It is customary for Jews to study one of the six chapters of Pirke Avot, the Ethics of our Ancestors, on each of the six shabbatot between the holidays of Passover and Shavuot. Found within the Mishnah, Pirke Avot is a collection of rab-binic sayings and ethical teachings. One of my favorite maxims is attributed to Yochanan ben Bag Bag, one of Hillel’s disciples, said to have lived in the first century. We read, “Ben Bag Bag used

to say, ‘Turn it, and turn it, for everything is in it.’” Most commentators explain that “turn it” refers to the Torah. Learning Torah is a lifelong endeavor, to be examined over and over again, discovering new meanings and nuances with every seasonal turn and with each life transition.

In this liminal period of reflecting on my years at Temple, I have been thinking about Ben Bag Bag’s words. On Friday evening, May 6, we will have an opportunity to celebrate and say good-bye. In late June, Ana, Micah, Jonas and I will move to Charlotte, North Carolina, where I will assume the position of Senior Rabbi for Temple Beth El.

I have loved serving as your rabbi. This congregation has been a second home for my family. We have experienced such warmth and love here—from the daily kindnesses to the outpouring of support when we welcomed our two chil-dren into the world. You have embraced us into your lives in times of celebration and mourning. You have supported my growth, patiently tolerated my mistakes and encouraged me to dream and achieve. Words cannot adequately express the appreciation and gratitude that I have for Temple’s clergy, staff and countless lay leaders who have taught me and helped me to become the rabbi that I am today. As I reflect upon my experiences here at Temple and ponder the next “turn” in my career and the life of my family, Ben Bag Bag’s words resonate loudly. Love Temple? Think About Being a Tour GuideTaking a tour of a beloved building or museum exhibit with a knowledgeable docent adds so much to the experience. At Temple, a devoted cadre of tour guides is eager to resume a full tour schedule now that the construction is almost done. We caught up with docent coordinator Kathy Aferiat (pictured right) to learn about Temple touring.

It’s exciting that Temple gives tours. How often and to whom? We give anywhere from 25-30 tours a year usually. The past year has been less due to the construction around Temple. Most of the requests come from churches—primarily Methodist churches who want to expose their confirmation students to the Christian roots in Judaism. We also have requests from Christian day schools, a community college, senior centers and even occasional requests from architects, artists and weavers.

What are some of the favorite stops on the tour? People love to see a Torah up close and marvel at the script. They also like to see the Olan Sanctuary with the beautiful Jewish symbols of the ark, ner tamid, menorah and Ten Com-mandments. The Memorial Room is interesting and gives the docent the opportunity to explain how Judaism honors the dead with yarhzeits, and recitation of the Kaddish. Adults like visiting the Archives with its interweaving of Temple history and Dallas history. I’m sure the new spaces at Temple will be a hit also.

What are visitors most curious about? Most questions are about the services, the Torah, holidays, and the ever popular “what do Jews think about Jesus?”

Tell us a little about your interest in leading tours. I have been the docent coordinator for the past seven years. I am passionate about Temple and Reform Judaism (especially since the shift toward more understandable tradition) and I love being able to share this with non-Jews. This is not to proselytize, as I always point out, but to increase knowledge and diminish misunderstandings, fears and prejudices. I believe it is always better to light candles rather than curse the darkness that is too readily out there.

We understand you are always welcoming new tour guides. What does it take to be a successful Temple docent? I think it is important to have a high comfort level and enthusiasm in explaining our traditions (symbols, holi-days, services). A docent needs to feel comfortable talking about Judaism and willing to say, “I don’t know but I’ll find out for you.” Most questions from non-Jews are fairly basic and if a docent gets stumped, she or he can always get back to the group later with the answer via e-mail to the group’s contact person. The DesigNThe chapel was designed as a com-plementary addition to our historic midcentury building by Howard Meyer and Max Sandfield. Described below by Cunningham Architects are some of the design features to enhance our experience of it.

wiNDows The frosted windows are composed of three different types of frosted glass, with each glass type hav-ing a slightly different transparency level. This mosaic glass is a modern interpretation of the art glass located throughout the existing building (spe-cifically seen throughout Olan Sanctu-

ary), but also serves to focus the gaze of chapel visitors toward the live oak trees inside the Nasher-Haemisegger Atrium and away from unwanted dis-tractions.

AcousTicAl ceiliNg pANels Commonly re-

ferred to as the “clouds,” they are wood panels supported by steel framing, which serve to reflect sound and music from the bimah to the seating area.

MATeriAls The primary material used throughout is white oak wood, selected for its lighter color tones and interest-ing grain pattern. The other materials, such as cork flooring, plaster ceiling and walls, miscellaneous dark bronze elements, were selected to match mate-rials and finishes used throughout both the original existing building as well as the new and renovated areas.

eNTrANce The primary entrance proces-sional into Stern Chapel was de-signed so as to require visitors to pass through the Tycher Gathering Space, through a new “connector” vestibule and into the chapel. This proces-sion leads visitors past a collection of existing, renovated and new building elements; reminding visitors of the history and growth of the building and congregation.

screeN wAlls AND BAlcoNy DeTAil The perfo-rations seen at the balcony guardrail and the screen walls primarily serve to provide acoustical openings in the wood, allowing a percentage of the sound to emanate from the bimah. The hole pattern is an interpolation and abstraction of images of nature and foliage (using advanced software to achieve this effect), helping to reinforce the connection with nature and more specifically the Nasher-Hae-misegger Atrium.

