Exalted Rulers Column
Members,
I can hardly believe it is already November, the weather is turning colder and
the leaves are still falling.
The Halloween Dance was a fun time, we just wish more people had come
out for it. Thanks to Shady and Dave Orth for putting it on.
The Turkey Raffle is over and was again a success, thanks to Kathy Frommeyer and her tireless work on
getting it organized. Of course it could not have been a success without all of the help she received from
everyone and from all the people and members that came out to attend. Thanks to everyone that worked
and the ones that just came out to enjoy the dinner and spent their money on raffles. Thanks is also sent
out to Debbie Rawe for working so hard on the Reverse Raffle and all the members that sold the tickets.
Coming up this month are all the things we do in November, the Anniversary Dinner for Members and their
spouses, the Veterans visit for their Thanksgiving Dinner, also getting prepared for Christmas.
We will be decorating for Christmas right before Thanksgiving. Please come up Nov 19th at 2pm and
help decorate our lodge and bring a dish to share so we can enjoy a meal after decorating is complete.
I’d like to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving of your own. As we approach the Christmas Holidays,
please keep other families that may not be as privileged as ourselves in your thoughts, and give of your time
or donations to the needy and under-privileged. Say prayers for those away from home, and those who are
ill or in distress in any way.
Fran and I want to express our sincerest condolences to our good friend, Secretary Russ Cramer on
the loss of his wife and our friend Carol, she will be missed. Russ if you need us for anything please ask.
Sincerely , Dan Bray Exalted Ruler, PSP, PER
Traveling with the "Prez"
October found us away 3 weekends. We attended the Indiana State Convention, in Indy. Very interesting to see how other states do their conventions. Indiana State President Tony Vester and his wife Kim were very gracious hosts.
Then we went to Paducah Lodge for their 125th anniversary celebration. They held a reception followed by a delicious dinner. Then Paducah member Kevin Nelson put on a slide show that took us through the history of Paducah Elks. We really enjoyed the evening, and got some ideas for Newport's 125th in two years.
Next, we attended the Past State President's retreat in Shelbyville. Although Bill had to go to a day long meeting, I got to spend some time with other wives from across the state and go shopping. I had fun, can't say the same for Bill.
Even though Bill's term isn't up till February, we will be finished with our lodge visits soon. We only have one lodge left, Ashland in November, then we can relax, and enjoy the upcoming Holidays.
Bill and Kathy

Carol Cramer was moved from the Highlands Therapy Rehab Center back to the hospital and is currently in
the ICU. (Note from Fran 10/24) It was just brought to my attention that Carol passed away on October
24th, 2016. She was Russ Cramer’s wife and best friend. She was a long time member and she will be sorely
missed by her family and friends. In the past year, she has been through a lot. Go in peace my friend, you are
in your Lord’s arms now.

him, he is home and trying to recover from multiple health issues due to Cancer.

our members living in Colorado Springs Co. He found out recently he has to be treated for Throat Cancer

out what his next steps are. He needs as many prayers as we can send, for a full recovery.
Aline Jacobs is making progress and is still in rehab therapy after breaking her hip, she needs our prayers,
and hopefully she will be back at the lodge eating dinner soon.

better Carol.

Can Tab Collections
We have collected 75 lbs. of pull tabs to recycle for Ronald McDonald House. Please help us collect the aluminum can tabs from your soft drink and beer cans by removing them from the top of your canned drink and placing them in the bowl on top of the blue recycling trash can. You can also hand them to Janet Arnold or our bartender, Kathy Hargett.
These little tabs are recycled and the money received for the aluminum helps subsidize the lodging costs for families of very sick children at the Ronald McDonald House. Thank you so much to everyone for contributing to this effort.

Chicken Tortilla Casserole by Trisha Yearwood
Ingredients
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
Salt
Chicken Gravy, recipe follows
1 cup canned green chiles, chopped and drained
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 cup sour cream
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Cooking spray
Twenty-four 6-inch corn tortillas
3 cups shredded Cheddar
Chicken Gravy:
6 tablespoons butter
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup chicken stock
1 cup milk
Salt and pepper
Directions
Add the chicken to a large stockpot, cover with water and add a large pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 30
minutes. Remove the chicken from the pot and set aside to cool. When cool enough to handle, shred the chicken and set aside.
Reserve 3 1/3 cups of the broth (1 cup is for the chicken gravy, supplement with boxed stock if you don't have enough.)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 13- by 9-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
In a large saucepan, combine 2 1/3 cups of the reserved broth, the Chicken Gravy, green chiles, onions, garlic, sour cream, cumin,
salt and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat.
Spread 1 cup of the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Arrange a layer of 6 tortillas over the mixture, and then top with 1 cup
shredded chicken and 1/2 cup of the Cheddar. Repeat this layer three more times, ending with cheese. Spread any remaining mix-
ture over the cheese. Make sure all of the tortillas are covered or they will get very hard during baking. Bake uncovered for 30
minutes.
Chicken Gravy:
Melt the butter in a medium saucepan and whisk in the flour to make a roux. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until
the mixture bubbles and the flour turns light brown in color. Gradually whisk in the stock and milk and continue to stir while cook-
ing over medium heat. When the mixture thickens, after about 5 minutes, whisk in some salt and pepper.

Chicken Noodle Soup by Tyler Florence
Ingredients
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 medium carrots, cut diagonally into 1/2-inch-thick slices
2 celery ribs, halved lengthwise, and cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices
4 fresh thyme sprigs
1 bay leaf
2 quarts chicken stock, recipe follows
8 ounces dried wide egg noodles
1 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 handful fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped
Chicken Stock:
1 whole free-range chicken (about 3 1/2 pounds), rinsed, giblets discarded
2 carrots, cut in large chunks
3 celery stalks, cut in large chunks
2 large white onions, quartered
1 head of garlic, halved
1 turnip, halved
1/4 bunch fresh thyme
2 bay leaves
1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
Directions
Watch how to make this recipe.
Place a soup pot over medium heat and coat with the oil. Add the onion, garlic, carrots, celery, thyme and bay leaf. Cook and stir
for about 6 minutes, until the vegetables are softened but not browned. Pour in the chicken stock and bring the liquid to a boil.
Add the noodles and simmer for 5 minutes until tender. Fold in the chicken, and continue to simmer for another couple of
minutes to heat through; season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving.
Chicken Stock:
Place the chicken and vegetables in a large stockpot over medium heat. Pour in only enough cold water to cover (about 3 quarts);
too much will make the broth taste weak. Toss in the thyme, bay leaves, and peppercorns, and allow it to slowly come to a boil.
Lower the heat to medium-low and gently simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, partially covered, until the chicken is done. As it cooks,
skim any impurities that rise to the surface; add a little more water if necessary to keep the chicken covered while simmering.
Carefully remove the chicken to a cutting board. When its cool enough to handle, discard the skin and bones; hand-shred the meat
into a storage container.
Carefully strain the stock through a fine sieve into another pot to remove the vegetable solids. Use the stock immediately or if you
plan on storing it, place the pot in a sink full of ice water and stir to cool down the stock. Cover and refrigerate for up to one week
or freeze.
Yield: 2 quarts
