I love going into each classroom and presenting character education lessons for your children. They are all so receptive and eager to improve not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well. In conjunction with the Bully prevention/ awareness month in October, we created a bully prevention theme for this month using our school mascot the bear. It reads, ?I can? t ?BEAR? to be a bully, I? ll ?PAWS? to be a friend.? Luckily for us, two middle school girls from our drawing class were willing to draw and paint a large mural of bears playing together. During our lesson about being respectful we talked about the differences between mean, rude or bullying. It is important to distinguish between these behaviors so that teachers, school administrators, parents and kids will know how to address these behaviors. All three of these negative behaviors need attention but the interventions need to be dealt with differently. I have seen that gratuitous references to bullying are creating a bit of a ?little boy who cried wolf? phenomena. In other words, if kids improperly classify rudeness and mean behavior as bullying? whether to simply make conversation or to bring attention to their short-term discomfort? we all run the risk of becoming so sick and tired of hearing the word that this actual life-and-death issue among young people loses its urgency as quickly as it rose to prominence. The main distinction between rude, mean and bullying have to do with intentions. RUDE= Unintentionally saying or doing something that hurts someone else. (burping in someone?s face, jumping ahead in line, poor manners) MEAN= Purposefully saying or doing something to hurt someone once (or twice- usually stems from angry feelings about a conflict that has occurred). BULLYING=Repeatedly saying or doing something hurtful,Intentional aggressive behaviors, involves an imbalance of Power. (R.I.P.) Can be physical, verbal or relational (threatening to take friendships away). There are many online resources for families to use and learn from. Here is one to check out: http:/ / signewhitson.com/ resources/ is-it-rude-is-it-mean-or-is-it-bullying/ My hope is that we can all learn to be respectful of each other and become a bully free community. Dear Parents,

I am so happy to be a part of such a great school! I love going into each classroom and presenting character education lessons for your children. They are all so receptive and eager to improve not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well. In conjunction with the Bully prevention/ awareness month in October, we created a bully prevention theme for this month using our school mascot the bear. SEM - 1st Grade Eat ing Utah

To wrap up our geography unit in Social Studies, first grade had a fun time making a Utah map with graham crackers, frosting and candy! We used blue sugar to identify the Great Salt Lake; candy stars to mark Salt Lake City; candy corns for the Wasatch Mountains; and a red Twizzlers string to identify I-15. Of course the best part was being able to eat our map at the end. Utah is so much YUM!

Inspirations Contest is coming soon!

The theme this year is:

?What Makes Me?.Me.? This art contest will focus on children recognizing and expressing their uniqueness. The divisions will be K-2nd, 3rd-5th grade, 6th-8th grade, 9th. Students may submit 1 entry in as many categories as they like. Any middle school student who submits three entries is eligible for the Art Pin. The following categories are Literary Composit ion, Musical Composit ion, Visual Art , 3D Art, Photography, Theater, Choreography/Dance, Film/Video and Digital Art . Due dates are not unt il Jan 26th, but get creat ive and brainstorm ideas. We want everyone to part icipate!

Interested in working with one of our clusters or have a career you would like to share and tell students about? Please contact Mrs. Ryan or Mrs. Edman [email protected] [email protected]
