In September I attended the Harvest Supper at The Barns and I can thoroughly recommend it. There was oodles offood not to mention the good company. See the front cover picture. On a more sombre note, it was disappointing tohave only 31 people at the October Moviola show. The Committee works hard to bring you these films. Pleasesupport our November film which is Mr Holmes, see page 11. A lot of work goes into setting up these film shows. Ifthey are not supported we will have to drop them. This year has provided a bumper apple crop and many people have found they have a surplus. On page 10 Jill Wilsonis suggesting what could be done in the future with this excess. Now that the evenings are drawing in it is essentialthat if you are out walking you are visible. Please wear something bright and preferably reflective. If you are walkingon the road remember it is far safer to face the oncoming traffic unless you are on a bend.Nobody has yet offered to take over editing the newsletter. Surely there must be somebody out there with a littlespare time who would like to put their mark on the newsletter. As I have said before, I am happy to help during atransition period. If no one steps forward there is a risk this newsletter will cease. Finally, as this newsletter includes the Christmas period, I would like to wish you all a happy and healthy Christmasand New Year, especially all those volunteers who deliver this to your door.

The Friends commenced their new programme for thecoming year on Thursday 24th September with a talk fromDale Greenwood entitled “Tales from a Blue Badge Guide”.

Dale explained that his career as a blue badge guidestarted with a very rigorous training period followed by awritten and practical exam. It was clear at this stage thatthe process was not for the faint hearted!Once qualified Dale was required to cover an area fromChichester to the Isle of Portland – a large area (includingthe Isle of Wight) with a lot of heritage sites!

However, it was evident from the tales and anecdotesthat he recounted to the Friends, that he thoroughly

enjoyed sharing the history and heritage of our countrywith people from many different areas of the world. The next meeting of the Friends will be on Wednesday11 November in the Barns at 7.30pm whenChristopherAmery will base his talk around ‘The Poetry of War”(Please note change of Day to Wednesday 11th of 11th).Friends and visitors very welcome.

Finally, please don’t forget the Friends ChristmasCoffee Morning to be held on 26 November 10.30 –12.30 at Smallberry Hill, Haccups Lane. All are welcome. (look for our advertisement in thisNewsletter).

THE FRIENDS OF MICHELMERSH CHURCH

ST ANDREWS CHURCHWork continues on the church. The water and electricitysupplies are in, I believe, and the scaffolding largelygone. The roof and tower look great, and has anupgraded lightning conductor. The tiles, though new, areless "bright" than I thought they would be, and in anycase they will quickly take on an aged look as theweather takes its toll on them. We are going ahead withthe Purbeck Stone floor, as I mentioned in my lastNewsletter contribution. We are also going to lay a

screed below the new floor as this will reduce the stepdown into the the church, and eliminate the one up to thechancel. It's sad that we won't be back in the church in time forChristmas, thus missing two now, but we should be backinto our building fairly early on in the New Year.

ST. MARY'S, MICHELMERSH ~ ST. ANDREW'S, TIMSBURYin the United Benefice of Braishfield

Day off Friday

The King is ComingWe spend a lot of time getting ready for things; work, exams, interviews, going out, getting married, retirement, Christmas! It’s important to make sure you are ready.

Jesus said we must make sure we’re ready for one great event: his Second Coming, when hereturns to earth. This isn’t some far-fetched fairy story; rather it’s a theme that runs through thewhole of the New Testament. This is what the season of ‘Advent’ is all about - the comings ofChrist; once as a baby in a manger then, at the end, as the King of Kings.

When he comes, Jesus said it would be unmistakable and inescapable. He said he will comeagain in person and it will be as evident as lightning lighting up the whole sky. All earth’spopulation will see; everyone will know he’s come.

It will be sudden & unexpected. Jesus told his followers that many will be taken completely bysurprise for they will be complacent and unprepared. It will be, he said, like a thief in the night thatcomes when you are not expecting.

This time he will come not as a helpless baby but a mature man; not just one star in the sky butwith hosts of angels in attendance; not in weakness but in power; not in humility but in glory; notin meekness but in majesty.

