Proceedingcounter-clockwise, The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS) built TheAuditorium on the South West comer of River and Walnut in 1929. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daySaints built their Mormon Visitors' Center on the South East comer of River and Walnut in 1971. In 1994the RLDS Church (now called the Community of christ) built their Temple dedicated to Peace on the NorthEast comer of River and Walnut. It is the most recent property to go out of private hands.

Since 1831, when Joseph Smith, Jr. dedicated land for the construction of Temples in Independence, theplot of ground known as the Temple Lot has been sacred to members of the movement. Mormons lost controlof this site when they were forced to flee Jackson County in 1833. Fragmentation of the early church afterJoseph Smith's 1844 death also complicated matters. Development in the Temple Lot area in 1886 is shown here. The wide line indicates the western citylimits of Independence in 1886. The Church of Christ (Temple Lot) had not yet built their first churchbuilding. Grove St. is now named Short St., Temple is River Blvd., Christian is Fuller and Wilson isCrysler.

Restoration Movement have at times competed for control of the Temple Lot. Today, portions of the 63+acres of the original purchase are owned by the LDS Church, Community of Christ, and Church of Christ(Temple Lot).

John Hedrick purchased the first of the Woodson & Maxwell's Addition lots for The Church of Christ(Temple Lot) in 1867. By 1873 they had acquired lots 15 through 22 and in 1906 obtained the triangularComeratRiverandLexington(nolotnumber).["ReclaimingtheTempleLotinthecenterplaceofzion"byR.JeanAddamsin Mor"07! f7js'Jor!.ca/ Sffidi.es, Vol. 7, No 1 &2 (Spring/Fall) 2006, pagel 3-15]

The large piece of land (40 acres) between Walnut and Pacific, East of River Boulevard was at one timeowned by William Chrisman as shown on the 1877 & 1886 Atlas plats. Samuel 0. Bennion, as Central StatesMission president for the LDS Church purchased the largest part of that quarter of a quarter. [7l¢e Adz.ssowrz.Independence Mission, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,1883-2000: The Return to Zion by Douglas LeMon et at.I The

piece on the southeast plus a some in section two was purchased later by the RLDS Church under theleadership of Frederick Madison Smith. The grand old Swope mansion was on that property.

The RLDS Church (now Community of Christ) built the "Stone Church" on land just outside the 63+acres, across Lexington Street from the Temple Lot site.

The sketch of Sections2 and 3 in Township 49NRange 32W shows the firstownership of the land. The South West quarter ofSection 2 was set aside forthe town of Independencebut the town soon outgrewits boundaries andexpanded northward. These two sections were asmall part of the Seminarylands given to the State bythe Federal goverrment forthe support of highereducation and chosen bythe state. The 63+ acresbordered on the road fromIndependence to Kawtownship and thence to

Indian Territory (later the state of Kansas), also called the Westport Road.. Jones Hoy Floumoy purchasedthe entire South East quarter and the East half of the South West Quarter as well as the South East quarterof the North West quarter, all in Section three in 1831. Both the 1831 and the 1833 purchases from the Statewere issued patent certificates in 1833.

"An act of congress, on January 27,1827, authorized selection from any of the public lands in Missouri

of tracts equal to two congressional townships. Another act, on March 3,1831, authorized the legislatureto sell these lands and to invest the money in a productive way. The proceeds were to be applied solely tothe support of a seminary. [Lr.S. S/cz/w/es czf fcz7.ge, 4 (January 24,1827), Ch. 5; (March 3,1831), Ch.116,sec. 8.] The state legislature's act of 1829 had applied to the seminary lands the same protection given to thecommon school lands by the legislature in 1825. To convert this gift from the federal government intomoney, the Sixth General Assembly set up the machinery for the sale of the land, with the provision that noneWas to be Sold for less than two dollars Per acre." L4 fJi.sfory a/ffee I/H;.vcrs!.ty o/Mj.ssowrj. by Frank F. Stephens, University

of Missouri Press, Columbia,1962, page 5-6. Emphasis mine.]

