Claregalway rower making steady strides to representing Ireland

Sporting excellence and achievement

are rewards from years of hard

work and personal sacrifice, yet the

golden moment of representing your

country on the international stage,

is something only a true sportsman

aspires to.

When their peers are enjoying a

night on the town or indulging in

down time in front of the telly, the

sporting elite is going that extra mile

in the rain or pushing through the

Claregalway felt the effects of Hurrican Tomas last week, as a 100 year old tree was

knocked over in the wind. The tree, located in the Church car park in the village, fell

around lunch time last Thursday (11th November). Local residents were quick to help

and the tree was moved later that day. Fortunately nobody was injured in the fall.

pain barrier with another 100 reps on

the treadmill.

Years of hard work and punishing physical

endurance has led one local girl to dream

of achieving the holy grail of sport.

Siobhan McCrohan from Cloon,

Claregalway is on track to represent her

country at the Olympic Games in London

in 2012.

The 24-year old rower is amassing

impressive times and reaching new

heights for Irish Ladies’ rowing in recent

months with a top four finish at this year’s

European Championships.

She and her rowing partner, UCD

oarswoman Claire Lamb, raised the

bar for Irish rowers in the Lightweight

Women’s Double Scull at the event in

Portugal, giving reasonable hope that the

pair may be on course for Ireland’s first-

ever appearance in Ladies’ rowing at an

Olympic Games.

The event is particularly competitive

as this is the only boat class available to

lightweight women in the Olympics.

The young woman, who has strong Tuam

connections through her grandmother

Rose Corcoran of St. Joseph’s Park, has

her feet firmly planted on the ground and

refuses to let any expectations divert her.

“London is a long, long way off and

a lot will happen between now and

qualifying,” she said.

“For now, I’m concentrating on my

winter schedule of training and

preparation for the next year’s events.”

So while tight rein is being kept on any

expectations, her dedication to her sport

remains unwavering.

Training is year round, with five hours

a day either on the water or in the gym,

with the only barrier so far proving the

weather.

“I’m out on the water every day, bar one

day last year when the river was frozen,”

said Siobhan.

“If I’m not in the water, I’m in the gym

where we do 13 training sessions a

week, from endurance to weights, water

and technique.”

Such single-mindedness is no surprise

to Siobhan’s mother Bridie, who has

witnessed determination from her only

daughter from a very early age.

“This is the way she is, she’s passionate

about rowing and we’ve been supporting

her every way we can,” she said.

“She’s been the very same since she was

a small child. She started ballet classes

when she was five and she only gave

them up the year she sat her Leaving

Cert, so the dedication she’s shown to

rowing has been no surprise to us.”

Her initial exposure to the sport came

through her father Michael, who

represented Ireland as a schoolboy and

won two gold medals at the World Veteran

Rowing Games in Prague in 2002.

“I was down at the water with Dad from a

very early age but I only actually took

up rowing when I started secondary

school,” says Siobhan.

Her alma mater, Taylor’s Hill, has

produced several members of her club

Tribesman, where Siobhan is one of only

two professional rowers.

During her time at University of

Limerick, where she graduated with a

degree in Aeronautical Engineering,

Siobhan maintained her fitness with a

regular training schedule that kept her

in contention for the national titles she

accrued during her student years.

The young woman is modest about her

success to date, which includes several

national senior championship titles as

well as making top six finishes at both

the World and European Championship

events this year.

She maintains hard work has a huge

part to play in her overall abilities on the

water.

“For some sports if you don’t have a

natural talent you won’t succeed,

whereas with rowing a lot of hard work

can get you very far,” she said.

And while the training continues apace,

the focus for the coming months reverts

to maintaining competitive timings and

honing her physical fitness for the next

18 months, that will hopefully culminate

in that illustrious berth at the London

Olympics.

“Like I said, an awful lot can happen

between now and 2012 and it depends

on whether or not Claire and I can build

on the success we’ve had so far,”

said Siobhan.

