Two more on murder countsTwo northern suburbs men have been charged with the murder of a man at Epping in May. Oguzhan Gurkan, 34, of Meadow Heights, and Ozan Yusuf, 38, from Thomastown, appeared before an out-of-sessions court and were remanded. Ben Monteath died at a Plowman Court property on May 17 after shots were fired towards the house just after 11pm. A third man had already been charged with murder in relation to Mr Monteath’s death.

Recruits sought for pokies fightWhittlesea residents are being urged to put protest signs on their front fences as part of a campaign against pokies losses in Whittlesea. The Whittlesea Interagency Taskforce on Gambling (WITOG) is targeting three of Victoria’s top 10 pokies venues, Epping Plaza Hotel, the Plough Hotel and Bundoora Hotel, claiming their location close to shopping centres makes them particularly harmful for local residents. WITOG is placing signs on the fences of agency members and wants residents and local businesses in Mill Park, Epping and Bundoora to do the same. Roxburgh Park Primary School pupils took the concept of ‘lollypop people’ to new heights last week.

About 300 pupils invaded their local shopping centre to pledge support for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre last Tuesday.

The students decorated lollypop signs with personal pledges, which the shopping centre will display during September.

The centre partnered with Peter Mac in July to extend awareness about cancer and the supports available.

Kim Boon, mother of four Roxburgh Park pupils and a former oncology nurse, said it

was important young people grew up learning about others and cared about the people in their communities.

School principal Richard Maguire said health education and awareness of others was learned both in and beyond the classroom.

Cancer Council research has found one in two Australian men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.

A Roxburgh Park Shopping Centre team is hoping to take part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer fund-raiser on October 25.

Roadblocks will be a major factor in a review of evacuation issues stemming from February’s Mickleham bushfires.

State government Emergency management inspector-general Tony Pearce has been charged with reviewing road traffic management and access for “appropriate people” into areas affected by fires to ensure animal well-being.

The review comes after last month’s release of emergency management commissioner Craig Lapsley’s analysis of the 2013-14 fire season, which lists traffic management as a key area for overhaul.

Recommended changes should be in place before the next fire season.

In the aftermath of the February fires, residents in fire-affected areas were unable to return to their homes for several days because of roadblocks.

Annie Williams, who runs a wildlife shelter from her Darraweit Guim home, said only emergency service people could pass roadblocks for four days after the fires began.

“It was ridiculous. We could leave to get petrol, but we couldn’t get back in,” she said. “We needed to refuel petrol containers to turn fire pumps on again.”

Macedon Ranges highway patrol officer in charge Sergeant Geoff Neil said roadblocks needed to be locally managed.

“Rather than trying to manage traffic from afar, more notice needed to be taken locally,” he said. “It would have run a lot smoother.

There are seeds, creeds and feeds on Norman Palumbo’s agenda as he invites the community to join him in a conversation about fair trade this week.

Mr Palumbo is the owner and mastermind of Just Planet, a niche cafe in the heart of Sunbury that supports humanitarian causes and is renowned for its backyard produce.

“There are only a few things that bring people together: music, art and food,” he said.

So he decided to “bring people together” with his vine-ripe heirloom tomatoes, fresh herbs and fair-trade coffee.

Six years ago, Mr Palumbo set up a shop inspired by his childhood.

“When I was six, I was collecting aluminium cans to buy a bike,” he said.

“I [heard about] the Ethiopian crisis and decided to split the money and donate some to Ethiopia.”

That was the beginning of a journey to philanthropy for Mr Palumbo, who now tackles political, social and environmental issues at a grassroots level.

What started as an informal seed-swapping saga and passionate conversations about fair-trade has been transformed into the Chat about Fair Food project – a council-based initiative aimed at encouraging locals to get serious about the environment.

“The planet is in a mess and we have to do something about it,” Mr Palumbo said. “We don’t tread on the planet lightly; we trample all over it.”

The school bags of primary and secondary students are considerably lighter this year as more and more Victorian schools swap textbooks for tablets as the learning tools of the future.

But aside from the obvious chiropractic advantages of confining a library of textbooks to a device that weighs less than one kilogram, there remains some confusion among parents about the role of tablets in their child’s education.

According to Apple’s website, the iPad offers more than 75,000 apps just for education. But how are Victorian teachers using them to improve their students’ learning experience?

David Lovatt, the director of e-learning at Parade College in Bundoora, says the overall advantage of using electronic devices is that they engage different learners, which is often half the battle with education.

“iPads deliver that instant gratification that appeals to young people … if they can put a movie together using the device, then they can put it up on Facebook and show people ‘Look what I’ve done’.

Every student in years seven to 10 at Parade College has an iPad to use in all areas of learning. But Mr Lovatt says they are used in some subjects more than others.

with students encouraged to create a video or cartoon strip to record their experiments.

The same applies to English students, who use iMovie and Strip Design to produce text responses through more creative mediums such as video and cartoons.

“If you’ve got a student who has difficulty putting words together, they often find it more beneficial to put together a movie to illustrate their thoughts on a book,” Mr Lovatt says.

As for mathematics, students use revision apps that link homework questions to the section of their textbook that will provide the answer. The app Numbers also allows them to analyse data and create graphs and charts.

Ultimately, Mr Lovatt says the success of a tablet in each subject depends on the teacher.

“If you’ve got a teacher who’s stuck in the old pedagogy, they can find it very difficult,” he says.

“They can’t sit up the front of the room any more and see that the students are on task, they have to get up and move around.” Parade College students use iPads in Class(S

At Santa Maria College in Northcote, teachers began experimenting with a “flipped classroom model”, using iMovie films to introduce information to students on their iPads at home, and using class time for analysis and discussion.

