When building or remod-eling a client is investing their hopes, finances, and future in their home, and they must be sure their investment in professional help is legitimate. As a very young profession, be-ing officially established in the 1960’s, Interior Design is still very ill-defined to the general public. The following are three big differences in working with an Interior Designer as opposed to an Interior Decorator.

Education: The first major difference is the level of education involved for each field. Interior Design requires four years of col-lege education; the first two are the same as those in architecture school. The final years focus on inte-rior specialization for both commercial and residen-tial spaces, even includ-ing a bit of advertising. What all of this translates to be is a specific knowl-edge of how interiors can be changed; how floors, cabinets and other finish work can be installed; and exactly what furnishings and finishes can be used in specific situations.

Interior Decorators are not required to have any specific education and/or knowledge of interior construction and product composition. Their focus is to provide ideas for ac-cessorizing existing interi-ors, and many times they prefer to work with the cli-ent’s existing furnishings. Many Decorators have a very strong artistic talent but there is no regulation to guarantee you’ll get the professional results you are looking for.

Construction: There are two areas of specialty that are vital to remodels that go beyond the realm of decorating; alteration of interior walls and layout, as well as specific fabri-cation and installation of products. These definitely fall under the expertise of Interior Designers. A very common client for me as an Interior Designer is someone who has pur-chased or inherited an older home with a very, closed floor plan. Though I am not qualified to alter load bearing walls, the de-sired change of floor plan is achieved by moving or removing part or all of ex-isting interior walls. These opening of traffic pattern and eye line make any home feel bigger and

more usable. Also, with the growing trend of built-in casework many remodels require the knowledge of furniture construction and installation, and some-times lighting for display pieces.

Range: As the previous points have eluded, In-terior Designers retain a broad scope of specific knowledge. From the re-worked skeleton of the space to the installation of cabinetry, through the specific finishes and deco-ration, an Interior Designer can help through the entire journey. Whether the concern is the right floor-ing, cabinets, countertops, window treatments, etc…Designers have a constant learning forum with sales representatives so specific knowledge of each product used is current and fresh in our minds. Decorators also have this relationship available, but most don’t function as retailers, which is necessary to have a des-ignated sales representa-tive for manufacturers and distributors.

Decorators have a great passion and talent for their specific scope of service. Many are great with mixing textures and colors and can really breathe life into a dull interior. The difference is this limitation of scope, as well as no requirement for formal training. I wish for this information to be used to determine what profession is appropriate for your specific project. And of course, when in doubt, call and ask ques-tions; be an informed consumer.

5. Combination Shed

One of the new types beginning to come out on the market and it’s a great concept. Its espe-cially useful if you need to store firewood. Basi-cally it’s a regular garden shed, with a open style leanto attached to it. The materials all match and one section blends in

For those of us that live in one of these wonderful states that has four distinct seasons and winters get COLD, below freezing, getting ready for winter is a little more work. We live for our beautiful summers when we can enjoy outdoor water fountains on our deck and in our gardens, spend time gardening, even getting new, fun garden statues that we can enjoy every day. But, before the deep freeze there are a few important things you must do if you have out-door fountains or garden statuary.

Cast stone, fiberglass and ceramic are typical materials used in out-door decor as they are durable materials and lightweight enough to handle without too much trouble. These materials are made to withstand the elements but if it gets wet, freezes and thaws it can crack. Below is a “how to” guide to keep-ing your garden foun-tains and statuary crack free and beautiful this winter so when spring comes you can start enjoying!

If size permits simply drain your fountain and bring it to your garage or shed. With tiered foun-tains you can sometimes disassemble them to store them. With large outdoor fountains or heavy cast stone foun-tains this is not always possible so you will want to take other steps to winterize your fountain.

1. Before the freezing weather comes drain all water out of your foun-tain. This is the most important thing you can do.

2. Remove the fountain pump if possible and store it indoors. This is a great time clean your pump thoroughly so de-bris, algae and dirt don’t sit in and on the pump all winter.

3. It is recommended that you purchase a fountain cover for your garden statues or fountains. This will keep moisture out. Outdoor fountain covers are waterproofed and UV stabilized and have a drawstring at the bottom for ultimate protection. They also come in many sizes so you shouldn’t have a problem finding one that will fit the size of your fountain or statues.

4. If you don’t plan to cover your outdoor fountain you must put some type of blankets, towels or other absorbent material in the basin of your fountain and the tiers. Water must not get in the fountain and freeze as it will cause the fountain to crack.

Hopefully these tips help you prepare for winter. A fountain cover will last you years and may be the best investment you can make to keep your garden foun-tains and statuary beauti-ful for many years.