“The closest Irish oarswomen got to the

Olympics was back in 2004 when

they just missed out, so yes it would be

wonderful to to there as the first Irish

women to do so, but we can’t be

distracted by such talk at this

early stage.”

Whatever happens over the coming 18

months, hopes are high within the rowing

fraternity that Siobhan and Claire have

the potential to represent their country at

the highest level. Watch this space.

Here we

are almost

a year later

and living in fear of repeat

flooding! Last weekend a

severe weather warning was

issued by Met Éireann . We

took measures to protect our

homes and businesses but

thankfully it came to pass

and we all breathed a sigh

of relief. However, the fear

is still lurking that a repeat

of last year will occur as no flood alleviation measures have

taken place since. At this point in time, an archaeological

impact assessment is being conducted at the site, which is

within a zone of archaeological potential. Subject to this

work being carried out, the Council hopes that part of the

works will start in the next couple of weeks. Let’s just pray

that we don’t get a repeat of last year’s weather in the interim.

The pressure is on for a Secondary School in Claregalway. It

is imperative that the momentum is kept up as the steering

committee has done sterling work in bringing this thus far.

Please support their efforts in every way possible. Tribute

has to be given to Paddy Tobin for bringing this about.

People on the ground are very excited about the envisioned

provision of a Secondary School for the area. Facebook fans

can help by supporting the need for a Secondary School in

Claregalway. Check out www.claregalwaynewschoool.com

for up-to-date information on the new school.

I was in the Arches Hotel recently & was fascinated by the

wonderful artwork displayed on the walls. I was informed

that the Artist was a local man called Hugh Murray from

Gortatleva. One has to see his works to know what I’m

saying – they are absolutely brilliant. I have since met Hugh

and he showed me some paintings he did on the Claregalway

Castle. They would make ideal Christmas presents and are

well worth checking out.

It is important in these recessionary times that we support

local businesses. There is a saying that goes “Keep your Town

in Business by Keeping your Business in Town”. By supporting

local, we are protecting businesses to survive in these difficult

times. We have many services in our community deserving

of our support and custom. If we don’t support local, we are

quenching local enterprises.

Until next time, Josette.

Nuacht Chláir will be fundraising at a Church Gate Collection in Claregalwayon the 4th & 5th of December.

We are trying to raise funds to cover printing costs and the development of our website.

A Scale & Polish does exactly what it says on the cover. Arguably

the most important treatment carried out in every dental surgery.

The answer is quite simple ... prevention, prevention, prevention.

Most of us welcome that fresh feeling after a scale & polish.

Teeth feel smoother, breath fresher and the smile is brighter.

Tartar, otherwise know as calculus builds up on our teeth over

time. Once formed this tartar harbours bacteria and is almost

impossible to remove with a toothbrush. It stains your teeth,

causes bad breath, gum diseases and cavities.

Have a look in the mirror and see if your smile could be made

a little brighter and fresher with a simple scale and polish next

time your at the dentist.

Above is one of the most frequently asked questions in the dental

surgery. Whiter teeth. Everybody wants them. And why not?

When it comes to first impressions, your smile says it all.

Can my Teeth be Whitened?2

Birthday Celebrations3

Tooth whitening systems in dentistry are the kindest, simplest

and most affordable way to enhancing and rejuvenating your

smile. Over years, tobacco, food, drinks such as tea and coffee

can seriously darken and age the appearance of your teeth.

Whitening treatments in dentistry are a safe way to remove

staining. Whitening will not affect crowns, veneers or fillings.

Avoiding staining agents means the effect will last longer before

whitening maintenance is needed.

Custom fabricated trays are one of the simplest and most effective

ways to whiten. This process allows excellent control over the

degree of whitening desired. The only long term side effect - a

beautiful smile.

As we are 8 years in business in Claregalway we are offering

10% off all treatments in December call now to avail of this great offer and enter our Christmas Draw and be in with a chance to win a Tooth Whitening kit to the value of €350.