Awe iNspiriNgOpen your heart and mind to wonder in Temple’s beautiful new chapel.

Put away those hardhats. Stern Chapel, the architectural and psychic showplace of Temple’s expansion and renovation project, is open for business. Spiritual business that is—the real work of building our community from within as we experience prayer anew. We hope you’ve had a chance to experience the power of the new chapel over the past two weeks in our “month of firsts.” And by all means, don’t stop at one visit.

square footage26 x 86 feet Dimension of glass window wall

The ArT “Respecting Howard Meyer’s original ‘legacy of vision and light,’ the new chapel includes three major artist commissions: The ner tamid by Linda Ridway in collaboration with Jim Cinquemani, the ark doors by Suzanne Tick and the custom bimah furniture by Mira Nakashima. Intentionally, the medium of the artists references the materials used in the Olan Sanctuary but reinterprets the ritual pieces with a contemporary spirit.”-Barbara Rosenblatt, Art Subcommittee, Design and Construction Committee

The Ner TAMiD “This was the first large-scale piece where I have incorporated 24k gold leafing to the final patina. The gold added the light I was search-ing to describe in the ner tamid.” -Linda Ridgway

“The ner tamid itself is cast bronze of a random arrangement of twigs and branches. Because this arrangement is asymmetrical, its center of gravity is not a perfect balance from a hanging standpoint. Therefore, special provisions were incorporated into the cable mount system above the ceiling to counter-balance the load of the bronze in order for it to appear to hang as the artist had intended.” - Jim Cinquemani

The Ark “I am especially moved by the ark and its doors. The doors will be cov-ered with a Suzanne Tick weaving made exclusively of copper wire and fragments of colorful Mylar balloons washed up on the beaches of Fire Island. The notion that the Torah will be housed in some-thing bright and beautiful that others considered discarded issues a powerful message. Too often we think of a con-gregation as the place to come when we

are dressed up for a holiday or a simcha, with our best smiles on and our best selves always in evidence. But the truth is, we need to be a place where people can come when they are feeling bro-ken, abandoned, alone. To say that our holiest object will be housed in some-thing decorated with material which was “washed up”—and that what seems washed up can be beautiful—goes to the heart of who we try to be as an open and compassionate community. Our sages taught that the first set of tablets of the commandments, broken by Moses in his anger at the Golden Calf, traveled in the ark with the second set Moses later created with God. Our message is the same: Wholeness and brokenness both partake of the holy, and both have a home here.” -Rabbi David Stern

The BiMAh FurNishiNgs “The music stands were all cut from a single interesting plank of walnut in order to give them

a sense of continuity and relationship to each other. The kiddush table was made from a very special, thick and figured piece of black walnut with bark inclusions and small portions of free edges (the natural contours of the tree) breaking its rectilinear form. The Torah reading table had more complete free edges even in the center, and because of its height, was finished carefully on both sides. There is a large East Indian rosewood lip on the bottom to hold the Torah.” -Mira Nakashima

The experieNceWhat do you hope visitors to this space will experience?

“Wonderful interaction between clergy and con-gregants in a beautiful and enriching setting for prayer and family life cycle events.” - Randy Ratner, co-chair, Design and Construction com-mittee

“The poet Mary Oliver says it best. ‘Beauty can both shout and whisper.’ ” -Linda Ridgway “Encounters with one another, the sacred texts of our people, and the beauty of nature. The design reinforces the spiritual idea that something larger binds us together.” - Rabbi Asher Knight “The beauty and cycles of God’s creation that organize Jewish life. The windows of the Stern Cha-pel offer this wonderful opportunity for inspiration and connection.” -Rabbi Debra Robbins

“Sacred quality, a sense of peace, a connection to nature and the universe that my

father believed existed in all solid wood when treated with the proper respect—the soul of a tree.” -Mira Nakashima

den. Members arrived to a parking lot filled with flats of lumber, mountains of soil, and piles of mulch. We learned about Judaism’s agrarian roots. We sang and prayed. Few knew each other. Slowly, we began to plot and assemble. The members helped each other build. And as we worked, we began to share stories. The bonds that were planted that day have blossomed. Today, our community gardeners have supported each other through periods of mourning with meals made from food grown in the garden. They have donated fresh food and shared hilarious moments of camaraderie, organized Jewish learning through a Sh’ma Group, and developed meaningful spiritual practices.

This story is emblematic of what I love about Temple. At every turn, Temple Emanu-El is offering compelling, relevant and stimulating Jewish experiences that use the complexity and beauty of our tradition as a lens through which we explore our own lives. We seek to create con-nections to Judaism through meaningful relationships, fellowship, learning and expressive spiritual practices. I believe that we are trying to build a relational and sacred community that makes a positive impact upon the lives of our members and our world.

Ben Bag Bag’s words also remind us that Judaism is an evolving tradition. The value of our faith is revealed as much through our constant questions as through the transmitted answers. In that way, each of us has a duty and role to continue the conversation. It is incumbent upon us to gain knowledge of the past, so that we may have agency in creating a meaningful present and a strong future.

Thank you for the enormous blessing of allowing me to be your rabbi, for being my teacher as you have allowed me to be yours. While our relationship will change, this community will always be part of my extended family.
