Dear Faithful Members of the Good Shepherd Family:

As we begin to prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, it is the right time to count our many blessings. In preparing for our semiannual congrega-tional business meeting I spent a good deal of time reflecting on our first year together. We have so much to rejoice about! Below you will find the remarks that I shared at our congregational meeting. Perhaps my shar-ing will encourage you to set some time apart to reflect upon the last year and create your own list. If you do, please share it with me and other members of our church family. Sharing our thanks-givings is both inspirational and contagious!

I would like to begin my remarks by thanking God and each of you for the privilege to serve as your pastor. I am so grateful for your openness to explore new ministry ideas and for the faithful giving of your time, talents and treas-ures. I would also like to thank you for your kindness to my wife, Lisa, and our sons, Lars and Luke. Dear Parents, Many of you have expressed an interest in beginning a children’s choir at Good Shepherd. This choir would be for all chil-dren from pre-school through confirmation age. Teresa Ratkowski has a BA in Early Childhood Music Education and plans to implement a choir program which will be an enriching experience for your child. The children will not only learn age-appropriate songs and sing in church, but they will also gain a basic of knowledge of music which will be enhanced by using hand bells and rhythm instruments to make choir more enjoyable. Teresa requires that a parent accompany any child who is under the age of five in order to ensure that the rehearsals go smoothly. In order to begin, please give us your feedback regarding rehearsal times. Each choir rehearsal will last for one hour. Please consider which times would be the most convenient for your child to attend choir rehearsals by filling out the form below and returning it to the church office by November 15. If you feel that your family cannot commit to a weekly choir rehearsal, please feel free to comment below and suggest an alternate schedule, such as two times per month, etc. All comments and suggestions are appreciated!

Following is a reprint a letter that Pastor Eric wrote to the School Families last year that he would like to share with all families this year to remind us of the importance of All Saints’ Day. Dear Friends: The fall television classic, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, produced by the Peanuts comic strip creator, Charles M. Schulz will turn 44 years old this autumn. The story is set during the days surrounding Halloween and deals with themes of faith, disappointment, loyalty, friendship, and hope. One of the gang, Linus van Pelt, is convinced that The Great Pumpkin will appear on Halloween night to re-store all that is broken in the world. He sits vigil in a field awaiting the supernatu-ral gourd’s arrival, and is joined by Sally Brown who is enamored by Linus’ faith. They miss trick-o-treating and a Halloween party. The viewer can’t help but admire Linus for his faith, but at the same time feel sad that he and Sally missed out on some childhood fun. Sud-denly Linus sees a shadow and believes it to be The Great Pumpkin, only to quickly discover that it is Snoopy’s shadow. Sally’s faith in Linus and the Great Pumpkin is shat-tered and she blames Linus for making her miss out on all the fun. She even threat-ens to sue Linus! Linus, for his part, remains in the field alone, until his sister Lucy who had ridiculed him earlier for his foolish belief driven behavior wakes at 4:00 a.m. to discover that Linus is not in bed. She then goes to the field and carries the shivering Linus home and lovingly tucks him in. During the course of our lives, we often miss out on important and joyful events for different reasons. We can easily empathize with Sally who is frustrated, sad and even mad. One of the hardest situations for us to live with is death and the missing of a loved one. Grief is never good. Before Halloween became a day of childhood fun, it was a time of preparation for sacred remembrance. All Saint’s Eve or All Hallows Eve was a time to remember the Saints who have died and who are now at rest with God. The day after Halloween is All Saints Day and is still marked and celebrated as a Feast Day in many Christian Churches. Here at Good Shepherd, we will be celebrating All Saints Day at both our Satur-day evening mass at 5:30 on November 5th and Sunday November 6th at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00am. It is a time that we give thanks to God for all of our departed loved ones and for the knowledge that they are in God’s eternal keeping. You will have the opportunity to light a candle to remember your loved one and as a symbol of their continued life with all the saints in light with Christ. This is a wonderful way to remember as a family, with your larger faith family here at Good Shepherd. It is my earnest prayer that God would continue to heal the pain of separation and loss that you may carry with you each day. Please know that Good Shepherd cares about you and your family and we are here for you. Please consider joining us for worship to mark All Saints Day and if you need any additional information or would like to take some time to discuss any particular loss, I am always available. Love never dies,

Pastor Eric

Our Stewardship Team wishes to extend many thanks to Reverend Dr. Jonathan Linman for his pres-entation at the adult education on Reformation Sun-day.

