Managers Message —by Anthony Chelena

September and

October were terrific

months at the Club.

Revenue was good as

Members were very

actively participating

at the restaurants and

playing golf & tennis. Most importantly,

we welcomed 10 new Members into

the Club in September and October. In

September our ladies combo tennis team

won 2nd place in the state tournament

in Hickory. And in October our men’s

golfing team blanked Etowah Valley CC

12-0 on the first day of competition to

easily win the Van Arsdale Cup.

The week I am writing this message has

been a unique week and it happens this

time every year. Every day this week I’ve

run into 4-5 Members who tell me their

car is packed and they are headed for

Florida in the next day or two. I mean, the

interstates to Florida must be packed this

week! Most all of these Florida residents

tell me they are planning to be back in NC

for Thanksgiving or Christmas. See you

soon. We’ll be up here still having fun!

We’ve noticed that the mail is definitely running slower than it used to. The

reason we know is because, after we mail

statements each month, more and more

Members are calling us to ask why we

didn’t receive their payment on time. It

is the mail. We post payments the day

we receive them. Charges are due on the

15th of each month and our accounting

software automatically adds, just like our

bank does to us, a finance charge to any

account that is not current after the last

day of the month. Even online banking

payments, which still arrive to us by mail,

are arriving later than usual. You can

look on your statement to see the day we

received your payment. We post payments

the same day we receive them.

People are always surprised to hear how

many employees we have at the Club.

In the summer when the pool is open

and the golf course is full of golfers and

mowers, we have up to 110 employees and

in the winter it falls to about 60. More

than half of our year round employees

have been with the Club for more than

five years. It’s like family. Thank you for

letting us serve you at your Club.

President’s Message —by Chris Burns

It is truly surprising

how many of our

Members volunteer

on the numerous

committees that make

our Club so vibrant.

Each September, as

our board welcomes new members, many

of our committee chairs are reassigned.

Below you will see this year’s chairs for our

standing committees:

Buildings and Grounds Henry Johnson

Bylaws Bill Sinclair

Finance Jimmy Chandler

Fitness/ Tennis Jim Wiley

Golf Debbie Rice

Membership Tom Cooper

Pool Les Boyd

On behalf of our board, thank you to all

those members who served on committees

last year as well as to those serving this

year. Your contributions of time and

talent are critical to our enjoyment of the

Club.

It’s hard to believe we are starting to

think about the holidays already! As we

approach the season I want to remind

you of an opportunity to participate in

the Club’s Holiday Fund for the Club

employees. This fund is entirely voluntary

and is distributed to the Club employees

just before Christmas. Your November

and December statements will contain an

envelope for you to indicate your election

to participate. It is a convenient way for

you to remember all the Club employees

with a holiday gift.

And speaking of holidays, it’s not too late

to book your holiday lunch or dinner

gathering for the Clubhouse. It’s always

one of the most festive places in town.

Until next month, I look forward to seeing

you around the Club.

Holiday Floral Design Demonstration & Lunch

Pam Hedstrom, owner and designer of the Flower Market, will be our teacher. Pam will demonstrate the magic of floral arranging. She has such a creative imagination she will inspire you to design a beautiful arrangement for yourself. You can see her arrangements in the Clubhouse each week, and now she will show us how it’s done. Make your reservation early. 692-2261

Golf News —by Ben Balentine

The Fall Member-Member Tournament played

on October 4th & 5th proved to be a tremendous

success with a field of 33 teams. The format for

the fall event was better ball net and gross for the

two days. On Saturday we had our first frost of the

season and it was cool and windy during play. Jim

Murray and Dr. Keith Maxwell had an outstanding weekend shooting

69-67 = 136 to prevail as the overall gross division Champions. Allen

Combs and Ardjan Morava took home the overall low net honors

firing 61- 62 for a total of 123 Congratulations to both teams for their

outstanding play.

The VanArsdale Cup was held on October 11th & 12th with first round

being played at Hendersonville. The Hendersonville team won all six

matches and took a 12-0 lead after the first round. Etowah came back

on Sunday with a score of 6 ½ - 5 ½. Hendersonville retained the cup

by a score of 17 ½ - 6 ½. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE HCC TEAM FOR THEIR GREAT PLAY!!

This also brought to a close a very successful tournament season.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s events. We will strive

to make the 2015 season even better and more enjoyable than 2014 by

adding a few new tournaments and also some different formats.

The leaf rule was put into effect on October 15th. This is a local rule to provide relief from fallen leaves in the wintertime. If a player is certain that their ball is lost in the leaves they may drop a ball as close to the point they believe the ball is lost, with no penalty.

Beginning November 1st, the golf operations will move to a winter time schedule. Tee Times will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the golf shop will open at 8:00 a.m. The shop will close at 6:00 p.m. or dark whichever is earlier. This schedule will continue until April 1st.

Over the past few weeks (end of September first of October) we have been monitoring the cart procedures on the golf course. There is a brown post with a yellow ring at the top on each hole near the cart path usually within 50 yards of the green. These posts are markers to let you know when to return to the cart path and remain there until you reach the next fairway. The most frequent misuse of carts is on hole 6, taking the cart left of the green to the path at 7, and hole 8, taking the cart to the left and behind the green. Also, when returning to the cart paths please go to the outside of the post NOT to the inside.

Thanksgiving Day BuffetWe will have all the holiday favorites from roasted turkey and dressing to prime ribs of beef, also a grand display of salads, ice sculptures, and assorted seasonal desserts. Bring the family and enjoy a great day. Make your reservations early because it always sells out. Call Emily or Jeanne Marie now at 692-2261.

