NordSecMob is a two-year Master of Sciencedegree Programme (120 ECTS credits). Duringthe programme, the students will study at twoof the five Nordic partner universities: HelsinkiUniversity of Technology (TKK) in Finland, Tech-nical University of Denmark (DTU), The RoyalInstitute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden, TheNorwegian University of Science and Technology(NTNU) and the University of Tartu (UT) in Esto-nia. After completing the two-year programme,successful students will be awarded two officiallyrecognized M.Sc. degrees: one from each uni-versity where they studied.

The programme offers students breadth anddeep of knowledge in the field of computerscience, data security and mobile comput-ing, both in theory and in practice. The pro-gramme develops the students' research skillsto enable them to take up further studies at PhDlevel; it also provides experience of internationalR&D environments, and enables access to majorinternational networks.

rogrammeThe first autumn term studies are taken at one of the three universities: TKK, KTH orNTNU. Students with the specialization "Software Security" move from home universityto DTU for the first spring semester and stay second year at DTU. Students with otherspecialization tracks move after first year studies to other (TKK, NTNU, KTH and UT) forthe second autumn semester.

TKK: Technical Information Securityand Network Services

The focus of the first autumn at TKK is handson learning of security and computer networksthrough laboratory works and with emphasison basic courses of security and mobile com-puting. The first spring concentrates on ad-vanced courses in mobile computing, security,and services including interactive courses,project works and seminars. The focus of thestudies of the second autumn is on advancedcourses in mobile computing, security, andservices including interactive courses, projectworks and seminars.

KTH: Communications SystemsDesign

The focus of the first autumn at KTH is on com-munication security, including advanced topicsin networking and security, theory and laboratoryexercises. The focus of the first spring is onproblem-oriented, project-driven learning inteams addressing real-life problems in the com-munication systems area, with external projectowners, optionally in parallel with a few technicalspecialization courses on mobile services. Thefocus of the second autumn at KTH is on ad-vanced operator related topics, including tech-nical network management, technology man-agement and business management/creation.

NTNU: Information Security

The focus of the first autumn at NTNU is onbasic networking courses, dependability, per-formance, simulation and basic cryptography.The focus of the first spring is on communicationsecurity, including basic topics in networkingand security, theory and laboratory exercisesand topics on technology management and busi-ness management/creation. The focus of thesecond autumn at NTNU is on advanced topicsin networking and security with a minor thesison a specialization topic, security management.

DTU – Software Security

At DTU, the focus is on Safe and Secure IT-Systems: Methods, tools and techniques fordesign, implementation, and validation of safeand secure IT-systems. Covering Network Tech-nology (privacy and intrusion detection) as wellas Language Based Technology (program anal-ysis, operational semantics, process calculi,and software validation).

UT – Mathematical Foundations ofCryptography

The focus of the studies at Tartu is on strongtheoretical foundation on cryptography, crypto-graphic solutions, construction of secure proto-cols, and related fields of mathematics (e.g.,combinatorics and number theory). .

In the TKK NordSecMob-programme theresearch focus is on the evolution of theInternet technologies as well as on thedesign, implementation, and verificationof IP based systems. In addition to theInternet technologies, research addressesmobile networks and specifically the de-velopment of applications and services inheterogeneous network environments.Focal areas for both Internet and mobilenetworks are security, service architec-tures and subjects related to service man-agement such as mobility, quality-of-service and charging. Security issues in-cluding privacy, trust and identity man-agement are central for this researchgroup. .

ersKTH was founded in 1827and is the largest ofSweden's universities oftechnology. It consists ofnine schools with over11,000 undergraduatestudents, 1,500 active

postgraduate students and a staff of 3,100people. There are four campuses with themain campus in central Stockholm. TheKTH part of the programme is organisedunder the KTH School of ICT.

The ICT school of KTH conducts researchon communication systems, includingtheir use, policy and regulation of com-munication markets, design and imple-mentation of applications, services andnetwork systems. In the area of commu-nication systems design, the main re-search topics are network architecturesand protocols for the future Internet, the

The Department ofTelematics focusesits information se-curity research ontwo main topics:

Security as a pivotal ingredient of Quanti-tative Quality of Service and cryptographicprotocols. Modelling, design, analysis andevaluation of information security for ICT

systems, services and protocols have inthe past most frequently been performedby using qualitative principles, methodsand measures. However, in the presenttransition into an end user environmentdominated by ubiquitous computing powerand service realization, the informationsecurity research needs to be focused onthe quantitative aspects of description andnegotiation of perceived QoS. Crypto-graphic Protocols can be considered asdistributed algorithms that employ cryp-

tographic functions for securing distribut-ed computerized communication systems,their goals being to restrict, establish andpreserve the security properties of infor-mation. A specific long-standing inquiryin the field of crypto-protocols is that ofdefining and constructing information pri-vacy, for instance in digital cash and e-voting schemes. Digital Tracks is anotherresearch activity which addresses bothprivacy and forensic concerns.