The Old Mower

Once more I’ll whet the Blade

And reset the old Scythetree,

Well my father knew that trade,

And taught his skill to me.

When I mow in Gleann Bhui

I’ll cut a swathe four feet wide,

As if the scythe were part of me,

Swinging from side to side.

Half a step with a curving sweep,

And the falling corn sings,

The stubble behind one inch deep

By measured skilful swings.

I’ll shout to the binding men

If they’ve stopped to smoke,

And in my father’s tongue scold them –

’Twas the Irish then I spoke.

We’ll drink the watered oatmeal

To slake the burning thirst

When that blazing heat we feel,

And the sun can do its worst.

The stooks will be in the old way

Just like soldiers in a row,

As was done in my father’s day,

When they harvested long ago.

Where stands the lonely Fairy tree

I’ll cut carefully by its side

So they don’t come to harm me,

When at night they dance and hide.

From olden days that Hawthorn

Has stood midfield on its own,

Since the time of my grandfather –

And will be there when I’m gone.

Oh the swish of mowing steel

Will be music to my ears,

Young and strong again I’ll feel

As I was in youthful years.

From my half-door now can see,

Gleann Bhui I mowed in yore,

The legs no longer carry me –

I’ll use that Scythe no more.

Edward Coppinger Scythetree; Poetic name for a scythe especially

if the handle was grown to shape in Cregmore

coppice wood, and the like.

Understanding cholesterol and atheroma

(‘furring of the arteries’)

Cholesterol is a lipid (fat chemical) that

is made in the liver from fatty foods that

we eat. A certain amount of cholesterol

is present in the bloodstream. You

need some cholesterol to keep healthy.

Cholesterol is carried in the blood as part

of particles called lipoproteins. There are

different types of lipoproteins, but the

most relevant to cholesterol are:

› Low density lipoproteins carrying

cholesterol - LDL cholesterol.

This is often referred to as ‘bad

cholesterol’ as it is the one mainly

involved in forming atheroma.

› High density lipoproteins carrying

cholesterol - HDL cholesterol. This is

often referred to as ‘good cholesterol’

as it may actually prevent

atheroma formation.

Patches of atheroma are like small fatty

lumps which develop in the inside lining

of arteries (blood vessels). A patch of

atheroma makes an artery narrower,

if you have certain risk factors which

include: smoking, high blood pressure,

high cholesterol level, diabetes, obesity,

lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet, a

strong family history of heart disease or a

stroke, and certain ethnic groups.

You should have a blood test to check your

cholesterol level:

› If you are aged 40 or more.

› If you are an adult at any age and have:

› A strong family history of early

cardiovascular disease. This means

if you have a father or brother who

developed heart disease or a stroke

before they were 55, or in a mother or

sister before they were 65.

› A first degree relative (parent, brother,

sister, child) with a serious hereditary

lipid disorder. For example, familial

hypercholesterolaemia or familial

combined hyperlipidaemia. These

diseases are uncommon.

A cholesterol check should be done as

part of an overall assessment of your risk

of developing heart disease or stroke. A

‘risk factor calculator’ is commonly used

by doctors and nurses. This calculates

your risk of developing heart disease or

stroke within the next 10 years. A score

is calculated which takes into account all

your risk factors such as age, sex, if you

smoke, blood pressure, cholesterol level,

family history, etc.

Do I need to lower my cholesterol level?

Treatment to reduce your cholesterol

level will usually be advised if your ‘risk

factor’ score is high. No matter what your

current cholesterol level, if your overall

risk is high then treatment to lower your

cholesterol is usually advised.

Also, the following people should have

treatment to lower their cholesterol

level, regardless of the risk factor score.

Cholesterol: A Summary

This is because the risk calculator may

not necessarily take into account these

people who have a high risk of developing

atheroma.

› People with a very high cholesterol

level (a total cholesterol to high density

lipoprotein ratio of 6 or more).

› People with familial (hereditary)

lipid disorders.

