Counselling @ Ntec National Institute of Education

At Ntec, my goal is to train 21st century, client-directed, evidence-based Counsellors and family therapists.seventy years of Outcome Research data in the industry has proved the obvious – therapy works, with the average treated person who seeks therapy for presenting issues being better off than 80% of the population who do not seek therapy assistance when they may need to.

A lot of other training organisations in the field seem to have remained “stuck” in an ideological and student delivery time-warp, teaching outdated and often discredited models of Counselling intervention and assistance, whilst placing artificial performance criteria upon students that have absolutely no basis in evidence.

At Ntec, we recognise that we live in an international age of instant communication and feedback, a society of busy and complex lives, and a client population who require a valid “menu of options” as to how they seek therapy assistance.

Our Ntec Diploma in Counselling and Family Therapy focuses on how these diverse client needs can be both met and measured, be that through traditional counselling service provision, right through to app, online, and e-therapy applications.

Critically, we also emphasise the importance of the measurement of results in the work we do with clients, and the Ntec Diploma in Counselling and Family Therapy is the only counselling training programme in New Zealand that delivers an entire module on Routine Client Outcome Measurement.

Students who graduate from our Diploma will be “21st century-ready Counsellors and Family Therapists, able to confidently operate in any manner of counselling environment that may come their way, and they will know “what works” with their clients, because they will be measuring their client outcome results with every client that they work with.

So if you’re interested in learning how to become a 21st century therapist – join us!

Our integrated counselling programme will assist to prepare students towards working in the counselling profession. The programme has a client-directed approach that combines theory and practice as students develop the knowledge and skills of best practice counselling.

Duration2 years full time, or 4 years part-time.

Programme ContentStudents learn how to communicate appropriately and respect client vulnerability through combining natural compassion, empathy and ethical practices. Problem-solving tools are also introduced, and students learn how to record clients’ progress within the context of professional counselling.A solid grounding in current research and co-operation with other health professionals is a core feature of this diploma. The optional oppurtunity for internships are often available with a range of counselling and other social service providers. For a snapshot of some examples of programme content, please go to: www.counsellingnz.net which is the dedicated supplementary learning website for Diploma in Counselling and Family therapy students.

Career OpportunitiesThis Diploma in Counselling will prepare you for career opportunities as a counsellor, community worker or other social service care provider. ‘Chance Favours the Prepared Mind’- Louis Pasteur

The Professional Skills Development (PSD) programme is best summed up by this statement.

Opportunities will come to those whose minds are prepared and ready. Realisation of oneself, therefore, is the key to a successful and fulfilling career and indeed, life.

PSD is designed to be an integral part of all Ntec Diploma courses. The learning outcomes of the programme are to provide students with an understanding of the New Zealand way of life, develop a greater awareness of self and hence gain confidence, job search and employability skills. The programme is designed to engage all learning senses. It is taught using activities like games, role play, as well as using videos. PSD has its own dedicated Facebook page: NTEC Professional Skills

Development Programme.

Following are some comments extracted from student feedback:

“Above excellent (course rating) is the honest feedback, not trying to make anyone happy. It was the best learning experience I ever had. Well done with the design and implementation of this programme.”

“This is a very good (programme) to teach students because in this way we can’t feel homesick and people from different countries can understand by ‘eyes, ears and heart’. I can say that ‘PSD is a great class for international students’.”

“The programme is very good. All the things we learnt in this course are very valuable. It is very helpful to improve our personality and communication skills. The method which they used to teach is excellent. I always recommend to other students to join this course if they want to improve their personality.”

Ntec believes that the education of our students goes beyond the technical knowledge and skills of their Diploma courses. Our students need to be better learners and after graduating, to be work-ready employees. The PSD programme provides for this and it is our way of showing our students that we believe in giving them a holistic learning experience.

We at Ntec believe in being responsible citizens of New Zealand, and it is our commitment to this belief that we also see a need to impart such values to our students. Students are taught the New Zealand way of doing business as well as work culture and ethics.

Environmental InitiativeNtec has undertaken to support initiatives in New Zealand to improve the environment. A team of students has been working for 4 hours each week on a reserve about 20 km from the college. The group has been involved in clearing weed trees from the area of native bush and then preparing the land for planting of native trees. In total during the last year, they worked for more than 400 hours. This commitment from Ntec and the students has been of immense benefit to this project. Students were presented with certificates by Graham Falla, member of the Friends of Mangemangeroa committee at the 2012 March Graduation Ceremony to acknowledge their contribution.

Ntec and the Auckland Chamber of Commerce

have signed an agreement for Ntec graduates

to be part of the New Kiwis, which links New

Zealand employers with skilled migrants eligible

to work and currently living in New Zealand.

Ntec level 6 graduates who have their graduate

job search visas will be able to attend the New

Kiwis Career Success course, which is free to

participants, and provides graduates with job

search skills, and networking opportunities.

Diabetes New ZealandDiabetes New Zealand is a national charity that represents people with diabetes. Ntec students have volunteered at Diabetes NZ Auckland located at Mount Eden, offering their services to help with administrative tasks, such as preparing flyers, letters and mailers. Our students have found the engagements meaningful as they spend time on a worthy cause. Furthermore, through helping out at events, they are able to network and communicate with a wide and diverse range of people.
