Welcome note to the membershipWelcome, friends and colleagues, to the 67th Annual Conference at the beautiful Newport Marriott.

We have planned a conference with sessions that we hope are interesting, intriguing, supportive and just plain fun! As you plan your session attendance, remember to make time to visit the exhibitors’ area to see what our vendor colleagues have to offer. In addition to learning at the sessions offered, we hope that you visit with friends and make new acquaintances establishing the NEACRAO connection with colleagues. As always, we invite you to consider joining the organization if you are not already a member, and perhaps submitting a session proposal for 2015. It’s never too early!

On behalf of the Executive Board and Council, best wishes for a great conference!

Sincerely,

Marcia Rosbury-HennePresident, 2013-2014

What does NEACRAO stand for?NEACRAO is the New England regional association of AACRAO, the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, whose purpose is “to promote the advancement of higher education in its fullest and broadest implications.” We are an all-volunteer organization dedicated to supporting close to 1,000 members representing approximately 400 institutions from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Challenge yourself in a new direction, make life-long friends, and have fun doing it!

How can I get involved?• Facilitate a session: introduce a session at Reverse College Day or the Annual Conference and coordinate evaluations. Easy to do and a quick way to get involved!

• Join a committee: most committees work with the vice presidents to create Annual Conference and RCD sessions and activities for the organization.

• Serve as a co-chair: co-chairs coordinate and run the various portions of RCD and the Conference.

• Join the Board: the Executive Board governs the Association and is responsible for its overall activities and functions. Attendance at day or day-and-a-half meetings in January, March, and June are expected.Check out all the committees, co-chairs, and Executive Board positions on page 23!

5 reasons the Annual Conference can help you make a difference in the workplace, community, and personally.1. Great information. This is a great professional development opportunity to learn the latest trends in higher education. This year we have a focus on service and transformational learning.

2. Expand your professional network. Mingle with other new and experienced professionals from New England as we discuss issues pertinent to admissions and registrar’s offices today.

3. Be inspired. Hear motivating stories about the impact of service and experiential education from Len Gengel from the BeLikeBrit charity and Keith Westrich from Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. See pages 6 and 10 for more information on these inspiring people.

4. Discover. Hear about new products from other schools that can improve your service to students and enhance efficiencies. Also learn about those pesky things to avoid during implementation!

5. Amazing value. Think of the types of sessions and topics you would see at a large conference costing thousands of dollars; you receive the same at NEACRAO Annual Conference for a fraction of the cost and only a short distance away! See below for cost information.

College student Britney Gengel sent this text to her mother hours before the 2010 earthquake that claimedherlifeinHaiti:

“They love us so much and everyone is so happy. They love what they have and they work so hard to get nowhere, yet they are all so appreciative. I want to move here and start an orphanage myself.” -BritneyGengel,1/12/10

BritneyGengeltraveledtoHaitiwithLynnUniversityon a humanitarian trip and died in the earthquake a dayafterarriving.VowingthatBrit’sdeathwouldnotbe in vain, Len and Cherylann Gengel, along with sons Bernie and Richie, kept alive Britney’s dream by building an orphanage in Grand Goave, Haiti. The orphanage is not just a charity focusing on Haiti and theUS,butamovement, acausefordoingtherightthing, to make the world a better place.

Len Gengel was delighted to accept NEACRAO’s invitation to talk about “transformational” learning and the connection of their organization to higher education, as well as their daughter, whose legacy lives on through the orphanage they built in her name.

Note from the NEACRAO Executive Board: The Gengels would not accept a speaker’s fee as they do not draw salaries from the charitable foundation. Instead, NEACRAO is purchasing a copy of their book Heartache and Hope in Haiti for conference attendees with 100% of the book sales going back to the orphanage.