Don’t wait for Market to Hit Bottom Before InvestingWhether you’ve been in-vesting for four decades or four weeks, you’ve no doubt heard this clas-sic piece of investment advice: Buy low and sell high. And it’s generally good advice, too, because the less you pay for your investments, the greater your chances may be for earning bigger returns. But how low is “low”? Since stock prices have already fallen so much, shouldn’t you wait until the market hits bottom before investing?

Ideally, that would indeed be a smart move. In reality, however, it’s impossible for anyone to predict when a bear market will hit its low-est point. Did we bottom out before the huge rally on Oct. 13, which turned out to be the stock mar-ket’s biggest day in seven decades? Or are we going to bottom out following the drop of 733 points on Oct. 15, the second-worst day ever for the Dow Jones Industrial Average? Given such wild extremes, it’s pretty hard to project when the market will finally hit its lowest point. Still, identifying the bottom isn’t strictly a matter of guesswork – because we do have a history that we can study.

Of course, in the invest-ment world, what’s hap-pened in the past can’t necessarily predict the future. Nonetheless, it’s also true that the financial markets over time, have shown some definite pat-terns. Consequently, it’s interesting to note that, since 1900, the average bear market has lasted slightly over 13 months, according to Ned Davis Research – and the cur-rent bear market is 12 months old. So, unless we are facing a truly disas-trous economic outlook, history suggests that our present bear market could be close to running its course.

If we are nearing a mar-ket bottom, what does it mean to you? It means opportunity. A bear market tends to bring down the prices of most stocks – even those that represent strong companies with good prospects. Right now, you have a chance to buy these quality stocks at lower prices. And buy-ing quality stocks at good prices can be a formula for long-term investment success.

But what if we’re not yet at the market bottom? If you buy stocks now, and the market declines further, won’t you be making a mistake?

That depends, in large part, on how much farther you think the market may fall. Following the Oct. 15 drop, the S&P 500 was down 38 percent in 2008. That’s already a pretty big drop – and it’s certainly big enough to have dragged down the prices of even good stocks. Could these prices fall further? Of course. On the other hand, quality stocks are typically the first ones to bounce back when the market recovers, so if you wanted to wait until you were sure we hit rock bottom before investing, you might miss the first stages of a rally – which is when the biggest gains typically happen.

In all likelihood, we are in for more volatility in the months ahead. And it will only be at some point in the future when we can look back and truly identify the market bottom. By then, it may be too late to take advantage of it – so don’t miss the opportunities you have today.

Unsettling Times Still Offer Oppor-tunities for Inves-tors

If Frank Sinatra were around, he might not sing “It Was a Very Good Year” in front of a bunch of inves-tors. In fact, after ponder-ing the chaos of the past few weeks, many people might think this is a terrible time to invest in the stock market. However, history often has a way of turning the tables.

Certainly, there’s reason for concern. After all, Con-gress has just approved a $700 billion bailout of the financial services industry, following the collapse of some major Wall Street firms and large banks. And the Dow Jones Industrial Average has fallen more than 25 percent since its all-time high in October 2007.

And yet, we’ve certainly had other years in which the investment landscape seemed grim. For ex-ample, in 1973, a series of events — including the Watergate scandal, the OPEC oil embargo, the Vietnam War and the resignation of Vice Presi-dent Spiro Agnew — had shaken the public’s mo-rale. Given all this, you might have thought that 1973 was a bad year in which to invest in the stock market.

But you’d have been wrong. From Nov. 30, 1973, to Nov. 30, 1983, the S&P 500 recorded an average annual return of 10.9 percent. So, if you had invested $10,000 in the market at the beginning of that period and reinvested the dividends, it would have grown to $28,139 by the end. (Keep in mind, however, that the S & P 500 is an unmanaged in-dex, and you cannot invest directly into it.)

Of course, as you’ve heard, “past performance cannot guarantee future results.” And some sig-nificant differences exist between 1973 and 2008. In 1973, most of the problems that worried investors were external to the financial markets. This year, it’s the markets themselves that have turned somewhat toxic. Still, there’s some cause for optimism. Consider the following:

1. Bailout may improve business climate — One of the chief goals of the $700 billion bailout is to inject some much-needed cash into the financial system, which has been rendered almost illiquid by the sub-prime mortgage crisis. Increased liquidity means that businesses will have easier access to credit — and all companies need credit to expand their

operations and become profitable. Obviously, the greater the number of successful companies, the more investment opportu-nities become available.

2. Regulatory climate may change — While several factors are responsible for our current turmoil, one key culprit appears to be the lack of appropriate reg-ulation over some aspects of the financial markets. It seems quite likely that lawmakers, in the near future, will develop some new regulatory guidelines that may help prevent a recurrence of the events of this year.

