SUPPORT SERVICES

Your child will have access to the following support services during their study at a NSW government school:

International student coordinator

NSW government schools have a dedicated and caring international student coordinator who will be your child’s first point of contact. The coordinator will conduct orientation programs, introduce your child to key staff at the school and provide ongoing support throughout your child’s enrolment at the school.

Year adviser

Each academic level is assigned a year adviser who monitors the academic progress of all students in that level. The year adviser works closely with the school’s welfare team and your child’s classroom teachers to help your child achieve academic success.

Careers adviser

The careers adviser provides guidance to students in areas such as subject selection, preparation for entering the workforce, career

planning and selecting appropriate tertiary study options.

Homework centres

Homework centres provide free tutoring for students after school hours. Teachers supervise your child with their homework and provide advice on any queries they may have regarding coursework.

ESL teacher

English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers provide ongoing specialist assistance to students during their enrolment in a high school. They teach students the English language and literacy skills needed in all subjects.

Student welfare team

The welfare head teacher looks after the welfare of all students. They help your child to settle into their school and help them with any personal or study related issues. Student welfare teams provide counselling and guidance as required. All matters discussed will be very confidential.

Bilingual staff

Many of our schools have bilingual staff that will be able to

communicate with parents and guardians in their own language.

UNIFORM

NSW government schools have a uniform policy. Students must wear the school uniform as part of the school rules or code of conduct. Schools will provide you with information about their uniform requirements.

A typical uniform would include a school jumper or sweater, with grey or navy trousers and white shirt for boys, and a skirt or trousers in school colours with white shirt for girls. A school uniform usually costs between A$150 and A$200.

SCHOOL HOURS

School hours are generally between 9:00am and 3:30pm Monday to Friday. Strict attendance is required. Students are allocated homework and assignments to be completed outside school hours. This homework is compulsory and contributes to your child’s overall assessment.

ACCOMMODATION

Students perform better in school when they live in a supportive family environment so the NSW Department of Education and Communities (DEC) requires international students under 18 years of age to live with a parent or approved guardian or carer.

Primary school students in Kindergarten to Year 4 must live with one or both parents for the duration of their studies and students in Year 5 and Year 6 may live with a parent or direct relative approved by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).

High school students in Year 7 and Year 8 must live with a parent or a nominated direct relative. Students in Years 9 to 12 who choose not to live with a parent or direct relative must live in DEC approved homestay accommodation.

If you choose to place your child with an approved NSW government schools homestay provider, your child will be welcomed from their arrival at Sydney International Airport and supported by a caring family during their studies.

HOMESTAY

Parent nomination of homestay

For students enrolling in Years 9 to 12, parents may nominate a distant family member or close family friend for DEC to approve as a guardian and homestay host. This nomination must meet minimum required standards to be approved.

What is homestay accommodation?

A homestay is a welcoming family accepting overseas students to live as a part of their family. A homestay family can be an individual, couple or family. Homestay accommodation is a unique opportunity for an international student to stay in the home of an Australian family and to learn more about Australian culture.

Why choose homestay?

Homestay accommodation provides:

• students with a safe place to live

• the opportunity to improve English language skills

• a unique opportunity to experience life with an Australian family

• a caring family environment.

All homestay families have undergone police checks and are monitored by a homestay provider registered with DEC.

How to choose a homestay family?

You will be asked by a DEC registered homestay provider to provide detailed information on your child’s preferences. The homestay provider will then match and place your child with a suitable family. The homestay provider will find a homestay family within reasonable travelling distance to your child’s school.

What to expect?

A homestay family provides:

• a furnished bedroom inside the family home

• all meals including food to make a light lunch on school days

• furniture includes a bed, study table and chair

• use of household facilities such as laundry.

As a member of the family, students can expect to contribute with some family chores, including tidying their bedroom and clearing the table after meals.

Students need strong English language skills to excel in their studies. A NSW government school Intensive English Centre (IEC) prepares your child for study in all school subjects. The program develops English language skills so your child transitions to mainstream high school with confidence.

The IEC introduces students to the school system and provides orientation, English language tuition and welfare support.

Advantages of enrolling in an NSW government school IEC:

• Study in a small class (maximum 18 students)

• Learn intensive English within the school campus and through the school curriculum

• Assist students to settle quickly and provide support through our transition program to high school

• Participate in school activities with partner high schools

• Access to school counsellors and welfare support

• Use of all school facilities.

University trained and fully-qualified English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers provide lessons in English for key high school subjects. Your child will be placed in an IEC class based on their age and current English language skills.

Intensive English programs are conducted throughout the school term. Students typically require two terms to transition to their mainstream course.

The primary school program for international students is available at selected schools. All primary schools are co-educational.

