Dear Schomre Israel Family,

The Jewish calendar, replete with holidays, contains two days on which we celebrate theTorah. One is the sixth and seventh of Sivan commemorating the anniversary of receivingthe Torah on Mount Sinai. Simchas Torah, on the 23rd of Tishrei, We dance with the To-rah, celebrating, this time, completing the yearly cycle and then immediately restarting

the reading once again.

The Dubner Maggid explains The two separate holidays with the following story. Many years ago therelived a king and queen who had wealth, fame, and fortune, but they never had a child. No matter whatthey tried, no matter which doctor they went to nothing seemed to help and they weren't blessed with anoffspring. After many years alone, they heard that there was a sorcerer ,who through magical powerscould grant them their wish.

They went to visit the sorcerer who told them that they would have a child, a daughter, however therewas one condition to which they would have to agree. The precious child could not see a man from thetime of her birth until the time of her wedding. Neither the father nor any other man, no matter his age, could ever see that young child as she grew up.

They agreed; the queen became pregnant; she moved to an isolated castle where all of the staff werewomen. The child was indeed beautiful, intelligent and talented. She excelled in studies, the arts and mu-sic, however even her father could not see her.

When she came of age to be married the king issued a proclamation saying that The princess was seekinga suitor. He promised that his son-in-law would follow in his footsteps and would reign over the entireland.

Young men came from far and wide to seek the hand of the kings daughter. But one after another they

were told that they would not be able to see her until they stood together at the marriage canopy. Veryquickly, each Suitor drifted away, unwilling to take a chance, not willing to marry someone whom they could-n't see beforehand, no matter what reassurances of her beauty, intelligence and wisdom the king gave.

Only one young man remained, a loyal son of the king's most trusted aide who said, “I trust my king. If theprincess is even half of what I've heard about her I will be happy all the days of my life.” The royal wed-ding took place with a grand reception in honor of bride and groom. Six months later the new son-in-lawcame back to the king and said that he would like to make another party in honor of his new wife. Thisparty was far grander than the first one, the celebration with dancing, delectable foods and the most pre-cious wines. The king asked his son why did you make a second party now and why is it so lavish?

The wise prince now answered and said, I married your daughter because I believed you and relied on yourword; I trusted you and , knew that you would not mislead me. However, now that six months have passedand I've been together with your daughter, I see that in fact, she far excels anything that I dreamed pos-sible., with her wisdom, beauty and kindness I now want to make a new celebration in thanks and apprecia-tion for my wonderful wife whom I appreciate even better.

Says the Maggid, on Shavuot we celebrate receiving the Torah with a night of study in preparation for ac-cepting it. We received the Torah, not knowing what was inside of it. We accepted it with the belief thatsince it came from the Creator of the world, it would have to be full of wisdom and proper guidance. But af-ter having studied the Torah and actually experienced it, we realize the tremendous blessing that we have, having received God's word. We now Celebrate with dancing, joy and song with a fuller appreciation of thegift that we received, only now more deeply understanding the precious Torah we have.

Lucy and I appreciate the many kindnesses and acts of friendship that you the Schomre Israel family ex-tended us during our first weeks here. The warmth that you have shown us is truly heartwarming. Now thatwe have been here through the first cycle of the holidays, like the prince of the parable and like the Jew-ish people, we understand even deeper the inner beauty and goodness of the Congregation and you, thosewho make up this unique family.

I would like to express my thanks to you for the confidence expressed in selecting me to be the rabbi ofCongregation Schomre Israel. I am honored to follow a line of distinguished rabbis who served the Congre-gation and the Jewish community and look forward to continuing this beautiful tradition.

I view my role as a partnership with the leadership and the Congregation, making people at home, comfort-able, and also, at times, challenged by the Orthodox synagogue.

Lucy and I want you to feel comfortable with us, to be part of our family, and to feel at home in ourhome. Likewise, we want to become part of your family, for you to introduce us to your friends and let usbecome a part of your circles. One's personal level of observance should not be a deterrent to your welcom-ing us to your home as there can always be arrangements by which we can (feel comfortable) (be invited)and share an evening with you.

