ForwardAs a senior, we were asked to put together a print portfolio
of different works we have done over the past four years. In this book, I have included several conceptual as well as practical designs I have done in my classes with Professor Yueqi Zhang. There is definitely a mixture of other materials that I have done, both outside of class as volunteer work and inside of class as assignments.
Please enjoy this book for your viewing pleasures as I have worked hard on all my projects to do what I can do to best represent those who are in need of something for me to design.
As a parting note: We spend so much trying to be what others want us to be, but it’s better to be who we are and let others accept us for that.

I feel the need to speak about the logo I created for myself as my first work for two reasons. One, is because it appears on the cover and two, it describes me more than I know how.
The typeface I have chosen for
this logo is Brush Script Std Medium. This typeface is fluid, shows move-ment, and has a sort of bold elegance to it. I feel that it represent me be-cause I find myself able to flow into new project, materials, programs, and ideas easily.
This is not to say I am not firm in my own decisions, as I am bold. It
simply to say I am not unmoving.
I have chosen to use the first initial of my first and last name to represent me, with the “M” flowing into the “N” effortlessly, encircling itself in a neat fashion, as it begins the process of a new cycle.

This project had very little limits when it was given. All we were told was to create a typeface. I decided to create a tpyeface that had somewhat of a elvish feel to it.
In beginning this project, I had decided to use a serif style of
font, but I did not want a Roman style font, with both thin and thick strokes. I wanted it to be bold and more of a display font than a body.
I used a sanserif font as a base, because they don’t have thick and thin stroke transitions. I then de-cided that I wanted it to look organic, much like art nouveaux.
As a result, I ended up with a dis-play font with serifs, that seems to tie its roots into the organic curves and feel of garden vines.

In order to create an package or cover art for something, it is impor-tant to understand the story behind it, that is no different for films.
In this fictional film, the story goes that there is a special wish-ing well that supposedly works. The
main protagonist doesn’t believe this to be true and makes a wish to grow up with her favorite band and real-izes something’s gone array.
The story revolves around the girl of the well and the girl who made a wish, seemingly separate.
In order to convey this, I used my own pictures to create a layout of the
DvD cover, using an indistinguish-able coin to split the front cover of the two girls.
I tried to make it look as much like a DvD cover as possible while at the same time, creating something that would best represent the story.

The customer had requested a website that should would be able to put her collection of photos for potential clients of hers.
I thus created a template web-site for her with the home page as a introduction and a mild decorative
background. The home page would have a sample gallery of a few collect photos with the navigation directly underneath it.
Another page had the gallery where all pictures would be set in a neat 5 by 3 gallery, fitting nicely on a screen. If the thumbnails were to be clicked, it would show an en-
larged version of the picture.
The color scheme was a green and peach color, calming with a light contrast, making it easier on the eyes that a reverse back-ground would make.

In this project, we were to rede-sign an existing product. I wanted to keep the integrity of the original logo so that the package would easily be defined for what it was.
In order to do this, I kept the name in it’s same format, white
on a black background, with a white line to box it in. The rest, I wanted to keep a traditional since of the product.
I used a classical looking type-face, elegant serif, to give it a formal look. I used a yin yang symbol to incorporate a cup of steaming tea with the ingredients used in this
particular kind of tea.
With a decorative lotus petals falling on the side and the interest-ing way the steam wraps around give it an look that would be catching should someone see it on the shelves.

This was a semester long project in which we chose a specific compa-ny created a branding identity for it.
This included redesigning the logo, creating uses, and misuses for such, and created applica-tions, promotions, and advertise-
ments for said company.
I chose a small shop the created handmade soap. The logo I ultimately came up with was one that had a bar with bubbles on the side, with the company name centered inside it.
The font I used for this logo was an elegant, readable script, with a decorative art stroke around it, giv-
ing it a more rustic feel to it. The same b rush stroke was around the bubbles and the soap bar itself, mak-ing it look uniformed.
I used this same home-handmade feel to other products that would potentially be used and/or sold in the shop had the same feel to it.

Infographics tell a story with more decorations than words. They make seemingly confusing knowl-edge and map it out. With this project we were to choose a topic and create a timeline.
I created a timeline based on a
few real events that slowly turned into a fictional time stream. I used various games, movies, and series to compile an interesting timeline that outlined when events supposedly takes place.
I used one long thread to create the base of the timeline, for time is just threaded together chronologi-
cally for us to understand.
Another reason for thread would be due to the fact that I had real life events mixed with fictional ones. I woven in fictional things into our reality, so that they are understand-able on a real life system.

