Number Buddies
written and illustratedby Sarah Adam
Here is One, alone in the sunBut far from lonely is he
Quiet and shy, contemplative and wry
He’s calm and content as can be.
Two is running late! She’s always in a state
When there’s work to doShe’s on the move
But always makes her date.
Three is the life of the partyBouncing and giggling around
Full of jokes and ticklish pokes He’s always the toast of the town!
Here is little miss FourOut in a downpour
Her umbrella keeps her dryShe has plans for the daySo sorry, she can’t stay
No time to wait for clear sky!
Five does it all!no challenge can make him fall
he's always got your backno matter when you call!
Six is full of wonderExploring every cranny and nookFrom up to the highest treetops
To every last page in a book.
Professor Seven is schemingHis laboratory bubbles and brews
A scientific mind is stirringUp homemade potions and stews.
Eight is on an adventure!Flying on his skis
Over snow or frozen pondHe’s always sure to please!
What could Nine be up to?She knows secrets she could sell
But when she’s working undercoverYou know she’ll never tell.
Zero is quite ZenHe meditates in space
He never ends nor beginsJust contemplates his place.
Now that you’ve made friends with the numbersThey may not seem so
different from youAlways busy, but able to lend a hand
With anything you need to do
It’s good to help each otherand fun to have some friends
And when you play togetheryou make a perfect Ten!
Lets draw some numbers! It’s easy and fun!
One stands up straight, then puts on his
shoes and hat!
Five walks down the street and runs around the corner-
but has to go back for his hat!
Nine holds her chin up high and stands
straight!
Two runs around the corner then
straight down the street to school!
Six spins and loops!
Three plays leapfrog, once, then twice!
Seven runs backwards
and falls down!
Zero is a circle, make him
round or oval!
Four does a curtsy- one leg up,
one leg down!
Eight likes to spin in circles
that don’t stop!
Try here, or on another piece of paper!

About this storyWhen I was little and learning how to count
it was hard for me to remember the numbersand learning math was very scary
(sometimes it still is!)
So I would play make-believe, and make thenumbers my friends. They had favorite things
to do and places to be, just like me!
Did you ever make friends withthe numbers too?