Our Shul should be more than the location to daven and the place to turn when in need, which it should mostcertainly be, but also it should be the traditional "Bet K'neset" - the Gathering Place of the People and

Honorable Mentchen

Mentch is a word that really can't be defined. It's what your parents said to you, when they toldyou to act properly in such a way that they would be proud.

There are many such mentchen in the congregation, too many really to list, Who step forwardwhenever help is needed; be it for bingo, for baking, to help make a minion, to put together and totake apart the Sukka, to help with the kiddush and help those in need.

Your help is greatly appreciated and in fact, a prayer is made for you every Shabbat at Beforethe Torah is returned to the ark.

He who blessed our forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — may He bless this entire holy congregationalong with all the holy congregations; them, their wives, sons, and daughters and all that is theirs; andthose who dedicate synagogues for prayer and those who enter them to pray, and those who give lampsfor illumination and wine for Kiddush and Havdalah, bread for guests and charity for the poor; and all whoare involved faithfully in the needs of the community — may the Holy One, Blessed is He, pay their re-ward and remove from them every affliction, heal their entire body and forgive their every iniquity, andsend blessing and success to all their handiwork, along with all Israel, their brethren . And let us say:Amen.(THE COMPLETE ARTSCROLL SIDDUR, PG. 451)

CHANUKAH

The first Chanukah candle is to be lit on Tuesday evening, December 16, 2014.

The history of the Festival of Lights is always inspiring, and worth re-learning. Whenthe Greek empire was split up after the death of Alexander of Macedonia in 323 B.C.E., the rulers of Pal-estine made continuous attempts to force our people to give up their own faith and to adopt Greek ideasand customs. However, it wasn’t until the advent, in 175 B.C.E., of King Antiochus in Syria that force wasemployed to impose Greek customs and ways of life. These acts naturally precipitated an uprising whichwas led by the Hasmonean family in Modin. Under the leadership of Judah the Maccabee, after severalyears of valiant fighting, they successfully drove the Syrians out. On the 25th of Kislev, in the year 165 B.C.E. they made their entrance into the Temple and rededicated it to the service of G-d. Upon entering theTemple, they found one cruse of pure oil bearing the seal of the High Priest. With this oil they rekindledthe Menorah. Miraculously the oil (sufficient for only one day) burnt for eight days which was time enoughto prepare fresh oil. In commemoration of the miracle, we light candles on Chanukah.

How the Lights are to be LitThe preferred way to perform the Mitzvah is to use pure olive oil as was used in the menorah in the Tem-ple. If this is not possible, ordinary candles may be used.

On the first night, the light on the extreme right of the menorah is kindled. The following night add theone immediately to the left of it and kindle it first, and so on for eight nights.

The lights are to be placed in a straight row; none higher or lower than the others. There should also besufficient space between one light and the next, so that each can be seen clearly and there is no possibilityof their joining together.

It is customary to have an additional light which acts as a “Shammash”, or attendant light, with which tokindle the others. The Chanukah lights themselves may not be used for any other purpose but the fulfill-ment of the Mitzvah, while one may derive benefit from the “Shammash”. The appropriate blessings to berecited when lighting the candles can be found in the Siddur (Birnbaum Siddur, p. 709). Following thekindling “Hanerat Halalu” and “Maoz Tzur” are sung.

Where the Lights are PlacedThe menorah should correctly be placed near a window or doorway in order that the commemoration ofthe miracle should be made public (pirsum hanes).

Proper Time for KindlingThe lights should be lit immediately upon the appearance of the stars. If one fails to do so, one may stillperform the Mitzvah through the remainder of the night provided the members of the household are stillawake. The lights should burn for at least half an hour, during which time no work should be done. Theobligation of Chanukah falls on both men and women.

Other Chanukah Customs1. Potato “latkes” and other milk foods are eaten.2. A popular game is played with a “dreidel” (a square spinning top containing the four Hebrew letters:nun, gimel, hey, shin). The letters stand for “nes gadol haya sham” - “a great miracle happened there”.3. Children are given a present of “Chanukah-gelt” (Chanukah money).
