ATHENA Announcement
Congratulations to this year’s ATHENA Award Recipient, Mary Jo Phares. Mary Jo is originally from Muncie; however, she moved to Shelbyville as a young child and considers Shelbyville her home. She is a graduate of Shelbyville High School. She and her husband, Dave, were married in 1968 and have 2 sons: David (wife, Michelle) Phares and Val (wife, Alicia) Phares. Mary Jo and Dave have wonderful grandkids: Kaitlyn, Tanner, Gage, Evan, and Cloe. She has two sisters: Linda Fitzgerald and Georgia Inabnitt. She also has two brothers: Jerry Stewart and John Flora. Without the support of her family, she would not be where she is today.
Mary Jo wanted to be a dancer, even appearing on a TV dance show in the late 1960s. However, her career did not follow that path. Mary Jo has always worked in the public sector. She was hired as a Meter Maid in 1971 for the city of Shelbyville and was later transferred to the communications department. In 1981, Mary Jo became the first woman police officer in Shelbyville. During her career, she was honored to be named Police Officer of the Year by the Veteran of Foreign Wars. She has received many other awards throughout her career. She also was the first D.A.R.E. Community Relations officer. She retired from D.A.R.E. in 2001 to become the 1st Female Court Security Officer. She is the past president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #84. During her time as an officer, she also assisted with the Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) throughout the state of Indiana.
Mary Jo is currently serving in her second term as Shelby County Recorder. In October 2013, she was awarded the Outstanding Recorder Award by the Association of Indiana Counties. This award recognizes her contributions made to county government throughout her years of public service. She has taken the initiative to organize, preserve, and maintain vital documents of Shelby County Residents. She has spent many hours of her own time to attend meetings to educate the members of various organizations about the purpose and importance of recording documents. Through new sources of preservation of documents, Mary Jo and her staff, Sara Plunkett and Debby Crafton, are working on bringing the Shelby County Recorders office into the 21st century. Her sons also nominated her for the Hoosier Shining Star Award. After being chosen for the award, she had the honor of riding in the Indianapolis 500 Parade and throwing out the first pitch at an Indianapolis Indians game.
Mary Jo has been very involved in the community for several years. Her volunteer activities, both in the past and currently, are many. They include: the Advisory board for Shelby Senior Services; Salvation Army; President of the Indiana Recorders; and helping with the task of getting county records stored in a better way. She also enjoys helping serve when needed at Occasions Banquet Hall as well as helping to assist families at Freeman Family Funeral Home. She was also a volunteer for Superbowl XLVI in Indianapolis.

The ATHENA Leadership Award® is presented to a woman ---or man--- who is honored for professional excellence, community service and for actively assisting women in their attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills.
Since the program’s inception in 1982, nearly 6,000 exemplary leaders in over 500 communities have received the prestigious ATHENA Award in the United States, Bermuda, Canada, China, Greece, India, Russia, Unite Arab Emirates and United Kingdom. By honoring exceptional leaders, the ATHENA Leadership Award® Program seeks to inspire others to achieve excellence in their professional and personal lives.
The ATHENA Leadership Award® is presented annually by chambers of commerce, women’s organizations and universities. The award is established through local host organizations in partnership with ATHENA International’s national underwriters, local businesses and individual sponsors.
Nominations are solicited and an ATHENA sculpture is awarded to an individual in the community who meets specific criteria (listed at the top right).

My name is Susan Lowe. My family, employees, coworkers or friends would describe me as having a good sense of humor, a desire to help seniors and that I enjoy networking and meeting new people.
I’m currently the General Manager for Home Instead Senior Care and I have worked in the senior health care industry for over 23 years. I’ve done billing of Medicare and Medicaid in several nursing facilities. I’ve helped hundreds of adult children place loved ones in facilities for rehabilitation. I’ve opened three assisted living communities; marketing them from dirt to final product. I currently get the privilege to help seniors stay in their homes by offering bonded and trained caregivers to assist with daily activities, such as meal preparation, companionship, incidental transportation to appointments and personal care.
To say that I have a desire to help seniors may be an understatement! I would describe it as a passion to help seniors and their families navigate through their health care options. Every level of health care for seniors is necessary and serves a great need. Seniors need to know that they do have options and choices when it comes to their health care. I enjoy sharing my experiences with them and assisting in whatever way that I can and connecting them to resources available to them.
Women in BusinessDuring my professional career, I also had the joy to be a part of the Greater Mooresville Chamber of Commerce, serving on the executive board from 2005-2010. Being elected and serving as the president of a growing organization was a great accomplishment professionally. We grew from less than 90 members to more than 350 during the years that I was involved with the board. Networking to bring new members into our organization was very exciting. Learning about other’s
businesses and connecting them to leads or partnering businesses was very rewarding. Many of those business contacts made then are now considered good friends!
I’m also the proud mother of two teenage daughters. Cheyenne is a senior and will be headed to USI next fall for pre-med studies. Sierra is a junior looking at options to work with and help children. We live on a farm north of Martinsville with my fiancé, Clint and his daughter, Jacey. We enjoy farm-living with our growing number of animals (Angus cows, goats, chickens, dogs, cats and
a duck), traveling and spending time with friends.

