PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

As November begins the staff and students will be busy preparing

for report cards and oral conferences. The teachers will be doing

formal assessments to confirm what they have been seeing from

each student in class. The teachers are assessing students daily in

all subject areas and continue to develop lesson plans and assign-

ments that challenge students and have them working to their full

potential. One of the assessments the teachers do is a reading rec-

ord. They meet with each child individually and determine reading

accuracy, fluency and comprehension on specific texts at various

levels. This allows them to focus on what each student does while

they read and what strategies the teacher should use while teach-

ing reading. Many teachers also complete daily informal versions

of this assessment. As the teachers meet with groups or individu-

als they quickly do a running record which allows them to see right

away what the students’ strengths are or what they should be

working on to progress in their reading. While the formal assess-

ments give a very detailed picture they are only one small piece of

the assessment and it is truly the daily assessment and observation

that drives instruction. The teachers spend a large part of their day

observing students, making notes and revising their teaching

based on student needs and interests at the time. We look forward

to seeing all the families at oral conferences on November 28th and

29th to share how much progress the students have made this year

already.

NEWS FROM THE GYM

- MR. JOEL SWEETLAND

Is it November already? The students of 6/7/8E are getting rea-

dy for a very busy month of November. In ELA, November sees

us starting our book club unit, Follow the Evidence, along with

reading and teaching to the Little Steps Nursery class. Math has

us exploring Number Sense (fractions) with visualizing and rea-

soning while we explore our Physical World in Social Studies.

We continue our study of the Solar System in Science as we pre-

pare for the first official Report Card and Oral Conferences at the

end of November.

The students in Grade 1/2 have been doing an inquiry on squash. We have a handful of

different types of squash in our class-room and students have become very curious about these interesting looking vegetables. This curiosity sparked “I wonder…” questions. Each student shared their wonderings with their peers and then added them to our Wonder wall. Our next step is looking into our wonder-ings and see which ones we can answer.

The new hardwood floor in the gym is beautiful and makes for much more comfortable gameplay.

With the volleyball regular season wrapping up, both the boys and girls teams are preparing for playoffs. Playoffs

will start the week of November 5th. The girls team will be challenging for the A-side and the boys will compete in

the B-side. Both teams have had successful seasons and have seen a marked improvement in skill and quality of

gameplay. Good luck in playoffs.

Thankfully the rain held off during the Grade 5/6 Soccer Day on October 9th and the students had a great day de-

spite the misty weather.

The Grade 6 Friendly Volleyball Tournament will take place on November 21st, with the boys at La Barriere Crossings School and the girls in Ste. Adolphe.

Another month has flown by! We’ve been busy working on some new themes and skills. In math we’ve

learned some new games and are working on place value, as well as continuing to practice reading

numbers in French. If you see any numbers somewhere, I

encourage you to ask your child to tell you what they are in

French. In science we have started our unit called “forces

that attract and repel”. We are currently discovering what

attracts magnets and what doesn’t. One of our focuses this

year is to really work on the students’ critical thinking

skills. We’ve been practicing stating our opinion or idea

then justifying it with several details. If your child tells you

an opinion, please ask them to explain why.

Finally, I would like to once again thank all of you for the amazing support you’ve shown myself and your children this month, be it through Drive Away Hunger, or donating pumpkins or carving tools.

October has shaped up to be another fun and busy month for 7/8 Immersion. It started with the “Drive away hunger” cam-paign and a goal to raise 600 lbs as a class. It ended with a sec-ond place win and a grand total of 919.8 lbs from just our class alone! Although we did not get the win… (congrats to M Parent and company) the students earned themselves a well deserved pizza and movie party.

Looking into November, we have a few exciting things happen-ing including the Seine River School Division debates where the grade 8 students will be competing against other students of their grade level from across the division! We will also be

starting to write and organize our theatre production for Festival Théâtre Jeunesse. Stay tuned!

Wow, what a fun filled month we had! We were lucky enough to have the Monach

Teacher Network of Canada come and do a fun and interactive presentation with

us. We had the opportunity to plant milkweed to help the butterflies. In addition,

an arborist stopped by to share her knowledge and helped us answer

our inquiry question “Why are plants important to our environment?”

The students had lots of questions and really enjoyed planting grass

with her. The students have also been engaged in our afternoon literacy

centers where we practice our reading and writing daily. Lastly, our class

has also been showing a large interest in our daily problem solving math

problems.

October is at an end. The class has shifted from social studies to science. We’re investi-gating forces that attract and repel and have started looking into the design process (which had been really fun so far, crawling on desks to escape the class… ask one of our students about it). In math, we’ve continued to build up addition/subtraction, and increasing/

decreasing patterns, with multiplication just around the corner. We’ve also been increasing the volume of writing in both French and in English. The focus is now on the pre-writing portion and in justifying an opinion (the why). “Would you rather” is actually a really great way to work on this… “Would you rather be a vampire or a werewolf? Why?” Give it a try at home. Ok… that’s it for now.

October ended on a great note for 5/6 Immersion. Our class and Mme Ramm’s grade 7/8 class joined

forces to host Halloween-themed activities in the gym. The students

worked hard to come up with and execute their plan and we hope it was en-

joyed by all. It was great to see the kids work together as a team toward a

common goal, and I am very proud of their effort!

Our geometry unit will be coming to a close next month. We studied the

calculation of perimeter and area in regular polygons and learned how to

use a protractor to measure angles. We learned about the electoral process

in Canada and were fortunate to have a visit from Robert-Falcon Ouellette,

former MP. We also participated in a class mascot election for our Buddies

in Grade 2 Immersion. Our study of the weather will soon travel beyond Earth’s atmosphere as we begin

our study of the Solar System.

We are just over halfway through our class novel, Out of My Mind. Students did a lot of writing in Octo-ber, including a persuasive essay as well as poetry. Next month, we are looking forward to a visit from Mme Doll who will help us work with pastels.

What a great month this has been in grade one! We adopted a tree, became leaf scientists, which led us to our new inquiry question; “why are plants important to our environ-ment?”. With this question in mind, we had a visit from the Monarch teacher network to teach us all about pollinators and plants that are important for our pollinators in our en-vironment. We also had a horticulturist/arborist come in to give us a mini lesson on seeds and how they grow. We are very excited to see where our questions will lead us!

It’s getting cold outside! It’s a good

thing we dress warm when we are

playing outside! This month, we

learned a lot about leaves and why

they change colours. We even did an

art project where we made realistic

looking leaves. Everyone is learning to

be much more independent now. Eve-

ry day I am hearing more and more

French in the room, it’s wonderful!

K/1/2 ENGLISH

Now that it’s cold outside, all the leaves have fallen. The children’s interest

has shifted to animals and what they do in the fall. The grade 1 and 2 are

working on a research project about forest animals and what they do in the

fall. The Kindergartens turned their sensory table into a forest full of ani-

mals. We are making a counting book together.

For the month of October our fall theme continued. We learned

about leaves and why they change colour in the fall, what colours

they turn and what shapes the leaves are. We made lots of art us-

ing leaves sticks pine cones and other things we collected. With

Halloween on their minds I brought in different pumpkins to in-

vestigate using our five senses to learn about them. We talked

about how and where they grow, we learned all the parts of a pumpkin and sorted

them, we also did an experiment to see the pumpkins float or sink.