Jesus’ return will bring God’s plan for the world to a climax and conclusion. History is ‘His-story’. He will be acknowledged by all as LORD of LORDS and KING of KINGS. The world last sawhim crucified; now it will see him crowned. At last everyone will recognise that Jesus Christ is Lord.Nothing and no-one will be able to challenge his rule. He is coming to Judge the world. God willbe seen as perfectly just and all the injustices of history will be set right.

When Jesus returns he will put an end to sin, sorrow, sadness, sickness and decay. Evil, the deviland his demons will be destroyed. Death itself will be banished for ever. There will be a greatreunion with those who have gone before, who have died trusting in Jesus. We will be given newand perfect bodies in a renewed creation.

In the light of fact that Jesus is coming again as King and as Judge, there is absolutely nothingthat is more important in our life today than to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we areChristians, that we are trusting in Jesus for today and for the future. It’s not about pie in the skywhen you die, or hedging your bets for the future. God longs for us to have a relationship with himand to experience his amazing love now. When we have that assurance, then when Jesus returns,it will be like welcoming the greatest of all friends, with an unimaginably wonderful future in store.

MICHELMERSH AND TIMSBURY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETYIf you are an interested amateur or just aspiring gardenerwe would love to see you - with a friend if you like.We are coming up to the season of festivities and aChristmas Supper party is on our agenda of monthlymeetings where a speaker talks to us on matters ofinterest to gardeners. These are primarily socialoccasions that start at 7.30pm and finish at about9.00pm and are only slightly competitive when, three orfour times a year, we show our flowers or produce toeach other. We shall be holding the Christmas Party on Monday 14December 2015 (tickets will be £5.00 and includeentrance to the raffle). Those who would like to attendshould contact Kath Davis ([email protected]/tel. 01794 368771) or any other member of theCommittee whom they know. Our first talk this season was given by Thomas Stone ofthat well-known gardening family from Mottisfont - it'sobviously in the genes! He gave us an excellent slideshow and was most informative about the vast variety ofhardy geraniums that are now available and which onesare best to plant where and when. Unfortunately, onlytwo Members remembered to bring jugs of flowers that

evening so we did not have our usual Septembercompetition. We do endeavour to remind everyone ofthis event, but after the summer's break it's probably agood idea to check the Programme anyway. The October speaker was Dr Peter Shakespeare whogave a fascinating talk about the history of the apple andhow it arrived here from Asia. As well as an opportunityto taste several old English varieties of apple, we werealso given some invaluable tips about pruning andgrafting apple trees (remember M26 is therecommended rootstock). Following Peter's request togive a donation to a hospice of our choice (in lieu of hisfee), we selected the Voices for Hospices Concert heldrecently at Romsey Abbey in aid of the CountessMountbatten Hospice. Anyone who would like to gain experience of helping torun our regular Horticultural Shows or the Plant Saleshould contact Kath Davis (see details above). She willbe holding a meeting on Monday 26 October 2015 at7.30 in the Jubilee Hall Committee Room. TheCommittee appreciates all the volunteer help it can get!

Jane & John Chambers

This was performed by The Ophelia String Quartet andFlûtes Légères at St Marys’ Michelmersh on the 9th

October. We had a wonderful evening at the church listening to aninteresting and varied programme of music performed bythese two very experienced quartets of musicians. It would be difficult to pick out favourites as whether itwas a classical or a folk composition being played themusic flowed through the church and surrounded thelistener to totally envelop us in the moment. The church, decorated with ivy and candles, helped create anatmosphere worthy of the beautiful sounds we enjoyed. We are very privileged to have an acoustic quality in StMarys’ that lends itself to such occasions and it isexciting to have the opportunity to realise its potential

from time to time. Our Sunday hymn singing does notalways do it justice! We are indebted to Marguerite Johnson of FlûtesLégères who organised the ‘getting together’ of the twosets of musicians to such great effect. We hope towelcome them back next year.Once again we enjoyed an interval with a drink anddelicious nibbles donated by members of St Marys’congregation. The evening also resulted in sums of £628 afterexpenses which was divided between St Marys’ and‘Restored: Eating Disorder Services’ the performerscharity of choice. We hope to see you at our next concert.