Notice that Jones H. Floumoy could not urchase this land before the legislature authorized the land salesin ±£!| He could stake a claim before then but would not be able to actually purchase and pay for the landuntil it was offered for sale. Floumoy's purchase date was December 12,1831 and the date on his deed toEdward Partridge was December 19, 1831. Many times in early days a piece of property was sold before theoriginal land purchaser had a patent (deed) himself or when he was even able to enter it himself. A man couldeffectively have a pre-emption on the land, whether written or not. December 1831 was when he had a

lt is obvious that this small, odd shaped piece of land had some special interest. See the sketchof sections 2 and 3 and the plats on page 1 and 2. What made it desirable? Flournoy to Holcombto MCLellin to Newbeny -three transactions all in 1833. Why was the tract cut off in such an oddmanner? The biggest part of this tract has been drastically changed by the railroad cut andWinner's rail line and road. It was along the road which many of the early traders used to go west.It may have had eariy buildings on it. It connected the 55 acres to the 63+ acres making the landholdings contiguous.

AKEMAN / AIKMAN FAMILYJACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI CONVERTS

by Amette W. Curtis

Akeman and Aikman are the most common spellings of this surname. There are more. I will use thespelling used in the various documents. Aikman is used by an allied line still in Yell County, Arkansas. Bothspellings are used in the censuses. Wilford Woodruff used Akeman.

Most of what is known about this family and the early Mormon church comes from Wilford Woodruff. So let us begin with his story. Please do not expect this article to read from front to end and make the bestsense possible. There are too many unanswered questions. Refer from source to source to analyze it yourself.

MORMON MISSIONARIES IN MISSOURI & ARKANSAS IN 1835

Wilford Woodruff in his "History" [MS 27 ( 1865), page 216] says that he went from Kirland, Ohio to ClayCounty, Missouri with Zion's Camp. The Prophet advised young men without families to stay in ClayCounty which he did. He was ordained a Priest on November 5th 1834. Bishop Partridge asked him to goon a mission into the Southern States through Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky. Elder Harry Brown agreedto accompany him. On January 13,1835 Wilford Woodruff received an "honorable discharge" from LymanWight. Zion's Camp had disbanded the previous July. They left on the January 13th 1835 to go throughJackson County from Clay and did so without molestation. On January 18,1835 they arrived at HarmonyMission (on the Marais Des Cygnes River, now near Rich Hill, just north of the Bates / Vemon County line)where they were offered neither food nor lodging. They went on 15 miles more to an Indian trading house, having been directed through a swamp, they arrived muddy about midnight but received a kind reception. On the 19th they began early, it being 60 miles to the next house. They encountered bears and wolves on theway. As they traveled on further they preached along the way as they could. On January 24,1835 theypreached at Mr. Nathan Tanner's in Green [sic, Greene] County, Missouri. John Joshua Tanner, NathanTanner and Amasa Lyman followed the advice of the Prophet and remained in Missouri a year to assist theSaints, returning to Kirtland in 1835. [Tumer's in thejoumal. The Tanner's are thought to have been in VanBuren, County. In the 5 or 6 days between the 19th when they left the area of Harmony Mission in Van Buren,County and the 24th when they were at Turners or Tanners, Woodruff should have nearly arrived at theArkansas border so Greene County is reasonable. Tumer's in Greene Co. is at least as likely as Tanner'swherever.]

The state of Missouri sits above Arkansas. Clay County sits directlyabove and across the Missouri River from Jackson County which ishighlighted on the map. Wilford Woodruff set out from Clay County, crossedJacksoncountyintovanBurencountywhichthenincludedcass,Bates and Vemon counties and continued south to Arkansas then wentfarther into Arkansas to find the Akeman family in Pope County. Later inDecember 1840 Yell county, where they lived, was formed from a part ofPope County. Yell County is highlighted on the map.

After many trials, he and his companion reached Arkansas where theywent in search of the Akeman family. According to his journal, Wilford

Woodruff arrived at Willis Akeman's on "February 8,1835 and departed February 11, where we stayed withJohnathan Hubbel, 2 miles distant." [Woodruffjoumal 1 :2o-21].

Wilford Woodruff wrote: "We arrived at Petty John Creek [sic, Petit Jean Creek or River], inArkansas, where Mr. Alexander Akeman resided, with a large family of sons and one daughter, settled aroundhim. Mr. Akeman, and a part of the family, were members of the Church in Jackson County; his wife diedstrong in the faith in Missouri. His whole family were mobbed, and some of his sons were whippedseverely; but he could not stand the persecution and the loss of property. He moved to Arkansas, to get ridof "Mormonism," and apostatized, and was bitter against the work. When we called upon him, he opposedus strongly - spoke against the leaders of the Church and the Book of Mormon. He had one son whoreceived us, and had a little faith." From Woodruff's joumal we leam that they stopped there three weeks, and cleared land for father Hubbard [sic, Hubble, Hubbel?] while he fed and housed them. "I was warnedthree times by the Lord, to go to Mr. Akeman, and bear testimony unto him of the truth of "Mormonism,"and the wickedness of his course in opposing it; and the last time I called upon him, he was filled withwrath against me, and when I left his house, he followed me in a rage, apparently with some evil intent. When I had got a few rods from his door, he was nearly treading on my heels, and fell dead at my feet" ..."Brother Brown and myself assisted in laying him out and burying him. He died February 14,1835." In