Primary school education in NSW consists of seven years. It begins in Kindergarten (5 years of age) and ends in Year 6 (12 years of age).

Entry requirements

• There are no English language entry requirements for primary school children in Kindergarten to Year 5. Students 12 years of age or over may need to do an Intensive English program before they start the Year 6 course.

• It is a condition of enrolment for children in Kindergarten (5 years of age) to Year 4 (10 years of age) that they must reside with a parent during their enrolment.

• Children enrolled in Years 5 and 6 can reside with a parent or a direct relative approved by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).

Your child can start any time up to the beginning of Term 4 (October) of the academic year.

SENIOR SECONDARY HIGH SCHOOL • Years 11 and 12 CRICOS CODE: 073980K

International students who enrol in senior secondary school (Years 11 and 12) and successfully complete the course are awarded a Higher School Certificate (HSC).

NSW government schools enable your child to develop the necessary skills and knowledge they need to complete the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) successfully. The HSC is a highly valued, internationally recognised credential.

The HSC is a two-year program with assessment tasks in each subject, practical work or fieldwork for some subjects and a final external written examination in each course at the end of Year 12.

Most subjects offer two unit courses. Students are required to study a minimum of 12 units in Year 11 and a minimum of 10 units in Year 12.

AUSTRALIAN TERTIARY ADMISSION RANK (ATAR)

The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is the highest award in secondary education in New South Wales. To be eligible for the award, students must complete Years 11 and 12, satisfy HSC course requirements and sit for the statewide HSC examinations.

The HSC results are used by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) to calculate a rank order of students known as the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). The ATAR is not a mark, nor is it a summary of the HSC. It is a ranking system used to allocate university placements for students seeking enrolments in Australian universities.

STUDY TOURS

For groups of students or teachers wanting a short educational program, we can arrange a Study Tour. Programs are customised to the needs of the group and may include visiting schools, participating in classes, excursions and special events conducted in the school or local community.

Group size

The minimum group size is 10 students. Large groups may be hosted by two or more schools.

Age

Students must be at least 10 years of age.

Duration

Student study tours can range in length from half a day to 12 weeks.

What does it cost?

The Study Abroad program allows your child to enjoy a short-term Australian study experience. This program is offered at selected NSW government schools. Students may enrol at the beginning of any academic term and may receive credits for the duration of study in their home school.

REVIEW OF TUITION FEESNSW Department of Education and Communities reserves the right to review its fees. If tuition fees are increased you will be required to pay the new fees as they are introduced. If you defer your course, you will be required to pay the fees which apply at your new commencement date.

SCHOOL FEE PAYMENTNew Students must pay:• Application fee

• Overseas Student Health Cover

• Fees specified in the DEC International invoice which will be no more than 50% of the total tuition fees for the course of study or fees paid for a study period whichever is the greater.

Continuing Students must pay:• Fees specified in the DEC International invoice by the due date.Refund PolicyApplication fees, airport pick-up fee and accommodation placement fee are not refundable.

Tuition fees are not refundable if:• The student fails to comply with the conditions of enrolment at the school or

English Language Centre

• The student is enrolled in Year 12 in a NSW government school. Students in Year 12 are regarded as enrolled for the whole year and are not entitled to a refund for Term 4 tuition fees

• The student breaches the visa requirements of his or her visa as imposed by the Australian government

• The student/parent provides false, inaccurate or misleading information

• The student withdraws during the TAFE NSW English Language Centre English for High School Preparation program. No refund will be given for the English language component.

Part or whole of the fees are refundable for NSW Government Schools under the following circumstances:• 100% of school tuition fees paid will be refunded if the student is refused a

visa before commencing the course

• If the student commences study at a NSW government school before the student visa application has been processed and it is subsequently rejected, a pro rata refund of tuition fees paid will be made

• A fee of 20% of the fees paid for up to one study period will be charged to cover administration costs and charges if the student is withdrawn by the parent or legal guardian* for any reason prior to the proposed commencement at the school

• If the student is withdrawn by the parent or legal guardian* for any reason on or after the student’s proposed commencement date at a school, the parent or legal guardian* must give notice of at least one school term duration in advance. A refund of fees will only apply to a term that has not commenced and only after the expiration of one term’s written notice. (For example: if a current term has commenced, the following term will be considered as the notice period and fees paid for it will not be refunded, only fees paid for a term beyond the first two terms will be refunded). Additionally, a fee equal to 20% of the fees paid for up to one study period will be charged to cover administrative costs and expenses

• If the student becomes an Australian permanent resident, the student will be entitled to a full refund of the remaining fees from the date the student became an Australian permanent resident

• If the student becomes an Australian temporary resident, the student will have to pay fees under the Temporary Residents Program.