To kick off Our Faith in Action cam-paign for 2012 please bring your gifts (pledge cards) to the Lord on Christ the King Sunday-November 20, 2011.

"God prospers us not to raise our standard of living, but our standard of giving."

The first part of our stewardship campaign will focus on treasures. It is a time for us to challenge ourselves to free up more of the financial resources that God entrusts to us and to pledge those resources in God’s service. On November 20th, Christ the King Sunday, we are all invited to bring our pledge cards and place them into the offering plate as we come up to the rail to receive Holy Communion. What a blessing it is to have the opportunities to participate actively in mis-sion and ministry and to thank God for the freedom we have in Christ Jesus our Lord!

Thank you for your faithfulness and action!

In the book of Genesis, God calls upon us to be good stewards of the earth. In the interest of being stewards of

the earth and our finances, beginning with the January issue of our newsletter, we will be mailing only to those people who are out of state and/or contacted us and to those who are homebound and unable to come to church. A supply will be kept in the church for congregants to

pick up, and all others will be e-mail and posted on our website. As always, we would like your e-mail address. Please drop us an e-mail at [email protected]. Thank you!

Please e-mail all articles

Please…. Please… Please….don’t keep your meeting dates a secret. Please send all information to the church office at [email protected] so Maureen can ensure that it appears on the weekly fridge notes and monthly calendar. This is especially important when meet-ings or dates need to be rescheduled. Please remember that all committees are scheduled to meet on a regular basis on the second Monday of each month in order to keep open the lines of communication and information sharing.

Prepared especially for LCC Association Congregations & Schools

Caring for a child who has been diagnosed

with a chronic illness is one of the most difficult

tasks a parent can face. It affects each member of

the family differently. Caregiver burnout and

stresses on family relationships can be overwhelm-

ing. Using active coping strategies can decrease

stress and improve the psychological health of

every member of the household. Families that

seem to handle this successfully are those who

work together as a team and face the responsibili-

ties of managing the illness together. The follow-

ing suggestions may be of assistance to families in

coping with a child’s chronic illness.

Educate yourself about your child's disease.

Do not be afraid to learn as much as possible

about your child's illness. Research the illness and

ask questions of your child's doctor until you fully

understand all aspects of the disease. As a parent,

you need to have a good understanding of the dis-

ease, not only to make important treatment deci-

sions, but also to enable you to help your child

cope with the illness.

Help your child deal with his or her feelings

about the illness. It can be difficult to predict

how a child will react to the knowledge that he or

she has a chronic illness. Parents should make an

effort to help their chronically ill child deal with any

emotional reactions he or she might have. Provid-

ing support, listening to the child, and discussing

your own emotions can increase the child’s ability

to voice feelings openly and to better cope with the

illness.

Don't be afraid to discipline. Many parents are

reluctant to set limits with their chronically ill child.

However, just like any other child, the chronically

ill child needs discipline. Discipline provides chil-

dren with structure and security, which is very re-

assuring to every child. Adequate discipline helps

children learn to control their own behavior, too.

Remember your other children. Just as you

and your chronically ill child are experiencing dif-

ferent emotions, so are your other children. Your

children may experience jealousy, anger and de-

pression. Parents need to provide time and energy

to other children in the family.

Understand your own emotions. A child’s

chronic illness changes future plans. Some par-

ents feel overwhelmed, sad, disappointed, and

frustrated. It is normal to want to grieve the loss

of the life that you wished for your child.

Parents must take care of themselves in or-

der to be an effective caregiver and parent.

The support we find and the tools we use are es-

sential in order for the entire family to live a full

life. We need to take the time to recharge so that

we are able to care for our family in an effective

way.
