Geocaching at the Port Jervis

Free Library

Beverly Arlequeeuw, Director, Port Jervis Free Library Today’s libraries are not just for books, computers and

magazines – the Port Jervis Free Library now has its own geocache! In geocaching, participants obtain the location of a geocache from a geocaching website, use a GPS to arrive in the area of the cache, and then follow clues or simply hunt for the cache. There are nearly 500 caches waiting to be found within a 10 mile radius of our public library alone!

Libraries and geocaching seem to be made for each other. First, and I believe most importantly, they create a means of uniting the virtual and the real worlds, allowing people to explore both the library building and its resources. Second, they engage people and create community through real life experiences, such as the sudden discovery of a new idea or place that can be transformative. Third, they have a wide appeal across age groups and allow for family or team co-operation and interaction.

Come by the Port Jervis Free Library and give the sport of Geocaching a try!

Is Your Library

Participating?

Outside The Lines (OTL) week is September 11-16, 2017. Outside The Lines is an initiative encouraging libraries to show communities how important libraries are and how they have changed. Visit the Outside The Lines website to sign up.

Libraries that sign up (it’s free) agree to host one event or campaign during the week of September 11-16 that makes people think and talk about libraries in a new way. Libraries of all types and sizes are encouraged to participate.

Last year OTL received coverage in The Atlantic (US) and the Epoch Times (Canada).

Two archived webinars from PLA and TechSoup highlight the initiative’s impact with real-life examples.

Contact the OTL team at [email protected] with your questions.

Podcasting About Your Library

AL: The Scoop, June 29 In a new episode of the Dewey Decibel podcast, American

Libraries shares tips and tricks for starting a library podcast. American Libraries Associate Editor and Dewey Decibel host Phil Morehart talks with Steve Thomas, manager of the Buford–Sugar Hill branch of Gwinnett County (GA) Public Library, and Frank Collerius, manager of the New York Public Library’s Jefferson Market branch, about their library podcasts.

Librarians in Training:

A Smart MLS Program for Kids

School Library Journal, July 3, 2017 Jennifer Kelly Geddes writes, Julie Crabb is a woman

with a mission. Having just completed her own MLS, this children’s library associate at the Olathe Indian Creek

Library in Olathe, KS, wanted to give kids a peek at the inner workings of what professionals like herself do all day. To this end, she created a two-hour Mini Masters of Library Science workshop and accompanying booklet. “I thought the event would be a nice way to

combine my real world experience with a children’s library program,” she explains.

Learning to Read Produces

Brain Changes, Even in Adults

Scientific American, May 24; Science Advances, May 24 Gary Stix writes: “The brain did not evolve to read. It

uses the neural muscle of pre-existing visual and language processing areas to enable us to take in works by Tolstoy and Tom Clancy. Reading, of course, begins in the first years of schooling, a time when these brain regions are still in development. What happens, though, when an adult starts learning after the age of 30? A study published May 24 in Science Advances turned up a few unexpected findings.”