I found inspiration from Dr. Seuss on this project and decided to create a calendar that somewhat represented and reflected his work as well as creating a tribute to him.
The ribbon like organization, I found, gave it way to easily follow
the date and decipher the days of the week. I also created a transi-tion between the months because I wanted them to look like they belonged together, yet different in their own unique way.
I also used the color of birth-stones to decide each color of the month to have a semblance of unity
within each month itself, yet differ-ent for its counter parts.
The background as pure white was too empty. To solve this, I placed a distorted pattern behind the ribbons and basic text and ghosted it so that it didn’t overpow-er the main focus.

This assignment we were to pick a culture and create a series of post-cards and stamps. I chose the Chip-pewa culture. All the photos I used in this project were ones I owned.
The first thing I wanted to give these pieces were a leather texture,
for when I think of any North Amer-ican tribes, I think of the leather dresses and shoes.
I used a few pictures from the powwow my mother had gone to and knocked out the background for a few of them. I also included a dream catcher, something that’s seen as tra-ditionally Native American.
Animals typically have signifi-cance within the Native American culture, so I decided to place the bear paw, a clan of the Chippewa tribe
On one postcard, I wanted the foot print in the mud to make it look as if a bear had passed by recently, hoping to give it an kind of authen-tic feel to it.

In this assignment, we were to pick a band and create a faux gig poster for them. We chose the venue, the genre, and the date. It simply had to match the band’s style.
I chose My Chemical Romance. This proved to be difficult because the
band had several different concepts the have gone through with each CD they’ve released. I chose to combine these different concepts into one.
The silhouette of the guy holding a gun out against the large combines both their fourth CD and their second, as well as the blood splatters against the background. The grid-like back-
ground represents their CD they’ve not yet released, as the art at the bottom of the poster shows off their first album and their name reads in the font they used for their third CD.
I decided that I wanted to place them at the Congress Theatre in Chicago, so I crated a silhouette of the dome at the top.

This assignment was to show we knew and understood letterforms by having us use them to create a portrait and a quote that matched the character we used.
I choose the joker and created him with the colors purple and gray.
Purple, representing creativity, which I believe the Joker to be, granted his creatively was used for cruelty, he was still creative.
Grey, being a neutral color, I wanted it to look as though it was melting in the background, as the Joker tends to set thing up to see the world fall apart.

With this project, we were to find a sculpture in Chicago and create a poster out of it.
I had gone to 31st Beach to find a this topiary globe that marks the turn off into the Museum Campus Drive. It had an old worn look, with the fo-
liage grown over the top and hanging off on all sides.
I knocked out the background of the globe and placed it on a green background to give it a calm, earthy feel, contrasting it’s actual structure, which happens to be metal.
I placed the creator of the globe at the top, following the curve of the
globe, instead of straight text across to emphasis it. In the left right corner is a short blurb of what the structure is.

These two projects were sepa-rate flyers that I’ve done for the sorority, Zeta Sigma Chi voluntarily. The first one was for a Jeopardy game the Z Chis wanted to host for Black History Month.
With the short notice, I put to-gether a simple flyer that displayed
a simple background that looked as though it were a jeopardy board with a silhouette form of George Wash-ington Carver in the right corner.
The second flyer that is shown here is one for “Women’s Week.” I was asked to include all the informa-tion for their week long events.
I surrounded a girl who looked to be in a relaxed, comfortable position,
with both the title of the event and the plans of the week. I wanted the time, place, and a brief description of each day’s activity to be clear.
I did this by setting up silhou-ette that represent the activity under each day to both attract attention and lead the viewer’s eyes down in a line.

This design was created to look both simple and complex at the same time. It is created from simple shapes and has colors as though something is rising from within.
The wings spread across the shirt, wrapping around the shoulder
to the back, as it stretches across the top of the chest.
At first I had the design in the center of the shirt, but it looked to ordinary and plain. I found it to be more interesting and eye catch-ing off centered, crawling along the sleeve, as if it were about to fly right off the shirt.
It feels free and wild as it spreads its wings wide. M

This has the same principle as the popcorn design, taking an abnormal shape and repeating it. Because of the curves of the form, it gives it a water and organic feel.

This project didn’t have so much to do with the image in it, but the way the images and the text ap-peared. We were to choose a song or poem and set it to a specified gird.
We were allowed to use images from the internet due to the fact
it was for educational purposes. I used an image of myself, and a few I found from a free images site that best represented the song.
Most of the images include red, as I did with a pull out of one of the lines of the song, in the centered grid. The one blue image was to create con-trast against the red of the images.
I wanted to create interest within the grid, so I used both large and small images, and arranged the text so that it didn’t look as though it were one large paragraph or article.
Instead, I pulled one line out, so that it showed more importance, and aligned some text so that it fell and rose as it does with the song itself.