What treatments can lower a

cholesterol level?

Drugs called ‘statins’ are the usual

treatment to lower a cholesterol level.

There are several brands of statin drug.

They work by blocking an enzyme

(chemical) which is needed to make

cholesterol in the liver. See leaflet called

‘Statins’ for details. Other types of drugs

are sometimes used.

A healthy diet, and foods that contain

plant sterols or stanols can reduce the

cholesterol level. For example, certain

yoghurts, margerines, etc. However,

these do not usually reduce the cholesterol

level very much and a statin drug is usualy

recommended.

Note:

Cholesterol is only one ‘risk factor’

for developing heart disease or stroke.

You should also do as much as you can

to reduce any other risk factors. For

example, don’t smoke, aim to lose weight

if you are overweight, eat a healthy diet,

aim to exercise regularly, keep your

salt intake down, and have your blood

pressure checked at least every 3-5 years.

Plaque

which may reduce the blood flow. Also,

sometimes a blood clot (thrombosis)

forms over a patch of atheroma.

Depending on the arteries affected, a

build up of atheroma can cause: angina,

heart attack, stroke, transient ischaemic

attack (TIA or ‘mini-stroke’), and other

artery related problems.

You are more likely to develop atheroma

Cut section of artery

November update from your local Councillor, Jim CuddyCregboy N17 road works

I am glad to be able to say that after over a

year and a half campaigning for road works

to be carried out on the N 17 at Cregboy

the work has been done and from the

feed back I have been getting motorists

seem to be happy with the outcome You

will recall that these road works had to

be done as a result of subsidence of the

hard shoulder on the Galway side of the

Cregboy Rd. junction.

Proposed flood relief works

A large number of concerned residents

attended a meeting in the Claregalway

Hotel on the night of the 23rd.

September. The meeting was addressed

by representatives of the County Council,

Office of Public Works, Ryan Hanley

Consultants and some local Oireachtas

and council members. While there was

welcome for the works that are proposed

to be carried out upstream from the

Claregalway bridge there was however

extreme annoyance that nothing was

proposed to be done at this time in

relation to places like Cloonbiggeen and

Montiagh. The consultants Ryan Hanley

had a brief to deal only with the flooding

issues upstream from the Claregalway

Bridge. I understand that the consultants

report alone cost in the region of 80,000

euro. The OPW officials at the meeting

said that they intend to carry out a

survey next year covering the area of the

Corrib itself. As outlined at the meeting

an archeological dig has to be carried

out near the Claregalway Bridge before

works can start because of its proximity

to the Claregalway Castle and the Old

Abbey. This study is not expected to take

long. When works have been done on the

Claregalway Bridge the OPW will then

move upstream to Crusheen Bridge.

Flood relief works on the N 18 at Lydican

I am glad to be able to say that following

securing funding secured from the OPW

and the Minister responsible that flood

relief works have started. The money for

this work was made possible following

a very comprehensive report which was

submitted by Deputy Noel Grealish.

There will be a traffic management plan

in place near Horkans garden centre for

the duration of these works so I would

advise motorists to be extra careful when

going through this area. When that work

is finished I will be asking the council to

deal with the flooding problems in the

Cloonacauneen area for which money is

allocated.

Hedge Trimming

I have been informed by the council that

it is hoped to do the hedge trimming

works which I have requested starting

next Wednesday October 6th.

Flooding at Church Car Park

Following on from representations made

by Deputy Noel Grealish and myself to

Galway Co. Co. the council have agreed

to carry out works to provide additional

water pipes to take the water from the

car park. Some week ago the church

was nearly flooded after a heavy rain

downpour when the existing drainage

system was not able to cope on that

occasion. Towards that end I will be

committing some of my discretionary

funding towards this work.

Club News:

The Fashion Show in aid of Claregalway

GAA took place on Thursday 21st

October and was an outstanding

success. Congratulations to an excellent

organising committee and Mandy Maher

Modelling Agency for putting the event

together and to all the Sponsors. All

proceeds from the event go towards the

ongoing development of the new Club

training grounds in Knockdoemore.

