Hello everyone,Wow, November is here and the count down to Christmas and the summer holidays has begun.

We welcomed Senior Sergeant Angelo Ferrara, Station Manager Bellarine Police Station to our October meeting. Judith and Sandy met Angelo at the Bellarine Community Safety Workshop we attended on behalf of the BHA in response to an invitation from the Hon Lisa Neville and Assistant Commissioner for Police Tess Walsh.

Angelo's presentation informed us that the Bellarine averages 25-30 crimes per week; Barwon Heads owns 5-10% of that. The three main crimes are theft from cars, burglaries, and theft of cars. These crimes are related to youth, drugs and alcohol. Angelo pointed out that most of our youth are fantastic and that crime is committed by a small minority of repeat offenders (not from Barwon Heads).

Locking your houses and cars does actually make a considerable difference to crime statistics. Call 000 if you are concerned as this is now the general police number for an incident that requires police attendance. Pick up a Victoria Police Residential Information Kit from the Ocean Grove Police Station. Invite the police to talk to your schools, clubs and groups. Be aware.

The BHA is keen to start the conversation regarding the revival of Neighbourhood Watch in Barwon Heads. We will organize a community meeting to discuss this in the New Year. If you are interested please contact us via our website or talk to one of our Committee.

We also heard from Jeff Brooks the Chair of the Barwon Heads Airport, which is privately owned with 23 owners. We all know that it is a very busy place, but were

amazed by the numbers that Jeff provided and were very interested in the obvious economic benefit to the Barwon Heads economy. 30,000 people come through the airport each year. There are over 5000 skydivers and 13,000 support/visitors for skydiving. There is also the Warbird, business flights, flight training, Geelong helicopters, the rescue helicopter, Australian Marine oil spill, the CFA, aircraft hangars and the wonderful J.L.I Seafoods. We discussed in detail the close proximity of the airport and the road and the obvious distractions of the skydivers. All present shared serious concerns about the Barwon Heads Rd and talked about our various attempts to improve the safety of the road. Negotiations with the Council and VicRoads have come to very little. The BHA has recently written to Vic Roads regarding a number of issues, including:- The intersection of Black Road Rd and the Barwon Heads Rd has been assessed by Vic Roads as worthy of remedial attention. While the community is waiting for the required funds for an extensive treatment we request Vic Roads install the same treatment at Black Rock Rd/Barwon Heads Rd as they have at the Ghazeepore Rd/Mt Duneed Rd intersection. The installation of two stop signs and clear road marking would make a considerable difference. - The deep ditch which runs along the road reserve on the northern side of the Barwon Heads Rd, (near the old church), which is dangerous and from time to time, causes cars to pitch and loose control. Repair is urgently needed to increase traffic safety. - skydivers landing do present a distraction to motorists. A risk assessment of their landing proximity to the road is required. - justification for the 100k speed limit on this narrow and windy road?

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The BH Pedestrian Safety Project is in its final stages. VicRoads is preparing the budget and technical details for implementation of Option A. This option was by far the most favoured option in the public consultation process. (77% in favour) We will be reporting back to our community as soon as we have the details from VicRoads. Many of us know about defibrillators. True, but do we know where they are in our town, and do we actually know how to use one if we were called upon to do so? Good question. Apparently our chance of surviving a heart attack by a bystander using a defibrillator is triple that of waiting for a paramedic! BHA plans to follow this up and identify where our defibrillators are locationed and explore the possibility of some training in their use. Is there a map already in existence?

With a hot summer predicted we have invited the CFA to attend our November meeting at the Barwon

thHeads Senior Citizens in Clifford Pde on 16 November at 7:30pm. Please join us and email your thoughts to us through our website. www.barwonheadsassociation.com

Health Clinic in a town several miles from the main tourist centres. I was so pleased to hear that they had raised the large amount of money needed to provide a part-time doctor, plus a trained resident assistant to run that clinic. We all feel so proud of the work done by Jan Johansson and her committee. Some of our customers who are holidaying in Bali get our excess children’s clothing which they pack into their suit-cases and distribute when they arrive. We are so very fortunate. Partly because ours is such a consumer-oriented society we are inundated with donations, and to know of ways in which the clothes which we know we cannot sell, will go to many people who are so much less fortunate at least makes us feel less guilty.

Not all is “sweetness and light” in our work, however. Many people arrive to d o n a t e a s w e volunteers are taking bags and boxes etc. in to the Sorting areas. Many kind people will offer help as we struggle with very over-loaded bags etc. I am so very grateful for that help, though I know since no-one can foresee WHEN

goods are dropped off, I can’t appeal for more “muscle” at any particular time. But just occasionally, something will be left which causes me to say many VERY

UNLADY-LIKE THINGS about thoughtless donors. I know that many people feel that what they leave is so good that it is certain to be sold. Other less thoughtful people are simply aware of how expensive tip fees are, and how difficult it is sometimes to take an item to the tip. I do not know in which category a recent donor fits, but WOULD hope it is the former. Someone dropped off a VERY pre-loved barbeque. It was so big and heavy that we would have been quite unable to store and display it, let alone MOVE it. It really was in an appalling condition. I had contacted the firm which may have been able to identify the culprit on our CCTV apparatus, but unfortunately, such an outcome did not eventuate. So we are left with something which we KNOW will require quite an effort to dispose of. Obviously any Op Shop relies on the quantity and quality of donated goods, but please keep in mind that if you would not buy something you’re thinking of donating, put it in your own garbage. We do currently send off many bags of clothing to a company which on-sells items we know our customers would not buy, but we are paid only 25 cents a kilo for this “service”, which we are forced to use given that our customers choose good quality stuff only. Now please don’t let my grouches put you off donating....most things left for us DO sell. Please also come to get your bargains and help us to help others by your purchases. Soon we will be distributing money again to many worthy local organisations, so please help! God bless you, Helen Edwards, Shop Supervisor

Our October concert was a special one for us as the BARWON HEADS CHORALE performed, & was lead & conducted by our inspirational leader Natale Lewington & accompanied by our gifted pianist Hazel Mitchell! With our Chorale concerts we choose to raise funds for charity & our chosen charity this time was LIFELINE. It is a world-wide organisation for counselling services by telephone & plays an important support role in many areas in society. It has been established in the Greater Geelong region since 1978, manned by volunteers with very little government support.