his journal Woodruff says that when Akeman fell he continued on to Mr. Hubbels and there was told thatAkeman was dead. He went to the house as requested and found all of the sons already there.

Henry Hubble spoke in tongues and interpreted the same on February 20. He and his wife werebaptized February 22. [Woodruffjoumal 1 :22]

After they left the Akeman settlement, the two missionaries cut down a large cotton-wood tree and dugout a canoe four feet wide and twelve long and rowed down the Arkansas River, 125 miles to Little Rock.Elder Brown left Woodruff in the swamp on March 24th 1835 when he couldn't travel fast enough. ThenWilford Woodruff went alone to Memphis, Tennessee and met with Brothers Patten and Parrish, havingwaded the "Mississippi swamp" for many miles.

If the reader would like to read more about this story, look for the narratives and the journal of wilfordWoodruff. This story varies somewhat in the several Wilford Woodruff accounts and his journal. He alsospells the names differently in the different versions and he is not above contradicting himself, so read themall. In an internet search for this Akeman family, Wilford Woodruff is nearly all you will find.

TheAikmanfamilycametotheNewJerseyfromscotlandaboutl730.WilliamAikman(1738-1805)had nine children, two of whom were Alexander (about 1770-1835) and William E. (about 1780-1824).Alexander was born in Virginia and died in what was then Pope County in 1835. His sons, William, Willis,Alexander, and Wright, all raised families in the county. Other children of Alexander Aikman were Denicy,Mariah, and Pleasant.

It is from William E. (about 1780-1824) that the Aikman line continues in Yell County to this day.Born in Virginia he married Jane (Jenny Montgomery at Knox County, Tennessee, in 1807. Their childrenwere: Lucinda, Maria, Emily, Sarah, and Dubois Gilbert. He moved to Howard County, Missouri, prior to1820 and then to Lillard County [1ater called Lafayette County].

One of the sons of william E., Michael Edward "Ned" Aikman ( 1848-1864) died while serving in theCivil War in the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry (Union). Some of Alexander Aikman's Yell County sons fought forthe Confederacy. [Comment: I was not able to verify this as none was identifiable in the Confederate index. However, the Federal government did not obtain the names of all Confederate soldiers, so not being in thelist does not prove anything. - awc]

Aikman Landin Missouri and Arkansas

Next let us look at Alexander Aikman family land transactions in both Jackson County, Missouri andin Arkansas. The land Alexander Aikman purchased in Jackson County, Missouri in 1831 and 1833 was notsold until 1837, after his 1835 death. His land was sold to Thomas Pitcher. The "Pitcher Cemetery" is onthat land and was probably not begun as a grave yard by Pitcher but by the Aikman family. It is likely thatAlexander Aikman's wife was buried in the grave yard now known as Pitcher Cemetery.

The 1877 Atlas plats above (parts of two merged) show how the old road west from Independence curvesaround the "Temple Lot" (63+ acres), and meanders through sections 10, 9, 8, down through Aikman'sproperty (shaded area) in section 17 and then west through section 18 in T49 R32, finally crossing the BigBlue River in section 13 T49 R33. By 1877 a bridge was over the Big Blue but the route of the road variedvery little. This route was called the Independence-Westport Road. However, in 1827 it generally followed"the old road with little variation by Alexander Aikman' s to the lower ford on Big Blue." [Jackson co., Mo. court

records, Sept.1827.] Compare this with the original ownership map below.

The original land patents for Aikman's Jackson County, Missouri land do not appear to be recordedin the Jackson County deed records. However, about two years after Alexander Aikman died, his childrensold the property in Jackson County. The deed and a power of attorney not only identify the land but tell usmore about the family members.

The Gibbs were not living near the rest of the siblings and were apparently moving in 1837. Tofacilitate the sale of the Jackson County land, they gave power of attorney to her brother, Willis Aikman, tosign for them in this specific land sale.

