REVIEW

There is a diverse community in Louisville; a wide range of talented writers, artists and performers. From music to film, stage productions, gallery openings and fine art - there’s lots to be thankful for from living in our vibrant City.

Louisville Arts Review is thankful for your support this past year. More people have been reading and passing along our issues than ever before. Every month we get more requests for drop off locations. While encouraging, we have some ideas about how to impact the community with some long term goals.

Through these avenues - we desire to encourage and foster continued growth in the Arts for many generations.

2011 will be a big year for LAR. Join us in supporting our local artistic community. We are planning a double issue to celebrate our 1 year anniversary and taking December off so we will see you again in January. Enjoy your time this month with kith & kin.

GO ASK ALYSS; GO ASK HATTER...AND DISCOVER THE TRUTH OF

WONDERLAND...BY KENN PARKS

Virtually everyone has heard of the story of Alice in Wonderland. English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, created and published the book in 1865, under the pen name of Lewis Carroll. The original title of the fantasy novel was “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” introducing readers to wildly imaginative characters,

new lands and socially progressive symbolism that both thrilled and shocked readers of the day. Though intended to be released as a children’s book, it soon became evident that this adventure was for all whom would dare dive down into the rabbit hole and allow their imaginations to supplant their typically rational way of viewing the world.

Now, use your imagination and contemplate for a moment, that Wonderland actually exists. Forget everything you know about Alice in Wonderland and journey to a place where imagination is real, and an epic, cross-dimensional saga of murder, love, betrayal, revenge and an endless war to control imagination is the reality of Wonderland’s inhabitants.

In a trilogy by New York Times best selling author Frank Beddor, The Looking Glass Wars, the author unabashedly challenges the innocent world of tea parties, white rabbits, the Mad Hatter, rabbit holes and the curious little blonde girl we’ve come to know as Alice to reveal the truth behind Wonderland.

This December, the Alley Theater is bringing this hugely popular novel to the theater in the world’s first stage adaptation and multimedia production! Come meet the heroic, passionate, monstrous, vengeful and iconic denizens of this parallel world as they battle each other with swords, orb generators and imagination. Navigate the Crystal Continuum, venture into the Looking Glasses, slip each other the poisonous pink mushroom and beware of unseen danger all around you.

As the Looking Glass Wars website describes in detail, Alyss Heart, heir to the Wonderland throne, was forced to flee through

Alice Stone, another local artist, treats the viewer to wonderfully hand painted cut paper collages. From a distance the works look like paintings influenced by Swedish designers but on closer inspection the viewer will notice layers of cut paper shapes that make up the compositions.

Andrew Rosenbarger and Silvia Willkens are two other artists with work on the walls of Galerie Hertz. Rosenbarger’s abstract works are colorful and bright popping off of the white walls. The works are all equal in size and hung salon style creating geometric rectangles on the wall. What look like prints of tree bark are embedded in a fusion of colors making for a loud visual experience.

Willkens’ work is figurative using mostly soft and muted colors. The portraits by this German artist reflect a dark serene and dream like atmosphere. Many of the works reflect historical looking noble figures caught in a moment. The figures seem caught up in their thoughts revealing emotions through their eyes. By allowing oneself to be captivated by these simple paintings, one might feel a slight chill.

The afore mentioned artists can all be seen at Galerie Hertz in conjunction with the current exhibition, “One Man Group Show” by Tom Pfannerstill. The exhibition, looking somewhat

like a retrospective, houses all new work (created in 2010) by the artist. All of the artwork spans the styles and themes Pfannerstill is most closely connected with: Trompe l’oeil, 3D still lifes, Autobiographical head casts, and more.Pfannerstill’s exhibition will be up through December 31 so don’t miss your chance to have a one-of-a-kind visual art experience.

the Pool of Tears after a bloody palace coup staged by the murderous Redd shattered her world. Lost and alone in Victorian London, Alyss is befriended by an aspiring author to whom she tells the surreal, violent, heartbreaking story of her young life only to see it published

as the nonsensical children’s sojourn Alice in Wonderland. Alyss had trusted Lewis Carroll to tell the truth so that someone, somewhere, would find her and bring her back to Wonderland.Carroll had got it all wrong. He even misspelled her name! If not for the intrepid Hatter Madigan, a leading member of the Millinery (Wonderland’s elite security force) who after a 13 year search eventually

tracked Alyss to London, she may have become just another society woman sipping tea and sharing gossip, instead of returning to Wonderland to battle Redd for her rightful place as the Queen of Hearts.

This production promises to introduce you into a whole new theatrical experience, one in which you will be surrounded by and fully immersed into all the action, drama and of magic of Wonderland!

BY MARY MARGARET CARLTON

Every first Friday of the month Louisville art patrons grace the streets of downtown for the gallery hop. Galleries and studios lining East Market street open up and showcase new exhibitions. Many of these galleries would not be there today if it weren’t for the actions of Billy Hertz and Tom Schnepf of Galerie Hertz. These two men had a vision. They invested in an old building on East Market Street, opening up a gallery, and encouraged others to do the same. Now, years later, galleries and businesses have moved downtown and set up an area dedicated to visual arts and local products.

Galerie Hertz not only stemmed an art movement downtown, they have continued to move their gallery, providing visual art exposure to new locations throughout Louisville including their current residence at 1253 South Preston Street in the Shelby Park neighborhood.

When approaching Galerie Hertz on Preston Street, one is greeted by a giant orange

building and sculpture garden. Plants and outdoor art create a unique urban oasis in the midst of a run down part of town. The fun doesn’t stop there! Galeire Hertz constantly supplies one-of-a-kind exhibitions to Louisville citizens with found object sculptures, snow globes, oil paintings, donuts, flamingoes… the list goes on.

Every exhibition at Galerie Hertz fills a new niche in Louisville’s art scene. From Tom Pfannerstills’ giant beer cans and life size donut sculptures to Al Gorman’s Styrofoam stick animals from Falls of the Ohio debris, visitors and patrons are treated to a visual carnival of original art. The last exhibition of paintings by Emily Church brought new life to the medium. Church’s paintings documented her time spent in Slovenia. Bare tree and forest landscapes came to life through mustard yellows and army greens. Her accents of red and blue beautifully highlighted scenes of nature and brought the viewer to a peaceful state. Exhibitions at Galerie Hertz often include multiple artists.