Our concert began with a lively performance of “My Fair Lady” which was enthusiastically received & we thoroughly enjoyed singing it! “Ave Verum Corpus” , a beautiful & sensitive aria by Mozart followed which we really enjoy performing. Then, as the poster for the concert suggested, “Lets all sing!” & Natale encouraged everyone to join in with the round—“The Waters of Babelon”-- & the participation was enthusiastic which was great!

“Here, There And Everywhere”, a Beatles song came next & was followed by “Monday, Monday”, a happy & smiling song from The Mammas and The Papas”.

Natale’s solo performance thrilled us all! She sang “Un Bel Di” from Puccini’s opera “Madame Butterfly” which was glorious & her long time favourite “Stardust” by Hoagy Carmichael (Bing Crosby style!) Another popular group is Abba & we performed their number “The Winner Takes It All”.

Emma Webb, a member of our chorale, performed a delightful solo on flute by Debussy called “Syrinx” & introduced it with a brief synopsis of the story which gave us a vivid picture interpretation to Debussy’s music!

The concert concluded with a popular “Beatles” singalong accompanied by another talented chorale member, Sara Brownell, who is the wonderful “backup” accompanist for our choir!

A sumptuous afternoon tea followed which was supplied by members of the chorale.

Our next concert will be held on Sunday, 8th November at 2.30pm. in the Anglican Church, Barwon Heads & will be a delightful surprise full of young talent! The Geelong College has discovered a wonderful group of young enthusiastic wind players, including flute, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon & more, & will perform in a mixture of group ensembles. Do come & support them & stay for afternoon tea. Donation: Friends: $10; Visitors: $15. Enquiries: please phone Jenny on 5254 2580.

Blessings and Bothers!!On so many occasions lately I thank God for the wonderful people who are our volunteers. It is so good to hear customers compliment us on the lay-out of the shop, the excellence of the Book Department, our cheap pricing, and that our volunteers in the Show-room work so tirelessly to clear rubbish, yet manage to provide lots of fascinating things for all who seek them. I am also so very fortunate that just when our volunteers complained that they were “drowning” under the quantity of dress-making material which had been donated, we heard the Uniting Church was appealing for just that! Women from the church were making skirts for indigenous people in Central Australia, and were very happy when we were able to off-load our excess for such a worthy cause. I had also offered to give as many items of small clothing as we could pack up for the young woman from our town who was going on holiday in Bali. Many locals know of the “Bali Smiles” initiative, in which we’ve been involved. This wonderful organisation has now donated the first Toilet, and more importantly, a

Jeremy Gaylard, (above) committee member of the Barwon Heads Association, is no stranger to public life.In fact, his impressive CV reads like that of three men.Along with his wife, Felicity, Jeremy retired to Barwon Heads from Shepparton five years ago, although ‘retired’ is a loose description as Jeremy has an active interest in local, state and federal politics.

A former Mayor of Shepparton, Jeremy has presided as chair and various other positions over numerous groups, organisations and committees among which are:-Shepparton Agricultural Society (member for 17 years; Executive member of Shepparton and District Tourism Association; Hospice F u n d r a i s i n g C o m m i t t e e ; C o u n c i l Representative & Patron of Bulding Appeal, Senior Citizens; Member Shepparton Apex Club; Chair SPC Relocation Task Force; Instigator of Youth Forum Raising $7,000 for Disadvantaged Young People; Worked with Italian Senior Citizens on Clubroom Refurbishment; Instigated Council Support for Albanian Refugees; Committee Member for the Establishment of a Sporting Complex for the Aboriginal Community; Chair of the Victorian Catchment Management Council; Chair of the Sustainable Regional Development Board; Board Member of the Murray Dar l ing Basin Commission; Community Advisory Council & Board Member of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry & Horticulture at the University of Melbourne.....From 1993 to May 2,000, Jeremy was Chair of the Melbourne Market authority, the body that oversees the operation of the Melbourne Markets and includes the biggest growers’ market in the southern hemisphere. He has a long commitment to rural development issues including land care, salinity and regional economic reform and his interests have led to extensive travel throughout Australia liaising with industry groups and farmers. As chair of Victoria’s review of Catchment

Management Structures, the Catchment Management Authorities were established across the state, a first for Australia. In 1997, he was appointed to the Premier’s Rural & Regional Reference Group.

During 1998, he was elected as the Australian Delegate on the World Union of Wholesale Markets and consequently became Vice-President of the World Union of Wholesale Markets during the council meeting in Poland. In 1999, Jeremy moved to Indonesia to establish grape growing enterprises in Australia for Indonesian companies. Then, in 2001 he moved back to Australia to establish a successful exporting business in fruit, vegetables and meat into many Asian countries.

Jeremy and Felicity love Barwon Heads and he believes we have an enviable lifestyle. It comes naturally to him to become involved in public life and he’s very impressed with the Barwon Heads Association and with the issues it tackles on behalf of the community.

Jeremy is an excellent resource for the Barwon Heads Association to draw from and is an intelligent, engaging and thoughtful person who has led a most productive life.

Come along to a Barwon Heads Association meeting and introduce yourself to Jeremy...he has some wonderful stories to relate.

When a bird choses a partner, it mates for life. And this sole magpie had just lost it’s very best friend. Think forward folds, yin twists and karma yoga. With her cycles and seasons, nature reminds us of the beauty and the pain of being in love and of letting go. Just as the short lived blossom falls with the spring-bound winds, so too does the life of the flower let go to provide the seed of the tree. Her cycles remind us of the process of love and of loss, light and dark, birth and death. Watching the grief of a sole magpie on a fence post made me remember the fragility and the vulnerability of life. That this life force exists only to present itself to it us with her fullest potential. That we express this fragility by being vulnerable with our hearts. And that the tapestry that weaves these two powers together is what real living is all about.

And real living can hurt.

I picked up the dead magpie off the middle of the road. It was warm in it’s lifelessness across my hands. I lay it off the road, just back in the sandy dunes - a little way from the sole magpie on the fence post . I looked out to the sea and stared.

I was late to work on Wednesday again. But this time it wasn’t because I was making beds. It’s because I was really living. While helping someone say goodbye.

X www.rachehelyyoga.com.au

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

So, I was late for work on Wednesday.