/r}dex ... compiled by Joanne C. & 0.8. Eakin, and published by the author in 1988. The followingexcerpts give some valuable insights. The court records tell us that Alexander Aikman was inJackson County at the time the county was set up and had already claimed land. He was the firstoverseer of the road from the ford on Rock Creek to the lower ford on the Big BIue, which wentthrough his land. The job of road overseer was rotated among residents living near the road byorder of the County Court. It was the job of the road overseers to open and see to the maintenanceof the roads. Aikman had a fishtrap on the Big Blue. In 1827 a mill already existed west of the BigBlue in Kaw Township. These selected references are copied here because they give someinsights into early Jackson County. Do not take someone else's interpretation alone, read themyourself.

[September 1827]To the Honorable the County Court. -Pursuant to an order of the County Court for the County of Jackson attheir August term 1827, appointing Richard P. ARKANSAS LAND

Now to more evidence of Alexander Aikman's presence in Pope, later Yell, County, Arkansas.

Some of the persons mentioned in the 1830 and 1840 census records of Yell County, Arkansasfailed to file claim for their lands until later dates or did not bother to file. When Clarksville receiveda land offlce only then did many Settlers file legal Claim. THE AKEMAN FAMILY - A SUMMARY FOR ANALYSIS

Alexander Aikman was born about 1776 in Rockingham County, Virginia, a son of William & Mary (Dunbar)Aikman. According to Andrew Jensen he belonged to the Blue River Branch in Jackson County, Missouri. He diedon 14 Feb 1835 at his home in Pope County, Arkansas. Confusion comes in that Alexander had a brother William E.

(cl 780-1824) whose descendants also lived in Pope County, Arkansas.Alexander was married on 18 Dec 1797 in Knox County, Tennessee toPrudence Stockton, born about 1776. She died after 1820 [family genealogy].Alexander Aikeman's wife died about November 1833 in Jackson County, MO during the Mormon expulsion. It islikely that she was buried in the "Pitcher Cemetery" on the farm. This family had arrived in Jackson County, Missouri by 1827 at the latest.9 CHILDREN (dates are uncertain) (5 sons & 2 daughters)1 Wright (Wight) Aikman born about l815? / born about 1798

No wife stated in 1837 deed naming heirs.

2 William Aikman born about 1800wife Ann [names appear on 1837 deed naming heirs]

3 Denecia / Deresee / Denicy Aikman born about 1801married: 1834 Mar 18 in Jackson Count

[Think Denise]Missouri [Bk.1, pg. 65]

[Note that this marriage date is in the spring after the expulsion. Does this mean that she stayed in JacksonCounty after her father & brothers left or does it mean that the family did not leave immediately but perhapswaited until March? It probably is the former as she did not live near the family in Arkansas in February 1835 .]Jones G. Gibbs born?

According to Verne Jackson's index of Arkansas tax lists, a Jonas G. Gibbs was taxed in 1835 in both Pope Countyand Johnson County, Arkansas. This may be two people with same name.

Ancestry indexes a marriage for a Jonas G. Gibbs to Mrs. M.A. Girdley in Lawrence County, Arkansas on 4 April1849. This is probably a different Jonas G. Gibbs.

[Yell County marriages: 15 March 1835 -Mathew Morse to Mary Aikman by Henry Stinnett, J.P.][Note: Both of these couples appear to have signed as heirs on the 1837 deed. Who is Mary?]

Pleasant was a daughteraccording to one secondary source I found. Pleasant is not designated as a single female in deeds. SUPPORTING SOURcns & Facts to Sort Out

Arkansas Marriages to 1850 -Willis Ackeman marriage to Emly Morse on 9 0ct 1840 in Pope Co., Ark. [could be Eady misread]Mathew Morse marriage to Mary Aikman by Henry Stinnett, J.P. on 15 Mar 1835 in Yell Co., Ark.

These marriages present a puzzle, yet to be unraveled -may belong to Alexander's brother William's descendants.

Wright Akeman is listed among the voters in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri in the August 1828election. [1883 f7i.s/or}; o//ac.k5o# Cow#ty, A4f.ssowrz., page 1o6.] If Wright is the correct name for the voter, then Wright should

be the older one. It was from a written record, not a remembrance.

CENSUS RECORDSThe J830 Ce#sws/or J&ckso" Cow#ty, A4;.ssowri. lists Alexander Aikman on line 1 of page 302. (Samuel C.

