Deanna Swoboda is Assistant Professor of Music at Arizona State University, where she teaches tuba and euphonium, entrepreneurship and music courses, coaches chamber music, and designs creative music performances.

Prior to joining the ASU music faculty, Swoboda was Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Western Michigan University where she was a full-time member of the Western Brass Quintet. Prior to WMU, Ms. Swoboda was tubist of the Dallas Brass, a 6-piece ensemble that travels the United States and Europe presenting hundreds of concerts each year and working extensively in the public schools and at colleges and universities. Swoboda is also the creator and performer of a motivational recruiting video and music workshop called “Band Blast Off.”

Swoboda has taught at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, the University of Northern Iowa, University of Denver, and University of Idaho. As an international performer and clinician, she has been a guest at the National Conservatory of Madrid (Spain), Deutschen Tubaforum–Hammelberg (Germany), The Higher School for the Arts in Porto, Portugal, and the St. Petersburg Conservatory in St. Petersburg, Russia. As a clinician and performer, Swoboda has appeared at the national and northwest regional conventions of Music Educators National Conference (MENC) on numerous occasions, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, International Women’s Brass Conference, The Army Band Tuba Euphonium Conference, International Tuba-Euphonium Conferences, and for state music educator associations. Deanna Swoboda currently serves as past president for I.T.E.A., the International Tuba Euphonium Association.

Her mentors are Roberts Spevacek, Rex Martin and Sam Pilafian.

Her debut solo CD, “Deanna’s Wonderland,” was released on Summit Records in 1999. Her new solo CD is entitled “Shamanic Journey” and features the music of women composers. It is available at Potenza Music.

Dr. Boyd Perkins serves as Director of Bands and Chairman of the Music Department at Northern State University, Aberdeen, South Dakota. A native of Brookings, S.D., Perkins earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from the University of Iowa. Additional degrees include a Master of Arts degree in Wind Conducting from The University of Iowa and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from South Dakota State University.

Jessica PerkinsA native of Davenport, Iowa, Jessica Perkins has led successful and innovative band and orchestra programs at all levels of instruction. She holds a B.M. in Music Education and Euphonium Performance and a master’s degree in Music Education, both from the University of Iowa. Prior to her appointment at Northern State University, she spent five years as the orchestra director at Simmons Middle School in Aberdeen, S.D. Under her direction, the Aberdeen Honor Orchestra performed at the South Dakota Music Educators Association Conference in Rapid City.

Before she moved to South Dakota, she served as Director of Bands at Xavier High School, a large high school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During her time there, she led the band to the first Division “I” ratings in both marching band and concert band in the history of the school.

Perkins maintains an active schedule as a euphonium soloist, having been featured with high school, community, and university bands and orchestras throughout Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota. In 2000, Perkins was the winner of the Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Brass Solo Artist competition, as well as the University of Iowa Concerto Competition. She also appeared as a featured guest artist at the Hawkeye Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference at the University of Iowa. She is a board member of the South Dakota Music Educators Association, where she serves as the editor of The South Dakota Musician, the official publication of the SDMEA. Perkins has also been the staff music arranger for the NSU Marching Wolves since 2008.

Dr. Terry Beckler currently serves as Percussion Professor and Assistant Director of Bands at Northern State University. Prior to his appointment at NSU, Beckler served as Director of Bands at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, MN and Director of Bands at Huron University. He also has ten years of public school experience as band director for the Red Rock Central (Lamberton, Minn.) and Sioux Valley (Volga, S.D.) school districts. Beckler has been a member of the 147th Army Band based in Mitchell, S.D. for over twenty years. He enlisted in 1986 as a percussionist and since 1998 has served as

commander/conductor of this group. In January of 2006 the 147th Army Band was awarded the Howard Citation of Musical Excellence administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. Beckler currently holds the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3. He is an active clinician in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota and a former member of the Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps.

Frederic J.B. Hemke Prior to his appointment at Northern State University, Mr. Hemke was the Director of Jazz Performance Studies and saxophone instructor at the University of Missouri-Columbia for ten years. He received his bachelor’s and master’s of music degrees from Northwestern University. He has performed as a guest artist in many international venues. He has been featured with the Amazonia Jazz Ensemble at The International Festival of Music of Pará in Belem, Brazil. He premiered new music commissioned for him in Poland with the Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra

and was a guest artist at the Athens International Jazz Festival with the Athens Big Band. He has taught as a visiting scholar in jazz at the Franz Liszt College of Music in Budapest Hungary and soloed at a jazz festival in that city. He has been featured as a soloist at the North American Saxophone Alliance. Mr. Hemke is a member of the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, the International Association of Jazz Educators, and the National Honorary Music Society Pi Kappa Lambda.

Dr. Grant Manhart holds a Doctor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance and Literature with minors in music history and jazz studies from Indiana University, a master’s degree in trumpet performance with a minor in Jazz Studies from Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a bachelor’s degree in trumpet performance from the University of Wisconsin. His extensive performing experience includes classical, jazz and popular music. Dr. Manhart is busy as a performer, clinician and adjudicator.

Dr. Alan D. LaFave served as Director of Bands at Northern State University, Aberdeen, S.D., from 1991-2006. He currently serves as the Dean of Fine Arts and Professor of Music/clarinet. He holds the B.M.E. in instrumental/vocal music from Northern State University and the M.M. and D.M.A. in clarinet performance from Arizona State University, Tempe. Prior to his appointment at NSU, Dr. LaFave taught at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, Arizona State University, Tempe, Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, and Central High School, Aberdeen. His formal clarinet training includes studies with Harvey Moen, James Gai, and Robert Spring.

Dr. LaFave has performed with the Phoenix Bach Choir Orchestra, Quintessence, the Arizona Ballet Orchestra, the South Dakota Symphony, and was principal clarinet with the Arizona State University Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, and American Serenade Band. In addition, he performed for three consecutive Northern Plains Clarinet Symposiums, Grand Forks, N.D., and the Montana/Idaho Clarinet Symposium, Missoula, Mont. He is in constant demand as a soloist throughout the upper Midwest and presented a solo performance for the 2000 International Clarinet Association ClarinetFest. Dr. LaFave was named the 2000 South Dakota Outstanding Bandmaster of the Year by Phi Beta Mu, International Bandmasters Fraternity. In March 2002, the NSU Symphonic Band performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C. In 2006, Dr. LaFave was elected to the prestigious American Bandmasters Association and was the recipient of the Phi Beta Mu Distinguished Service Award.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATIONThe NSU music scholarship program is one of the most attractive in the region. Based upon auditions, Northern State University awards the following scholarships:

$2,000 per year for four years — Excellence in Music Scholarships $1,500 — Hatterscheidt Scholarships

Music minors and talented non-music majors may also audition for scholarships. Last year, nearly 100 music scholarships were awarded to upperclassmen and freshmen.

2014 scholarship audition dates: Feb. 21, Johnson Fine Arts Center Feb. 22, Johnson Fine Arts Center

If you are unable to audition on those dates, please submit a recording by Feb. 17. YouTube links are preferred. Furthermore, NSU offers a four-year guaranteed scholarship called the Northern WolfPACT based upon ACT scores as follows:

$12,000 – ACT 30+ $11,000 — ACT 28+ $7,000 — ACT 24–27 $5,000 — ACT 21–23

Finally, the full tuition and fees Dakota Corps Scholarship and the $5,000 South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship are available to qualified South Dakota high school graduates.
