1 Introduction

EATON is a world first class supplier of hardware and software to optimize business continuity of your IBM Blade servers, assuring data integrity on each blade. Blade frame is supplied with one or two redundant power supplies. Each power supply can also be supplied by one or more UPS systems. We offer to install on each blade our protection server component, Network Shutdown Module v3 . Each of those components will use electrical redundancy, consolidating information from UPS which are supplying the frame. Installing our software on each blade will offer these advantages:

You maintain a performance node in your high availability architecture, avoiding the creation of a point of failure.

You can configure each module adapted to each blade specificities (electrical load repartition for non-critic blade, system shutdown duration…),

You can use deployment tools, and silent installation mode of our Network Shutdown Module

You can configure each module using a protected web interface (HTTPS / Password) Via Enterprise Power Manager, you can supervise your blade servers electrical status.

This booklet will guide you through the installation and configuration process of NSM v3, with 2 different entries:

Local installation from CD Rom media: in case you don’t have an automated deployment tool, you will do a manual installation of the module, blade by blade.

Automated installation, on blades with the same OS, via the IBM deployment utility. It’s the easiest and the fastest solution. This second method will use IBM Director Premium, but allow sysadmin to learn all functions and concepts of « personalized package » and « silent installation » included in Network Shutdown Module v3, to simplify portage to other deployment tools.

EATON tested blade server security in a redundant power supply configuration, for clean system shutdown, electrical shutdown, and blade or frame reboot.

2 Installation

The recommendations provided in this manual aim at implementing our Network Shutdown Module V3 solution in order to guarantee continuity of electrical power supply for IBM BladeCenter architecture. The IBM hardware configuration for these recommendations is based on an IBM eServer BladeCenter (8677 machine type chassis). The blade servers used are of the single processor type, based on the AMD Opteron processor for the IBM LS20 (type 8850) and Intel Xeon processor for the IBM HS20 (type 8843) A Management Module is delivered as a standard with the chassis and can manage all the modules that are mounted on the chassis.

2.1 Prerequisites

All the prerequisites below apply to the different installation procedures in the Network Shutdown Module V3 described in the following chapters.

2.1.1 IBM hardware architecture

The entire IBM eServer BladeCenter hardware architecture has undergone a firmware update. Make sure you install these or later versions: - Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) for blades HS20 (Version 1.16 / Release date 2006/06/13) - Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) for blades LS20 (Version 2.04 / Release date 2006/01/31) - Management Module (Revision 16 / Release date 2006/05/12) Firmware updates can be downloaded from the IBM web site at the following address: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-63017 Please use the various help files provided with IBM updates for their installation.

illustration 2: Summary of IBM eServer BladeCenter firmware releases. Automatic blade reboot option following a full electrical failure of the chassis: The IBM HS-20 blade can deal with an automatic reboot option when the chassis power supply is restored. To activate it, press the F1 key on blade start-up to enter the Configuration/Setup utility program, then go down in the menu to "Advanced Setup ". After that, access the "Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) Settings " menu and set the "Reboot System on NMI " parameter to Enabled .

2.1.2 EATON hardware architecture

For UPS systems, please refer to the list of EATON ranges compatible with the Network Shutdown Module V3. The prerequisites for Network Shutdown Module V3 installation are described in the "Network Shutdown Module V3 – User Manual" chapter: Prerequisites before installation .

2.1.3 Network architecture

All hardware elements must have an operational network configuration that allows them to dialog freely with each other. Make sure in particular that your firewalls authorise connections on tcp port 4679 and 4680. These ports are reserved for EATON at IANA (http://www.iana.org). To configure your IBM eServer BladeCenter for the network, refer to the "Installation and User’s Guide" for BladeCenter Type 8677 supplied with your hardware. To configure your EATON UPS for the network, refer to "Network Shutdown Module V3 –User manual " documentation, chapter: UPS connection To configure your operating systems for the network, refer to their specific documentation.

2.2 Option1: Local installation using a CD-rom

For this type of installation, we use the chassis Media Tray (CD-Rom drive) to access the executable files for Network Shutdown Module V3 installation. You can also proceed using a remote CD-Rom drive, provided that the remote access conditions to the peripheral have been fulfilled (sharing, access configuration, rights, etc.) Installation can be conducted either locally, directly on the chassis via the KVM connection on the Management Module and the screen, or remotely using the remote administration tools adapted to the target operating system.

2.2.1 Windows 2003 Server Installation

Network Shutdown Module V3 installation uses the Internet browser. The CD-Rom's auto run takes you to the main screen. Then all you have to do is select " EATON Network Solution " and follow the instructions. For more information on the installation's operating mode, please refer to the "Network Shutdown Module V3 – User Manual" documentation, chapter: Installation Procedure . Note: The reinforced configuration security options in your browser may ask for authorisation to execute the CD-Rom's contents. If this is the case, authorise access on the page that asks you to do so.

2.3 Option2: Installation by software distribution via IBM Director Premium Edition

The standard IBM Director version does not allow Network Shutdown Module V3 installation. You need the IBM Director Premium Edition version which provides the additional functions needed to take on personalised modules. Please contact your IBM representative to procure it. Before anything else, make sure that your IBM Director Premium Edition's architecture meets IBM's recommendations on implementing this distribution tool. You must at least have a Management Server that has an IBM Director Server, an IBM Director Agent and an IBM Director Console. IBM Director Premium Edition's architecture may also have an additional Management Console, which, fitted out with an IBM Director Console, allows you to remotely conduct software distribution. Make sure that all of the components needed for software distribution via the IBM Director are correctly installed and configured and that your distribution architecture is functional. For more information on the distribution infrastructure of the IBM Director and its installation / configuration, please refer to chapters "IBM Director environment" and "IBM Director Components" in the "IBM Director Installation and configuration guide"

2.3.1 Installation of the IBM Director Premium Edit ion agent on the blades

This step does not present any particular problems. Simply install the IBM Director agent on all of the chassis blades. Blades that are not fitted out with the agent will not benefit from the distribution mode described in the following chapter. The installation procedure for the different IBM Director components including the agent is explained in the"IBM Director Installation and configuration guide". Please refer to this source document to conduct this installation.
