to how we live-out our Catholic identity? We will explore an answer to this question using the Sunday Advent Scripture readings.

Dr. Daniel Scholz will be our presenter, and he will base his talk on the Advent Scripture readings. Dan is a Scripture Scholar and has taught Scripture at Pius XII High School, St. Francis Seminary and Cardinal Stritch University. He is a frequent presenter at parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Dr. Scholz is an engaging speaker with a good sense of humor. ALL FAITH DENOMINATIONS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND. There is no charge, but a free will offering will be accepted to help provide more opportunities like this in the future. Registration is appreciated, but not required. Contact Deb Hamm with questions.

Ez. 34:11-12,15-17; 1 Cor. 15:20-26,28; Matt. 25:31-46

Today we hear about the Son of Man coming in his glory, when Christ will welcome all those who have been blessed by the Father. Those who have cared for the needs of others will be welcomed into the Kingdom and those who have ignored the needs of others will not. Some years ago, I attended a conference on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. Most people have heard of St. Ignatius, the founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), but I suspect most people aren’t that familiar with the Spiritual Exercises. I would like to suggest a very practical part of the Exercises that can be helpful as we begin to prepare in earnest for the coming of Christ at Christmas. It is called the daily examen. Take a few moments to quiet yourself and recognize that you are in the presence of God. Next, think about your day as you ponder these three questions: Where did I experience God today (in what people, events, things, etc.)? Where did I get in the way of God’s love, mercy and compassion (was I short with others, lazy, unwilling to compromise or forgive, etc.)? How can I change and be a better presence of Christ in the future? St. Ignatius suggests that this happen at night before we go to bed, but it can also be done in the morning, reflecting on the prior day and the day to come. It only takes a few minutes. I have been praying the examen for many years. There have been stretches in my life when things get crazy and I fall out of the habit. There is a definite difference in how I treat others when I fall away from this daily practice. When I actively reflect on my day, on where I saw Christ, on how I treated others and how I can do better next time, I am much more open to Christ in my life. When I don’t reflect on Christ’s presence, I tend to fall prey to my human failings and ultimately end up hurting others…sometimes those closest to me. Perhaps this can be a new Advent practice. If we can get into the habit of praying a daily examen during which we reflect on the ways we participate in Christ’s ministry, we too will be welcomed into heaven for the many ways we cared for God’s people.

If the local schools are closed or on a two-hour delay, please remember that there will be no Mass that day. Also, the parish offices would be closed if the schools are closed. If there is a two-hour delay, the offices will be open when the school opens.

Please don’t forget that this is the time of year when any glass memorials should be removed from the cemeteries. They could fill up with water, freeze and then shatter. Also, any dead plants should be removed.

When successful New York ad executive Howard Inlet (Will Smith) suffers a personal tragedy and retreats from life, his friends devise a drastic plan to reach him before he loses everything. PG-13. 96 minutes. Bring your own snacks.

MOVIES WITH MEANING

The Renovation Calendar Raffle is underway. It is a two- month calendar where a $300 winner will be chosen every Monday and Wednesday in February and March. Tickets are $20 each and this fundraiser could potentially bring in $15,000. Only 1,000 tickets are being sold. That is where we need your help! Would you be willing to sell 5, 10 or more to your friends, family members, co-workers? These also make a great Christmas gift! Contact Jodi Keller (262-689-4253 or [email protected]) or Susan at the Parish Office (920-994-4380 or [email protected]). All ticket stubs need to be turned in by the middle of January.

Our renovation project is getting closer! Beginning after Thanksgiving, some of our statues and the Stations of the Cross will be removed in preparation for the work that needs to be done. Our statues will be cleaned and touched up and returned at the completion of the renovation. If you are one of those folks who has been meaning to donate to this project and hasn’t gotten around to it, now would be a good time. If you haven’t given much thought to a donation, please prayerfully consider how you can help make our chapel beautiful!

Ladies Night Out II - Dec. 13 If you were unable to join us for the first Ladies Night Out with Lynn Palmer, you are in luck; we will be having a Christmas themed evening at 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 13! There will be hot cocoa, apple cider, popcorn, and cookies to begin the evening. The cost for this event will be $25 dollars payable by cash or check that evening. Please RSVP the name and contact info of each lady, as well their choice of Nativity Scene or Christmas tree to Amanda Gronemeyer at 920-994-4380 or [email protected] by Dec. 8. Our Lady of the Lakes regularly attends these events; if you are interested in joining us, please contact Amanda Gronemeyer at 920-447-2530.
