“That Ye Might Believe That Jesus Is the Christ”

Isaiah 9:6

Jesus was in very deed the great Jehovah of the Old Testament, who left His Father’s royal courts on high andcondescended to come to earth as a babe born in the most humble of circumstances. His birth was foretold

centuries earlier by Isaiah, who declared prophetically, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and

the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mightyGod, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

This Jesus Christ of whom we solemnly testify is, as John the Revelator declared, “the faithful witness, and

the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth.” He “loved us, and washed us from oursins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory anddominion for ever and ever” (Revelation 1:5–6).( Gordon B. Hinckley, "We Testify of Jesus Christ", Ensign,

Luke 4: 16-21 John the Baptist Describes The Mission of The Savior

The Prophet Joseph Smith Describes John The Baptist Mission“I attended [a] meeting at the Temple [on January 29, 1843]. … I stated that there were two questions which

had been asked me concerning my subject of the last Sabbath, which I had promised to answer in public, and

would improve this opportunity.“The question arose from the saying of Jesus—‘Among those that are born of women there is not a greater

prophet than John the Baptist; but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.’ [ Luke 7:28.] Howis it that John was considered one of the greatest of prophets? His miracles could not have constituted his

greatness. [See John 10:41.]“First. He was entrusted with a divine mission of preparing the way before the face of the Lord. Whoever had

such a trust committed to him before or since? No man.

“Secondly. He was entrusted with the important mission, and it was required at his hands, to baptize the Sonof Man. Whoever had the honor of doing that? Whoever had so great a privilege and glory? Whoever led the

Son of God into the waters of baptism, and had the privilege of beholding the Holy Ghost descend in the form

of a dove, or rather in the sign of the dove, in witness of that administration? The sign of the dove wasinstituted before the creation of the world, a witness for the Holy Ghost… “Thirdly. John, at that time, was the

only legal administrator in the affairs of the kingdom there was then on the earth, and holding the keys of

power. The Jews had to obey his instructions or be damned, by their own law; and Christ Himself fulfilled allrighteousness in becoming obedient to the law which He had given to Moses on the mount, and therebymagnified it and made it honorable, instead of destroying it. The son of Zacharias wrested the keys, the

kingdom, the power, the glory from the Jews, by the holy anointing and decree of heaven, and these three

reasons constitute him the greatest prophet born of a woman..’ (“Chapter 6: The Mission of John the Baptist,”

John 1:1-11 The Apostle John Declares to the World Who Jesus Is.

A large crowd followed the Savior as He ministered by the shore of the Sea of Galilee. So that more could

hear Him, He got into Peter’s fishing boat and asked to be taken a little way out from the shore. After He hadfinished speaking, He told Peter, who had fished all night without success, to go out in the lake and let down

his nets in the deep water. Peter obeyed, and he caught so many fish that the nets broke. Peter called to his

partners, James and John, to come and help. All were amazed at the number of fish that were caught. Jesus

said to Peter, “Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.” Luke then tells us, “When they had brought

their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.”1

They became the Lord’s disciples. The word for disciple and the word for discipline both come from the same Latin root—discipulus, which

means pupil. It emphasizes practice or exercise. Self-discipline and self-control are consistent and permanent

characteristics of the followers of Jesus, as exemplified by Peter, James, and John, who indeed “forsook all,and followed him.”

What is discipleship? It is primarily obedience to the Savior. Discipleship includes many things. It is chastity.

It is tithing. It is family home evening. It is keeping all the commandments. It is forsaking anything that is notgood for us.( James E. Faust, "Discipleship", Ensign, Nov. 2006, 20–23)

John 1:26-35-42

You remember the account of John the Baptist speaking to John the Beloved and to Andrew on the occasion

when the Savior met them. And John the Baptist commented, “Behold the Lamb of God!” (John 1:36). And as

the Savior met those young men—John the Baptist, John the Beloved, and Andrew—He said, “What seek ye?” And in that conversation that’s reported, one of them said, “Where dwellest thou?” (John 1:38).

And the Savior said, “Come and see” (John 1:39).

They followed the Savior, and according to that brief account that we have, they stayed with Him until the10th hour. They may have spent the evening together, but it is not known where He was staying or what

accommodations He might have had. John and Andrew were with the Savior for several hours. Just imaginebeing in His presence or being able to sit and look into His eyes or to hear Him explain who He was and whyHe had come to earth and to hear that inflection in His voice in describing what He would have told those

young men. They would have shaken His hand. They would have felt of that precious, wonderful personality

as they listened to Him. And following that encounter, the account says that Andrew went to find his brother

Simon because he had to share it with someone. As we meet in a great conference like this and talk about thegospel and talk about our responsibility and the opportunity we have, just imagine if that had happened to any

of us, to have been in that divine precious personality’s presence and to have listened to Him and to have

shaken His hand and to have looked into His eyes and to have heard what He would say.( David B. Haight,“Gratitude and Service,” Ensign, May 2001, 70)

John 20:31 Why John Recorded his Words

NEW TESTAMENT OVERVIEW

• The Gospels (Matthew, Mark , Luke, and John), which are a record and witness of Jesus Christ’s life, mission, and teachings.

• The book of Acts, which is an account of the ministry of the Apostles after Jesus’ death and Resurrection. This book focuses on Peter’s work among the Jews and Paul’s work among the Gentiles .

• The epistles (letters) of Paul and other Church leaders, written to instruct and edify the Saints of theirtime.

• The Lord’s revelation to the Apostle John on the isle of Patmos.

Conclusion

We need not visit the Holy Land to feel him close to us. We need not walk by the shores of Galilee or among

the Judean hills to walk where Jesus walked. In a very real sense, all can walk where Jesus walked when, withhis words on our lips, his spirit in our hearts, and his teachings in our lives, we journey through mortality.

I would hope that we would walk as he walked—with confidence in the future, with an abiding faith in his

Father, and a genuine love for others… Shall we have the faith, even the desire, to walk these pathways whichJesus walked? God’s prophet, seer, and revelator has this day invited us to do so. All we need do is follow

him, for this is the pathway he walks. (Thomas S. Monson, “The Paths Jesus Walked,” Ensign, May 1974, 48)