3. Stocks are attractively priced — Look for quality stocks — representing companies with competi-tive products, strong man-agement and long track records of profitability — and consider buying these stocks when their price is low Typically, qual-ity stocks are the first to rebound when the market recovers.

Here’s the bottom line: The investment climate may be brighter tomorrow — and you can find good stocks at lower prices today. So don’t stick your money under the mattress. Years from now, you may look back and realize that 2008 was, indeed, a very good year in which to continue investing.

One of the most over-looked avenues to get on results page is to utilize social media. Visualize social media as virtual real estate - the earlier a small business can get their hands on a variety of properties, the better the chance they will reap the benefits when the area begins to develop more.

Here are a few valuable properties within social media that a small busi-ness should consider investing their time and efforts in:

Social Search Directo-ries - There are a variety of directories - such as Yelp, CitySearch, and even YellowPages - that allow users to search for businesses, get their infor-mation, and write reviews. Adding reviews to a typical “online phonebook” can help create a community around a business and give the business an op-portunity to address any negative feedback.

Even search engines such as Google and Yahoo are beginning to show inter-est in the value of these communities. They are beginning to populate and enhance their results with results from social (and local) search directories. In addition to those re-sults, search engines are creating local business centers to make adding your business as simple as possible.

Blogs - With free tools available like WordPress and BlogSpot, creating a small business (or per-sonal, for that matter) blog has never been easier. Blogs have broken through the stigma of being trivial and have become a cred-ible source of providing information, establishing expertise, and increasing position on search result pages.

1) Get enough sleep! - Most adults require between 6-9 hours of sleep each night to be able to function well the following day. Some research has shown a link between lack of sleep and the likelihood of obesity in adults. So ensuring you have enough sleep will also have benefits when it comes to managing your weight as well as your energy levels.

2) Don’t sleep too much! - Too much sleep can have the reverse effect causing you to feel tired. Think of it as charging a battery too much. Pretty soon the battery will start working for smaller durations be-fore another recharge is required. Too much sleep can also weaken your immune system making you more susceptible to colds.

3) Eat smaller meals more regularly - This will condi-tion your body to “know” that the next meal will not be too far away. Your body can then provide a more consistent supply of energy. This is much better than eating one or two big meals a day where, more often than not, you’ll find yourself snacking on junk in between.

4) Exercise regularly - This doesn’t necessarily mean going to the gym every day. You can walk your dog around the park or dance to your favourite music for half an hour each day. The important part is the physical activity that not only helps your body but your mind as well.

5) Get out in the sun - for a little bit. Nothing beats natural sunlight. Apart from the benefits of spending some time outdoors, absorbing the rays from this magnificent natural energy source is also good for your skin, converting cholesterol into small amounts of Vitamin D which is said to promote calcium absorption. 6) Avoid excess caffeine - This includes coke and other soft drinks as well as coffee. These fruits not only give you a decent boost of energy, but are packed with antioxidants and fiber as well.

7) Avoid sugary foods - Like caffeine, sugary foods can give you an immediate energy spike followed by a sharp crash. The idea is to avoid or replace an artificial peak/trough en-ergy pattern with one that is more level and regular. Low GI (Glycaemic Index) foods such as nuts and low-fat yoghurt are more beneficial.

8) Take vitamin supple-ments - At minimum, take vitamin supplements a few times a week. The B-group vitamins in par-ticular help the body to convert the foods you eat into energy.

9) Take time out for your-self - Do something you enjoy for at least 15 min-utes every day. Listen to music, play the guitar or give a friend a call to gos-sip. Everybody needs to take a breather from work and rejuvenate from time to time. Taking up a new hobby is also an excellent way to do this.

10) Check your iron levels - Women who are actively incorporating the above 9 steps should consider a visit to their GP if their level of tiredness appears to be prolonged. The Truth About Chemicals Found in Tap waterby: Lauren S Johnson

Forty years ago, there was a limited amount of infor-mation about chemicals found in tap water. At that time, the conservation of water, air and soil occupied the thoughts of many fu-ture environmentalists.

Today some former con-servationists have joined the Environmental Work-ing Group (EWG). That Group has released infor-mation about the chemi-cals found in tap water. Their information has stated that there are 141 unregulated chemicals in the typical glass of tap water.

Such statistics underline the advantage to seeking an alternative to tap water. The public has seen both bottled water and filtered tap water as a likely alter-native. Does bottled water lack the chemicals found in tap water? Have those same harmful chemicals been removed from fil-tered tap water? Those are the questions that this article intends to answer.

