Paolo "Apollo" Negri, COBOLEchoes of Tangerine Dream, Lalo Schifrin, Deep Purple, John Barry, Jean-Michel Jarre, Italian Cinema, GeneKrupa, 70’s Library Music, Herbie Hancock are but a few of the memories COBOL will evoke, but it’s muchmore than that. COBOL is the final part of an epic trilogy that begins with the youth’s ambition of A BiggerTomorrow (2007), expands with the master’s control of The Great Anything (2010), and evolves into the artist’sunfiltered vision: a perfectly synthesized elixir of Lost Continent meets Dirty Harry meets Futureworld.

Kilborn Alley, FourYou could say that Kilborn Alley are bludgeoning musical boundaries, but it never occurred to them such bound-aries exist. You’ll hear snippets of the Delta, Chicago, and deep blues, as well as hard funk and sweat-soakedshuffles over the course of this record or at one of their shows. But Kilborn Alley caravan doesn’t take you onthat musical journey via the direct route. They prefer the more raucous journey found on the backstreets and dirtroads, the kind of adventure that comes from a lifetime commitment to ignoring the rules. 11 great new originaltunes round out this fourth Blue Bella Records outing from one of the best blues bands on the scene today.

Nick Moss, Here I AmNick Moss follows his most critically and commercially successful album to date (Privileged) with the release ofHere I Am, a record already drawing raves from peers and mentors like renowned bluesman Jimmy Thackery, whohas praised this new set for “pushing the evolution of his music” with tunes that are “genuine and intense.” Mosshas given guitar lovers plenty to sink their teeth into with extended songs and solos, but there’s more to Here I Amthan just great lead playing. Moss and his band again use a foundation of blues, rock, and roots as startingpoint, but take new and unexpected turns on these tracks. These 10 new originals combine to create themost diverse album of his career as he pushes his sound, songwriting, and lead guitar work further thanever before.

Doomtree, No KingsNo Kings is the second all-crew release from the Doomtree collective, the prolific pack of Minnesota musicians knownfor their explosive live shows, ferociously DIY ethic, and blatant disregard for the conventions of their genre. All sevenmembers of Doomtree have built solo careers as rappers, producers, or DJs. (Roster cheat sheet: P.O.S, Dessa,Sims, Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan, Lazerbeak, Paper Tiger). Doomtree has earned a reputation for aggressive, innovative production that spans genre and era-borrowing from punk, classical, obscure rock, experimental, andforeign styles. The title, No Kings, is a call for both rebellion and respect - obey no kings, seek no thrones. Trueto their grassroots history to date, Doomtree will tour hard in support of the album. There are no kings in Minneapolisand Doomtree continues their ascent the same way they began: one city, one club, one show at a time.

The Green Seed, Crack Kills b/w PreservationDespite having shared the stage with Raekwon and members of Jurassic 5, The Green Seed are the greatestSouthern Hip Hop act you’ve never heard of. The Green Seed (emcees R-Tist and C.O.M.P.L.E.T. and DJ FX)have been working individually and as a collective for the better part of a decade. “Crack Kills” is the perfectintroduction The Green Seed’s clever aplomb. An anti-consumerist jam that contemplates the importance of theindividual despite how they spend their money, “Crack Kills” has already found love online due to an award-winning video directed by Sugar Tooth. Recently re-mastered by Paul Logus (Mary J. Blige, Puff Daddy,The Great Book of John) the track has a fresh bump and shine that will rattle both your trunk and mind.Includes download.

Beaten by Them, People Start ListeningBeaten by Them is a multi-national quintet consisting of guitarist Andrew Harris, guitarist and keyboardist MaxMcCormick, cellist Boima Tucker, bassist Spencer Murray and drummer Jeff Ardziejewski. The group has set theircreative ambition to write and perform rock music that transcends stylistic barriers. While bearing somesonic similarity to the previous release Invisible Origins (tribal drums, synthesizers and earthshaking bass, etc),it isn’t a stretch to describe People Start Listening as an ambient record. Listening to this EP feels somewhatakin to watching a very weird and wonderful movie. It could be Beaten by Them’s most accessible record yet. And, as is usual with these guys, the sound is top notch. People Start Listening should appeal to fans ofprogressive or experimental rock music, indeed any rock fan who has lost their appetite for the bland andunimaginative fare that is being served up these days.

The Grenadines, Shake b/w ColorblindBorn equally of bright lights and seedy charm, The Grenadines might be Birmingham’s sexiest band. Fronted byhusband and wife team Michael and Lauren Shackelford and thrust into widescreen by guitarist David Swatzelland bassist Jesse Phillips, The Grenadines have been making a name for themselves in underground circlesthanks to both a sumptuous live show and praise from producers Andy Lemaster (Bright Eyes, Now It’sOverhead) and Spoon’s Jim Eno - both of whom have produced tracks for the band. “Shake” was recorded byJeffery Cain (Remy Zero, The Great Book of John, Isidore). Ed Hale and The Transcendence, All Your Heroes Become VillainsDuring the nine years since their genre-defying breakout debut, Rise and Shine, Ed Hale and The Transcendencehave been musical shape-shifters, willing to assume whatever form and go in whatever direction their musicdemands. On their latest release, their fourth album, All Your Heroes Become Villains, they harness the best oftheir previous efforts and multiply it by a gazillion. It was the result of a long, grueling recording process, appropriate for an album as equally accessible as it is complex and eclectic. Haunting melodies, rock-Godguitar riffs, rhythmic adventurousness, bold sonic experimentation, inspired songwriting and Ed Hale’simpassioned vocals create a highly memorable experience for the listener that could easily be called aconcept album.