The Claregalway Ladies finished an

amazing Championship season on Bank

Holiday Monday in their replay against

Salthill. Their win followed on in the

success of the Junior Ladies who won

the Division 3 League Title recently .

This was the second title for the Junior

Team this season as they won the Junior B

Championship Final a few weeks previous

to this. U14 Ladies won both the A and D

Championships, U12 A Championships

and the U10’s winning their League

earlier in the year. These wins have come

about as a result of brilliant commitment

from both players and mentors. The

Ladies Club have also won the Connacht

Achievement Award in recognition of

how well the Ladies Club is run on many

different levels. Congratulations to all

involved.

Club Gear is available from Hughes

the u16 Ted Webb Cup in August.

Ladies:

Claregalway U16 ladies took on Salthill

in the Co Championship Final replay on

Monday 25th Oct @ 2 pm in Moycullen

pitch. Both teams were eager to take this

title having drawn two weeks earlier.

That game finished level at 2-12 each. It

was an enthralling match with the lead

swinging each way several times during

the game. It would be hard to reproduce

such a high quality match but the large

crowd were served to an even better game

on this occasion.

Even though Claregalway played with a

strong wind in the first half, Salthill got

off to a superb start getting 2 goals in

the first few minutes, Claregalway backs

and midfielders settled admirably after

this and increased pressure by everyone

throughout the field stopped Salthill’s run

of scores. Claregalway began to pick off

points after this and scored a superb goal

just before the break, leaving the scoreline

1-09 to 3-01 at half time.

Salthill opened the second half with

2 points in quick succession to level

the score, When Salthill got a their

4th goal midway through the 2nd half

things looked bleak but to their credit

Claregalway responded immediately with

a superbly worked goal of their own.

With 10 mins remaining and 3 points in

arrears Salthill started to go for goals but

the Claregalway backs and goalkeeper

were outstanding and withstood the

pressure. Claregalway were not going to

let this title go and were delighted to hear

the final whistle on the score line of 4-11

to 4-08.

Ever feel like you’re stuck in a rut?

Ever feel like you’re stuck or in a rut?

‘Coaching’ or ‘life coaching’ as it can also

be called may be worth considering. While

the term ‘coaching’ has connotations with

sports activities, the word ‘coaching’ is

actually derived from ‘stage coach’: to

literally transport a person from one place

to another.

Great but what exactly is it?

Coaching is received by people who are

looking for a positive change in their

lives. Some people receive counselling

and other forms of therapy to get support

and make changes in their lives. Coaching

is primarily future-focused on positive

outcomes, and this is the main difference

between it and other forms of therapy and

counselling. Coaching only briefly refers

to the past for awareness of the challenges

faced.

What can coaching do for me?

People go to coaching for many reasons

usually people are looking for change in

their lives. You may want to change job

or career, college course, change your

lifestyle or deal better with relationships.

Together with your coach, options can

be explored, and possibilities created. At

the end of the day, you are the expert on

you and you decide what direction each

conversation takes. By the end of each

session you can decide what outcomes

and actions you want to take in your life,

and make the changes you want to make

in your life.

How many sessions will I need?

This is the same as asking “How long is

a piece of string?” Some people come to

coaching with a challenge that can be

addressed in one session, for others the

challenge may be greater and take several

sessions.

How long do the sessions last?

Sessions are usually 1 hour in duration,

and can be done face to face, by telephone

or by skype. Much progress can be made

in one hour, and several different topics

can be discussed in a session. The sessions

are flexible and are directed by you, you

are in charge.

Please Note:

It must be noted that coaching has its

place, as does counselling and other forms

of therapy. Some issues cannot be dealt

with in coaching and in such cases people

will be encouraged to seek counselling.

Just like all support services provided, it

is important that when selecting a coach

that you ensure that your coach is properly

accredited and has gained the necessary

qualification.
