NRSC - Factsheet A - 04 (Jan, 2014)
Major activities include
• Geomorphological mapping
• Geo-hazards
• Geo-engineering
• Geo-environment studies
Research &Developmental activities on
• Hyperspectral data analysis
• Interferometry
• Satellite gravity
• Geodetic GPS• Planetary geology
Geomorphology and lineament mapping
• Essential input for applied geological studies
such as ground water, mineral mapping,
geotechnical and geo-engineering
applications.
• Nationwide mapping executed in association
with Geological Survey of India (GSI)
Landforms (coral reef, sand dune, offshore bars and
palaeochannels) mapped from satellite image
Lineaments (fold axis, faults and joints)
mapped from satellite image
Geo-hazards
• Assessment of the geological disasters such as
landslide, earthquake and volcanic eruption
• Landslide hazard zonation (LHZ) and inventory
mapping along important tourist and pilgrim
routes in the Himalayas.
• Damage assessment for all major earthquakes.
• Maps and reports are hosted in Bhuvan
Recently for the Uttarakhand disaster, the chain of
events that led to the massive damage in Kedarnath
area has been reconstructed. Landslide inventory
mapping was also carried for the entire area.

Geo-environmental studies
•
Status of underground coal fire and itsdynamics is analysed through its surface
manifestations for coalfields such as Jharia and
Raniganj periodically
• Thermal infrared channels of satellite data are
used to map coal fires
Geo-engineering/Geotechnical studies
• Oil pipeline alignment and feasibility study for
hydroelectric dam site selection
• Geological parameters derived from satellite
data used to provide a suitable site for
engineering structures
Spectroscopic studies and satellite data analysis for
bauxite mapping in parts of Jharkhand
Spectroscopy of Rocks/minerals
• Spectral library for different rock types is
generated in the spectroscopy lab
• Spectral features of rocks are indicative of
mineralogy
• Spectral features with reference to
geochemical datasets are being convolved to
satellite data for mapping the potential areas
of Kimberlite, bauxite and limestone.
