November
2018 For All the Saints . . .
For all the saints who from their labors rest,
who thee by faith before the world confessed,
thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.
Alleluia! Alleluia! William W. How 1864
The lyrics of the hymn For All the Saints, written by William W. How
(Anglican Bishop of Wakefield) in 1864 offer a wonderful parallel to the arc
of our worship pattern in the month of November.
On the first Sunday of
November, we will cele-
brate the feast of All
Saints’ in which we give
thanks for the members
of the Body of Christ, the
saints who have gone
before us, and those in
the church today. While
the traditional date for
the Feast of All Saints’ is
November 1, it is a com-
mon practice (among
Lutheran churches) to
move the celebration to the first Sunday in November.
[Fun fact—the festival of Halloween comes in part from traditional
celebrations which took place on the eve of All Hallows’ Day (All
Saints’). In many countries the practice of a vigil on All Hallows’ Eve
continues today.]
(continued on page 2)
Page 2
(continued from page 1)
Within our Lutheran tradition the celebration of All Saints’ has come to include a celebration of
the entire membership of the Church—past, present and future. This in in part due to our
understanding of what constitutes a saint—a person made holy by God, as opposed to one
who is seen as being holy due to their own actions or merit. Indeed Martin Luther referred to
the nature of the Christian as “simul Justus et Peccator” (righteous and a sinner at the same
time).
All Saints’ is for us a celebration of the baptized,
both those who have gone before us as well as
our current sisters and brothers in Christ. At
Faith our celebration of All Saints’ will be
marked by a special remembrance of those who
have passed away in the previous year, as well
as those who have been washed in the waters
of baptism in the previous year. Our special
celebration of these saints, newly born and
recently departed, serves as a set of ‘book
ends’ which mark our lifelong journey as saints
within the church.
One week later, on November 11th, we will mark the celebration of Remembrance Day with a
moment of silence.
On November 25
th we will mark the end of the church year with a celebration of Christ the King
Sunday. This celebration looks forward to the fulfillment of God’s unfolding plan for all of creation and the coming sovereignty of Christ, King of Creation. Some of themes of Christ the King Sunday are found in the 6
th verse of For All the Saints:
But then there breaks a yet more glorious day: the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia! Alleluia!
May the God of all the saints, past, present and future, guard your comings and goings, and fill you with peace. Amen
Pastor Chris

New Sign for Faith Lutheran
For those of you that read last month’s newslet-
ter, you will be aware that Council has approved
the replacement of our current sign with an
electronic sign that can be programmed to let
the travelling public know about what is going on
at Faith Lutheran. The current schedule will see
the sign installed in early to mid-November. As
mentioned last month, the cost of the sign is
$40,000 which we are hoping will be raised
through donations from the congregation. I am
pleased to advise at this point that we have
received commitments of $26,827 toward the
total cost of the sign. Council would certainly
appreciate having the total cost of the sign
covered by donations before the sign gets
installed. Donations should be directed to the
church office and flagged “New Church Sign”.

FGI NEWS
Nov. 2018
Faith Gardens Inc. has had some fund raising successes over the last couple of months. Our Pancake Breakfast at Applebee's Oct. 13, raised $1005. Thanks to all who came out for breakfast and camaraderie. Also a big thanks to our volunteer servers. Without you we wouldn't be able to do this.
We also made application for a grant from The Winnipeg Foundation and were blessed to receive $10,000 towards the continued support of our ministry of Spiritual Care at River Park Gardens.
During the year, we also receive designated donations from many members of Faith, towards this important ministry of our congregation. All gifts are critical to our ongoing success.
Sometimes we as board members feel unsure about how we will be able to raise the funds needed to carry on this ministry in to the future, and then prayers are answered. We ask for your continued support through prayer, offerings and sharing with others why you support Spiritual Care.
If anyone has ideas for future fund raising initiatives, please share them with your FGI board members. We are always grateful for fresh approaches.

COUNCIL CORNER
Council met on October 9th with committee chairs as we now enter our annual budget planning. We look back on many challenges and changes we have had at Faith during the year 2018 and we must now look to the future to support our many outreach and missions as well as plan for any new challenges we may face in our own church. Please continue to share your thoughts and ideas with council as we need to be assured we are serving the needs of our congregation.
After service on the 21st a number of volunteers spent time learning how to operate our new sound system. Our hope is that you are noticing an improved audio experience during services. Let us know how we are doing.