PARISH COUNCILPLANNINGThe Council is consulted on all planning applications fordevelopments in the parish and reports to Test ValleyBorough Council, or Hampshire County Council (onapplications relating to minerals or waste), whodetermine the applications.

PLANNING APPLICATIONSThe Parish Council has reviewed the following planningapplications in the past two months:15/02044/FULLSSingle storey orangery to rearSite: Beech House, Manor Lane, TimsburyDecision: No objection15/01243/FULLSRetrospective - engineering works to alter ground levelsand provide retaining walls, and soft landscaping withinfront gardenRidgemount, Haccups Lane, MichelmershThe Parish Council expressed concerns about theseworks (already carried out without planning permission)because they considered that the formal landscapingscheme, including ‘solid’ gates at the drive entrance fromHaccups Lane, is out-of-character with its surroundingsin this rural lane, adjacent to the village ConservationArea. However, the Council agreed that new scheme hadclearly been constructed to a high standard and in theParish Council’s view is preferable to the previousgarden layout. Although an appropriate landscapingscheme had been approved by Test Valley BoroughCouncil during the construction of the house this wasnever completed and before the new garden wasconstructed the area in front of the house had anunfinished and unsightly appearance.Taking all factors into consideration the Parish Council, although critical of the scheme, decided not to object tothis application.Decision: No objection, subject to comments15/01848/FULLSErection of 3 four bedroom earth shelter dwellingsincluding bunds, solar panels, access and landscapingLand North, Stockbridge Road, TimsburyDecision: Objection, on the same grounds as previouslystated in correspondence ref: KH/170/May2015(including the site being in the countryside, adverseimpact on landscape).Street Trading ApplicationDaytime ‘burger van’ in A3057 lay-by, TimsburyG&J CateringThe applicant had been operating in the layby for severalyears and provided a useful service and there were noreported problems or complaints.Decision: No objection15/01762/FULLSTwo storey front, single storey front and single storey sideextensionsCroft House, Haccups Lane, MichelmershDecision: No objection

COMMUNITY ISSUES

NEW ROAD TELEPHONE BOXThe door to the telephone box is being repaired (byCouncillor John Rhodes) and will be rehung shortly. The box will then be repainted. Suggestions for practicaluses for our two telephone boxes would be welcomed.

JUBILEE HALL CAR PARKIn agreement with the Jubilee Hall Committee, theParish Council has applied to Test Valley BoroughCouncil for ‘Section 106’ funding to replace the Leylandiiconifer hedge between the Hall car park andMannyngham Way. The hedge is overgrown andcannot be successfully cut back. The proposal is toplant a new hedge of native species, including someevergreen shrubs, backing by a post-and-rail fence. This would be maintained at a height that would allow itto be trimmed easily but also to screen the car park fromMannyngham Way.

RECREATION GROUND CAR PARKThe Parish Council has applied for ‘Section 106’ moniesto fund the installation of reinforced matting to therecreation ground car parking area (adjacent to thesports pavilion). One section of the area wassuccessfully treated in 2014 but the remaining areacontinues to suffer damage after wet weather and inprevious years has been unusable in winter months.A3057 TREE PLANTINGThe Parish Council also applied for ‘Section 106’ moniesto help fund the planting of up to 20 trees along theverge which borders the A3057 and the cycle pathadjacent to Hunts Farm Recreation Ground.Unfortunately the application did not qualify for funding,as there is currently no Section 106 funds allocated toprojects classified as ‘Parkland’.

INTERVIEW WITH BETTY NUTLEYThe following is the fourth instalment of an interviewbetween Carolyn Jory, Ginny (Jory) Clover and BettyNutley, with a little memory help from Betty’s daughter JoMorgan.Betty, at 94, is the oldest village resident and has livedhere in Mesh Road all her life. This interview, conductedin January, was to capture Betty’s memories before theyare forgotten.

C: Then the children came along?

I had Jo before I was married. She lived here with myaunt before I met him (Ted). The surgeon operated on mebecause I was too small. He wanted her when she wasborn. She was born in Bournemouth. I said, no, I’d ratherkeep her.

J: As the bombs came through, you had to sit up in bedwith a tin Gerry pot on her head”.