Brandy Coomes named Executive Director of MainStreet Shelbyville The Mainstreet Board of Directors has appointed Brandy Coomes as their new Executive Director, following Amy Haacker’s departure to become the director of the Blue River Foundation. “Brandy has served as the Assistant Director of Mainstreet Shelbyville for several years making her transition to head the organization a natural fit for both herself and our board” reported Chris King, President Mainstreet Shelbyville, in a recent statement. “Her background in historic architectural design and her expertise in historic building colors will go a long way to helping us expand our already successful Façade Grant program. Also, her demonstrated ability to work closely with downtown merchants and property owners will allow us to place additional emphasis on our Downtown Merchant, promotion programs.”
New programs for 2014 will include a mix of creative incentives to assist downtown businesses with start-up costs, building interior renovation grants, and rent subsidies for new businesses. Mainstreet is also developing new grant programs for awning replacement and exterior painting. These new programs are made possible by funding increases from The City of Shelbyville and a new commitment to support Mainstreet from Shelby County government. “Combined, these new funds are planned to allow us to aggressively promote a cleaner, better maintained and more desirable downtown historic business district. Mainstreet Shelbyville is growing and all of us on the board are excited about the possibilities we see. Having Brandy at the helm will give us the
necessary leadership to realize our dream of working to revitalize downtown Shelbyville,” said King.

Women in Business
Chelie Herthel is one of the co-owners of Your Resource Solution Inc. She has over twenty years expertise in set-up, development, launch, training, and ongoing management within corporate, government, NPO, and retail venues.
Chelie is fully experienced as a business owner. She has spent time in related disciplines including business start-ups, sales support, customer service, employee training and development, people resource management, project development and support, business efficiencies and optimization, and website development or enhancement. Chelie has also taught classes to assist individuals develop and enhance their personal and professional skills. These classes included personal mentoring, resume building, and various computer skills and types of software. She and her business partner believe that there are many unmet needs in our community and surrounding communities. Those needs are both business needs and professional development needs. YRS-Inc. was started to offer services in both of those areas.
Kimberly Wingo, also a co-owner of the company, has always had an affinity for learning computer applications and teaching others. Kimberly has several years experience within the community in social services, and has always tried to find ways of serving in the community by actively volunteering with different organizations, including school and church. Kimberly admits that there has always been one thread that has run through each of her positions and volunteer opportunities. Throughout most of her career, she has always found a way to teach coworkers how to utilize their technology more fully. In 2006, Kimberly transitioned her career from social services to training delivery and training development. She spent six years with Xerox’s training development team. “That job became a passion. I felt like I had a completely new career, and I loved every minute of it!” Through her on-the-job mentoring experiences she learned the skill of instructional design and project management. Xerox’s recent workforce reduction impacted Kimberly directly. After facing a job loss, Kimberly and Chelie, life-long friends, agreed to partner and form YRS-Inc. The partnering combined their skills, expertise and common desire to provide a needed service to their community, with the goal of providing support to small businesses seeking methods to improve their office efficiencies and to fill training-related needs. “We have been working hard to set aside funds for purchasing portable laptops so we can establish a ‘mobile’ training unit, offering training on-site within local businesses.”
Kimberly and Chelie identified that our community no longer offers adult computer education courses for professional development. Both Kimberly and Chelie have become certified IC3 instructors. “This will have a decidedly direct positive impact on our community and surrounding communities. It will enable individuals to obtain or improve their computer proficiency and directly increase their marketability and value in our local workplace,” says Chelie. “Businesses will have the ability to contract for specific training for specific levels of proficiency and types of computer skills.” They are very excited to have the opportunity to offer in-class, face-to-face, and person-to-person training that will enhance peoples’ daily lives and enable them to be more productive, efficient, and provide opportunities for advancement and promotion. “It is wonderful to be offered such diverse and gratifying opportunities and challenges with each new fresh class, client, and project that we are blessed to participate in with you as a partner and ‘team member’.”To contact Your Resource Solution Inc., call 317-512-0662.

Member SpotlightDelta Theta Tau SororityZeta Lambda Chapter
Delta Theta Tau was founded in 1903 by five high school girls in Muncie, Indiana for the advancement of philanthropy and charity.
Our sorority is comprised of six divisions: National Council, Board of Trustees, Provinces, Chapters, Alumnae Associations, and Members-At-Large.
We have an annual National Convention in July. Chapters are represented by delegates who vote on national business.
There are eight Provinces in geographical groupings. Each province has an annual convention with each chapter represented by a delegate. Communication among the members of Delta Theta Tau is their national publication published quarterly, GRIT.
Our chapter, Zeta Lambda, was founded in 1938 and is located in Shelbyville, currently with 23 active members. Our members enjoy fellowship during our monthly meetings and our social functions as well as our commitment of service to our community.
Proceeds from our events provide a scholarship for each of our county’s five high schools as well as support of local charities such as Hospice, Sanctuary of Shelbyville, Salvation Army Food Pantry, Pantry Pals, Senior Services, and many more including the Ectodermal Dysplasias Foundation on the national level.

Chamber Happenings2013 Chili Cook Off
Congratulations to Ashford Place Health Campus, our 2013 Chili Cook off Champions. MaryAnn Lux was their representative. Approximately 207 bowls of chili were served at the SHS Homecoming Football game on September 27,
raising $560! All proceeds benefit the Shelbyville High School Athletic Boosters as well as Shelbyville Centrals Schools Dive into Reading program. This year, the Dive into Reading Program shared their donation with the
Shelby County Public Library.
