Mitosis and Meiosis
Higher Biology

Mitosis and Meiosis
• Mitosis:-division of somatic (body) cells
• Meiosis-division of gametes (sex cells)
![Page 3: Nscu 302 wk 2 5](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052600/5589303bd8b42a3e608b4647/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Mitosis
• Interphase
• Prophase
• Metaphase
• Anaphase
• Telophase
![Page 4: Nscu 302 wk 2 5](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052600/5589303bd8b42a3e608b4647/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Interphase
• Interesting things happen!1. Cell preparing to divide2. Genetic material doubles
![Page 5: Nscu 302 wk 2 5](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052600/5589303bd8b42a3e608b4647/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Prophase
• Chromosome pair up!1. Chromosomes thicken and shorten
-become visible-2 chromatids joined by a centromere
2. Centrioles move to the opposite sides of the nucleus
3. Nucleolus disappears4. Nuclear membrane disintegrate
![Page 6: Nscu 302 wk 2 5](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052600/5589303bd8b42a3e608b4647/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
![Page 7: Nscu 302 wk 2 5](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052600/5589303bd8b42a3e608b4647/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Metaphase
• Chromosomes meet in the middle!
1. Chromosomes arrange at equator of cell
2. Become attached to spindle fibres by centromeres
3. Homologous chromosomes do not associate
![Page 8: Nscu 302 wk 2 5](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052600/5589303bd8b42a3e608b4647/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
![Page 9: Nscu 302 wk 2 5](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052600/5589303bd8b42a3e608b4647/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Anaphase
• Chromosomes get pulled apart1. Spindle fibres contract pulling
chromatids to the opposite poles of the cell
![Page 10: Nscu 302 wk 2 5](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052600/5589303bd8b42a3e608b4647/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Telophase
• Now there are two!1. Chromosomes uncoil2. Spindle fibres disintegrate3. Centrioles replicate4. Nucleur membrane forms5. Cell divides
![Page 11: Nscu 302 wk 2 5](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052600/5589303bd8b42a3e608b4647/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)

Meiosis
• 4 daughter cells produced• Each daughter cell has half the
chromosomes of the parent• 2 sets of cell division involved