Every student at Santa Maria has an iPad with a suite of apps used for learning activities in all learning areas. They include Evernote for recording research and Keynote for presentations.

The college’s e-learning leader, Simon Gitson, says teachers are also expected to keep abreast of apps that could be of specific use to their subject.

“Recently food technology utilised Pinterest to think about how food is presented, and students created their own Pinterest board to show their learning,” he says.

Both schools chose the iPad over other tablets for its usability and the range of apps on offer.

But Mr Lovatt has left open the possibility of Parade looking into other brands at the end of the year.

“Apple [products] are very user-friendly, and the apps are cheaper, but when we get into industry it’s very PC-based,” he says.

“We will have to assess what we’re hoping to achieve with our curriculum … at the end of this year we’ll be at two years on an iPad, so it’ll be an ideal time to start reviewing it.”

The school trip has come a long way from a week spent camping out at the nearest nature park. Language students conjugate verbs in Paris and Shanghai, humanities classes rub shoulders with the powers that be in Washington DC, and budding artists head to Florence and Rome to inspire their next masterpiece.

The number of overseas study tours schools offer has grown steadily, but the options for overseas travel don’t end there for students.

Immersion trips to developing countries are also becoming popular as an alternative to the study tour. They offer students the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the developing world and the people who live there.

Marcellin College in Bulleen has offered a Cambodian immersion trip to its year 11 students each December for the past three years.

Rana Brogan is director of mission at the school, and a member of the teaching group that developed the program in 2011. She says the 14-day trip to Phnom Penh, Battambang and Pailin embodies the school’s Marist values by offering students the chance to contribute to improving a developing community.

“Being a Catholic school, part of what we draw from that is our call to serve … it’s about going out there and doing the sort of work that Jesus would have done in his day,” she says.

“Part of the experience is to live as the people in that community live, so we don’t stay in five-star hotels or anything … the focus is on building relationships with locals so that people get the sense that we’re here, we’re among them.”

There was nothing five-star about accommodation for Loyola College students Alexandra McGill and Tanya Vo, who have recently returned from an immersion trip to East Timor. The students travelled with representatives of eight Jesuit and Jesuit-partner schools from across Australia, visiting the capital, Dili, as well as the townships of Railaco and Kasait.

Staff member Lisa Hussey accompanied the students to East Timor and says that while the immersion is an important part of the school’s annual fund-raising for developing countries, students get just as much out of it.

“[The students] were able to learn about things such as health care, political stability, global trade, malnutrition … they’ve seen a culture that appreciates their education system and makes sacrifices for their families.”

Tanya Vo says the trip appealed to her more than a language or study tour because of the opportunity to do some hands-on work in the developing world.

“I’ve always wanted to help people in third-world countries like East Timor,” she says.

“My dream is to study international law and social justice, and my experience in East Timor has strengthened my resolve to study harder to achieve that.”

Only one game separates the bottom four clubs as the relegation battle in division 2 of the Northern Football League heads for its climax. With two weeks left in the home-and-away season, the top four positions have been settled, with North Heidelberg to face Fitzroy Stars and Lalor and Mernda to do battle in the first round of the finals. But the situation is far more interesting at the bottom. Hurstbridge entered last weekend’s match in last place but kept survival hopes alive by beating Epping 17.15 (117) to 8.7 (55).

A win for the Pingers would have put them a game clear in fifth spot but Hurstbridge led at every change and extend edits lead by every break.

Aron Burns kicked seven for Hurstbridge, while Aaron Willitts booted three for Epping.

The Pingers this week face Lalor, which was thrashed 19.18 (132) to 5.9 (39) by top side North Heidelberg.

Mernda was also on the wrong side of the ledger, losing 15.13 (103) to 11.4 (70) against Fitzroy Stars.

In division 1, Macleod beat Bundoora 14.10 (94) to 13.10 (88), leaving the Bulls seventh on the ladder a game behind fifth. The Bulls were 27 points down at three-quarter time, but left their run too late, despite four goals each to Cameron Cloke and Gary Moorcroft.

Finals match-ups in division 3 have been decided with one home-and-away round left.

Thomastown, which had a bye at the weekend, will almost certainly finish on top and take on Reservoir in the first week of the finals.

South Morang had a 14.23 (107) to 6.5 (41) win over Parkside, which has indicated that it will seek to rejoin the VAFA next season. Epping, including Lachlan Vella, still has a fight on its hands to avoid relegation. (Wayne Hawkins)

Ben Allan and talls Jayden Foster, Mark Kovacevic and Reilly O’Brien will test their skills in front of AFL recruiters at the combine. VFL players Jake Owen and Adam Saad, who both played with the Cannons, have also been selected. The Cannons will face North Ballarat Rebels on Sunday after a bye this week.

FFVSporting Whittlesea and Hume United were both on the wrong side of the results in the FFV state league 2 north west competition on Saturday. Sporting Whittlesea lost 3-0 to Corio, while Hume United lost 1-0 against Geelong. In state league 3 north west, nine-man Lalor United beat Geelong United 1-0, while Whittlesea United had the bye. In state league 4 north, Upfield lost 1-0 to West Preston, Meadow Park Eagles lost 3-1 to Heidelberg Eagles, Epping City was too good for Parkville Panthers winning 3-0, while Plenty Valley Lions won a high scoring affair against Bundoora United 6-4.

VFLThe Northern Blues were held scoreless in the final quarter of the VFL match against Williamstown on Sunday. And that hurt the Blues, who went from two points down at three-quarter time to losing by 40 points, 14.18 (102) to 9.8 (62). Patrick Cripps and Blaine Johnson scored two goals each for the Blues, who remain 10th on the ladder.