DTU was originally foundedas the College of AdvancedTechnology in 1829. DTU hasa high international stan-dard within the technical-natural sciences, based on

15 individual departments as well as anumber of research centers on campusin Kongens Lyngby, the Copenhagen Met-ropolitan area. The University has approx-imately 900 researchers, 6,000 studentsand 600 PhD students. The Computer Sci-

ence and Engineering section at the Infor-matics and Mathematical Modelling de-partment at DTU is responsible for theteaching of the programme. The teachingin safe and secure IT-systems is an estab-lished part of DTU's engineering curricu-lum and supported by active research atthe department.

In the DTU NordSecMob-programme thereare two main research components. Onedeals with software security and focuses

on techniques that can be used to validatedesigns of systems for the absence ofsecurity flaws and to develop systems thatcan be relied upon to adhere to given se-curity policies. To be specific, research oncommunication protocols using staticanalysis, originally developed in the EU-project DEGAS, has successfully used tovalidate a number of voting and single-sign on protocols; research on accesscontrol and information flow, includingthe Decentralised Label Model, gives con-crete techniques for constructing softwaresystems where code is guaranteed tosatisfy given confidentiality, integrity orauthenticity properties. Another deals withsystem security and network security. Onefocus is on how to construct systems that

are likely to give users privacy and ano-nymity; another focus is the study of in-trusion detection systems and how theycan best be configured to protect the user.

UT was originally founded as AcademiaDorpatensis (Gustaviana) in 1632 and itwas reopened in 1802. UT has 11 faculties,3 research institutes and 6 colleges withmore than 70 departments, institutes and

clinics. The total number of students isover 18,000, with a teaching staff of 1,300.UT is located in Tartu, in the southeastpart of Estonia. The responsibility of theteaching of the programme at Universityof Tartu is on the Institute of ComputerScience of the Department of Mathematicsand Computer Science.

The main NordSecMob-related researchareas in Tartu University are data securityand cryptography. The interests of ourworking group reach from practical secu-rity analysis to foundations of cryptograph-ic primitives. The main research topicsare the following: security models basedon attack trees, economics of security,privacy preserving data mining, formalproof systems for cryptographic protocolsand properties of hash functions and ap-plications of hash functions in digital time-stamping.

Admission Requirements

The NordSecMob-programme is targetedfor top-quality students of all nationalities.

The admission criteria to the programmeis a high quality Bachelor's degree en-compassing a minimum of 180 ECTScredits in Engineering (Computer Scienceor Information technology) or equivalentstudies, i.e., must be a degree of at leastthree years of full-time studies.

The applicants shouldhave solid knowledge ofmathematics (discretemathematics) , pro-gramming skills, datastructures and algo-rithms, computer archi-tecture and basics ofcomputer networks. Inaddition, a basic knowl-edge of following subjectareas will be an advan-tage: databases and da-tabase management,principles of theoretical computer sci-ence, logic in computer science, softwareengineering, operating systems, and con-current programming.

The language of instruction of the Nord-SecMob-programme is English. Thus,applicants must have a good commandof English and most applicants mustpresent an official language test certifi-

Erasmus Mundus-scholarships for Non-European students

Non-European students can apply for generous EU-funded Erasmus Mun-dus scholarships. Eligible for the Er-asmus Mundus scholarships are stu-dents who are NOT nationals of the EU member states, the EEA-states nor nationals of the candidate countries for accession to the EU. Furthermore, eligible students may not be residents of the EU/EEA/candidate countries, nor may they have carried out their main activities (study, work, etc) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in the EU/EEA/can-didate countries. These scholarships are awarded to the best students on a competitive basis.

The Erasmus Mundus scholarship to-tals 21,000 Euro per academic year. This includes 10 monthly grants of 1,600 Euro and a fixed amount of 5,000 Euro for fees, travel expenses, reloca-tion costs, etc. For NordSecMob-pro-gramme lasting two years the student receives 42,000 Euro.

Erasmus Mundus scholarships for Non-European scholars

A scholar is an academic and/or pro-fessional of outstanding experience who carries out teaching or research assignments and scholarly work in the institutions participating in the Nord-SecMob-programme. Erasmus Mun-dus scholarships allow Non-European scholars to perform the tasks defined by the consortium for a maximum of three months.

The amount of an average three-month scholarship for scholars is 13,000 Euro. This includes three monthly grants of 4,000 Euro and a fixed amount of 1,000 Euro for travel expenses.

Nordplus-scholarships for all nationalities

The selected NordSecMob-students can apply for Nordplus-scholar-ships for the mobility period (max 10 months) to the host university. All na-tionalities can apply for the Nordplus-scholarships.

Erasmus-scholarships for European students

The European students selected to NordSecMob-programme can apply for Erasmus-scholarships for the mo-bility period to the host university.

NordSecMob-consortium scholarships for EU/EEA citizens

The NordSecMob-consortium offers scholarships for excellent EU/EEA citi-zens. For details, check NordSecMob-website http://nordsecmob.tkk.fi

Programme fee

There is no programme fee for EU/EEA students. The programme fee is charged from any other than EU member state and EEA nationals. The programme fee is announced on the NordSecMob-website.