This is not a first time occurrence. In fact, I’m kinda late most Wednesdays. With beds to make and lunches to pack, being an on-time working mum is hard. My very-obliging boss changed my start time from 8:00 to 8:15. Then again to 8:30. I thought about 9:00, but decided simply to boycott the beds.

I drive the 13th beach road to work. It takes 5 minutes longer and it’s hard to do 60k on your own, but I accept 5 minutes of lateness to check out the beach with the swell. I watch the black, neoprened bodies along the peeling, green waves. Makes me feel good - at least I won’t be as late to work as them - I give thanks for the beautiful coastline that I’m blessed to call home.

Now that we’re in full spring, there’s more to see than just wind and waves. This morning at beacon, was the first of the winnebagos. At horse beach, a steam windowed commodore. But while their cramped bodies slumbered, the road was fully awake and alive. Dancing with the song of spring birds. I drove along this road on Wednesday, high on life and salt and running 5 minutes late, when I saw a crumpled black and white shape on the bitumen ahead. As I came closer, I saw the life force that the shape had once been. I saw a dead magpie in the middle of the road.I swerved across a little, not wanting to create more of a mess, and proceeded to drive on to be late for work - when I saw a lone magpie sitting on the fence. It was about 10 metres down from where the dead bird lay. The lone magpie didn’t flinch at my car moving past. It kept looking back to the east. Back to where the other bird was still.Back to the soul mate it had lost. Even though I was already late for work, I slowed to a stop. I turned my car around, and drove back to the fence post where the sole magpie sat. I felt so much sadness for this empty bird. It made no movement, sang no song. It just sat there in stillness, staring

The Barwon Heads Festival of the Sea (FOTS) Committee is

inviting expressions of interest from individuals or groups within our community who

would like to hold an activity or event during the Festival of the Sea in 2016 (Wednesday 16 to

Sunday 20 March). Activities and events could include music, art exhibits, spoken word, participatory performances, a forum, and so much more.

We are particularly keen to have contributions that reflect our mission:

Celebrating our links to the sea through the diversity of our environment, history, arts, culture and lifestyle.

Your ideas, creativity, and good planning will be supported by the FOTS Committee where possible, with practical assistance such as funding for some expenses, links to other funding, insurance cover, or finding a venue.

Expression of interest forms can be requested by emailing [email protected] and need to be returned by 4 December 2015.

¯ Songs of the South ¯The Festival is also looking for great songs about this local area, and will run a competition during the week. Shortlisted entries will perform live, perhaps on the Saturday, before a judging panel that includes a music industry professional.

Barwon Heads/Ocean Grove do not have to be mentioned as such, but it should be clear in the lyrics that the song is about this area and has a connection to place.

The entry categories will be individuals and groups under 13 years of age, 13-18 years, and over 18. Entries are to be provided on a memory stick by February 29, 2016.More information can be requested by emailing [email protected]

We look forward to receiving many registrations and entries for these Festival activities. Margot Busch Festival Co0ordinator

stability. We connect to the three main Bandhas to support the spine and contain our core. Our drishti (gaze) is usually soft, calm, and focussed on one spot. Practising Ujjayi Breath (Victorious Breath) will create focus and stamina. Now we are physically in the Balancing Pose, we can observe the energetic benefits. Balancing Poses connect to our Muladhara Chakra

(Base Chakra) situated at the base of the tailbone. We are connecting to being emotionally and physically strong and stable. By steadying the mind, we create focus. We are calm and grounded. We have the opportunity to experience our inner strength and confidence by overcoming self-doubt and the fear of falling............. We are creating our own internal peace. We consider Balancing Poses as Yang (masculine) in nature. They require strength and focus which creates heat in the body. However, Balancing also requires the mind to be cool and calm and therefore Yin (feminine) in nature also. We have the opportunity to achieve the perfect 'balance'.

Balancing Poses are great poses to master. We practise Leg Balances on one or two legs - as we do with Arm Balances. Balancing Poses are Virabhadrasana I, II and III (War r io r I , I I and I I I ) , U t th i ta Has ta Padangusthasana (extended Hand to Toe Pose-pictured), Vrksasana (Tree Pose), Bakasana (Crow Pose), etc.Balancing requires a 'balanced' mind. It is interesting to note how easily we can balance according to how calm we are. After a busy day of rushing around, or a sleepless night, we initially struggle with our Balances until we manage to steady the mind. To practise our Balancing Poses we need to create a strong foundation. First, let us look at our Balancing from the physical perspective. Whether the pose is a Leg Balance or an Arm Balance, we begin our focus on our connection with the mat. Balances are weight bearing which means that we are increasing our bone density and our strength in the supporting limb or limbs. As we create a firm foundation, we also engage our Bandhas (locks). A Bandha is a co-activation of muscles around a joint to protect the joint and create support. As an example, in a Leg Balance we are co-activating the muscles around the ankle joint, the knee joint and the hip joint. To support the hip we contract the buttock of the balancing leg. In an Arm Balance, we are co-activating the muscles around the wrist joint, the elbow joint and the shoulder joint, also engaging the muscles around the shoulder blades to create

It is a busy time down at the gardens at the moment with plenty of projects on the go and a healthy spring crop to tend to. It has definitely been a hot start to the spring but the gardens have been able to weather it thus far. Hopefully we will see some more rain trickle in over the coming months but the El-Nino does appear to be taking hold. The paving of the back area was completed during the October working bee and will help to keep the dust down making it a much more friendly and usable space. We will definitely have to celebrate the completion of the project at some stage soon by cranking up the pizza oven. The veggies growing in the poly tunnel are looking particularly healthy and people seem to be keen to try their hand at a range of specialist crops. So far it looks like the leafy greens appear

to be doing the best but it will be tough to top the crop of toms we harvested from a small section of the tunnel last year. The citrus are still doing their thing, it is quite incredible actually, due to the range of varieties there seems to be a crop on them almost all year round. I have taken to using the grape fruit in fresh salads but they are also particularly tasty when squeezed into a

glass of cold orange juice. We are also going to be kept busy this year netting the fruit trees as there is a bumper crop on again. The apricot has, for the second year in a row, set an enormous amount of fruit and they are maturing nicely. Nestled in amongst the fruit trees are the globe artichokes, which are also abundant at this time of year. The younger you pick them the tastier they are and the less work they are to prepare.

