A great number of benefits have been reported to support the theory of teaching kindness in schools and encouraging parents to do the same at home. Scientific studies have shown that kindness has a great number of physical and emotional benefits, and that children require a healthy dose of giving and receiving kindness in order to flourish as health, happy, well-rounded individuals. Patty O’Grady, PhD believes that “Kindness changes the brain … Kindness is best learned by feeling it. Kindness is an emotion that students feel and empathy is a strength that they share.”

8 Reasons to Teach Kindness 1. HappinessScience explains that the good feelings we experience when being kind are produced by endorphins that activate areas of the brain that are associated with pleasure, social connection and trust, and it’s proven that these feelings of joyfulness are contagious, encouraging more kind behaviour by the giver and recipient.

2. Acceptance and FriendshipResearch shows that kindness increases our ability to form meaningful connections with others. Studies show that kind, happy children enjoy greater peer acceptance and that better than average mental health.

3. Improved Health and Less Stress It’s widely documented that being kind can trigger a release of the hormone oxytocin which has a number of physical and mental

health benefits as it can significantly increase a person’s level of happiness and reduce stress. It also protects the heart by lowering blood pressure and reducing free radicals and inflammation (which incidentally speed up the aging process).

4. Sense of Belonging and Improved Self EsteemStudies show that people experience a ‘helpers high’ when they do a good deed, a rush of endorphins that creates a lasting sense of pride, well-being and an enriched sense of belonging. Even small acts of kindness are reported to heighten our sense of well-being, increase energy and give a feeling of optimism and self-worth.

5. GratitudeWhen children are part of projects that help others less fortunate than themselves, it provides them with a real sense of perspective and helps them appreciate the good things in their own lives.

6. Better Concentration and Improved ResultsAs it increases serotonin, which plays an important part in learning, memory, mood, sleep, health and digestion, kindness helps children feel good. Having a positive outlook allows them greater attentions spans and enables more creative thinking to produce better results at schoolFrom article by Lisa Currie, Ripple Kindness Project

Principal’s ReportKindness Is Something Students Learn By Feeling It

Whilst academic learning is important, success in life is also determined by many other skills that can be taught and modelled for children, and can significantly improve the quality of their lives and relationships over the long term. One of these skills is kindness. Many organisations around the world recognize June as Kindness month.

The Robot That May Save Tassie Devils! The Tasmanian Devil group built a small car that goes around while the Tasmanian Devil is sleeping. It sprays them with a sedative spray to stop them from biting each other and spreading the tumors, which leads to cancer which is killing the population. It also takes the infected food so they can’t get sick in the first place. The project started in mid 2019. They are making the robot so the Tasmanian Devils don’t go extinct. They are making it with LEGO and ipads. The entirety of year 6 at MWPS are making robots like this one. They are making the robots so they can hopefully get funding from the government.

6E STEM: ROBOTS

The Robot That Can Save VulturesOn the 12th of June,2019. A group of Year 6 students( Elyssa, Evie, Mark, Olivia, Jessie and Clayton) created a robot made out of Lego that can save vultures. They are saving vultures from dying of the disease from the animal they are eating. So they built a robot that will pick up a dead animal and scan it for a disease. If it is infected, it will take it and learn about how to stop it. If it doesn’t, it will leave it for the vultures to feed on. Elyssa said: “this robot could help save vultures because they worked really hard on it and they are positive it will save them.”How did they do it? Mark (one of the students in the group) says: “It took a lot of work to make the Lego prototype but we are very happy with the outcome, and we put a lot of hard work into it.” This is just their first draft so they haven’t perfected their ideas or the robot yet but they have done an amazing job so far.

MUSICupdateThere has been a lot of CAPA (Creative &Performing Arts) activity at school in the last few weeks. Stage 1 excitedly attended the live stage performance of the show,“Me & My Shadow”, at Parramatta Riverside Theatre. They were the final group to go, as part of a whole school program that has given the opportunity for every child in the school to experience live, high quality theatre. Simultaneously, 6E and Vietnamese LOTE students were able to experience the excitement of being an audience member for a live streamed performance of À Ố Làng Phố, a contemporary Vietnamese circus that dramatically portrayed a peaceful, traditional Vietnamese village gradually being transformed into a modernised, bustling cityLast week also saw our school host Band Fest where our students were able to share rehearsals, performance and pizza with the Wollongong City Band. The day culminated in a performance conducted by our conductor Kyle Eardley and Instrumental Tutor Marcus Rook. This week members of the Descant and Treble Recorder groups, will be heading off to a combined schools rehearsal in preparation for their Sydney Opera House concert as part of the Festival Of Instrumental Music (FoIM) 2019 and the Senior Choir, conducted by Thomasin Litchfield, will be attending rehearsals in preparation for the Cantabile Choral Festival, at the Sydney Opera House, early next term. Year 5 has been developing their mask making skills over the last few weeks.

