Practical Plastics NT Pty LtdPractical Plastics NT Pty Ltd is the Darwin rainwater tank, chemical tank and treatment tank specialist.

A local company, we have been manufacturing water, chemical and treatment tanks in a great variety of sizes and colors since 1990. We have been supplying not only the Darwin and outer Darwin areas, but also exporting our tanks around Australia and overseas.

All products manufactured by Practical Plastics NT Pty Ltd are made from virgin, food grade approved polyethylene and are of export quality.

We pride ourselves in providing a high quality, durable, UV protected product that is maintenance free and proudly supported by our pro rata 20 year warranty.

Tank DesignThe structural design of Practical Plastic’s 36,500 litre water tank was independently analysed using Finite Element Analysis. This is a sophisticated computerised technique for engineers and designers to analyse stress and heat transfer characteristics of structural components. Tests carried out in the U.K. have shown that tanks in other countries are approaching 30 years of service and are showing no signs of failure. Carefully programmed manufacturing process ensures maximum base wall thickness where it needs it most.

We look forward to supplying your requirements for tanks and offering you a reliable and friendly service.

The Material...

Australia’s climatic conditions are some of the toughest in the world. Australian manufactured hexane polyethylene has been formulated to provide maximum UV radiation protection and is specifically designed to suit the needs of rotationally moulded tanks in Australia.

If you are replacing old tanks or planning new ones, you should consider your options. You will find that tanks and troughs moulded from polyethylene are:

• UV resistant for Australian conditions• made from the only linear low density polyethylene produced in Australia

Practical Plastics NT Pty Ltd manufactures water tanks to comply to standards - ASTM D:1998-91 and AS/NZS4766 (Int):2002, FDA CFR21 (USA).

All polymer used is tank grade and approved for the storage of food and potable water with UV24. All materials are of Australian origin and manufacture. Practical Plastic NT Pty Ltd tanks are one piece construction for tough, stress free and overall construction strength and ease of installation.

Export & Chemical Quality

Practical Plastics NT Pty Ltd manufacture heavy duty chemical tanks (SG 1.5) for export. Thesetanks are used as chemical storage in day time temperatures exceeding 35 degrees celcius. They are also used for mixing corrosive liquids.

Our tanks have been used internationally for over 10 years and have shown their strength andquality to withstand extreme stress.

Installation Guide

Thank you for purchasing a Practical Plastics tank. With care your tank will give you good service for many years.

1. The tanks can be sited directly on the ground providing that the ground is level and free from rocks and sharp objects. The tanks may also be sited on earth rings, sand, road base, concrete slab or tank stands.

2. Where possible site your tank on the cooler side of your house or shed.

3. If using sand, soil, earth ring or road base make sure that the material is level, well compacted and contained. Subsidence of the base material may damage your tank.

4. The base for your tank must be bigger than the diameter of the tank and fully support the weight of your tank. Stands must be built to support the weight of your tank when full and any deflection will void the warranty. Concrete slabs must be level and smooth.

5. Always connect your tank with a flexible connection, no less than 1.00 metre in length. Polyethylene tanks are flexible and fittings and pipes must be flexible or damage will be done to the tank.

6. Do not over tighten your fittings this may damage the tank and cause leaks.

7. Pipes and gate valves connected to your tank must be supported independently of the tank. Pipes connected to tanks on stands must be supported by the stand not the tank.

8. Do not allow long lengths of pipe to drag on your tank as this may cause damage. Always support the pipe work independently of the tank.

9. Do not walk or put pressure on the dome of your tank.

10. Over flow water must be directed away from the base of your tank to stop it being undermined.

11. Tank hold down points must be used in cyclone areas.

12. Incorrect installation will void tank warranty.

• Overflow water must be directed away from the base of the tank.• Tank installed on 100 –125mm well compacted sand, soil, road base or level

concrete pad 300mm greater than the diameter of the tank

Always insert a length of flexible hose between fitting and pipe work.

Unsupported pipe work puts excessive strain on fitting and tank wall

Take pipe directly into ground to avoid running over pipe and damaging tank wall.

Flexible connection, no less than 1 metre in length.

What size do I need? The installation of a ‘large as possible’ rainwater tank and harvesting rainwater from your roof minimises the impact of water shortages and lessens your water costs.

Calculate your likely annual usage from the water storage requirement table belowUsing the water catchment table and the average rainfall for your area, calculate the amount of

rainwater captured by your roof. Now you can check your intended usage against the average annual catchment.Identify your proposed tank site and measure the space and height available.

Reasons for choosing Practical Rainwater Tanks...

• Old concrete tanks can get calcium leaching out of the walls, forming white deposits. • Tin and gal iron tanks can react chemically with the water, especially minerals in bore water. • Plastic lined corrogated iron tanks sweat between the liner and the corrogated iron causing rust. The liner will split and is not vermon proof. • Fibreglass tanks break down after a period of time.• Open top tanks or tanks with shadecloth over the top allow dirt, debris and sunlight into them causing algae growth.

All Practical Plastics NT Pty Ltd products are made from tank grade polymer and approved for the storage of food and water with a UV factor of 24. All materials are Australian origin and manufactured. Practical tanks are one piece construction for tough, stress free and overall construction strength, combined with a wide ranges of sizes and shapes for ease of installation.