And now for my amazing quarterly garden joke that you have all been waiting for. What do you call a conversation between two artichokes? A heart to heart. Happy Gardening!

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECTBarwon Coast engaged the students from Barwon Heads Primary School to enhance their knowledge on local butterflies and caterpillars, their importance to our local environment and what we can do to encourage them to our gardens. To finish off their understanding, students were supported by Barwon Coast and Bellarine Landcare nursery to build a butterfly garden within the school grounds. Students from grades 2 and 3 took part in learning more about the local native plants used, assisted with the garden design, and installation of the final garden. The aim of the project is for the students to now monitor the plants and take note of when over time, caterpillars and butterflies visit the new installation. Students will gain further insight by recording their sightings and provide ongoing maintenance to the garden, whilst creating innovative ideas to educate others of the importance these native animals have in our ecosystems.Butterflies and caterpillars can be seen from Spring through to Summer. Next time you walk past the school take note of the butterfly garden which is located near the bike shed along Golflinks Road. The students would love to hear about your sightings as well, because remember, together we can make a difference. Maddie Glynn - Barwon Coast

talking spring gardening...have you mulched your garden beds yet? Now that we’ve been experiencing warmer weather, it’s

not too late to get those beds and pots mulched. You've heard it again and again - mulch for weed control, mulch for water retention, mulch to keep roots warm in the winter and cool in the summer...and don’t forget that mulching improves the structure of your soil as it breaks down.General Guidelines on How Thick To ApplyHow thick you apply mulch depends on the size of its particles.Thin, fine particles like compost or finely shredded bark are best laid only 2 inches (5.1 cm) to no more than 3 inches (7.6 cm) deep around most plants and trees. If you put down a thicker layer than that, you risk reducing oxygen to the roots and if the particle size of your mulch is larger, like straw, pine needles or chunks of bark, they can be applied up to 4 inches (10 cm) deep. The larger spaces between the chunks allow more air and light in, so you will need a thicker layer for effective weed control, water conservation, and protection from cold. Summer MulchingThe goal during the warm to hot summer months with mulch is to help provide even moisture and cooler soil for the plant's roots. Summer mulches can be left on and never removed since they will decay over the months while providing nutrients and improving the soil at the same time.

baked fennel with blood orange & olives

An easy one that gives a pleasing result...fantastic w i t h t h e m o u s s a k a below...trim & slice 3 fennel bulbs into quarters and place in an oiled lasagne dish...top with mixed greek olives, 2 sliced red onions, some quartered and chopped blood orange pieces, fennel fronds, garlic cloves, a little dried oregano and a grind or two of black pepper...drizzle with 2 tbs olive oil then bake on medium until golden and very soft...serve with an extra squeeze of blood orange.

moussaka with creamy cauliflower sauceThis is so heavenly I want to eat it 3 times a day, but I don’t. Using 500 gms grain fed organic beef, two cans of cherry tomatoes, 3 cloves garlic, one diced onion and one tsp of dried oregano, I make a basic meat sauce by melting the onion in olive oil then add the garlic for a minute followed by the meat to brown…add tomatoes and oregano and cook slowly for one hour…add half a cup of red wine and continue cooking for a further hour…turn off heat...slice 1 ½ medium eggplants into 5mm slices…place on baking tray lined with silicone paper and spray with oil…bake for 10 minutes @ 180c…turn down heat to 150c then turn and bake a further 10 minutes…remove from oven…leave oven on at 180c...Remove core then chop one cauliflower into florets…cook in boiling water for ten minutes then drain…cool for a few minutes then add to a blender with ¼ cup grated parmesan, ½ cup veggie stock and ½ cup milk (you may need to do this in batches) and a grate of fresh nutmeg…blend until smooth…lightly sauté three cloves chopped garlic with 20gms of butter in a medium-sized pot on medium heat for a minute, then add the cauliflower sauce and heat through…Pour meat sauce into a lasagne dish, arrange eggplant slices on top, pour over cauliflower sauce and sprinkle with ¼ cup grated parmesan…baked until golden on top.

Nourishing and delicious, greek lemon soup is a staple in all greek homes and is always made from all natural ingredients... You’ll need 2 litres chicken stock - either home made (poach a free range chicken for an hour -regularly skimming off any scum then let it sit for 3 hours before straining) or, the cheats way, buy good quality pre-made; 3 medium lemons; 1 cup long grain rice; 300g chicken breast fillets, trimmed and chopped; 2 eggs and finely

shredded mint leaves...Finely grate rind from 1 lemon then juice lemon...using a citrus zester, zest 2nd lemon then juice lemon...juice remaining lemon.

Bring stock and lemon rind to the boil in a saucepan over high heat...reduce heat to med-high then add rice...simmer, stirring occasionally for 15 minutes or until rice is just tender...add chicken...cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 4 minutes or until chicken is cooked through.

Remove from heat and add lemon juice...stir to combine...lightly beat eggs in a heat proof jug...add 1/2 cup hot stock mixture, whisking to combine...slowly add egg mixture to stock mixture in a steady stream, stirring, until combined...taste and season then ladle into bowls...serve topped with lemon zest and mint.

November showcases two of our favourite and very popular artists Sara Paxton and David Hobday.Sara Paxton is an artist with extraordinary insight into colour. Her work covers a wide range of subject matter and her confident approach gives results that are visually exciting. Working in oils, Sara uses various techniques- building the colour and light with layers and washes to give a luminous, transparent effect, and in other instances using thicker strokes of paint applied with palette knife or brush to build texture, shape and form.

Throughout his working life as a marine biologist David Hobday pursued a fascination for working with glass. It is no surprise that his work conveys an intimate known of and inspiration from the marine environment. David's glass involves extensive use of kiln-formed or fused and slumped glass. Join Sara and David with drinks on Saturday 31 October for their Exhibition opening 2 4 pm.

The Barwon Heads CFA has responded to 38 call outs so far this year. While it was a relatively quiet time over winter, the hot days in October triggered a number of related and unrelated incidents which the Brigade turned out to.

The hot weather of the past month promises to be a precursor of the summer ahead, and we are all busily refreshing our knowledge to be ready for the fire season. Every Tuesday evening and Sunday morning members of the Brigade are participating in training of a range of activities. From drafting water to refill the tanker, to managing dehydration on hot days to practising what to do should a bushfire directly burn over the fire truck (this is called entrapment), it is mandatory that we refresh these skills so we can properly support communities over the summer.

