It was fantastic to see so many parents, grandparents and community members join us to celebrate ‘Education Week’ on 28th May. Visitors made the most of the opportunity to meet our School Education Director, Max Garland, who was pleased to be able to spend the day with us. Thank you to all of those involved in making the day the success it was. The P&C raised $251.90 during the day to donate to the Cancer Council’s ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ fundraiser. On 26th May Lochlan Ireson travelled to Wagga to participate in the Riverina Regional Rugby Union trials. Although Lochie had never played a game of Union before the day, his Rugby League skills came in handy and he played very well. Lochie is looking forward to participating in the trials again next year, when he will have the advantage of being a year older. On 5th June, Ellie Ireson and Samantha Turner represented Hay Small Schools in the District Cross Country at Deniliquin. Both girls ran extremely well, to be placed 3rd and 9th respectively. Ellie’s 3rd placing qualified her to represent Deniliquin District at the Riverina Regional Cross Country in Griffith on 9th June. In very wet and muddy conditions Ellie again ran well to be placed 7th overall in her age group. With the first 6 place getters qualifying to represent the Riverina Region, Ellie is the first reserve for the 9 year old girls. On 11th June I represented Booligal Public School at the Lachlan Catchment Natural Resource Management Awards night, which was held in Forbes. The school was nominated for the Education Award, for raising the students’ awareness of environmental issues through activities such as planting fruit trees at the school, maintaining our own vegetable garden, participating in Stream Watch and the P&C running the Carp fishing competition. Although we weren’t the recipient of the Award, it was great that the school received recognition for our environmental focus. Last week we were joined by La Trobe University student, Chantal Fitzsimons. Chantal was participating in the ‘Beyond the Line’ program, which the Department of Education runs each year, trying to encourage University graduates to work in rural areas. Chantal was amazed at how well the school is resourced, and enjoyed working with our students, who are so eager to learn. Chantal is now considering working in rural areas in the future. During her three days with us, Chantal worked with students in the classroom, and provided invaluable assistance at the Athletics training and Carnival. We wish Chantal all the best for her upcoming teaching career, and hope to see her working in a rural location! Last Thursday Booligal Public School students participated in the Hay Small Schools Athletics Carnival at Hay. Heritage Excursion On Thursday 18th June we went on a heritage excursion to Hay. We went because we have been learning about places, heritage

and history in HSIE.

In the morning we got in the car and drove to Hay. Belinda Booth and Mrs Bunyan drove us straight to the Dunera Museum where we met Miss Baker and David Houston. David gave us a tour through the carriages. We saw old photos, things that the prisoners of war had made and old belt buckles and forks. David told us a funny story about the night everybody thought that the prisoners

were going to escape.

David took us to our next site, the Hay Gaol. Laura Bunyan met us there to show us around. We saw the old prison cells and in the cells there were an old dress, some old guns, an old power outlet, a wooden windmill, a big old saw, an old motorbike, lots of pis-tols, and old relics like bottles. David and Laura showed us where a prisoner of war cut through the bars to escape. After the

tour we had recess in the courtyard, and we learnt that the solitary confinement cell was the toughest cell in Australia.

Next, Miss Baker took us on a heritage walk around Hay. First we saw the Sunbeam Coach and the old horse trough, and then we visited places like the old Fire Station, the Lands Office, where the Majestic Theatre was, Japp’s Pharmacy and the Presentation

Convent where the nuns used to live. Seeing all of the sites was fun and a great way to learn about the history of Hay.

Later on, we went to Bishop’s Lodge where we met Jo. She showed us around the house. We saw the kitchen, the laundry, the bedrooms, a man hole where the boys climbed up, the bathroom, Mary’s bedroom, the kerosene fridge and the chapel room. Jo

showed us where some naughty boys had damaged the marble fire place.

Afterwards, we ate our lunch on the veranda and then we played tips in the magic garden where the fairies live.

In the afternoon we went to Shear Outback. First we went into the photo room. Then we went down the passage way and saw the old machinery. We also looked in the exhibition room where we used shearing equipment and sniffed the smell wall. Then we walked over to the Murray Downs shearing shed. We went into the round up maze and we got lost. Miss Baker told us we could

have a lolly if we didn’t cheat.

