Are you starting to think about what sports your child might want to play in the future? Are you wondering how or when to get them started in sport?

Well it turns out that children between the ages of three and six have the ability to develop a solid base for any sport they wish to play in the future. Developing this skill base can be achieved through learning fun-damental physical literacy skills. With the creation of a program called ‘Run, Jump, Throw’ there is the means with which to start your child on the path to a life full of enjoyment through physical activity. As you may have guessed, this program teaches children the proper techniques for running, jumping, and throwing. Children who do not develop these basic skills early on in life often have a hard time learning them later on. So if you are thinking of starting your child in sport, this program is a great place to start.

If you are looking for a fun way to get your child interested in the great game of golf, there is a program designed specifi-cally for children and beginners alike. This program is called ‘Playground to Fairway’ and was developed by Golf BC. This pro-gram provides a significant advantage over the traditional way of learning golf, as the equipment is modified to suit the beginner, and all of the instruction is incorporated

into a fun learning environment. So while there is snow on the ground and all of the courses are closed, why not get your child involved in the rewarding sport of golf?

Thanks to a grant given to the City of Prince George, the Hart Community Asso-ciation was recently given the opportunity to train one of their volunteers in both of the exciting programs mentioned above. After taking the training, Hart Community Association volunteer Josh Bracey was very positive about the promise offered to chil-dren by the two programs.

“With more kids wanting to get into sport, I believe that it is incredibly impor-tant to make sure that they have a positive experience when they are first starting out, and after taking this training I believe that these two programs deliver sound funda-mental sports training as well as letting the kids have fun through sport.”

If you are interested in signing your child up for either of these programs, please call the Hart Community Association (250) 970-0240 or go online and register through the community active living guide on the City of Prince George website www.princege-orge.ca. The Hart Community Association will be offering a Playground to Fairway course for parents and children (ages 7-12), as well as a Run, Jump, Throw program (for children ages 3-6) starting in the New Year.