Part or whole of the tuition fees are refundable for the TAFE NSW English Language component of the combined TAFE NSW English Language and High School packaged course under the following circumstances:• 100% of the tuition fees paid will be refunded if a student is refused a visa

• 90% of the tuition fees paid will be refunded if a student withdraws 4 weeks (28 days) or more PRIOR to the commencement date of their English course

• 80% of the tuition fees paid will be refunded if a student withdraws within the final 4 weeks (28 days) PRIOR to the commencement date of their English course

• If a student completes the English course earlier than expected, the remainder of fees for sessions not commenced will be transferred to the government school. Each session is 5 weeks in duration.

PROVIDER DEFAULTIn the unlikely event that NSW Department of Education and Communities is unable to deliver the intended course, you will be offered a refund of the unused portion of prepaid course fees. The refund will be paid to you within 2 weeks of the day on which the course ceased being provided. Students who are unable to study their preferred subjects will be offered placement at another NSW government school.

Refund Procedures

• Requests for refunds must be made in writing by the parent or legal guardian* to the NSW Department of Education and Communities.

• Refunds will be processed within four (4) weeks from receipt of the written request if it includes all required information.

• A written statement will be provided to the student to explain how the refund is calculated.

* Legal guardian does not include the guardian/carer approved by Immigration or the Department of Education and Communities as required for a student visa

Expectations of NSW government schools

NSW government schools will:

• Provide the student with the same level of instruction and educational services as normally provided to other students of the schools enrolled at the same year level

• Provide an orientation program for the student

• Monitor the welfare of the student and provide counselling and ongoing support while the student is enrolled at the school

• Provide a minimum of two written school reports a year (sent to the parents and carer)

• Appoint one or more staff member(s) to act as point of contact for students, who have access to up-to-date details of support services for students

• Provide English as a Second Language support for the student at school, if required

• Approve accommodation and welfare arrangements for students under 18 years, if requested, and paid for by parents and assist in the arrangement of homestay and airport reception through DEC approved homestay providers

• Pay commission to an agent registered with NSW Department of Education and Communities

• Receive commission from health insurance providers for the processing of overseas students health cover fees.

Expectations of the TAFE NSW English Language Centres (if student is enrolled in English for High School Preparation)

TAFE NSW English Language Centres will:

• Provide intensive English language preparation for high school

• Arrange for the student to be met at Sydney Airport by a representative of TAFE NSW or the nominated homestay provider (if any), and for the student to be accompanied to the nominated accommodation, if this has been requested and paid for by the parent.

Expectations of Students

The student:

• Must commence school enrolment on the date stated on the Confirmation of Enrolment and if this is not possible notify DEC International in writing within 24 hours of the start date on the Confirmation of Enrolment.

• Is subject to the requirements of the ESOS Act 2000 and National Code 2007 and must comply with the school enrolment conditions and requirements in respect of international students

• Must comply with student visa requirements and Australian laws

• Must reside at approved accommodation while under 18 years and comply with homestay requirements

• Must meet attendance and course requirements

• Must not engage in any activity that may endanger the safety of themselves or any other persons

• Must return books and materials which are the property of the school when they complete the course or withdraw

• Must return laptop computers if they leave the school or withdraw prior to the end of Year 12.

Expectations of the Parent and Student over 18

The parent and any student over 18 must:

• Ensure the student obtains the appropriate student visa

• Ensure requirements are met and maintained for accommodation and welfare arrangements for students under 18 years

• Notify the DEC International and the school immediately if the student’s studies are terminated, or there are any changes to the student’s visa status

• Ensure any change to the student’s address (unless arranged through DEC) is advised in writing to the school within 7 days

• Ensure that at least one parent or a relative who is able to provide parental care and supervision is living with the student (if the student is enrolled in Years 7 or 8)

• Ensure that at least one parent lives with the student (if the student is enrolled in primary school)

• Pay the required fees.

No Obligation

The Department of Education and Communities does not represent or guarantee that the student will:

• Be accepted for enrolment at a specific school

• Successfully complete studies undertaken

• Successfully complete the NSW Higher School Certificate (Year 12)

• Gain entry into a tertiary institution.

Complaints Procedure

If the student or parent has any complaint(s) about the services provided by the school or the relevant fees, attempts should be made to resolve the problem with the relevant staff before lodging the complaint. Full details of the complaints procedure is available from the DEC International website www.internationalschool.edu.au. So far as relevant, complaints will be handled upon the same basis as a complaint from a student or parent ordinarily resident in NSW.

Breach of Terms and Conditions

Any breach of these terms and conditions may result in the termination of the student’s enrolment.
