Dear Friends,Our anniversary year continues with our Ice Cream Social scheduled for Friday, May 6th. Chef Raymond will bepreparing a picnic lunch. Friends Home in Kennett is generously sponsoring the ice cream social to follow.

Please mark your calendar and plan to attend the Wellness Fair to be held on Wednesday, May 11th. There willbe a variety of vendors available to share various community resources. Although many of us think we are yearsaway from some of the decisions and options presented – it is always a good idea to plan ahead. We know thatindividuals who remain involved, engaged and active are better able to age well in community.

What exactly does “age well in community” really mean? If we are not able to “age well in community” weprobably need some sort of assistance. This may be homecare assistance or possibly an assisted living facility ora nursing care. All of these options can be very expensive and are rarely covered by insurance of any kind.Senior Centers in general try very hard to make it easy for members to remain physically active, mentally stimulated and socially connected. By taking advantage of these opportunities, many are able to extend the timethey can live independently.

Thanks to the many volunteers and local businesses that helped to make our "All That Glitters" a wonderful success raising $18,000 for the Center. We are also very grateful for all of the hard work that goes into the fleamarkets each year. As has been mentioned many times, the people in our community are so generous withtime, talent and treasure. What a great foundation as we look to the next 50 years.

Have a wonderful May!

Community News FITNESS CENTER CORNERMay is National Blood Pressure Education Month! Highblood pressure makes your heart work harder andincreases your risk of heart disease and stroke. Youcan have high blood pressure and not know it. That iswhy it is so important to have your blood pressurechecked. Do you have high blood pressure? Are youinterested in taking the steps necessary to lower it orprevent it from happening? I’m sure you have heard ittime and time again, but there are plenty of littlechanges you can make. Start with just a little moremovement in your day than usual and then add to that. The goal would be planned exercise (going for a walk, light resistance training) on most days of the week. Also, you should monitor your salt intake by readinglabels and not adding any extra “for taste.” These aretwo small changes that you can make that will hopefully help lower your blood pressure!~ Contributed by Marci Mantegna, Fitness Center Site Manager,CardioKinetics

WHY SHouLD I Pre-reGISTer? - Often, in thenewsletter, you will be asked to register at theReception Desk. It is important that you do so forseveral reasons.1. We sometimes cancel a class/trip due to low registration. If you are interested and do not signup, you might miss out on a class/trip that you areinterested in.2. If a class is cancelled and you are not registered,we can’t call you to notify you of the cancellation. Then you come to the Center and are disappointedthat you have made the trip for a cancelled class. 3. Instructors will often ask us for a number of registrations. This helps them to prepare for theclass and make the appropriate number of handouts. 4. Room assignments might be able to be adjustedto accommodate a smaller or larger group, but thistoo depends on the number of registrations. ~Thank you!

SHAkeSPeAre CeLebrATIonWednesday, May 18th 1:00pmPresenter: Lloyd King, DE Humanities ForumIn this presentation, we celebrate the exceptionalpoet, dramatist, actor, playwright, and incredibleintellect of a man called Shakespeare. He was thefirst writer to create personality, character, and mostof what we now think of as “human traits.” In addition to coining thousands of words in theEnglish language, he also created the words andconcepts that modern man still uses to define himself. Shakespeare is probably the greatest writerin English or any other language. Amazingly, heproduced thirty-seven plays that are still performedon stages worldwide. Four hundred years has notdiminished his acceptance in the cultures of theworld. Let’s create an international holiday to celebrate his contributions to all humans—past andpresent!
