NUNGER NEWS NUNGER NEWS RETURNS We are already four rounds into season 2005//06 - time flies! After several delays (mostly due to sheer laziness on behalf of your editor), the Nunger News is back, and with four rounds of results, this week’s edition is chokkers! The firsts moved up from A2 to A1 this season, but our batting woes from last season carried into these matches. This was corrected in emphatic fashion on the weekend, as the Nungers dug deep, and chased down a target of 235 set by a very respectable opposition in Burwood Districts. Bill Karametos led the way with 93, following his 63 in round three. Not Enough Runs The seconds, who have started the season well, this week came up against top side, Mulgrave Country Club. Our batting, already missing a number of players from last season’s team, was further hamstrung by Derby Day absentees, and failed miserably against a strong bowling line-up. Only a late charge by Andy Malthouse, making 28 saved complete embarrassment, but as it was a total of 115 was always going to be difficult to defend. The bowlers did a fine job, but in the end Mulgrave proved too strong. Fabulous A depleted third eleven took on winless Syndal this round. Syndal were competitive, but a lack of batting depth saw them collapse to the wiles of Peter Rosenthal for just 109. Our run chase was steady, wtih Phil Goodman providing the backbone needed in his return match. He was well supported by fellow veteran, Rosenthal. We had a second roll of the dice against their batting, with Mick Whitehead available on the second week, and although he and Bozo picked up seven wickets between them, it was not enough to force an outright. NUNGER NEWS RETURNSWe are already four rounds into season 2005//06 - time flies! After several delays (mostly due to sheer laziness on behalf of your editor), the Nunger News is back, and with four rounds of results, this week’s edition is chokkers!

Back on TrackIt’s been an inglorious start to the season for our club first eleven, with two losses and a draw in our first three matches.

Greg Webb showed a lot of class compiling 57, and skipper, David Beattie, who has been in fine form with the ball this season, completed the victory with 38no.

Not Enough RunsThe seconds, who have started the season well, this week came up against top side, Mulgrave Country Club.

The team is still well situated for the season, and is showing

the value of our dedication to the junior program, with Jarryd Barry making the leap to A3 this season in style, Tim Alexopoulos has also been taking wickets, and this week, they were joined by Dean Kandliotis who showed enough to prove that he is not out of his depth in this grade.

P2 NUNGER NEWS Volume 2 Issue 1

A1 Chalk up first victoryA terrific win on the weekend, after Burwood District set up a challenging total.

Bill Karametos and Greg Webb set up the win with a superb third wicket stand.

Trevor Patrao was amongst the wickets again, and David Beattie and Adrian Fidler combined to see us home.

After a run of low scores by our batsmen, this victory shows what we are really capable of, and sets up the rest of the season.

It’s also worth noting that after four rounds we have already played three of the teams in the top four, with our

two losses coming against the top two teams.

It’s early days yet, but that suggests we are not as badly placed as 8th out of ten might indicate.

In Round 5, we come up against Glen Waverley Hawks, who are winless at the bottom of the ladder.

It’s a game we must win to stay in contention, but we cannot take easily. Whilst the oppostion have lost all four matches, they have been against four teams above us on the ladder.

The match against Glen Waverley Hawks is at home at Greythorm Park. Players are reminded to provide afternoon tea!

BACK TO SCHOOLA3 downed by top teamA disappointing loss against a strong team for A3. Mulgrave were probably the second-best team last season, and have carried that form into this year.

However, we should be considering ourselves strong finals chances this year, and to be rolled for 115 is not good.

Our only win so far has been against Mitcham, who are at the bottom of the ladder with 0 points. And our first round tie came against Box Hill North, who haven’t picked up a point since.

So we have yet to prove ourselves this year, and that will make this week’s match all the more crucial.

It’s back to school for us in more ways than one, as we are facing Deakin away, at Bennetswood Reserve.

Deakin’s only loss was also against Mulgrave, and they have chalked up wins against Mitcham and Eley Park, so they are similarly placed to us.

It will be a good opportunity for us to show we are a genuine finals contender.