Warmer weather means BBQ season which is a wonderful part of summer. We have been called out to incidents in the past, either due to leaking gas bottles or the BBQ fare itself catching fire. Please do check your connections carefully before you fire up the barbie, and once going, never leave it untended.

In order to make ourselves available for strike teams or local bush fire incidents, we have to have completed a number of training courses and earlier in the month, a training exercise was held with all the Brigades on the Bellarine taking part. Brigades were divided into two strike teams and members took it in turn to participate in two different exercises. These included a Breathing Apparatus exercise that involved finding 'casualties' in a smoke filled room and a size-up run through to identify hazards such as asbestos and solar panels on the roof. Rural Ambulance Victoria also attended and conducted a demonstration on how CFA members can assist paramedics. The second exercise focused on asset protection on an urban and rural interface, i.e. houses backing on to farmland with an approaching fire, and included the entrapment procedure.

On Sunday 8 November, there Will be a Barwon Heads Fire

Brigade Open Day.

We'll be welcoming visitors from 10am to 1pm and look forward to showcasing our brigade, equipment and members. Kids of all ages are welcome, and if anyone is interested in learning more about volunteering with the CFA, this is your chance.

Barwon Heads Fire Brigade has a Facebook page informing you of local community safety events and insights to what the Brigade is up to. Make sure you jump on and give us a like to follow what we are up to!

The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade is seeking new members. If you are interested in learning new skills, meeting new people and being part of a team that contributes to the safety of our community, please call Captain Helen Wood on 0438 507 273, or email Secretary Kira Crawford-Brooks on [email protected]

2015 POPPY APPEAL NO CHALLENGE TOO GREAT FOR OUR RSL SUB-BRANCH RSL Appeals organisers at all Sub-Branches around Victoria are gearing up for the annual Poppy Appeal, with more than half a million poppies expected to be sold. Ocean Grove – Barwon Heads Sub-Branch is ready for this year’s Poppy Appeal, with a committed group of volunteers manning three stations in Ocean Grove and two in Barwon Heads. “The Poppy Appeal is a cause that resonates with all Australians and each and every person who purchases a poppy feels a great sense of pride in wearing it in the lead up to and on Remembrance Day,” said RSL Victoria Appeals Manager, Peter Smith. “Not only does buying and wearing a poppy show respect for our country’s fallen heroes, but it helps raise vital funds to assist past and present servicemen and women and their dependents in times of need. Poppies were among the first plants to bloom in the devastated battlefields of France and Belgium, and since 1921 they have been used in remembrance of those who fell during times of war. As a wave of young veterans are finding themselves and their families in need of assistance, it is now as important as ever to donate to the Poppy Appeal, according to Mr Smith. Mr. Smith went on to explain that the help provided to veterans varies dramatically and is tailored to each and every case, but it can include direct financial assistance, medical expenses and the provision of mobility aids, home maintenance, food vouchers, education of dependents, funeral arrangements, the transition to civilian employment and advocacy to help secure compensation. Graham Fisher, President Ocean Grove – Barwon Heads RSL Sub-Branch acknowledges the phenomenal commitment shown by the members and volunteers who time and time again, make the Poppy Appeal such a success. “Year in, year out, our community rallies together to support the Poppy Appeal in the lead up to Remembrance Day. I would like to thank the local community from the very outset who support our Sub-Branch and wear their poppy with pride.” he said. Ocean Grove selling stations will be located outside Safeway’s in Shell Rd, Pharmasave Pharmacy in the Main Street and outside LiquourLand in the Coles supermarket carpark. Barwon Heads have two selling stations, APCO Service Station as you enter / leave the town and the Barwon Heads Newsagent in Hitchcock Ave. With the amalgamation of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads RSL sub-branches in 2011, the sub-branch and meeting place is located in Ocean Grove, the RSL club is aware of how important it is, to include Barwon Heads community in not only the appeal collections, but also the services both Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day. The Remembrance Day Services this year will be held at: Barwon Heads Community Hall, Hitchcock Ave and the service will begin at 10.45 am. Ocean Grove Cenotaph, Ocean Grove Park service will begin at 10.45 am

BARWON HEADS’ STREETSWhenever I walk down a local streetI take great care where I put my feet.and I watch for the gobsand the doggies big jobsthat lie there in piles, some sloppy, some neat,Waiting for people to squidge with their feet.and I tiptoe aroundwith my eyes on the groundand wonder what horror I’m next going to meet.

And the harder I look, I give you my word, the more I seem drawn to the tiniest turd, and the dogs see me coming and say, “Here’s a sap, let’s nip ‘round the corner and have a good crap. He’s wearing those shoes that have crinkly soles, with lots of small ridges and dozens of holes, and if we distract him by having a piddle, nine times out of ten he’ll tread slap in the middle”

There’s nothing more pleases a dogs simple witThan to hear the familiar cry of “Oh sh**!”

BARKING DOGSWe have a chronic barking dog problem. It wakes us all up early, sometimes 4am!It barks on and off all day and into the evening.

The owner takes no action.

Neighbour is tired of her child waking her up very early in the morning and wants to ‘dob them in.’

First, it’s an offence to let a dog bark in our area as per the City of Greater Geelong website;

“Nuisance animalsNuisance animals are defined in the Domestic Animals Act 1994.The Domestic Animals Act 1994 defines a nuisance animal as one that:~ injures or endangers the health of any person, or~ creates a noise, by excessively barking or otherwise, which persistently occurs or continues to such a degree or extent that it unreasonably interferes with the peace, comfort or convenience of other people in any other premises

If you're affected by an animal creating a nuisance and you feel comfortable you may want to first contact the owner and advise them of your concerns.

If this doesn't resolve the issue, contact Councils Animal Management Unit for advice or assistance.”

Report a barking dogIf you're affected by a barking dog, first contact the owner and advise them of your concerns. If this doesn't resolve the issue we may investigate and take appropriate action. You will need to tell us:~ Exactly where the barking dog lives - simply stating "down the road" or "over the back fence somewhere" does not help us to investigate your complaintHas the dog barked before?~ If so, you will be asked for more information~ Details of the barking including frequency, duration, reason for barking etc~ Dog owner's reaction when barking occurs~ Any further comments~ Your full name - we need your name to send you a barking diary for completion over a two week period; please note that we are unable to investigate anonymous reports~ Your contact details (email or phone)~ Your addressThis information will be kept confidential.

