RBC’s investment in our graduates demonstrates the corporation’s belief that imagination and innovation are essential to vibrant communities and robust economics. I would also like to express my gratitude to the interns who make this happen: Siobhán Gallagher, BDes ’12, who designed the catalogue, and Alejandra Vera, BFA ’12, and Jack Ross, BFA ’12, who organized the accompanying exhibition. Congratu-lations on a job well done. To Siobhán, Alejandra, Jack, and all the other newly minted alumni whose creativity is captured in these pages, I extend my sincere best wishes to you and your families. You are the flag bearers for this incredible university; go out and tell the world about the place where your talents and ingenuity were nurtured. And please, stay in touch. We want to hear about all the incredible things you do as you do as you blaze your path into the future.

David B. SmithPresidentNSCAD University

Graduating from NSCAD University entails more than walking across a stage to receive a diploma—and the “more” has to do with the catalogue you now hold in your hands. It’s like a time capsule for one given academic year, capturing the best work of yet another crop of remarkable graduates. This cata-logue is sent to galleries and libraries far and wide. And it’s an important part of an artist’s professional portfo-lio as our graduates embark on the exciting careers that await them. It’s a calling card that will get them in the door of a gallery or a key element that will set them apart as they apply for grad school. For the graduates whose artwork is included, this catalogue is person-al. As they flip through, they’ll recall the creative spark and hard work that went into their own contribution and that of their classmates. A publication like this could not be achieved without the support of RBC Dominion Securities, which funds this catalogue and the an-nual graduation exhibition. We’re deeply appreciative for the support.

Stewart RobinsonVP & Branch Manager,Nova Scotia Group,RBC Dominion Securities

As one of Canada’s most respected corporations, we at RBC know that the ongoing vitality of a thriving and innovative arts community is in our long-term business interest. We believe that healthy, vibrant communities are a direct result of investing in creative vision and artistic talent. We put our knowledge into action by investing in NSCAD’s Graduation Catalogue, one of the many projects we support through the RBC Emerging Artists Project. Also under this umbrella is the RBC Canadian Painting Competition, a prestigious national competition for emerging artists under the age of 40 and one of the largest award disbursements for painting in Canada. It is entirely possible that some of the artists whose work is reproduced in this catalogue will show up on the shortlist for the RBC Canadian Painting Competition somewhere down the road; indeed, it has happened many times before.

RBC extends congratulations to NSCAD University on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of your founding and to the NSCAD graduates of 2012. You represent the newest generation of alumni of this proud and vital institution. We celebrate your creative vision and artistic talent and wish you continued success.

When you step foot into NSCAD University’s Granville Campus, you enter a labyrinth of unpredictable staircases, winding hallways, odd rooms you never realized existed, and the occasional trap door. After four years at NSCAD, I’ve become accustomed to all of its twists and turns but am now preparing, along with the rest of my graduating class, to turn a new corner. This year marks NSCAD’s 125th anniversary and it too is turning a new corner. I wanted this idea of change to be the theme for this 2012 Graduation Catalogue and interpreted the idea of turning a corner quite literally in the cover design, having the colorful and repeated geometric shapes form a distinct corner from the back cover to the front, using the book’s spine as the corner’s edge. Graduating during such a land-mark anniversary year for NSCAD reminds me that our history is such a significant part of our future.

This makes me reflect on the past and what brought us here, as a university and as a graduating class. Our school and education have helped shape our creative influ-ences, styles, methods of working, and therefore, our future. That is our history and it is NSCAD’s history and rich past that have helped us reach this point. As you turn each page in this book, you will see how each student chose to represent themselves at this turning point in their life. I hope we can use this catalogue as a reminder of what brought us to this point and what NSCAD helped us achieve. Congratulations, graduates of 2012! Here’s to hoping the winding paths of our future are not nearly as confusing as the ones inside the corner of Duke and Granville.

Siobhán GallagherDesigner and Coordinator2012 Graduation Catalogue

As graduating students and interns at the Anna Leonowens Gallery, we are very excited for the opportunity to curate the 2012 Graduation Exhibition. This year marks NSCAD University’s 125th anniversary and today it continues a proud tradition of cutting edge art production, design, and critical thinking. We are proud to be involved in such a landmark event for the school. Over the past four years, our experience at NSCAD has been exceptional. We have made strong connections with peers, instructors, and the arts community. We remember our time working in the studios, our class discussions, group critiques, and the many challenges that have pushed us to grow. We have seen our peers develop personally and profess-ionally, and it has been a privilege to work with such an outstanding group of students and faculty.

The exhibition and catalogue present the diverse talents of emerging artists and designers of the graduating class. The passionate work of these students will have a significant impact on our culture, and it cannot be stressed enough how important NSCAD is in fostering critical engagement. Often, especially in periods of economic pressure, the benefits of art in society can be undervalued. We must not forget the power of art to positively challenge the status quo, question the world around us, and expand the possibilities of what we can achieve. We congratulate our peers, the graduating students of 2012! Join us in celebrating the next generation of artists and designers moving into rewarding and fulfilling careers in their chosen fields.

Title: Point Pleasant Park, Halifax, NS. Canada

Description: One winter morning we were walking our dog on the shore, along where the gulls drop shellfish on the rocks (to break open and eat). It was a really, really cold morning and I had to pry the empty mus-sel shells out of the sand to make a simple spiral. Too cold to do more and even then, what the wind didn’t blow off, our dog would run in and snatch shells from the pattern. Ha!
