Weekends call for adventure, and sometimes plans don’t come to life as originally expected... but that doesn’t mean that the weekend is lost. Finding small getaways close to the city can turn into a great adventure too. Even if it only means breakfast or a romantic lunch between the woods, no hike, no run, but great food and the best company right? It counts as a getaway for sure.

A Saturday or Sunday without nature don’t make sense at all... so we found a Sunday Funday like adventure paying a visit to this small coffee-bistro family style, only 40 minutes from the city! Its called Café Matilda’s, located in San Lucas Sacatepéquez.

Matilda’s beauty lies in an amazing playground between the shade of the canopy, with a side porch with a great view of the forest and some tables inside the vintage decorated cottage besides the chimney, and a corner playground specially designed for toddlers, isn’t that awesome?

Guatemala es el destino fotográfico del mundo y lo debemos dar a conocer ¡sin egoísmo alguno!

Bajo esa declaratoria creamos #ShutterGuatemala somos: Iván Castro Peña, José Manuel del Busto, Nelly Aguilar y Gabriela Thompson, y contamos el importante apoyo de INGUAT, en Junio emprendimos la aventura que nos a llevado a visitar siete de muchos destinos que son un “MUST” en todas las listas de viajeros interesados en conocer verdaderamente Guatemala y todas sus riquezas. Hasta la fecha hemos recorrido: Quetzaltenango, Antigua Guatemala, Retalhuleu, Panajachel, Cobán, Tikal y Chichicastenango.

Guatemala is THE photographic destination of the world and we need to share it openly! Under this statement and with very important support from INGUAT, we set out on an adventure that since June has taken us to visit seven of the many destinations that are a MUST on every travelers list if they really want to get to know Guatemala and its hidden treasures. We have been able to visit: Quetzaltenango, Antigua Guatemala, Retalhuleu, Panajachel, Cobán, Tikal and Chichicastenango.We’ve been sharing with over one thousand photographers and learning many valuable lessons from each other. Hemos compartido con mas de mil fotógrafos decididos a unirse al movimiento y juntos estamos aprendiendo todos de todos. En cada destino que visitamos se lleva a cabo un taller intensivo de dos días de fotografía mezclando teoría con práctica en los sitios mas emblemáticos de cada lugar. Fue increíble ver como en La Antigua llegaron mas de 270 fotógrafos de todas partes de Guatemala, desde Petén hasta Escuintla. No importó ni la lluvia ni el calor, y durante todo un fin de semana nos dedicamos todos a aprender y poner en practica lo aprendido. El objetivo de estos talleres ha sido fortalecer el movimiento fotográfico nacional, dar a conocer una imagen positiva de Guatemala por medio de las redes sociales, posicionar el movimiento #ShutterGuatemala y motivar a apropiarse y apoyar la marca país #VisitGuatemala.

workshop is held, complementing theory with practice in the most relevant attractions from each destination. Just in Antigua, more tan 270 photographers from all over Guatemala joined and committed the entire weekend to learn about photography and put to practice this knowledge. Neither the heat nor the rain stopped us from having a blast!

The objectives of these workshops have been to strengthen the photographic movement in Guatemala, transmit a positive image of Guatemala through social media, position the #shutterguatemala movement and motivate photographer and have them make their own the #VisitGuatemala country Brand.

A la vez también ha sido la excusa para que muchos salgan de sus casas a conocer Guatemala con el objetivo de aprender fotografía. Sin duda la pasión por la fotografía une, y muestra de ello fue la fundación de Clubes Fotográficos a partir de los talleres, y que a la fecha han crecido exponencialmente en número de socios y actividades al igual que en calidad de trabajo de sus miembros.

It has also been the excuse for many to leave home and explore Guatemala with the purpose of learning more about photography. The passion for photography with out a doubt brings us together, proof of that are the new photography clubs being organized as an effect of the workshops, and to see them grow in participation, activities and through the work of their members is with out a doubt very inspiring.

Escapar es difícil, pero a veces buscamos un sitio donde se pueda encontrar la mezcla perfecta de naturaleza, paz y un pedacito de cielo, y encontrarlo casi en medio de la ciudad, eso es ganarse la lotería. Entre las montañas de San José Pinula, entre un bosque verde con aroma a lluvia y un recuerdo a la paz de una vida pasada… pero dejemos la poesía por un lado. La aventura de el Tular empieza desde que parquean su carro en las afueras de la finca, y los recoge un camión Mercedes Benz del año 1959, y créanme se siente como si fueran a la guerra pero más como un guerrero de paz.

Me refiero a la paz porque la vista desde la parte trasera del camión es casi fotográfica, con la luz pasando por las crestas de los árboles que hacen pensar que la percepción de la realidad, ¿porqué tan cerca de la ciudad pero en un ambiente tan distinto? Porque es un regalito del Universo para nosotros.

