Bullying Survey Bullying is a problem in schools and ours is no different than any others. We must know bullying is very different today than it was 10 years ago. One of the biggest reasons is due to the fact that we are socially connected 24 hours a day with email, texting, and social media websites such as Facebook. Public Safety Canada defines bullying this way:- An imbalance of power (real or perceived) manifested

through aggressive actions, physical or psychological (including verbal or social);

- Negative interactions that are direct (face-to-face) or indirect (gossip, exclusion)

- Negative actions with an intention to harm. These can include some or all of the following;

- Physical actions (punching, kicking, biting), - Verbal actions (threats, name calling, insults, ethnoculturally-based or sexual comments) - Social exclusion (spreading rumours, ignoring,

gossiping, excluding).- Negative actions thst are repeated. Either the intensity

or the duration of the actions establishes the bully's dominance over the victim.

One of my main goals at Wawanesa School is to try to eliminate or at least drastically reduce the occurrences of bullying amongst our students in school and out of school. I have posted a school survey on the Wawanesa School homepage http://web.mac.com/keithm3/Wawanesa_School/Welcome.html. The purpose of the school survey is to identify problem areas in our school, so we can focus resources in these areas. Please feel free to view the survey at your leisure. Students in grades 5-12 will be completing the survey in class. Look for results in a future newsletter. What are we doing as a school?• Classroom visits and lessons with our guidance counselor Mrs. Borton.• Several learning outcomes in the Health Curriculum focuses on this topic.• Guest speakers, Rachel's Challenge, wellness fairs.• Videos and articles.• Survey to help identify problem areas or grades. I realize that this is a huge undertaking and a goal that is not easily obtainable; it’s going to take months or years and will be an on going process with students, parents, staff and the community as a whole. Please feel free to contact me at the school 483-6286 or by email at [email protected]