A large percentage of the unwanted chemical sub-stances in today’s drinking waterresult from efforts that were supposed to dis-infect some element of the environment. Such disinfection efforts have introduced nitrates, chlo-roform, barium, arsenic and copper into municipal water supplies.

Today, the water from the tap contains so many dif-ferent chemicals that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been unable to assess the risk of exposure to each of those chemicals. Even some chemicals that put the public at risk remain absent from the list of

chemical limitations on water, limitations that are enforced by the EPA.

Read and consider what Jane Houlihan, vice presi-dent of the EWG has said: “...in many communities the water that comes out of the tap could be contami-nated with scores of chem-icals.” Ms. Houlihan did not issue that statement in order to alarm people. She simply wanted to call attention to the fact that there are many unhealth-ful chemicals found in tap water.

Today a growing number of groups such as the EWG have found it necessary to expand on their informa-tion about the chemical-laden tap water. Those groups have learned that chemicals from the plas-tic can leech into bottled water. While some people have reverted to filling metal containers with water from the tap, others have chosen to use filtered tap water.

Agriculture, industry and the expansion of urban settings has increased the number of chemicals in the aquatic environ-ment. Treatment plants lack the ability to remove all of those chemicals. Homeowners and busi-nesses must look to filter-ing systems, if they want to provide residents and employees with clean and good-tasting water.

The most cost effective solution is a point of use filtering system. Still, not all filtering systems do an effective job of delivering pure water to each person who has gone in search of clean drinking water. The most effective filter-ing equipment contains activated carbon filters, in combination with ion exchange and micron filtration.

When a homeowner or business owner invests in such a system, then he or she can expect to enjoy a worry-free sleep at night. He or she will know that either employees or residents and guests are able to refresh themselves with the safest possible water.

Asthma Symptom Preventionby: Allen White

The key to exercise or sports participation for anyone with asthma is to prevent the process that leads to airway narrow-ing. Traditionally, a bron-chodilator is prescribed for use before exertion. This medicine is usually given by a metered dose inhaler (MDI) and a spacer. The bronchodilator works by relaxing muscles that surround the airways. When they are relaxed, the muscles can’t squeeze the airways, and the airways stay open.

Although this seems to work to some degree for many people, a bronchodi-lator before exercise may not be the most complete treatment because a bron-chodilator does not treat inflammation. The swelling and mucus in the airways, therefore, can still be a problem. The broncho-dilator before exercise treatment plan also does not cover the possibility of spontaneous exercise that is common among children, such as running outside to play ball with friends or racing to catch the school bus.

It is likely that many people who only have asthma symptoms with exercise have a low level of inflam-mation in their airways. In other words, their inflam-mation is not enough to cause symptoms while their bodies are at rest, but they do come on with exercise. These individu-als may also experience mild symptoms during other times of biological stress, such as when they catch a cold. If this low-level inflammation exists, there may be long-term consequences as well. Some asthma research-ers believe that constant inflammation can cause permanent damage to the airways. No studies have yet been done, however, to find out if there is long-term lung damage in people with asthma whose symp-toms are brought on only with physical exertion.

The possibility of low-level airway inflammation raises this question: Should peo-ple whose symptoms only occur with exercise take a daily anti-inflammatory medicine? This therapy would decrease or elimi-nate the inflammation. Daily anti-inflammatory therapy would also allow for better tolerance of spontaneous exertion. It might also increase their breathing capacity

more than if they used only a bronchodilator be-fore exercising. Consider Scott’s situation:

Whenever ten-year-old Scott exercised, he coughed, wheezed, and had chest tightness and shortness of breath. He had occasional wheezing in the spring, but other-wise he had no symptoms or complaints. He used a bronchodilator when springtime symptoms ap-peared. As a competitive swimmer, he also used it before swim practice and team meets.

Halfway through the swim-ming season, his doctor suggested that Scott try an anti-inflammatory medi-cine, even though he had no symptoms. After a few weeks, his coaches no-ticed that Scott was swim-ming several seconds faster. Scott also became aware that he was able to swim faster for longer distances. His parents, however, did not renew the prescription for the anti-inflammatory medicine because Scott seemed better. Two weeks after stopping the medicine, Scott’s times fell back to where they were before he started the medicine. Scott also noticed the change and asked his parents if he could restart the anti-inflammatory medicine. Within two weeks of re-starting the daily therapy, Scott was again swimming faster.

While daily anti-inflamma-tory therapy might improve the athlete’s performance, there is the increased cost of daily therapy in both time and money. Different health care professionals treat asthma differently, and each individual with asthma is unique. If your child has asthma symp-toms when exercising or playing sports, talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner about whether a daily anti-inflammatory treatment is right for your child.