Sometimes finding a Little Piece of Heaven near Guatemala City can feel like winning the lottery. Between the green emerald mountains with fresh scent to rain, that which reminds you of a peaceful afternoon from an other lifetime... wait, don’t go so fast… the adventure begins the moment when the crew from El Tular pick you up at the parking lot in this old truck, a Mercedes Benz from 1959, and no you are not going to war!.

The ride is short and the views are breathtaking with the light shining between the woods offering a curtain that plays with your perception. The area is amazing and so different from the city just like 6 kilometers away, this due to the fact that Guatemala has a lot of microclimates within.

El hotel se ve desde el camino de terracería, y se observan los cuatro búngalos de bambú con ese toque de belleza natural que hace pensar que están apartados de la civilización. Se bajarán del camión y al entrar a la recepción verán mesas de picnic en un espacio abierto, dónde sentirán la libertad de estar afuera, con un techo como única barrera con la naturaleza. Después está el bar con una terraza de madera y mesas bajo sombrillas, perfecto para sentarse junto a un buen libro, y alguien querido, para pasar un momento inolvidable.

Cuando se instalan en el área común, van a sentirse como de la realeza, puesto que el servicio al cliente es buenísimo, por ejemplo, el mesero que se llama Quique y no te va a dejar pasar sed ni de chiste, está tan capacitado que si no es un vaso de agua, les va a ofrecer una cerveza, una merienda o lo que se les ocurra para llevárselos en un abrir y cerrar de ojos. Lo mejor es un vaso de agua con una orden de tortillas, con el perfecto queso derretido y frijoles negros, ya saben la clásica refacción guatemalteca.

when you stop at the common area

you spot a couple of picnic tables

and no concrete walls, just the

freedom of an open space with a

rooftop, and the easy flow of fresh air

rumbling around creating a melody.

Outside there is a wood deck with a

cool bar offering the perfect place

to sit and relax with a book, a blanket

and a loved one by your side.

Hanging around the common area

you will feel like royalty due to the

fact that the costumer service is

awesome, for example the waiters

name is Quique, he wont let you finish

a drink without the offer of a refill, with

the list of beverage available, so he

will offer water, tea, coffee or a cold

beer, and whatever you pick he will

deliver within minutes. With your drinks

you can ask for an order of tortillas

hot out of the fire, with the perfect

melting cheese and black beans, the

ultimate Guatemalan snack.

SAN JOSE PINULA

La comida supera los estándares de cualquier Eco-hotel que conocen, y hasta le dan su lugar a los diferentes del grupo, ¡tienen menú libre de gluten y vegetariano! Pero lo mejor de todo es que la mayoría de sus ingredientes los obtienen de su huerto orgánico.

La energía del lugar es solar, entonces se podrán imaginar lo románticas que son las tardes con la perfecta luz baja, que les da la oportunidad de sentarse a ver las estrellas y darse cuenta que abundan, y esto es perfecto para compartir con sus amigos o familia, maravillándose del gran regalo que nos da el Universo, ese sentimiento inexplicable de sentirse enorme y pequeño al mismo tiempo. Cuando ya no puedan más con la experiencia podrán retirarse a sus cabañas de “Glamping”, dónde las camas son bastante cómodas y no tienen vidrio separándolos de la naturaleza, y es por eso que podrán dormir con la melodía de los animales de afuera, las ranas, las aves e incluso el sonido del viento entre los árboles. Al día siguiente despertarán renovados y con la mente tranquila y el cuerpo listo para la aventura, con el canto de los azulejos esperando a dar un espectáculo ante los ojos, acompañado de un desayuno de huevos y fruta en la terraza.

The food is way too good for our standards, and there is room

for the picky member of the group. For example, they will make

sure there is food for you if you are a vegetarian or allergic to

gluten, and best of all, a lot of the ingredients come from their

organic garden, so you can be sure your food is freshly picked

and harmless.

The light is powered by solar energy so the dimness provides

a romantic evening perfect a night of stars with your friends or

family, and the cool thing is that you can spend as long as you

want observing the greatest gift of the Universe, that feeling

of being so big and so small at the same time. When you get

overwhelmed by the experience you can retire to your Glamping

cottage, where the bunk beds are comfy and the windows don’t

have a glass, so you will fall asleep to the music of the Universe,

and wake up with a rested mind and body with the sound of

the blue jays waiting to make a show before your eyes when you

wake up go have some eggs and fruit around the deck. -30- -31-

Después de recargar combustible hay suficientes actividades al aire libre para no aburrirse en todo el día. Podrán escoger dar un paseo por los senderos, o escalar un árbol de 25 metros, y si eso no les place, también hay un área de tiro para arco y cuchillos. Por último hay una cancha de voleibol para compartir con los amigos, y hasta una tabla de equilibrio (Bacilonga) o una cuerda para hacer una competencia … vale la pena pasar el fin de semana por aquí… Get to Know Guate!