In science, the students had a go at the dashbots. Both classes were really engaged and loved coming up with their own robot games.

First the children designed their masks and now we’ve been busily building up layers of papier mache to bring their design to life.

Breaking News-Kidnapping Kids – by Annie 6C At about 8 am this morning, Principal Bradfield Ling from MWPS received an important call from the Police about a MWPS student incident. The Police were amazed by a brave girl who had successfully escaped the kidnapper. “I was walking to school on School Parade when a strange man approached,” said Carmen.

Man-sized slug goes on raging rampage through M.W.P.Sby Beatrix 6CLate morning on Tuesday,19th June during year five’s science lesson, they discovered a man-sized slug. It destroyed three of their desks and almost ate their teacher alive. The year fives cheered but were deeply disappointed when she emerged from its mouth.“I was really disappointed when Mrs. Hulm came out of the slug’s mouth, but it was funny to see her covered in bright green slime.”, said Louis.“We have discovered that the colossus-slugas* was a result of a chemical reaction between orange scented hand soap and compost that the slug digested, mutating the slug to a man-sized, blood thirsty, bone crushing mutant.”, said the Head of Science from the Australian Science Academy. *colossus-slugas: scientific name for the giant slug

Scientists Discover A New Disease Spreading through Marrickville West Teacher’s Lounge – by Eloise 6COn the 16th of June Mr. Iain Sinclair headed to the RPA Hospital, and the CSIRO lab, for testing on his tongue disease. Mr. Evans said, “I am very glad I was not at school on the day of the tragedy. I am also very glad no students were harmed.”, he added.Head Scientist, John Zark at the CSIRO commented that, “After a lot of research, study, testing, math and more hard work, we have the classification, name, and antidote to this strange disease. Toartz. T-O-A-R-T-Z. Tongue warts are a contagious and highly uncomfortable disease.”, added Zark.Mrs. Valerie Dinkencher, Chief and Head Proffessor at TWAKI, thinks that the Toartz were caused by the artificial coffee and sugars in the staffroom. The teacher’s lounge has introduced a brand-new coffee grinder, coffee machine and some organic coffee beans as a result. Mrs Ruth Bradfield-Ling, Principal of Marrickville West, thinks that the teachers in hospital are merely pretending, and should be back at school quick sharp or she might have to fire them all. On the lighter side, the teachers will be equipped with an antidote* and a brand-new coffee machine. Unfortunately, Mr. Cameron and Ms. Gerry are currently in a coma from loss of artificial coffee and deep sorrow.*minced rotten cantaloupe and maggots

Cooking, Food And SavingAs a part of Linking Women to Learning with Olivetree Women’s Network, we’ve had 3 sessions on Financial Literacy. Fatima Kourouche gave a practical session on how to make a soup for less than $2, that can serve up to 10 people, so its 20 cents a serve. Its not only cheap but nutritious, delicious, vegetarian and children love it.We learned about saving by buying in larger quantities, which may be suitable for larger families or for food that lasts. The Vietnamese Mothers Group had a session with Louie from SROC on “Love Food Hate Waste”. Do you know that the average Australian throws out over $3000 worth of food each year?So the message from Louie, is go through your fridge, get some vegies to last longer by wrapping them in a slightly moist cloth in a paper bag, never go shopping when you are hungry, and shop to supplement the food you already have. He demonstrated how to bake leftovers such as mushrooms, capsicums, sweet potatoes, and add them to couscous with a squeeze of lemon and mint. Children scoffed it down.Emily Ninnes from Good Shepherd is running 2 sessions that challenge our perceptions of money, and find new ways to look at it. Firmer Foundations at Good Shepherd, Marrickville is a free service to assist financial wellbeing for women and girls. They provided workshops and one on one mentoring.

PROJECT OVERVIEW Under the banner of the Cooks River Arts & Cultural Alliance (CRACA), Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club has formed a “School Super Rock Band” to perform as the support act at the “1979” show on Sat 27th July. The process of forming this band involved students from the above local public schools auditioning across 3 sessions. This was run by professional musicians/performers from the 1979 show who have selected 10 students who are now rehearsing over 5 weeks to perform 4 songs. Bring along your family, friends and co-workers to share this special event with us. We are planning to make this an annual program to showcase the amazing talent in local public schools within our community.

For any queries please contact Paul Kougias, Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club, [email protected] or 0427 009 656