B: That’s right, I’m glad you reminded me. I was put intoa mother’s and child’s job. And they took me toBoscombe. I had 5 children and they are all well.

C: They all grew up in this house. 2 up and 2 down, waterpump outside. Toilet was under the Yew tree. We didn’tknow any different.

B: There was nothing over there in the fields. To shop, wejust rode a bike into Romsey. There was also a deliveryman and fish man who came around. This is getting on abit – later. Stares’s and Pierce’s bakery used to comearound. Pierce’s was baker in Romsey. Old Ted used tosay ,“If they gives up I don’t know what we are going todo”. Because that was our 2 main shops. There was ayoung nipper from the baker who would come round witha van and our bread was brought to us.

There were no houses up there, just fields. Sheds.

There was the farm but apart from that that was it. DownManor Farm road that was just a little track down there.

Because, you see, I was only little, I didn’t go very far anddidn’t do anything. Or anything exciting with everythinggoing on here.

Summer activities, were there any? Was there a cinema?

Cinema! There was no cinema! Harvest Supper? No,Harvest supper. There wasn’t anything.

Rose Cottage was here. The Trihorns where there.

J: There was a plank we used to walk across. He playedthe organ in Romsey Abbey. Mrs Clare was there before.

C: Must have changed for you too, Jo. You must havefriends here still.

Jo doesn’t remember. Discusses Joyce Brown, who isabout 88, was Betty’s age/in the village then. She wasat Betty’s school.

B: “I remember going up Waterworks Road. Becausemy aunt lived up there. There are the 2 lots of houses.2 and 2. That was the Waterworks cottages and my andone of my aunts married old Freddie Rose that workedthere and they lived in that end cottage and JoyceBrown, I used to go down there because the kids, I wasold enough and I had a bike and I rode down there andI used to go up the road and play with all the rest of them.Joyce Brown (she was Joyce Morgan) was about thatbig, I think (small), and she came toddling up there fromsomewhere, somebody brought her in a pretty littledress. She might have been about 2. She was a bityounger than me. She had a pretty little dress on. I doremember that now, talking about Joyce Morgan.

J: Did they have Maypole dancing?

B: They didn’t have anything here. There was “the Rec”,the Recreation ground, behind the Jubilee Hall.

C: What went on there?

J: In 1952 we had races for the Queen’s Coronation. Iwon 2 blue glass tumblers. I still have them, for skippingand running.

B: I remember the Bear and Ragged Staff. I only wentthere when I was 21 because old Granny didn’t go downthere, I never went there, a kid on my own. There wereno little kids along here.

Someone took us down to the Staff. Wilf Gold used tobe the proprietor. He was from Kimbridge. Worked forHumberts. Humberts had Kimbridge then. He got thestaff, I don’t know how he got it, he ran it.

J: It was just a small place not like now with all theextensions. That big bungalow on the corner wasn’tthere, opposite the Staff. That was only allotment , likea little shack with a few sticks. There were 3 little blackshingle cottages opposite the Staff. There weren’t anytrees there, it was all lovely. There were no trees.

NEW ROAD ARTISTSThe Jubilee Hall was transformed in August into aprofessional looking Art Gallery with the 25th AnniversaryExhibition of New Road Artists. Most visitors wereimpressed with the set up of screens and lighting, whichwere arranged by Roy Brophy, husband of member Gill. Thanks Roy for all your hard work. The success of the exhibition was marred by theatrocious weather, which kept many people away. One ofthe bright spots however was a visit from Ann Goldsmith, who was the original tutor of the group. Although frail afterillness she made a long trip to visit us and was still full ofgood advice and observations.Visitors were full of praise for the quality and highstandard of the work on show.

This term we welcome Judith Parr-Eaton an ex ArtTeacher whose work is colourful and lively. We wish herwell in the group. The programme this term includes a talk by memberDorothy Holden on the influences that have formed herpainting style and philosophy, a workshop on Collagewith member Jackie Green, a short talk on the artistPaul Feiler by myself, a visit to the Group 7 exhibition atSalisbury and of course plenty of painting. On the lastday of term there will be a review of the term and ourpainting plus our usual Christmas lunch.Meanwhile back to the studio.