Alternatively you may wish to contact the Customer Service Team or visit the website http://www.geelongaustralia.com.au

Doggie Etiquette

Etiquette for ownersAs pet owners, we have a responsibility to manage our pets and ensure good behavior in public. Gentle, pain-free methods are essential to training dogs and helping them bond with their owners. Being gentle, though, doesn’t mean allowing or sugar-coating bad manners (“He’s so excited to see you!” “She doesn’t know her own strength”). Cultivating appropriate behavior in our dogs paves the way for pleasant relations and peaceful coexistence among dog owners and non-owners alike. Read on!Be aware of other peoples’ space. Keep your leashed dog close to you and stay alert to others using the path/park/footpath. Your leash should be slack but short enough to prevent Fido from contacting or jumping on passers-by. Even if people say, “It’s okay,” your dog needs to learn to behave appropriately in public. Some people dislike dogs, others are frightened of them, still others may simply prefer well-mannered dogs! A well-trained dog and a considerate handler set a great example of responsible ownership to their communities, and ensure that dogs will continue to be welcome there.Be aware of other peoples’ feelings. If your dog does something that upsets someone else (jumping up, running after them, barking at them, etc.), apologize to that person and take measures to prevent the situation from re-occurring. Do this even if your dog’s behavior appeared benign in nature. Shrugging it off as an overreaction or a personal slight will not improve your dog’s behavior and may negatively impact your reputation in the community.

WHAT'S COOKING AT THE LOBSTER POT?

Word about the HoodOn the 15th of October, Meg, Grainne and Kasun of BirdLife Australia's Beach-Nesting Birds team travelled down to Barwon Heads to band previously unbanded hooded plovers along 13th Beach.Barwon Coast staff, Cher and Brett had been on the beach early to locate the birds which we planned to band. The unbanded pair which usually nest between 29W & 30W were conveniently located near the access and each proved quite straightforward to catch. They've been banded 'CR' (in honour of Cher) and 'SN' (after Brett's nickname 'Singe').

This pair now have their first nest for the season, fingers crossed for them!Further along 13th Beach, past access 36W, NK & his unbanded partner were found. She also proved to be another straightforward capture and has been banded 'XU' (for eXUberant).Banding hoodies allows the Beach-nesting Birds team to identify individual birds, follow their movements and learn more about them through their life cycle, eg their partner, age, sex, territory.

PC & EH have their second nest for the season at 40W.

Success for the hoodies depends on everyone. Please, if you are visiting any beach where hoodies are nesting, respect the signs at the breeding areas.Walk your dog elsewhere, but if that's impossible, keep them on a leash at all times and walk at the waters edge.Never walk at high tide as the nests are on the sand just above the high-water mark.

Bee with a backpack… of the sensor variety Great Victorian Fish Count @ Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary5 December 2015

What?Come and join Friends of the Bluff and Parks Victoria as we undertake the annual

Great Victorian Fish Count on Saturday 5 December 2015.Why?

The Great Victorian Fish Count is an opportunity to get a snapshot of a number of commonor interesting fish species living in Victorian waters. This data allows an estimation of thestructure of fish communities around the coast and comparisons with previous and future

fish counts taken at the same time each year. This year the theme is “Fish on the Move”, looking at how fish populations are changing as a result of shifts

in water temperature and climate. We are partnering with Redmap (http://www.redmap.org.au/) to record species that are found outside of their historic range.

Where? The Great Australian Fish Count has taken place within Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary for the ten years,

and is one of only 4 sites in Victoria that have had continuous monitoring. The actual location for the survey will depend on conditions on the day and further information will be provided on site.

When?Meet in the top car park at the Bluff (27W) at 12:00pm for a safety briefing and further

information. We aim to be in the water by 12:45pm and wrap up by 13:45pmWho?

The fish count is open to all competent snorkelers. All equipment including wetsuits, mask, snorkel, and fins, must be provided by participants. Fish ID and recording slates will be provided.

Children are welcome to participate under full supervision of parents or guardians.Volunteers should register their intent to participate with [email protected]

I was standing in the bluff recently, questioning the veracity of global warming as the smell of cooking wafted in from Mc Murdo

Base on another particularly gelid antarctic blast, when I realised that the survivors of the ill-fated Earl of Charlemont has unwittingly instituted a 150 year old tradition of tourists trampling our dunes. I’ve noticed that there is a lot of sand in Barwon Heads, in fact the dunes are basically full of the stuff. Now sand is basically the pulverised ephemera of rocks, shells and assorted carapaces and exoskeletons; soaked in salt, dumped on a beach and blown into large piles. And when I consider the searing reflective qualities and the dubious water retention properties, I wonder why anyone would choose a sand dune as its preferred place of existence. But sand dunes are remarkable habitats with a discreet vegetation type. The long tendrils of the hairy spinifex (Spinifex sereceus) are so important in dune stabilization but more so in dictating the shape of the dunes. And I love the tumbleweed seed heads. The wonderful cushion bush (Leucophyta brownii) is another common feature of the dunes. Modified to with stand wind and salt, the springy ‘cushions’ are made up of hundreds of thin, silvery-white branchlets interwoven to form the distinctive shape. The leaves are actually reduced to tiny flaps and in spring the whole bush is covered in yellow button flowers. And then there is the dunes’ natural garnish, sea celery (Apium prostratum). This small and tasty plant has a fragility that defies the harsh shifting conditions in which it lives. The spreading stem of celery-like leaves have a peppery (and oddly salty) taste and hides dozens of innocuous green flowers. A few inches of sand trapped in a Bluff crevice is enough habitat to sponsor 4 species of these remarkable plants.I really admire dune plants.

Barwon Coast is a C o m m i t t e e o f Management appointed by the State Government with responsibility for the

management of 13km of coastal crown land from 7W Collendina to 42W Blue Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13thBeach. Our Committee members are local residents appointed with consideration of the skills and experience that they have to offer in the management of this important piece of coastline.BARWON HEADS PROMENADE UPDATEIn late May this year sections of the Barwon Heads Seawall were damaged by storm events, revealing significant voids under the promenade; this resulted in about 200 metres of the promenade being closed due to concerns for public safety.Since the failure of sections of the seawall in May, Barwon Coast has worked continuously toward a solution that would enable the promenade to be opened as soon as is practical.

