CMPE118/218/L: INTRODUCTION TO MECHATRONICS

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO CREATE A 2D DRAWING OF YOUR ASSEMBLY PARTS:

1. Open your final assembly file in SolidWorks.

2. From the “New” menu, choose “Make Drawing from Part/Assembly”.

3. In the “Sheet Format/Size window”, click on “Custom sheet size”. Enter the dimensions of the sheet (Including the units) and click on OK.

4. To set the sheet’s scale, right-click on “Sheet1” from the “FeatureManager design tree” and then click on properties. (It is very important to set the sheet scale to 1:1 before inserting any parts into the drawing. If you do not do this first, you will have to change the scale of each part separately when you insert it into the drawing.)

5. In “Sheet Properties” set the scale to 1:1 and click OK.

6. Now you’re ready to insert parts. Click on the yellow folder icon on the small menu on the right.

7. Since you already have your assembly file open, click on “Open in SolidWorks” under the “File Explorer” menu. Choose the part that you want to insert in to the drawing, and drag it into the sheet.

8. Before the part is completely inserted in the drawing, the orientation of the 2D part should be selected. To do so, unmark “Create multiple views” and choose an orientation from “Standard Views”. Finally click on the green check mark to finalize inserting part. Notice that the default scale of the part was set to “sheet’s scale”. If you hadn’t set the sheet scale to 1:1 you could set the part scale to 1:1 under “Use custom scale”

9. Follow steps 7-8 to insert more parts into the drawing.

10. If you need to create a duplicate of a part, click on the desired part in the drawing, copy and paste it.

11. To move a part in the drawing, simply click on the part and drag it. 12. To rotate a part click on the part in the drawing, then click on the rotate icon on top of the

sheet. If you drag the part now, it will rotate in the direction that you are dragging it. You can also enter a specific rotation degree in the newly opened “Rotate Drawing View” window. After you are done, click on close.

13. Finally, after you are done putting all parts into the drawing, click on “Save As” from the save drop down menu on top.

14. Choose Adobe Illustrator (.ai) from the “Save as type” drop down menu and click on OK. Later you will open this file in Corel Draw to cut the parts using the laser cutter.

You may also save the file as a SolidWorks drawing file for future modifications.
