NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Morristown, NJ

As Fall is upon us, the leaves crunch under our feet, scarves and hats are being brought down from their storage boxes, soon we will be brought into the Christmas Vortex. I see it in the shopping malls already. The pressure; do we have our gifts? Our Christmas lights? It’s not even Thanksgiving and already we anticipate our winter holiday. And yet everyone knows that Christmas is only the beginning of the real honest cold…the January – March cold.

But for this small band of St. Peter’s Christians, our march towards Christmas will mean something quite different. We will be entertained, though not taken-in with the tinsel and the gifts. We are waiting to dance round the great happening: God became man in flesh. We will be pondering that this baby was poor, born under such disturbing circumstance,

threatened by death before even taking his first breath. We will be looking at Herod and wondering what drove him to such fear and hatred, at Mary in awe of her bravery and strength, at Joseph who marches on to do what is right – even unto this little baby who endlessly calls us to see that God is Love – and Love is universal, indiscriminate – Love which explodes old barriers and prejudice and inconveniences. Love which makes our mouths drop with awe.

Sometimes we may think we have to do all the work to practice our piety: But not so for our small band at Miller and Maple this winter. We need only be together, listen to the music, hear the scripture and see the faces of our friends…and suddenly, as if out of nowhere… God will be present in a new way among us.

In the Lamb,

The Reverend Janet Broderick, Rector

2017 Stewardship Campaign

The Stewardship Committee examined the following questions recently about who we are as a church community:

• Who are we helping? • How many people are involved? • How is the mission of Jesus Christ being furthered? • Where has God been doing amazing things in our midst? • How are our resources being respected and wisely used?

The answers to these questions were gathered and the results published in the booklet “Why Give to St. Peters?: Love Your Neighbor as Yourself.”

The Stewardship Committee hopes you enjoy reading this booklet that was mailed to all parish households in October. It is meant to be a springboard for conversation about what St. Peter’s means to you, your family, the members of our church, and the members of our local community.

It is also meant to inspire thought and conversation about what giving financially to St. Peter’s means to you personally. This year we are engaging in an “all-member canvass.” Stewardship Committee canvassers are calling on every member of St. Peter’s to talk about our mission and work as a congregation and its role in our personal life. We invite everyone to make a financial pledge to support our parish and our ministries going forward into 2017.

“Ingathering” Sunday is November 20th. We ask that all members return their pledge card by this date, either by mail or by placing the card in the offering plate on any Sunday leading up to Ingathering.

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:37-39

Our Fall is off to a great start—our Alpha Course and Parenting Courses bring joy and knowledge (and wonderful food!) to so many, our Sunday School and Youth Programs are up and running, and our weekly Evensong sings God’s praises every Wednesday. It’s truly exciting to be a part of all that St. Peter’s has to offer!

And it’s even more exciting to see so many others becoming a part of our lives here. Our baptism on September 18th welcomed two of God’s newest family members with love and celebration, and we’ve got a full house planned for our next baptism on November 6th! St. Peter’s is moving along with the breeze of the Holy Spirit, calling our community near and far with the Good News of God and with the loving service of God’s hands and feet—and that’s all of you, our beloved Church.

As our year deepens, we continue to offer activities and classes to feed your soul. For Adult Forum on Sundays at 9:00 am beginning October 30th, and running through the seasons of Advent and Christmas, I’ll be leading a class on the Book of Revelation. It’s possibly the most misunderstood book of Scripture, and arguably the most worthwhile to try and understand! Whatever you’ve thought about it in the past, rest assured that the Good News is abundant. I welcome all of you, your questions, and your opinions as we dive in.

We’re getting close to the holiday season—the anticipation of Advent, the joy of Christmas, the bright light of Epiphany. I pray that St. Peter’s will be a place for us to think not of presents but of THE present—the now, the moment, every note sung and every prayer offered. There is much to look forward to, it’s true, but there are so many things in the here and now that are worth appreciating and living into. Advent is meant to slow us down; we’re meant to breathe deeply, hear the voice of the angel as he speaks to Mary and to Joseph and to us; our walk is a slow one, moving with hope and faith alongside the Holy Family as they make their way to Bethlehem. As members of the Body of Christ, as ministers in God’s service and for God’s love, I pray that we all find good work to do on the way, and many companions to share it! And I thank all of you, always, for being my companions in this place.

With love in and through Christ,

The Reverend Susanna Cates, Assisant Rector

Assistant Rector

Grace and Peace to You!