Owens in on the last line of the same page.) Attributed to Alexander's household are: males aged 10-15,15-20, 20-30,30-40 and 50-60 and females: 3 aged 20-30 and 1 aged 50-60. Even though no other household had the same surnamethat does not mean there were no other Aikman/Akeman boys or girls elsewhere. They may have been working andliving in a household with a different surname. This does tell us that Alexander and his wife were probably bornbetween 1770 and 1780. In 1830 they probably had 4 sons living at home and three daughters (or two daughters andmaybe a daughter-in-law. All of his daughters did not live in Arkansas near him. It appears Mrs. Gibbs was inMissouri after the expulsion. Alexander Akeman lived in Jackson County, Missouri before the Mormons arrived andtherefore was a Missouri convert.

Did they go to Nauvoo and then remain in Iowa? From the A4ormo# Jzec7ress Pe/z.fz.o#s, page 209, David Frampton [Blue River Branch] says that at the time the Mormonswere driven from Jackson County he went to Col. Thomas Pitches to see if he and others could have protection 2 weeks. He was told all should go except two families that had denied the faith. He saw a horse taken by some of Bogards men.The owner was Jonathan Hubble. That would put a Hubble family in Caldwell County in 1838. Is this the Hubble family that was in Arkansaswith the Aikman family? Did Woodruff's conversion of some of the Hubble family in Arkansas last? Wasthe Hubble family in Jackson County near the Aikmans?

NHWSFUTURE MARKER PROJECTS

Whitmer Livery

The location of the later David Whitmer liverystable in Richmond, Missouri is now known. Apicture taken in the 1950s by Pearl Wilcoxprovides an architectural framework of whitmer' s1870s livery building. It continued to be used forthe same purpose after horse and buggy days, becoming a garage. The large arch was open andallowed horses and conveyances to be driveninside. The building was razed and the site todayis occupied by a nursery greenhouse.

The first draft of the marker text proposed byRon Romig reads: "David Whitmer came toRichmond in 1838, from Far West, CaldwellCounty, Missouri, having separated from theMormon Church. Upon his arrival, he possessedbut a single horse and wagon. To support hisfamily, he began to hire out his wagon, haulinggoods to and from the Missouri River. His successamong the citizens of Richmond enabled him toopen a livery stable. Alonzo Wincheser was hisfirst business partner. In 1841 David was fined$5.00 for hauling freight on Sunday. Free Jim, afree African American, was another early businesspartner. In 1861, his livery was located on MainStreet. This was a convenient location fortransporting customers between the court house, area hotels and the River. In the 1870s he movedhis business to the comer of Franklin andThomton. Here he operated his business with hisson David J. and grandson George W. Schweich.

Whitmer provided livery services to the citizens ofRichmond for nearly half a century. GeorgeSchweich continued the business for a time afterDavid Whitmer's death in 1888."

New information about David Whitmer'sbusiness and life would be welcomed by MMFF byletter, phone or email.

In Clay County

Only two Book of Mormon Witnesses' gravesremain unmarked. They are Peter and ChristianWhitmer who died and were buried in Clay County,Missouri, before the move to Caldwell County.Research has determined that they were buried nextto each other on the Michael Arthur farm.

Some, but not all, of the by Ron Romig.Arthur cemetery graves were moved to a cemeteryin Liberty which is now located on the WilliamJewell College campus. The Sadler familypreserved some of the tombstones. A slavecemetery was also on the Arthur farm.

Other marker suggestions include:Whitmer family cemetery, south of Richmond;Prairie Branch, Kaw township;Paseo at Brush Creek;Newell Knight location in Kaw township.

What would you like to see located and marked?

MORMONS IN CLAY COUNTY

Annette Curtis and Ron Romig have beencontacted by volunteers from the Clay CountyArchives & Historical Library. Their organizationis presently working with the court records of clayCounty to prepare them for scanning. They arehoping to create a (fairly) complete list of the earlyMormon settlers in their area to check against theindex they are preparing for these records.

The Secretary of State's office wants them toextract all the Mormon information from the courtrecords.

They have already used our /836 C/cz}; Co"#fyron I I.sf, the church minutes on the websitesaintswithouthalos.com, the 1885 History of Clayand Platte Counties, and the list of Zion's Campcholera victims.

Another question: Where were people buriedwho, it was said, were buried on the Temple Lot inthe early 1830s? Brigham Young's married sisterwas one of those. It was probably on a high placenot too near the center of their interest.