Rebuilding of the seawall commenced on Monday 28th September and is progressing well with approximately one quarter of the wall rebuilt at the time of writing. In the interest of public safety, all visitors to the area are asked to take note of the site signage and only walk as directed.Particularly be advised that at times the riverbank beach maybe closed to limit risk to pedestrians.Barwon Coast is confident the rebuild of almost 200 lineal metres of the seawall and the promenade path can be completed prior to the summer season.BARWON HEADS CARAVAN PARK – HOWARD HARMER OVAL PRECINCT MASTER PLANBarwon Coast, in partnership with the Barwon Heads Football Netball Club, has commenced work on a Master Plan for the oval precinct to guide improvements over the next 5 to 10 years. Consultants Thompson Berrill Landscape Design have been engaged by Barwon Coast to facilitate community engagement and the development of the plan.Preliminary consultation has been undertaken with the Club, Caravan Park, and members of the community and it is expected that a draft plan will be available for full community comment by mid to late December. LOCAL SCHOOL ACKNOWLEDGEDCongratulations to the Barwon Heads Primary School for their work on the Let Our Sea Be Plastic Bag Free Barwon Heads project. The school was a

finalist at this year’s Victorian Coastal Councils Coastal Awards , where Minister Nevil le acknowledged the work they had done towards sustaining o u r l o c a l environments. We would also like to acknowledge and thank all state f o r t h e i r commi tment to

winners across the state for their commitment to improving our natural resourcesCRAB NETTING BANPlease be aware that due to the Rock Lobster closed season, hoop nets must not be used on the ocean side of the Barwon Heads Bridge from the 15th September to the 15th November. Hoop nets may still be used on the inland side of the bridge at any time for the collection of sand crabs. To report illegal fishing call 13FISH (13 4374).LIVING WITH OUR WILD LIFESpring time means all animals are on the move and it is unfortunate that we are experiencing impacts to our wildlife from domestic animals. Recently we collected a juvenile Blue-tongue Lizard that had been attacked by a dog. Unfortunately the injuries sustained were beyond repair and as a consequence, the animal was euthanased. Please be mindful of where your dogs and cats are, in particular when out along the coast and along trails, keep your dogs close to you so you can control them before they impact on our wildlife that is just trying to get on with its daily activities. Spring time also sees a lot of chicks down on the ground. Should you come across a chick on the ground, please take the time to look around to try to find the nest. If safe to do so, pop the chick back in the nest. If there is no nest visible, pop the chick into a temporary nest structure at the site and monitor from a distance throughout the day to see if the parents come back to feed them. Most chicks do not need to go into care. By providing alternative solutions, the parents can successfully raise the chicks, but we need to be mindful to keep our dogs and cats away for this to happen.I encourage you to contact Barwon Coast to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning 5254 1118. Things are heating up at the BHCC. The temperature for one. It’s starting to get warmer as spring has arrived and there are so many more riders each day. We are getting a stack of riders each day as the excitement for the B2B builds.Another thing that is heating up is the talk about the annual Christmas party where we ride from house to house, eating our way around town. It is scheduled for the evening of Saturday 28th November. There have been numerous meetings planning the route as we take the BHCC kids around town from venue to venue. Look out for all of us around the streets on that night and please give us plenty of room as there will be loads of kids. Read all about the evening in the next issue of Talking Heads. B2B – Bridge to Bridge

Planning is well under way for our B2B ride scheduled for April next year. We are riding from Sydney Harbour Bridge to the Barwon Heads bridge, which is more than 1000km in over eight days. Nine riders have committed: Nev, Simon, Mikey, Lawrie, Graeme, Damien, James, Greg and myself. The bus has been booked and we have recruited Peter to drive the bus. We are looking for a trailer (about 5x7). Accommodation is currently being planned. We even have spreadsheets for stuff that make it look really professional. A team is looking at the marketing side of things too. We are currently sourcing sponsorship from local businesses and if interest continues, we may be offering companies the chance to sponsor a day of the ride. We are considering a few fundraisers too – maybe a sportsmans night and also a sausage sizzle. We also have the live recording of the Grupetto Show.

BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB

Celebrating 43 years

BARWON HEADSBOWLING CLUB

Into November, the Pennant season is off and running and overall our teams are doing O.K. Some teams would like to be doing better, and some maybe doing better then expected.

Great to see Adam, Darius, Russell, Muriel and George donning the Barwon Heads colours for the first time. We wish you well and hope you enjoy bowling at Barwon Heads.

Talking about Clubs and Club allegiance one of our very senior and respected bowlers spent her youth, (some years ago) barracking for and watching Hawthorn train at Glenferrie oval. For 40 years they rarely won a game. For the last 3 years she has worn a permanent smile as Hawthorn can do no wrong and her childhood faith has been repaid.

She has also taken many a Tattslotto ticket off people who should know better than bet against Hawthorn.

A bowling club has many different people with many different interests, some stranger than others. One of my favourites is a lady who loves to buy and sell cars. The story can wait a while as it just get’s better as time goes by.

Back to bowls and with names like Wise, Allen, Henderson, Bannister performing on Saturdays and Walter, Green, and Leonard etc doing their stuff on Tuesdays, things are looking O.K. and hopefully we can have a successful and enjoyable season. Until next time, good bowling.

Grupetto ShowThe Grupetto Show, hosted by Adam Kelsall (the know it all), Billy-Jo Shearsby (the has been) and Phil Anderson (the legend) was filmed at Café

thMaritana on Sunday 25 October and the entry fees will go to our designated B2B charity of 'Give Where You Live'. It was a terrific night and thanks to Greg for putting it all together with some help from Graeme and Wiggle. Great work on the new BHCC t-shirts too Greg. Nice design from resting team member Guyza - thanks mate. For more info, go to http://www.grupettoshow.com.au

Bicycle Network Surveys

thOn Sunday 8 November, the BHCC will be collecting cycling data for Bicycle Network. There will be two collection points; on the Breamlea bike path and also on the bike path between the bridge and The Dunes. Look out for us and ring your bell as you pass or give us a cheer. That's it for November. Stay safe and please remember to give us cyclists plenty of room when you pass.See you on the road, Andy McNeilly

Pig! Pig!The other day on a ride, I was speeding down a narrow, twisting, mountain road. Then along comes a man who was driving very slowly uphill toward me, honking his horn and shouting at me."PIG! PIG!!" he yelled. "PIG! PIG!!"So I flipped him the finger and shouted back some things I dare not repeat as I buzzed by him.Still thinking about this awful man and his shouting, I turned the corner and promptly collided with a pig.