Altar Guild

Each week, the men and women of the Altar Guild bless our congregation and church with a beautiful sanctuary. They polish all of the silver, fill the candles, dust and sweep, vest the chalice, and wash and iron all of the linens. They set up and clean up every service, including baptisms, weddings and funerals. The flowers you see on the altars each week arrive in buckets each Saturday, and are then carefully arranged for placement on the high altar and the altar in the chapel.

The work of the Altar Guild is a quiet, calming ministry--even meditative. Directress Jennifer Dyer says, “There is something very special about being quietly in church on a Saturday morning, when for a short time the world can be left outside.”

Altar Flower DedicationsYou may honor the memory of a loved one, or show your thanksgiving for a birthday, anniversary, baptism or marriage by making an altar flower dedication. The cost is $50, and your dedication will be listed in the Sunday bulletin of the date of your choosing.

After Sunday services, flowers from the altar are delivered to people in the parish who are homebound, ill, or are otherwise in need.

You may make an altar flower dedication online at www.stpetersmorristown.org/altarflowers, by completing an Altar Flower Dedication Form located on the main bulletin board across from the Reception Desk in Parish Hall and returning it to the church office, or by sending an email to [email protected].

If you are interested in learning more, and would like to become part of this ministry that makes our sanctuary so lovely each Sunday, please contact Jennifer Dyer at [email protected].

Music at St. Peter’s

Bells & BBQ

On September 10th, a beautiful sunny afternoon, parishioners and passers-by were treated to the sounds of the St. Peter’s carillon played by guest artist Lisa Lonie. The varied program featured everything from a suite of songs from Mary Poppins and Henry Mancini’s Moon River to a pair of songs by Eric Satie. Concertgoers were able to see Lonie performing high in the tower on a big screen on the Great Lawn while enjoying a feast of hamburgers and hotdogs. Children and babies played in the grass and many people stopped to learn about the carillon, and about St. Peter’s. Lisa Lonie is University Carillonneur at Princeton, as well as the carillonneur at St. Thomas’ Church, Whitemarsh and at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Philadelphia, which houses the oldest carillon (1882) in North America. Known for her musical wit and creative programming Ms. Lonie is one of only two North American carillonneurs invited to perform at the famed 2017 Bok Tower Carillon Festival (Lake Wales, Florida). Lisa is currently collaborating with Minneapolis composer, Matt Riley, on orchestrated performance tracks to be played with live carillon.

The Afterschool on South

Our Sunday School is off to a great start this year. Our students are thoroughly enjoying their Spark Story Bibles as we follow the lectionary from week to week.

We had a wonderful time at our Fall Family Fun Day in the Undercroft on October 22nd despite the rainy weather!

We listened to stories of Ruth, David and Ezekiel, made playdough skeletons, played games and carved pumpkins!

As we head into the Christmas season, the children are looking forward to telling the story of Jesus’ birth at our Epiphany Pageant on Friday, January 6th at 6:00 pm in the church.

Sunday School News

Our program has been growing this Fall and we currently serve 38 children in pre-kindergarten through the 7th grade (22 students to go for a full house). The highlight of our day is recreation time – many World Cup soccer games are played on the Great Lawn throughout the week.

We want to say “thank you” to the many generous people who donated the large and varied selection of items for our Rummage Sale in September. Parents from our program helped sort and sell, and made some great purchases for themselves, too. We made almost $3,000 which will be used to offer tuition assistance.

We are also grateful to the Morristown Festival of Books for their support of our program this year. As literary partners, they offered each of our children a free book from the Festival, and $5,000 from the Festival book raffle will be donated to our program. Thank you! – Dee Klikier, Director

The Giving Tree

Yes, it’s that time of year again when we begin to gather names of residents in local senior living centers and Youth Consultative Services. By the end of November you will see a new Christmas tree, St. Peter’s Giving Tree, in the Parish Hall. This tree has a big job. Its main job, besides looking beautiful, is to attract your attention and encourage you to come close and take a look-see. It will be full of tags with names of residents and children and their “wish list” for a Christmas Gift.

This year we are instituting a new way of celebrating this major Outreach program. We are asking you to take a tag from the tree – or more than one – and return your gift on December 11th. We will have a Christmas Party in the Parish Hall on that day immediately following the 10:15 service when you can place your gift under the tree.

The gifts will be blessed and sent out to people with the love and prayers from the good folks at St. Peter’s.

Please reflect on this opportunity to be a true Magi and bring a gift to one of God’s children.
