In Stephen Spielberg's film, "Saving Private Ryan", a squadron of young soldiers is sent on a mission to find one particular soldier behind enemy lines and bring him

out of danger and home. Most of the men in the group, including the captain, die in the rescue attempt. As the captain lies wounded and dying, his last words to Ryan are, "Earn this." At the end of the film, Private Ryan, now an old man, visits the grave of his captain in a ceme-tery in Normandy. As he kneels at the grave, while his wife and children stand off in the background, he says, "Not a day goes by I don't think about what happened. And I just want you to know… I've tried. Tried to live my life the best I could. I hope that's enough. I didn't invent anything. I didn't cure any diseases. I worked a farm. I raised a family. I lived a life. I only hope in your eyes, at least, I earned what you did for me." Jesus says, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." What does this mean? It's not really about being wealthy or poor. It's really about being willing to trust in God and allow ourselves to be saved by Jesus Christ, His Son. Being "poor in spirit" means we are willing to follow and not let pride get in the way.

One of the ways that we can follow Christ to the Father is by looking at the lives of the saints. They have paved the way for us, just like the cap-tain in the movie paved the way by his sacrifice for Private Ryan. He made sure that the captain's death was not wasted on him. We can make this same connection to Christ's death on the cross. Does it mean some-thing to us? Or do we say that his death was meant for someone else, not me? When we give honor to the saints, it's a way to remind ourselves that we are on the same journey that they were on. Picture a race. You're

at a track meet, for instance, and there's the crowd cheering the runners on to the finish line. Or better yet, the ones cheering have finished the race themselves and they are offering encouragement to ones still "on the journey". That's who the saints are to us in a sense. Their lives of faith encourage us on as we continue to do our best to live out our lives for ourselves and others. Jesus says to us, "Earn this!" The saints say to us, "Earn this!" And in the day to day circumstanc-es of our life, with our gifts and our flaws, our holiness and our sins, we "don't let a day go by that we don't

think about what happened"—how salvation was won for us. We also know that we are encouraged on

the way, living our lives for Christ.

May her soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy

of God, rest in peace. Amen.

What is the name of the book that is on the Altar during Mass. Why is it there?

NOVEMBER — All Souls Month

To remember our loved ones who have passed, we invite everyone to fill

out a prayer intention card — available at the church doors. All

cards will be placed in a basket at the Altar for special remembrance and

prayers this month.

St. John Neumann celebrated All Souls’ Day, Monday, November 2nd by remembering all

those who have gone before us. We especially honored those who have died in the past year:

each person’s name was announced and a candle lit in their memory. May all rest in peace.

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, virgin (1850—1917) Memorial: November 13th

Mother Cabrini was the first U.S. citizen to be canonized. She was born and grew up in Italy. Since childhood, Frances has wanted to be a missionary in China, but at the urging of Pope Leo XIII, she traveled west, together with six sisters to New York City to work with the thousands of Italian immigrants living there. She found disappointment and difficulties with every step: the house intended to be her first orphanage was not available; she was told to return home. But, she left the archbishop’s office ever-determined to fulfill her mission. And she did. In thirty-five years, she founded sixty-seven institutions dedicated to caring for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated and the sick; she organized schools and adult education classes.

This weekend we celebrate the dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran —

Why do we honor the dedication of a building, a church?

The liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church is filled with feasts of the saints and commemorations of events in the life of Christ. But there are also occasional feasts that aren’t related to the saints or Christ.

In every diocese in the world, the anniversary of the dedication of their cathedral is observed as a local feast day, usually with a Mass at the cathedral offered for the people of the diocese. Because the cathedral is the spiritual headquarters of the local church, its dedication is a special occasion.

The Basilica of St. John Lateran, in Rome, holds a special place in the memory of the Church. St. John Lateran was first dedicated by Pope Sylvester I, in the year 324. When centuries of persecution ended with Constantine's 313 edict granting Christians the right to publicly practice their faith, St. John Lateran became the first basilica where Christians were able to worship freely in public. It is the oldest church in the West. It is the episcopal seat of the pope as the Bishop of Rome. (Most people presume that St. Peter's Basilica is the cathedral church of Rome, but the honor actually belongs to St. John Lateran.)

Throughout its long history, St. John Lateran has hosted five ecumenical councils. The Baldachino over the main altar is said to contain relics of the Apostles Peter and Paul. And the nave of the church is lined with exquisite marble statues of the apostles, by the Italian master Bernini.

We have a feast day honoring the dedication of this Roman church because of the historical and spiritual importance the basilica holds for the entire Church.

When visiting, plan to spend ample time in the Treasury which is home to a museum of beautiful vessels, vestments and reliquaries and an amazing collection of relics (including fragments of holy items from Christ’s Passion) — to name a few:

• The cross • Thorn of the crown • The column of the flagellation • The Virgin Mary

• St. John the Baptist • St. Mary Magdalene’s

penitential chain • St. Joseph of Arimathea • St. John the Evangelist &

his tunic • St. Helen’s arm (she res-

cued many relics from Jerusalem)

• Chains of St. John the Evangelist

• Roman martyrs • St. Catherine of Siena

• St. Marcellinus • St. Peter • St. Barbara • Cloth stained with St. Cecelia’s

blood • St. Dominic & tunic • St. Anthony of Padua & tunic • St. Francis of Assisi & his habit • St. Vincent de Paul • St. Sebastian • St. Charles Borromeo • St. Pius X