THE PREZ SAYSA somewhat fractured start to the season due to the weather and some unavailabilities. After 4 rounds all sides are on the board and if not in the 4 then no more than a game out. Three junior sides going with Milo Have a Go for the 7-9 year olds and the real possibility of an Under 10’s as well being formed in the next week. Many thanks to Bill Karametos, Mark Holley, Michael Crooks and Jarryd Barry for running this critical program. All senior players are involved by being allocated one team on a Saturday morning during the season to help out.

There is a good feel around the club at the moment with plenty of wins and a few former stars returning to rekindle their careers. Plenty going on pre Xmas with some key social functions for YOU to support. Make sure you get back for speeches and awards every second Saturday night and find out how the club performed and maybe cash in on the happy hour.

Lastly the flow of subs has been good thus far but November traditionally slows down. With team success, good numbers at training and some good individual performances, don’t let the financial side determine where, or if, you play. Don’t forget the social membership available for those non players.

- Peter Rosenthal.

NEW FACESWe extend a hearty Nunger welcome to new players at the club this season.

Mark Henderson has been opening the batting in our first XI, looking forward to seeing lots of runs Mark!

Balaji Gopal has been playing in the thirds and fourths, and taking a few wickets, good to see!

Jehangir Khan has also joined our fourths, taking wickets in one match and runs in another. His friend Rashid Khattak also played one match for us, we hope you both enjoy your time here!

Kevin O’Malley and Shaun Yates have also played a couple of games in the fourths, welcome!

And juniors Div Goyal and James Dowling have successfully made the leap to senior cricket. Well done!

We also welcome back some familiar faces. Theo Vlahos, Michael Villareal, Daniel Gretton, Phil Goodman, Niall Ridge, Phil Barren, Brad D’Elton, Col Matheson, Andy Malthouse and Ross Evans have all returned (if only to fill-in in some cases!) Welcome back all.

However, we’ve also lost some players, Tim Liston, Cam McWihnney, Jason Salsbury, Simon Rashleigh to name a few. And a pre-season training injury to Kauschick Sriraman has put him out for the year. Best wishes to all, and hope to see you back soon!

TWO OF THE BESTDynamic Duo do it for B2Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, Starsky and Hutch. Good things come in pairs. And for many years with the Nungers, it’s been Rosenthal and Goodman. And in our thirds match against Syndal, it was no exception. Bozo picking up 7 wickets for the match, and a very handy 20-odd at number 3, followed by Fabulous Phil scoring a very solid 46 to see us to victory.

The threes are well placed for the season. With a major re-jig of this grade from last season, most of the

teams that finished above us last year are no longer in the grade, and it looks very winnable. Having said that, Forest Hill and Waverley in particular, have been in very good early season form, and this week we face Waverley, so it will be a chance to show how good we really are.

Waverley won B2 last year, but not this team - this is their next team, up from C grade. It’s an away match, at Lum Reserve East. If we want to prove that we are a premiership chance this year, we need 9 more blokes to crash the Rosenthal/Goodman double act!

TO CAP IT OFFOr when is a hat not a hat?

The association has notified all clubs of penalties for incorrect attire.

This is a concern for the club as many fines have been handed out by the association thus far. Caps are the specific offender. The ONLY acceptable options are to wear a club cap or dark blue or white broad brimmed hat.

If the club gets fined ($25-) we will pass that on to the offending player(s).

There are traditional club caps and also cheaper baseball style caps available.

Please see a committee member if you would like to purchase a club cap, otherwise ensure your hat or cap conforms to the above standards.

AVAILABILITYAll players are reminded that it is imperative that you notify your captain, or Michael Vlahos (chairman of selectors) of your availability for upcoming matches.

The simplest way to do this is to ensure you fill in the Unavailability form on the notice board for any matches you will be missing.

Ideally, a short call or email to your captain each Monday would be most appreciated.

Please don’t leave this to the last minute, or assume that someone knows!

TRAININGAll players are reminded that with daylight savings coming in, there’s now plenty of time for a quality training session.

We are training both Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm (usually earlier).

With the nets we now have at Greythorn Park, all training sessions are there.

Ensure you get the most out of your cricket on a Saturday by preparing during the week with a good training session or two.

It’s the recipe for success!

