QualityFor over 30 years, OERLIKON has offered the highest qualitysolutions using the widest range of technical expertise combinedwith relevant and consistent Quality Assurance and Quality Controlmanagement. In the nuclear field, where safety, reliability and long term operatinglife are mandatory, the Air Liquide Welding factories have been keypartners to all the manufacturers involved in the most criticalsystems.A special manufacturing programme dedicated to nuclearcomponents regarding the formulation and design of OERLIKON’snuclear welding consumables range has been implemented. Thus assuring consistently low levels of cobalt as well as a veryhigh level of weld metal purity Air Liquide Welding. The Air Liquide Welding production units for welding consumablesfor nuclear applications have attained the special QSC certificationfor nuclear Material Organization. This Quality System Certificatefrom the ASME society enables Air Liquide Welding to manufactureand supply welding products for use in the nuclear sector. With thecombination of the Quality System Certificate from ASME, as wellas the regular qualification audits performed by our clients underthe RCC-M code, OERLIKON is a key international primary sourcefor welding consumables which conform to nuclear power industryspecifications.

Quality managementOERLIKON has a total commitment to quality. The productranges are manufactured in group production facilities, all ofwhich are ISO certified. Detailed certification or approval forwelding consumables is supplied as a matter of routine andcustomer’s special quality requirements for increasing frequencyof batch testing or specialised certification can be readilyaccommodated. This ensures the reliability and reproducibilityfabricators and owners need in the nuclear industry.

OERLIKON and the Nuclear PowerIndustryOERLIKON is an important supplier of welding products fornuclear fabrication and experience in this field dates back somedecades to the beginning of the French nuclear powerprogramme. A close and reliable collaboration resulted in thesuccessful development of welding consumables for critical areasof fabrication such as the primary circuit. OERLIKON’sinvolvement with its products doesn’t stop at manufacture.Indeed, OERLIKON provides a close and detailed participationwith nuclear product applications, from the initial productselection to welding properties on site. A team of highly qualifiedengineers is ready to respond, with the objective of providingtechnologically relevant and practical solutions. This is ofparticular relevance for activities such as welding consumablescertification or qualification by the owner or the manufacturer.A large and dedicated information base is at the serviceof each customer to ensure the relevant selection of weldingconsumables to meet the demanding and changing technicalspecifications of the nuclear industry.

FlexibilityThe OERLIKON nuclear product range is well defined inaccordance with the RCCM code, ASME III 3800 or KTA 1408.As new requirements are implemented, such as very low levelof impurity elements, so new and specialised weldingconsumables are required. Regular meetings with engineeringdepartments and major fabricators ensures a dedicated rangeof OERLIKON welding consumables which is constantly evolvingto meet the changing design requirements.

Absolute watertight control for submerged arc fluxes.DRYBAG an innovative packaging system fromOERLIKON reduces costs, time and energy.

DRYBAG for SAW fluxes

Advantagesn No risk of moisture ingress, even during transcontinental

or maritime transport and following long-term storagein adverse conditions

n No risk from ambient humidity, even in extreme climaticconditions

n No need to re-condition the flux before use

n This new packaging solution enables fabricators to reducethe risk of hydrogen induced cracking

n No requirement for detailed control of temperature or humidityduring storage, thereby saving time and energy costs

n Improved, simplified handling and storage compared to existingsolutions using metal drums, again reducing costs

DRYBAG:a packaging solution from our R&D teamsThe research and development and the production departmentsof the Air Liquide Welding group, have developed an innovativenew packaging system for OERLIKON submerged arc weldingfluxes: DRYBAG a fully moisture proof packaging system makingany requirement for flux conditioning unecessary, resulting inhigh-quality welds even in the most hostile ambient conditions.

DRYBAG is made of an advanced composite foil, speciallydeveloped for vacuum packaging applications. For enhancedsecurity, a partial vacuum is produced in the DRYBAG during thepackaging of the welding flux. The low-pressure serves as anindicator for the security of the packaging. OERLIKON DRYBAGoffers similar levels of security as packaging in metal drums, butis more cost effective. DRYBAG is available in 25 kg or larger, 500or 800 kg formats. The 25 kg-DRYBAG can be stored, transportedand palletised in the same way as regular 25 kg bags and thelarger formats have an integral pallet.

METAL DRUMS:METAL DRUMS packaging arecompletely moisture proof requiringno controlled climatic conditionsand as such can be used for weldingwithout any reconditioning or re-baking. Before use, the packagingintegrity should be checked. If thedrums show signs of puncture thenthe contents must be re-dried ordiscarded.

DRYBAG delivers SAW flux to the fabrication site with the same low moisture level as during packingin the production plant. The SAW flux is ready for use on site in the low hydrogen condition, straight from the DRYBAG with no re-conditioning.

Dedicated Overseas Packagingcan be supplied, containing VCI protection

plastic films

SAW flux in DRYBAG and SAWwire in foil, supplied in polymerlined wooden crates containingcorrosion inhibitors.

Strip weld overlay for nuclear engineering

Similar to other welding processes, the most sophisticated components are the coating of anMMA electrode and the flux for the submerged arc process, which determine the quality of theweld deposit. Welding fluxes are characterised by their basicity, granulometry and composition. The most important characteristics of the liquid slag which is formed during the process are:viscosity, solidification temperature range, surface tension and interaction with the chemistryof the deposit.

Fluxes for the Submerged Arc ProcessNom Classification

AST 300 NUCISO 14174 -S A CS 2B

Agglomerated and chromium compensated flux for strip weld overlay applications using the submerged arc process.Highly basic agglomerated flux specially designed for use with stainless steel welding strips.Excellent slag removal and good wettability producing a smooth weld surface.

AST 600 NUCISO 14174 -S A AB 2B

Neutral agglomerated flux for strip weld overlay applications using the submerged arc process.Highly basic agglomerated flux specially designed for use with nickel base welding strips.Excellent slag removal and good wettability producing a smooth weld surface.

OERLIKON SUPRASTRIP are solid strips used for weld overlay. The most common thicknessfor welding strip is 0.5 mm, except in some asian countries where the thickness is 0.4 mm.The standard widths are 30, 60, 90 and 120 mm.

On request, OERLIKON can provide SUPRASTRIP from <10 mm up to <180 mm width, with upto 450 kg coil depending on the width of the strip. SUPRASTRIP are delivered in the cold rolledcondition, with a cleanliness of ~28 mN/m. OERLIKON supply SUPRASTRIP within a very narrowrange of chemical composition and very low level of impurities in order to guarantee fully consistentdeposit analyses from batch to batch with the same welding parameters.
