Ottawa rockers HOLLERADO, present their highly anticipated sophomore LP White Paint. They span from his 1925 recording of Beethoven’s First Concerto (the first ever to be made of that work) to his visionary 1977 performances of Mozart’s Concertos Nos. 21 and 22, now receiving their first international CD release. Unlike the solo recordings set, this edition is non-limited.

Kempff traversed the set of Beethoven Concertos three times in the studio (only No.2 was not set down during the shellac era); all those performances are included in this set. There’s more Mozart, Brahms and Schumann. In addition, 1950s Decca recordings of two Mozart concertos, the Liszt and Schumann concertos are also featured.

The author of the new booklet essay is once again piano expert Gregor Willmes.

Hagar’s Song , the newest release from longtime ECM luminary Charles Lloyd who turns 75 in March 2013, is an interactive duo recording with Jason Moran, the star pianist who has been a key member of Lloyd’s latter‐day quartet, contributing to the albums Rabo de Nube (2008), Mirror (2010) and Athens Concert (2012).

Hagar’s Song, a collection of intimacy and homage, features pieces especially dear to Lloyd, ranging from compositions by Billy Strayhorn (“Pretty Girl” a/k/a “Star‐Crossed Lovers”), Duke Ellington (“Mood Indigo”), George Gershwin (“Bess, You Is My Woman Now”) and Earl Hines (“Rosetta”) to a standard strongly associated with Billie Holiday (“You’ve Changed”), Brian Wilson’s most famous Beach Boys ballad (“God Only Knows”) and a Bob Dylan song definitively interpreted by the Band (“I Shall Be Released”).

The centerpiece of the album is the title suite composed by Lloyd and dedicated to his great‐great‐grandmother, who was taken from her home in south Mississippi at age 10 and sold to another slave‐owner in Tennessee. “When I learned the story of her life it moved me very deeply,” says Lloyd. “The suite mirrors the stages of her life: loss of family, loneliness and the unknown, dreams, sorrow, and songs to her newborn children.” Animated by soul‐deep memory and a rich American artistic heritage, Hagar’s Song is music from the heart to the heart.

“Panagia” is Stephan Micus’ 20th album for ECM, and it coincides with his 60th birthday in January 2013. The Greek word Panagia is one of the names of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ. Stephan Micus’ album takes six Byzantine Greek prayers and sets them in his own inimitable way with instruments he has collected in years of travels round the world. “The album alternates sung poems with instrumental tracks and thus has a clearly symmetrical, even ritualistic, structure”, says Micus.

“On ‘Panagia’ I focussed mainly on strings,” explains Micus about the recording, made in his own studio on the island of Mallorca, where he has lived for many years. “The string instruments come from Bavaria, India, Pakistan, Chinese Xinjiang plus my own invention, a 14‐string guitar.” But he emphasizes that his aim is never to replicate other people’s music, but to create something new and universal.

Saxon Sacrifice

SAXON PREPARE TO DELIVER THEIR LATEST ALBUM SACRIFICE, IN FEBRUARY 2013

With a storming new stomp in their boots and a renewed, lithe swagger to their legendary sound, Saxon will release “Sacrifice”, in February 2013 through UDR. Taking a sharper, re-invigorated approach to the production, on this, their 20th album, Saxon have produced 10 of their strongest, heaviest and most inspired songs for many-a-year, and a more than worthy successor to their last album “A Call To Arms”.

“Less tricks, more power!” roars frontman and founding father Biff Byford, “my brief to the band was to be raw, be real and not be afraid to look back at the old classic material for inspiration.”

The album was recorded at LS Studios in Yorkshire and was produced by Byford with Andy Sneap mixing and engineering by Jacky Lehmann. It fairly bristles with muscular metallic intent, Paul Quinn’s and Doug Scarratt’s guitar work the best it’s ever been, while Biff’s vocals sound fresher and livelier. The songwriting too harks back to a classic era in Saxon’s history, with the likes of ‘Warriors Of The Road’, ‘Wheels Of Terror’ and ‘Stand Up And Fight’ evoking the halcyon days of yore with a contemporary twist, the classic Saxon sound absorbing the snarl, ferocity and attitude of contemporary bands (and fans) such as Megadeth, as evidenced by the crunching title cut ‘Sacrifice’.

“It’s certainly been done from a more early ‘80s thrashier perspective,” explains Biff, “and it’s not just guitars bashing away willy-nilly, they’ve got a fresh drive, purpose and perspective.”

Besides the new material, Saxon will also be adding some unique recordings of revisited classic to certain formats of the release, also produced by Byford and mastered by Andy Sneap, including an orchestrated version of ‘Crusader’ and an acoustic version of ‘Frozen Rainbow’.

“From the songs to the production, I wanted to focus on the raw aspects which made us great in the first place,” concludes Biff, “And living in that rawness, combined with some great classic Saxon-songwriting, has in my opinion made Saxon fresher than ever.”

The greatest cellist of the early 20th century, Pablo Casals is

renowned for the inimitably beautiful timbre and expressive

range of his playing. This extensive collection brings together

his classic interpretations of the Elgar and Dvorák cello

concertos, combined with a variety of suites, piano trios,

national Catalonian dances and other showpieces.

One of the most innovative and imaginative composers of the

20th century, Benjamin Britten was a master of the orchestral

genre. This extensive collection charts the development of

Britten’s orchestral voice and features some of his greatest works,

including the evocative Four Sea Interludes, the powerful and

majesticSinfoniadaRequiem,thevirtuosicYoungPerson’sGuide

to the Orchestra and the brilliantly colourful ballet score The

Prince of the Pagodas.

Known simply as ‘The Maestro’, Toscanini attracted adoring fans wherever and wheneverheperformedandhisvisittoLondonin1935wasnothingshortofasensation, quickly becoming the hottest ticket in town. Toscanini had already dazzled Londonaudiencesin1930withtheNewYorkPhilharmonic-SymphonyOrchestraandwhen he returned to the capital five years later he performed with a British ensemble forthefirsttime:theBBCSymphonyOrchestra.Formedin1930,theBBCSOquicklyestablished a reputation for virtuosity and was an ideal vehicle for Toscanini’s fiery musicianship. His visit was without question the highlight of the orchestra’s short history to that date. The HMV recordings that result from this collaboration have simply not been surpassed. For instance, his outstanding performance of La Mer benefits from both a vital energy and a variety of colours (that the recording, despite of its age, is surprisingly fully able to bring to our ears) and explains in itself the higher respect from the composer to the maestro.