That was the end of the day. We got back into the cars and stopped off at Hill’s corner store to get a lolly before driving back to

Booligal. We had lots of fun and it was a great learning experience.

Thank you to our guides; David, Laura and Jo. We would also like to thank Belinda and Mrs Bunyan for driving us down. Thank you

to Miss Baker for organising the exciting excursion.

HAY SMALL SCHOOLS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2009

On Wednesday 1st July, the students of Booligal Public School joined Carrathool Public School and Hay School of The Air at Hay Park. Sarah Young, a teacher from Ed-ward Public School in Deniliquin, who has a background in Athletics, was on hand to train all of the students in preparation for the following day’s athletics carnival. Primary and infants students rotated in groups, practis-ing the movement skills required for field events such as high jump, long jump, shot put, discus, and the running races. The Small Schools are very lucky to have Sarah Young join them each year and many thanks are extended to Sarah for her great skill, effort and enthusiasm. The day was also made enjoyable due to the presence of par-ent helpers from SOTA and Chantal and Tina, students

from the Beyond the Line program.

The next day was another cold, gusty day. The Booligal students arrived nervous and excited, keen for the days activities. The morning began with the 800m and 100m races. The junior girl 800m was an exciting race with Ellie setting the pace for the majority of the track. With a dashing sprint finish, Sam was able to just scrape over the line first by a fraction. All students raced their hearts out in their

respective 100m (70m for infants) and 200m age races.

After a short recess break, and some nice treats prepared by the parents, the students returned to the field for the field events. Students rotated around the various events with parent and family helpers and a crowd of other supporters. Some notable per-formances include Jack in hurdles, Isaac, Heidi and Lochlan in discus, Pip and Natalie in long jump, Max, Ellie and Sam in high jump. The students displayed great sportsmanship throughout the various field events and are to be congratulated for the super effort

they demonstrated at each rotation.

A delicious sausage sizzle prepared by the parents was enjoyed by all at lunch time. The students were given a play break also and it was great to see the students socialising with the students from the other schools. Experiences such as the Athletics Carnival are

a great opportunity for the students to develop friendships and for the parents and families to catch up.

The only event left was the mini-schools relay. Booligal, Carrathool and SOTA entered their four fastest primary-aged sprinters. The crowd went wild as the gun sounded for the beginning of the race, just as the rain began to pour. Ellie set a good pace for Boo-ligal as she passed the baton onto Natalie who zoomed towards Lochie. Lochie raced around the bend to hand the baton to Sam. Booligal was placed a close third. A fantastic effort for the runners involved after a belly-full of food who managed to not drop the

baton in the slippery conditions!

The spectators and students huddled under the veranda for a final presentation. Isaac was awarded Infants Boys Champion and Samantha was awarded Junior Girls Champion. Despite their best efforts and some blitzing performances, Booligal P.S. missed out of the Champion School trophy which was awarded to Carrathool P.S. Congratulations to

Carrathool!

We would like to thank Hay SOTA for organising the carnival and the students of SOTA, Carrathool and Booligal for making the day very enjoyable. Thanks also to the parents and other family members for being wonderful helpers and spectators. We all had such a

great day, even the rain didn’t even manage to dampen our spirits!

The School of St Jude

The staff, students and parents of Booligal Public School are organising to spon-sor a student from the School of St Jude, in Tanzania. The school was established by a farm girl from Guyra, Gemma Rice, to provide education for the poorest children in Tanzania. We believe that we are so lucky in Australia, that all children receive a quality education for free. Unfortunately, the same opportunities do not exist for children in all countries. The school can be seen on the official website:

http://www.schoolofstjude.co.tz/

We have a couple of connections to Gemma and the school already—Gemma’s mother used to spend time in Booligal as a child, with Jenny Clark (nee Naugh-

ton) and Catherine’s cousin is married to Gemma’s brother.

Anyone who wishes to join with us to provide sponsorship of a child, a teacher

or a bus, or to make a one-off donation is urged to contact the school ASAP.
