For just over a year, we have been preparing, packaging, and delivering meals out of our expanded and renovated building. Those of you who have known us for a while know that this has been our goal for many years. Now that we are settled in, we are able to serve more people than ever before. In July, 2018 we were serving approximately 740 meals daily. Now we

are delivering over 830 meals on 60 routes in Lubbock each day. The new building is being put to good use!

For years we have received calls from members of the Wolfforth community in need of assistance. Thanks to a Mahriah and Jeff Dickson, who graciously volunteered to coordinate services

in Wolfforth, we began service to Wolfforth on June 24, 2019. Volunteers pick up the meals to be delivered at the Wolfforth Farmers Market. From there, they deliver meals and smiles to people in need in the Wolfforth Community.

  • A note from the Executive Director, Lisa Gilliland

Often when people think of volunteer opportunities at Lubbock Meals on Wheels, they think of meal delivery.

We have a lot of volunteers that help in many other ways. We have people that help in the office, work in the kitchen, assist at events, and serve on our board of directors. There are many ways to get involved and everyone has something to contribute. For example, one of the volunteers who helps clean the delivery coolers is completely blind. He lives nearby so he is able to walk to our facility. He even came up with a brilliant idea to use Braille tags on the coolers and racks so

that he could further help us by putting the clean coolers back in their designated spots. He thanks us for accommodating him, but for us it is really the other way around – he is the one that is a great

help to the people we serve! We also have a recipient who has found ways to give back and support our organization. She, too, is blind but is great at craft projects. She makes colorful tissue paper flowers for us to include with the client birthday cakes. She also gets a ride to our office once a week and assists with cooler washing.

With a staff of only fifteen people and an ever growing need for our services, it takes all of our volunteers, with all of their many skills and talents, to fulfill our mission to keep our 835 clients well

fed, independent, and in their own homes as long as possible. If you have some time to give, I encourage you to get involved somewhere. Everyone has something to give, everyone needs a purpose, and everyone can make a difference.

    EVERYone has SOMEthing to give!

B I GW H E E L S Deliver MealsSAVE THE DATE! FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27It’s hard to believe that Big

Wheels Deliver Meals is only a

    few months away! On Friday,

    September 27th Lubbock Meals

    on Wheels and Sonic Drive-Ins

    will be teaming with classic

    cars and local celebrities!

    For this annual event, Sonic

    donates over 900 burgers and

tots to feed all of our recipients

and all of the volunteers that

help us with this event. Those

    yummy burgers are delivered

    by local celebrities chauffeured

    in classic cars. Our recipients

    enjoy the special visit, nostalgic

    cars, and the yummy, Sonic

    burgers. Following delivery, all

of our celebs and drivers are

invited back to our office to

enjoy lunch. On this day we will

need 61 classic cars and drivers

to deliver all of our Lubbock and

    Wolfforth routes.

C A R T R I V I A• Henry Ford was the first industrial giant to give his workers both Saturday and Sunday off in the hope that it

would encourage more leisure use of automobiles and, thus, he popularized the idea of the ‘weekend.’• According to a study at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, silver cars are 50% less likely than white

cars to be involved in a crash resulting in serious injury.• Windshield wipers were invented by Mary Anderson in 1903. At that time, auto makers didn’t believe the product

had commercial value so she was unable to sell her invention.

If you own a classic or unique car, and would like to participate in this very special promotion, please call Brittainy or Mary at (806) 792-7971.

  • In April, the first-year medical students at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center hosted their Annual Lubbock City Lights Charity Fundraiser. A portion of the proceeds raised, $13,887.20, benefited Lubbock Meals on Wheels.

Each year these hard-working students coordinate several fundraising efforts, the largest of which is a gala. Over the years they have raised over $1,000,000 for local non-profits.

Throughout the month of September, Comfort Keepers of Lubbock will work with

local businesses, churches, and organizations to collect specific food items and monetary

donations for Lubbock Meals on Wheels. LMOW will use these donations to fill 275 weekend meal sacks every week. Weekend meals are provided to those LMOW recipients who have no access to, or assistance with, food over the weekend.

This initiative supports Comfort Keepers’ goal to improve the quality of life for seniors and help

    them maintain healthy, independent lives.

Please join us to help Comfort Keepers of Lubbock KICK OFF this month-long

campaign on Friday, September 6th at Lubbock Meals on Wheels (2304 34th Street)

    from 4:00pm – 5:30pm.

Watch for the Feed Seniors Now food drive on September 21st at local Walmart locations

    (Loop 289 & Quaker, 114th & Quaker, 82nd & Milwaukee, and 4th & Frankford). These drives

    will take place between 10:00am & 4:00pm.

If you and/or your business or church wants to participate in the “FEED SENIORS NOW”

campaign by conducting a food drive or collecting cash donations, please call

Lubbock Police Department DeliversIn 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. This year, on Wednesday, May 15th, the Lubbock Police Department delivered all of Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ hot lunches to over 830 recipients on 60 different routes.

We appreciate the support we receive from LPD each year. We were excited to have LPD officers help provide meals to our homebound, elderly, and disabled recipients, and our recipients loved the special visit from our own first responders.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ Pet Program is currently helping recipients care for 216 dogs and 99 cats and sending out over 2,000 pounds of kibble each month. As our recipient numbers grow, our pet numbers grow as well. Thanks to your generous donations specifically for this special program, we are able to help pets and their humans stay together.

    • Cats require between 0.7 – 0.9 ounces of water per pound of body weight daily.

    • Stainless steel water and food dishes won’t add toxins to your cat’s diet.

    • Keep water available at all times, keep bowls clean, and be sure the water is fresh every day.

    • Feed your cat wet food to increase hydration.• Yucca extract can stimulate your cat to drink

more water and eat more.• Goat’s milk is the only milk that supports your

    cat naturally.

    • Dogs require between 1 – 5 ounces of water per pound of body weight daily.

    • Just as with cats, use stainless steel bowls, keep

bowls clean, keep water available at all times, and make sure the water is fresh every day.

    • Try giving your dog ice as a treat, especially when it’s hot outside.

    • Add broth to your dog’s food. This will increase

their hydration while they eat.• When your dog leaves the house with you, be sure

to bring and bowl and water along for the outing.• If your dog is dehydrated, give them some

The New Neighbor’s Club of Lubbock is a lively group of women that has lots of fun AND gives back to the community. They have luncheons, bridge games, movie days, and other activities throughout the year. Just before their summer break, they choose local non-profits to benefit from the money they have raised throughout the year. This great group seems to raise more money each year! This year they donated a very generous $6,000, an all-time high, to Lubbock Meals on Wheels, allowing us to help more people remain at home, well fed, and independent.