SMGA —by Dick DuRose

The 2014 SMGA season is over. No more

Monday tournaments. It was outstanding for

many reasons. The weather was moderate

for the most part. We did not have excessive

rain. Craig kept the course in great shape.

The tournament chairmen, Dave Lambert

and Rich Robbins did an amazing job. And,

our membership was made up entirely by

nice guys who never complained.

Speaking of complaints, there is a suggestion

box on the bulletin board. If you have any

suggestions for improvement regarding any

of our SMGA activities, go ahead and let us

know. The SMGA Board would like to hear

any positive or negative comments. You can

sign your name or remain anonymous. It is

getting close to the time when we will begin

planning next year’s activities and so getting

in your two cents before everything has been

decided will be helpful.

Golf Tips —by Jay King

There are only 3 variables for driving distance:

clubhead speed, centeredness of contact, and

angle of attack. There are many preferences

on how you support these 3 distance laws, but

these 3 remain as how to hit longer shots. At

impact, the ball spends 1/2000 of a second

on the face and during that time the outcome of every shot is

determined. Golfers may comment that they are trying to get more

speed or hit it more center during their practice, but I rarely hear

someone say they are correcting their angle of attack.

Many players swing too steep (downward) and across with their

driver (over the top). This descending angle of attack will decrease

your total distances and cause unwanted sidespin/backspin on your

drives. The ball will balloon up into the air, and then fall out of the

sky with no distance. You may notice this if you have a tendency of

taking a small divot with your driver, or tee the ball very low (due to

your thinking that you hit your tee shots too high).

To get the most out of your tee shots, play ball position more

forward in your stance. Tee the ball so that at least half of the ball

is above the top half of your driver. Swing more around your body

so that your path into the ball is more from the inside as you extend

the driver level through impact. Studies have shown that maximum

distance is obtained when the driver has a level to slight upward

angle of attack through the ball. The optimal angle through impact

for a driver is 4 degrees up.

“Tee it high and let it fly!”

Grounds —by Craig DeJong

We’re getting closer to

the end of the calendar

year. November

is the month of

Thanksgiving and

a time of reflecting

on blessings. Our

department has

a lot to be thankful for as we come

out of another successful year. First

and foremost we have an awesome

staff! Many of our staff members have

numerous years of service to the Club,

and it reflects in their dedication to their

job. There are many other items to list,

in relation to our department and the

golf course, to be thankful for. But, none

of them could be achieved without a

dedicated staff who believes in producing

a great golfing experience each day.

The beginning of the month also marks

the beginning of our “off season.” Play

has gone down, frost delays are more

common, and turf growth has ceased.

Our staff now begins to refocus our

attention to projects around the course.

This does not mean that we will not be

maintaining the golf course. We will still

keep a close eye on course conditions,

especially if we are looking at a nice

stretch of weather.

November is a time for frequent frost

delays. Opening the course too early,

when frost is present, can do significant

damage. Each morning we contact the

Golf Shop by 8:00am regarding opening

the course. Fortunately, the driving range

tee and the putting greens are the first

areas to receive sunshine, burning off the

frost. We will open these areas prior to

the course allowing the membership an

opportunity to warm up.

GREAT SHOTSDon Gregory scored an eagle 3 on the 16th hole using a sand wedge from the fairway.

Guy Wellman made a hole in one on the 166 yard 4th hole using a 4 wood.

Jerry Schmode shot 74 to better his age by 7 strokes.

Lavinia Zimmermann chipped in an Eagle on Hole #16 from the fairway with a 6 hybrid during the WGA Club Championship. Not to be outdone, Allea Hawkins playing in the same group, matched Zimmermann’s Eagle, sinking a 13 ft putt on the same hole.

Winter Golf Tuesday/Thursday, November 4th

- March 31, 2015

This is not restricted to members of the WGA.

Format is gangsome

You MUST call the Pro Shop at least 24 hours

in advance to reserve one of the gangsome slots.

10:00 a.m. Monday for Tuesday play

10:00 a.m.Wednesday for Thursday play.

If you do not call ahead and arrive in the

morning and there are no open slots available,

you are on your own. We have four tee times,

the first at 10:04, the last at 10:28, that’s 16

players. Be in locker room by 9:30 for drawing

of teams.

If there are open tee times in our gangsome

slots on either morning, the Pro Shop can

assign these to other groups. This is only fair,

these are the ‘gangsome’ tee time rules set up by

the Pro Shop.

If you do not want to participate in the ‘game’,

you must go in the last group. If you don’t

want to play in the gangsome format, make

a group tee time before 10:04 or after the last

gangsome tee time 10:28.

WGA 9-Hole —by Dorothy Spall

We all had a delightful time at the Main Clubhouse for our final luncheon at the end of October.

A big thanks to all the Ladies who made our season such a success!

See the December Score for results from October Shoot.

WGA Special NoticeCALLING ALL LADY GOLFERSThe ladies’ regular golf season finished at the end of October for both 9 and 18- hole golfers. However, fall and winter are great times to enjoy our beautiful course and practice for the upcoming 2015 season. Our golf pros are available for lessons and in the spring they will be conducting golf clinics. Membership information for the 2015 season will be mailed in December. If you would like to be placed on our mailing list, please contact Caroly Hargis (9-hole president), Barbara Clay (18-hole president) or the Pro Shop. There are good times to be had by all in both groups and many of us have made wonderful new friends through this activity. The 9-hole ladies hope to encourage those who are new to golf as well as those who want some exercise but find 18 holes a bit much. Golfing can be a wonderful way to enjoy the beautiful North Carolina climate. Ladies’ winter golf starts in November (see article in this Score). Join us, meet some new friends and establish your handicap. We hope to be playing with you in 2015.