And after training on Thursdays, please support your club with a quiet drink, and enjoy the good food supplied by Damian Mascali and his team. The committee have done a great job of catering over the past year or two, and the price can’t be beaten!

BATS ON FIRED1 top order in formA great performance by our top order in the last few weeks has put us in a strong position after round four.

In particular, Brad D’Elton has been in fine touch, with two 40’s and a 50 under his belt.

John Alexandridis also has two 40s to his name, and in round four picked up 4/9 as well.

Also good to see junior, Sean Barry making a controlled 50 in round 2.

We should not get too carried away however, as we can see that our three wins have come against teams now occupying the bottom three places.

If we are to remain in premiership conention, we need to show the same form against stronger opposition, and we get our chance this week against our nemesis from last season, Vermont South.

Vermont South have also been in fine early season form, so we can expect a tough match.

In week two we have the return match against St Davids, and we should be looking to repeat the dose we gave them in round four.

Both matches are at home at Trinity, please remember to supply afternoon tea!

SPOT THE NUNGERIt’s theorised that Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson prepared for his trips south by playing park cricket in Melbourne in October. New Nungers committee member, Ian Manley, would agree, although I don’t think you’ll find this mugshot gracing any $100 bills.

POSITIVE STARTAll three of our junior teams have started the season promisingly, with the under 14s and under 12s at (or near) the top of the ladder, and the under 16s pressing for a place.

The last round was disappointing for us, with all three teams going down, but not without a good fight!

The under 16s have yet to play a team below them on the ladder, they’ve had a difficult draw at the start of the season.

The coming round sees the under 16s at home (Greythorn Park) against Waverley.

The under 14s are playing Mulgrave Country Club, please check with Bill or Digit for ground details.

The under 12s are away against Vermont at Timber Ridge Reserve.

Note that there have been fixture changes to the under 14s announced this week!

JUNIOR PROGRAMAll senior players are reminded to check the roster on the notice board in the clubrooms.

Every senior player has been rostered for one morning only during the season, to attend a junior match and assist the co-ordinators with umpiring, scoring etc.

Most important! If you are unable to make your rostered morning, please ensure you swap with another player, and mark the change on the notice board.

Of course you are more than welcome to help out at more than your one rostered morning, if you would like to assist, please see Bill or one of the junior co-ordinators:

U/16: Bill Karametos

U/14: Mark Holley

U/12: Michael Crooks, Jarryd Barry

Milo progam: Jarryd Barry

The junior program is vital for the health of the club, and we do ask all players to ensure it is successful.

NUNGER NEWS

THE BACK PAGEFrom the world of golfA golfer set up his ball on the first tee, took a mighty swing and hit his ball into a clump of trees. He found his ball and saw an opening between two trees he thought he could hit through.

Taking out his 3-wood, he took another mighty swing; the ball hit a tree, bounced back, hit him in the forehead and killed him.

As he approached the gates of Heaven, St. Peter saw him coming and asked “Are you a good golfer’, to which the man replied: “Got here in two, didn’t I?”

The bride came down the aisle and when she reached the altar, the groom was standing there with his golf bag and clubs at his side.

She said:” What are your golf clubs doing here”?

He looked her right in the eye. and said, “This isn’t going to take all day, is it?”

An octogenarian who was an avid golfer moved to a new town and joined the local Country Club. He went to

the Club for the first time to play, but was told that there wasn’t anybody he could play with because they were already out on the course. He repeated several times that he really wanted to play today.

Finally, the assistant Pro said he would play with him and asked him how many strokes he wanted for a bet. The 80 year old said, “I really don’t need any strokes as I have been playing quite well. The only real problem I have, is getting out of sand traps.”

And he did play well. Coming to the par four 18th, they were all even. The Pro had a nice drive and was able to get on the green and two-putt for a par. The old man had a nice drive, but his approach shot landed in a sand trap next to the green. Playing from the bunker he hit a high ball, which landed on the green and rolled into the cup. Birdie, match and all the money!

The Pro walked over to the sand trap where his opponent was still standingin the trap. He said: “nice shot, but I thought you said you have a problem getting out of sand traps?”

Replied the octogenarian “I do, would you please give me a hand.”