Las Cuevas de Candelaria están situadas en el complejo Candelaria en Raxruha, Alta Verapaz. El sistema de cuevas y ríos subterráneos permite a los visitantes adentrarse en parte del complejo y navegar a lo largo del río subterráneo de Candelaria en algunas de las cuevas. Es un hermoso entorno natural digno de muchas fotos instantáneas para todas las redes sociales.

The underground cave and river

system allows for visitors to enter

some of the complex and to

navigate along the underground

Candelaria River within some of

the caves. It is a beautiful natural

setting worthy of many social

media snapshots.

Guatemala no es ajeno a poseer hermosas cuevas y ríos navegables, pero las maravillas de este lugar van mucho más allá de un parque acuático de atracciones.

Candelaria ha sido reconocido por varios locales, así como por muchos arqueólogos, como posiblemente la entrada a Xibalbá (el inframundo maya). Las descripciones de Xibalbá dentro del Popol Vuh consisten en ríos subterráneos que conducen a cuevas oscuras. El cruce de caminos, la descripción del descenso, la cueva de los murciélagos (a la que se puede entrar) son todos indicadores que Candelaria es en realidad uno de los mundos más emblemáticos descritos por los mayas. Allí, en la parte inferior del camino empinado, es donde encontrarán a los Dioses de Xibalbá.

Guatemala is no stranger to beautiful caves and waterways, but the wonders of

this place go way beyond your average water amusement park.

Candelaria has been recognized by many locals, as well as many archeologists,

as possibly being the entrance to Xibalbá (the Mayan underworld). Xibalbás

description within the Popol Vuh is consistent with underground rivers that lead

to dark caves. The crossroads, the description of the descent, the bat cave

(which you may enter) are all indicators that Candelaria holds one of the most

iconic worlds described by the Maya. There, at the bottom of the steep road,

is where you would find the Lords of Xibalbá.

ALTA VERAPAZ

As you walk along the hiking trial

you can´t help but feel like you

are about to reach the infamous

crossing of four roads and about to

descend into the mystical rivers that

were described as leading to the

demise of Hun Hunahpú and Vucub

Hunahpú.

Of course you may now enter the

caves in a more relaxed manner,

you sit on a tube and let the current

of the river draw, you get handed

a flashlight so you may admire the

stalagmites and the ceiling of the

caves, which is pretty awesome. Still,

as soon as the sun hides behind the

thick cave walls, there’s an eeriness

that still sinks in, almost as if you’re

being lured in, and the first of the

four caves described in the Popol

Vuh comes to mind: “Thus they arrived

in the House of Darkness. There was

nothing but darkness inside that

house. Then the Xibalbans gathered

their thoughts (…)”

So even when you should follow the

usual directions of a common natural

reserve park (bring a bathing suit,

stay with a group, etc.) please take

note, you are also entering a sacred

realm so vast that its entire extent

has yet to be explored; word of the

wise hire a local guide and follow his

lead, you don´t want to tempt the

lords… Get to know Guate!

Al caminar a lo largo del sendero no podrán dejar de sentir como si estuvieran a punto de alcanzar el famoso cruce de los cuatro caminos y a punto de descender a los místicos ríos que fueron descritos como los conducentes al deceso de Hun Hunahpú y Vucub Hunahpú.

Por supuesto, estarán ingresando a las cuevas de una manera mucho más relajada, pues estarán sentados en un tubo (salvavidas) y mientras dejan que la corriente del río los lleve; les entregarán una linterna para que puedan admirar las estalactitas y el techo de las cuevas, que es bastante impresionante. No obstante, tan pronto el sol se esconda detrás de las gruesas paredes de la cueva, hay un escalofriante sentimiento de que están siendo atraídos hacia dentro, y la primera de las cuatro cuevas que se describen en el Popol Vuh les vendrá a la mente: “…

En seguida llegaron a la Casa Oscura. No había más que tinieblas en el interior de la casa. Mientras tanto, los Señores de Xibalbá discutían lo que debían hacer…”Si bien deben seguir las indicaciones habituales de un parque natural común (llevar traje de baño, permanecer en grupo, etc.) por favor tomen nota, que también estarán entrando en un reino sagrado tan vasto que no ha sido aún explorado en su totalidad; por lo que contraten a un guía local, y sigan sus indicaciones, no querrán tentar a los dioses...
