NOVEMBER NEWS FOR THE PARENTS OF KINDERING CHILDREN

SIBSHOPS

Sibshops are action-packed workshops in which participants meet other siblings of children with a variety of special needs, and are encouraged to share about the challenges and joys of having a brother or sister with a disability while having fun. They are a celebration of the special relationship and many contributions that siblings of children with special needs make, and are based on the Children’s Hospital program model designed by Don Meyer (www.siblingsupport.org).

Each Sibshop mixes information and discussion activities with new games, active play, and art projects! Dinner and dessert are also provided. To learn more about Sibshops at Kindering, visit www.Kindering.org/sibshops.

BABY STEPS

Have you wished you could meet other parents of infants/toddlers with special needs? Have you wondered where you could take your baby to experience socialization, play, and also have adult contact? Would you like new play ideas and songs?

If you answered yes to any of the questions, then Baby Steps may be for you!

Baby Steps is a parent/infant class that focuses on connection, play, support, and building relationships. In this class, the joys and challenges of raising a child with special needs will be shared, celebrated, and supported. Baby Steps is the first of many beginnings.

If interested, contact your family resource coordinator for more information.

NOVEMBER FAMILY NEWSLETTER

FATHERS NETWORK The Washington State Fathers Network is an important piece of the support that Kindering provides to families. It provides opportunities for dads to meet in dad only settings, organizes social gatherings for families, provides resources and advocates for dads and their families. Over the past few years attendance at the chapter meetings in Bellevue and Bothell have greatly diminished. For that reason, the scheduling of monthly meetings in those two locations has stopped, effective immediately. At this time, it is expected that all other Network planned gatherings will continue (e.g. other chapter meetings, the annual conference, campout and pancake breakfast) with the possibility that additional events may be added. Louis Mendoza will continue to be a resource to any dad looking for information or a connection to other dads. In place of the Bellevue and Bothell meetings some dads have expressed an interest in organizing informal social gatherings. If you would like to be connected to this group please contact Louis at 425.653.4286 or [email protected].

UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

BEING A PARENT OF A CHILD WITH

SPECIAL NEEDS

Moms and dads often discover raising a child with special needs has significant challenges. It’s natural for parents to have different perspectives on family issues, as moms and dads contribute different strengths to their families. Unexpected Journey helps participants understand this situation and many others in a one-day structured discussion exploring important issues a family predictably experiences when having a child with special needs. In a safe, flexible, and fun environment, we’ll learn from our challenges and appreciate the joys of raising kids with special needs. Topics include: coping with grief and stress, gaining family resilience, and nurturing the relationship that you have as a couple.

WELCOME

NEW STAFF

Hi! My name is Chanel Richards and I am a new Speech-Language pathologist at Kindering. I grew up in Indianapolis, IN and earned my bachelor’s and master’s degree from Ball State

University (Muncie, IN) in Speech and Language Pathology. After graduating, I worked in two different school settings for 3 years in Indianapolis and Cincinnati, OH. During my time working in the school setting, I enjoyed working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, language disorders, and articulation disorders. I love working with children and families and fostering the development of communication. In my free time I enjoy cycling, reading, hiking, yoga, spending time with my friends, and new adventures.

ILLNESS EXCLUSION AND

INFECTIOUS DISEASE

POLICY Kindering is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all children, staff and other volunteers of the agency. We view parents as our partners in promoting the safety and health of others by preventing the spread of communicable disease. To that end, we consider the advice of the King County Health Department . Please take a minute to review the entire policy located in your parent handbook. Thanks for your continued support in the is area!

My name is Esther and I am happy to be returning to Kindering as an Occupational Therapist! I previously worked here in 2008-2009. I’ve worked predominantly with pediatric populations in California and Washington states, including early intervention, clinic, and school-based settings.

I graduated from the University of Southern California with a Master’s in Occupational Therapy. My professional areas of interest include sensory processing and feeding. I love helping children learn and grow! Outside of work I enjoy spending time with family and friends, peacefully enjoying a warm of cup of coffee/tea, and taking walks.

We are pleased to introduce Marcee Merriam as the new Family Resource and Autism Insurance Navigator (aka Autism Navigator) to the Kindering Team. Marcee is "the proud mother of 3 children including my 21 year old son with autism. I don't know where he would be if he didn't have early

intervention!". As a past Interagency Council Parent Co-Chair in Snohomish County, Marcee "can navigate the 'alphabet soup' and help translate it for families." Marcee has also been in the medical insurance business for well over a decade and brings a wealth of knowledge about insurance to Kindering and to our families. She feels honored to help families understand their medical insurance and feels satisfied knowing she gave them the information that helped them make a good choice for their family. She states "seeing the results of Kindering for 20 years and now to get to be a part is so exciting!"