Report on Giving
In an effort to keep the congregation better informed, Council has decided to report the giving received for the previous month and year to date. In assessing these numbers, please note that the budget for the month is determined by dividing our annual budget by 12. Council recognizes that giving patterns within the congregation mean that more money comes in during the latter half of the year than during the early and mid-parts of the year. Nevertheless, the budget number does provide a gauge on the state of our giving, particularly as we enter the last three months of the year. As of the end of September: Actual September Weekly Offering $24,884 Budget for September Weekly Offering $31,386 Percentage of Actual to Budget 79% Actual January to September Weekly Offering $203,752 Budget for January to September Weekly Offering $282,474 Percentage of Actual to Budget 72%
Council continues to encourage those who are not using pre-authorized giving
to seriously consider doing so.

Lutheran Book Clubs
Faith Lutheran Book Club Chapter 1 Zoe Whittall’s novel The Best Kind of People explores how the Woodbury family copes when the husband and father of the family is accused of the unthinkable? George Woodbury, an affable teacher and beloved husband and father, is arrested for sexual impropriety at a prestigious prep school. His wife, Joan, vaults between denial and rage as the community she loved turns on her. Their daughter, Sadie, a popular over-achieving high school senior, becomes a social pariah. Their son, Andrew, assists in his father’s defense, while wrestling with his own unhappy memories of his teen years. A local author tries to exploit their story, while an unlikely men’s rights activist attempts to get Sadie onside their cause. With George locked up, how do the members of his family pick up the pieces and keep living their lives? How do they defend someone they love while wrestling with the possibility of his guilt? With exquisite emotional precision, award-winning author Zoe Whittall explores issues of loyalty, truth, and the meaning of happiness through the lens of an all-American family on the brink of collapse.
Join Chapter 1 on Tuesday, November 27th @ 7:30 pm in the Blue Room at the church for an evening of fun, fellowship, food and a lively discussion of The Best Kind of People.

The book selection for November is The Home for Unwanted Girls by Joanna Goodman
In 1950s Quebec, French and English tolerate each other with precarious civility—much like Maggie Hughes’ parents. Maggie’s English-speaking father has ambitions for his daughter that don’t include marriage to the poor French boy on the next farm over. But Maggie’s heart is captured by Gabriel Phénix. When she becomes pregnant at fifteen, her parents force her to give baby Elodie up for adoption and get her life ‘back on track’.
Little Elodie is raised in Quebec’s impoverished orphanage system. It’s a precarious enough existence that takes a tragic turn when Elodie, along with thousands of other orphans in Quebec, is arbitrarily declared "mentally ill" as the result of a new law that provides more funding to psychiatric hospitals than it does to or-phanages.
Bright and determined, Elodie withstands abysmal treatment at the nuns’ hands, finally earning her freedom at seventeen, when she is thrust into an alien, often unnerving world.
Meanwhile, Maggie, married to a businessman eager to start a family, cannot forget the daughter she was forced to abandon, and a chance reconnection with Gabriel spurs a wrenching choice. As time passes, the sto-ries of Maggie and Elodie intertwine but never touch, until Maggie realizes she must take what she wants from life and go in search of her long-lost daughter, finally reclaiming the truth that has been denied them both.
We will meet off site on Thursday, November 22nd at 7:30 p.m. Please join us for a lively book discussion and Fellowship.

Sixth Book Bonanza
Thank you to the members of the congregation and Chapter 1 & 2 for once
again making the Book Bonanza such a success!
Choir News
Spirit Sing is an adult choir that rehearses Sundays at 8:45 from September to
May. The group typically sings once a month and special occasions. They are
welcoming back all returning choir members and would joyously welcome
newcomers. No experience is necessary. Just come with an open heart and a
willingness to learn and have fun.
Worship and Music is currently recruiting a new choir director. Keep tuned for
more details!
A Young Adult Choir may be coming your way soon! Over the past year,
several young adults have expressed interest in starting a new singing group.
This group would be geared to young adults in high school up to the 30
something age group.
They would share their musical talents with the congregation on Sunday
mornings or possibly at the new proposed service that will be focused on
meeting the needs of young adults (and the young at heart). A new director is
willing and waiting to see who is interested in starting rehearsals in the near
future.
For more information please contact Dawn Breckman at [email protected] or Sandra Brown Day at [email protected].