Ex Norwegian, SketchEx Norwegian burst onto the indie rock world stage like a storm and has been on the brink of redefining whatindie rock means ever since. Their sound was catchy, unpredictable and addictive; and entirely free of pretensionor self aggrandizing pathos. Their sophomore release, Sketch, accomplishes the impossible: it improves some-thing that sounded incapable of needing improvement. Instantly recognizable and yet full of sonic surprises, theband’s second album is pure and powerful indie pop-rock ear candy that leaves you breathless, scratchingyour head, and wondering what just happened, as if the band is just getting started and at any minute is boundto blow the roof off.

The Loom, TeethTeeth: the part of you that outlast you longest once you’re gone; that hold a record of what you’ve done with yourtime, tribute or rebuke. In comparison to their longevity, time for the rest of you is short. So, then what to do withthat time? For the members of Brooklyn five-piece, The Loom, the answer to this question is the reason that theychoose to play music together in the first place - the simple search for joy. It’s a concern that both far outdates, and is reflected in, the searching folk, intricate percussion, and psych-influenced dissonance andatmospherics that they love and wind into their music. But Teeth, their debut, is not all joyful. Like the musicthat inspires them, it focuses more closely on the myriad hurdles that ensnare us along the way.

Preston Lovinggood, Duncan b/w No BabyPreston Lovinggood was the driving force behind Wild Sweet Orange - a powerful and profoundly literateindie-rock combo from Birmingham sorely missed by a growing cult of fans. After WSO broke up, Lovinggoodthought he’d quit music for good; fortunately, Preston found music once more. Or did it find him? Regardless,Lovinggood is in the process of recording a new album of original material. The A-side is an amazing andbeautiful cover of Paul Simon’s “Duncan” - a song that could have been written especially for Lovinggood withan indelible atmosphere, a perfect vocal and a driving rhythm, “Duncan” is one of those rare covers that is asgood (if not better) than the original. The flipside, “No Baby,” is a vaguely-blusey Lovinggood original that flowssmooth and warm.

Shirk Circus, This Band Will Destroy Your LifeAmidst a pile of empty chococcino bottles and the blaring background sound of the Descendents’ “I Don’t WantTo Grow Up”, Shirk Circus was spawned in January 1991. The band released two stellar albums on the greatBar/None label, and then imploded, another victim of the 1990s indie rock boom. Rumors of a third, unreleasedalbum persisted, but were never confirmed. Finally completed in 2007, this is that third album. Following theuntimely death of singer/guitarist Josh Silverman in February of 2011, the album art was compiled by hisfriends and family for release - finally, after more than a decade.

The 65’s, Strike Hard!A 1974 Time magazine article, entitled “Return of a Supergroup,” quipped that the supergroup was a “potent butshort-lived rock phenomenon” which was an “amalgam formed by the talented malcontents of other bands.”These talented malcontents come with a punk rock pedigree (the band features alumni from the likes of ElectricFrankenstein, Shirk Circus and Puggle), but are also accustomed to playing unplugged in coffee shops. The result is a blend of gritty punk-tinged rock with sophisticated, literate pop - and a brand-new band withone of the more exciting debuts to come out of the area in recent memory.

Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun, WildfireFolks say Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun occupy a strange land...a territory full of noisy chaos that dancesaround many perfectly manicured landscapes. Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun is about the collaborative. It’s about the connections between sound and people. It’s about the heart and the head. It’s for mistakes andtriumphs, and against arrogance and underconfidence. A band of four. 2 girls. 2 boys. Noisy. Dancy. Loud.Sincere. Sweaty. Loveable. Hardworking. A real good time. Touring full-time since August ’09. Their dwellingsare in Atlanta, GA, but they call the East Coast home. Wildfire is their first full-length (though followingthree acclaimed self-released EPs), an indie-pop masterpiece of dichotomy: heights and depths, waves andcrescendoes, synths and breathy vocals, dancy rhythms and dark themes.

The Trophy Fire, Modern HeartsSan Francisco trio, The Trophy Fire return with a brand new album, Modern Hearts. Recorded in Fremont andOakland during breaks between two national tours with Dredg, the album is broadly dynamic and fluid, as theband continues their tradition of powerful up tempo guitar and synth driven songs alongside much moredelicate and intimate tracks. While repeatedly criss crossing America, singer Ben Flanagan finished writingthe lyrics for the album; lyrics that speak deeply, poignantly and emotively about the pressures, absurdity andbeauty of the zeitgeist of our modern state and the challenges and the hopes of living in modern culture. The Trophy Fire are poised to head back out on the road all over again throughout fall into spring andsummer 2012.

Mario Adnet, More Jobim JazzThe second volume of guitarist Mario Adnet’s tribute to the music of the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobimcontinues to explore the jazz soul of Brazilian music with the same knack for innovative arrangement thatresulted in such accolades for that 2007 release as “...this CD has all the elements of a winner. Adnet capturesin it the true spirit of the Bossa Nova movement.” (Latin Jazz Network). Throughout the CD’s thirteen selections,Adnet again emphasizes brass arrangements, often including the contributions of the renowned Braziliantrombone player Vittor Santos, as well as a variety of trumpeters, flutists, tenor, alto and baritone saxophonists, and even French horn players to enhance the work of a central jazz ensemble. It was while recording More JobimJazz that Adnet fully grasped the profound influence that Gerry Mulligan’s 1953 recording, Tentet and Quartet, also had on Jobim – an influence which is also clearly evident on this brilliant homage.