The Bellarine Relay for Life will be held on Saturday Nov 7 and Sunday Nov 8 at Co l lend ina Recrea t ion Reserve in Ocean Grove. Last year we had 751 people participate and raised an amazing $90,000 for Cancer Council. This will be the 5th year a Relay has been held on the Bellarine and we encourage the community attend. You can become involved by joining a team, attending the opening ceremony at midday Saturday, the Candlelight Ceremony at 8.30pm and the Closing Ceremony at 11.30am Sunday, coming along to listening to the entertainment. We especially invite Survivors and Carers to take part in the opening lap of the Relay. JESS ELLWOOD, new member on the Committee says “I got involved in the Relay For Life this year because I feel as though giving my time to help this event be as fun and as successful as possible is my way of honouring friends and family that have battled cancer. I have been involved in previous Relay For Life events as a performer, however this is my first time on the committee. My role as entertainment coordinator sees that I organise entertainment for the event which can include music, magic and any other sort of fun. Some of this year’s bands have previously played at relay for life and they include Andrea Robertson, Don Fisher, Jamie Pye and Ska Bang. Some new local talent gracing the stages are- Matilda Hassall and The Hustle. Dazzling Dan The Magic Man will also be on the stage on Saturday night so we have fun for the whole family!”Artist below is- JAMIE PYEHave you been involved in other Relay for Life events?“I've had the pleasure of performing at Relay for Life a few times, as well as attending too! Every year it seems to have the same great vibes as the year before (if not better!) and is always a very enjoyable time. The sound on stage is fantastic and I love how it can travel right around the field, being heard by just about everyone! I try my best to be a part of the event every year as there's always good people, a great atmosphere and of course it's all for a fantastic cause.” Jamie is a 19-year-old guitarist from the Bellarine. His style is acoustic/instrumental/finger-style, presenting techniques such as percussive beats and fingerboard tapping alongside various different tunings on the guitar. He draws from many influences such as Kim Churchill, Daniel Champagne, John Butler, Ziggy Alberts, Woodlock and many more inspiring musicians. Since finishing his last year of secondary school, Jamie is learning, practicing and surrounding himself with jazz music, hoping to study music further, acquiring a more well-rounded and knowledgeable set of skills that can influence his own playing.

What do all people who exercise have in common?A wish. What is this wish?To be healthy and in control. Exercise gives us this no matter at what age we take it up. In fact age does not come into it at all (except for your trainer who has to know your biological age in order to monitor your heart rate).Exercise is a great equaliser and does not discriminate on any traditional grounds; ageism, sexism or any other ism!During exercise, all our personal and social determinations fall away. We are free, strippethe bare essentials (sometimes literally), sweating and breathing hard, making a concerted effort of body and mind to meet a challenge. This is life at its most basic. This is how life was from the earliest form of human existence, when prehistoric man and woman had to battle the elements. For an hour or so of our lives, we can be our prehistoric ancestors, free from the tyranny of technology and the pace of modern life.We can go back to the basics of existence,; our body and our mind running in sync like a well tuned instrument. In the end, it is about living or ‘Joie de Vivre’ as the french would say.So, on the next beautiful day in paradise, let’s take up the challenge of enjoying what we are;a mind and a body.Lets exercise the two together with joy.

young lads in the first XI it's an exciting time for the club and a season of solid development of these young guys will see us have some success. All three of the boys named above have started well this season with James Hodder as the new wicket keeper doing a grand job behind the stumps. In his first 115 overs in A Grade he has not conceded a single bye and with scores of 24 and 32not out he's averaging 56 with the bat.

On a fashion note, I had a very dear very major sponsor ask me to mention that he thought a senior player wasn't suitably attired as he was playing with his shirt hanging out. He asked me to mention this and I said I'd try, and now I have. Hands up if this bloke needs a chill pill?

The annual ladies day was held on Cox plate day.

The day is held annually and raises money for cancer research. This year the money was to be donated to Peter Mac. The day is traditionally a man free zone with this year's only concession to the men being made late in the day when they were allowed in from the cold afternoon to watch the race. At this point in the day the ladies were either too compassionate or simply no longer bothered by the presence of the lads and they let them stay in the rooms. A smashing

evening of great community interaction then ensued and I'm sure that all who were gathered had a terrific time. Clarissa Hyland, Sonia Lazzaro and Peta Walter did a magnificent job of organizing the day and the club thanks them and congratulates them for the day. The only real issue was when Sonia's husband Vin wore a red hat into the rooms after the game.

Red hats are not classed as suitable attire unless worn by the gentle folk from the club across the river. Vin was roundly admonished and extremely contrite. Thanks to all the ladies who supported the day and have done so for some years now. I'll have a final tally for the donation to Peter Mac in next month's ed.

Two of highlights of the day were the two ladies who agreed to go halves in an auction item and then sat on opposite sides of the room bidding against one another, and the auctioneer asking the room who thought that the next item for auction was worth having and then taking bids from every hand that went up.

With games being played on both ovals again this season there is a much busier vibe in the rooms and a few more people around so come on over. You're more than welcome. See you down there. Matt Dunell

Welcome aboard BHCC flight 1516. We'll not be cruising at all this flight. It's all hard work for the entire trip and no passengers.

We have a long trip ahead of us and your crew will be busting the chops to make it a success so enjoy the ride.

The season began with a pretty mixed weekend when A grade, C grade and one of the Under 13 teams all lost and the club was led by a fighting win to B Grade when they defended a low total, the under 17s and under 15 and Under 13 Goddard also had wins. The juniors are in grading games so their first few are all one day fixtures and they will soon start the two day matches where the competitive nature of the game is more testing.

The second round saw a home game for the A Grade where we had three of last years under 17s feature prominently in a good win. Darcy Hewitt scored a fine 37, James Hodder scoring a nice 32 batting in the tail and Jack Johnstone opening the bowling with a fine spell. With a number of other
